Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

BECCO is born with LED and many func-
tional components are integrated in the
luminaire design. The heat sink forms a
characteristic connection between the
column and the lantern and it is the base
of the LED module as well. The light source
is not visible, and the indirect, non-glaring
light is spread by means of the arched
roof plate.
The BECCO family comprises the lantern,
Ø720 mm, for poles with a diameter of
max 114 mm, and the bollard, Ø300 mm,
with a cylindrical pole of 114 mm diameter.
BECCO ist für LED konzipiert und die für
LED funktionellen Komponenten sind
wesentliche Bestandteile des Designs.
Das Kühlelement bildet eine charakter-
istische Verbindung zwischen Mast und
Leuchte und dient zusätzlich als Sockel
für den LED-Modul. Das Leuchtmittel ist
im Sockel integriert, und das indirekte,
blendfreie Licht wird durch die gewölbte
Deckplatte gestreut.

Simplicity by design is the principle behind
STICKS created by schmidt hammer lassen
architects. The lines of the grey-enam-
elled aluminium housing are continued
in single or double light slits in opalised
plastic. At daylight, STICKS is simply
part of the environment; at night, light
predominates and the surroundings step
into character.

SQUARE will underline the simplicity of
good architecture – even in detail, and it
is the perfect match for any minimalistic
style. Digits and symbols can be cut out in
the front, simplifying communication both
at day and night. Light diffuses softly
through slits at the top and the bottom.
The lamp being placed in the lower part
of the fitting, the downward light is the
stronger.

17. QUARTO, designed by Torsten Thorup
and Claus Bonderup back in the 80’es,
is still going strong due to its classic
circular shape. However, the QUARTO from
Focus Lighting differs from many similar
products because it ends up in a cylindrical
shape. This completes and adds harmony.
Throughout the years QUARTO has proven
its ability to adding quality to and adjusting
to its environment.

und Claus Bonderup wurde in den 80’er
Jahren gezeichnet und ist wegen der
klassischen Form ein Bestseller geworden.
Die QUARTO von Focus Lighting scheidet
sich von den ähnlichen Produkten deutlich
aus, da das zirkuläre Gehäuse zylindrisch
abgeschlossen wird. Diese Kombinierung
des Kreises und des Zylinders vollendet
die Form und fügt Harmonie dazu.
Med udgangspunkt i cirklens geometri har
QUARTO lampen været udsat for talrige
kopieringer. Men den var den første af sin
art, da Torsten Thorup & Claus Bonderup
tegnede den for Focus i 1980. Men
ikke nok med at den var den første; den
er også helt sin egen: QUARTO kombinerer
cirklens og cylinderens form, idet det
cirkulære lampehus afsluttes cylindrisk.
På den måde får lampen ”næse” der
forhindrer blænding, og formen bliver
harmonisk og fuldendt.

galvanised luminaires will withstand
almost any treatment and requires no
maintenance. Minor damages to the
iron-zinc coating will heal up by them-
selves and no corrosion will occur. All

Clean lines and simple materials have
made the PUNKT LAMP a superior brand
within downlighters. Nothing disturbs the
simple design dominated by the opal-white
glass cylinder which embraces the lamp
and prevents glaring.
The PUNKT LAMP is officially tested and
approved for various ceiling types, and
when equipped with a tight housing, it will
be suitable for exterior use and in bath
rooms.

AVA AVA - the hall pendant is the alternative to
the symmetrical pendant. Its three sides
are alike but form a varying sculpture. By
means of the three slits the luminaire is
capable of illuminating itself.
Height: 1 meter.

Skulptur. Die drei Schlitze haben den

non-glaring way. Equipped with LED, the
250 mm PELÉE will be available by spring
