First aid for Foreign bodies in- Skin,
Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat

First aid for Foreign bodies in Skin
• To recognize Foreign Bodies under Skin, you will note the person
will have itching, redness, swelling at the area.
First aid Management for Foreign bodies in Skin
• Wash hands.
• Make the victim to sit down comfortably on the chair.
• Notice the condition of the person.
Cont..
• Grasp a splinter or glass or pin which is
projecting out with tweezers and remove it
• If a large object, like a gun shot or big object
is embedded, don’t try to remove it, but
rather stabilize with ring pad and bandage
around.
• Refer to hospital or transport immediately.
First aid for Foreign bodies in Eye
• To recognize Foreign Bodies in Eyes , will
note that the person complains of feeling of
pressure or discomfort or irritation or
sensation in the eye.
• The person will also have pain in eye, lot of
tears coming out from eyes, redness in eye.
• There may be swelling and may see foreign
body in eye also.
First aid Management for Foreign bodies in Eye
• Wash hands.
• Make the victim to sit down comfortably on the chair.
• Wear Gloves if available.
Cont..
• Separate the eyelids with your finger and thumb to check
for the foreign body in the eye.
• if you can see the foreign body and it is floating, the foreign
body is in the lower eye lid then proceed by:
-Ask the victim to pull the eye down.
-Tell the victim to washout the foreign body by
keeping the eye under running water while holding
the eyelid open.
-In case washing does not help, use a moist piece of
clean cloth or narrow moist swab or even the corner
of a handkerchief twisted to a fine point to remove
the foreign body
Cont..
• If you are unable to find the foreign body embedded or it is
not visible, it is most probably in the upper eye lid. In this
case, proceed as follow
• Open the eye by pulling the eye lids.
• Wash eyes briskly by sprinkling the water into the eyes.
• If still the foreign body is not dislodged, place a cotton-tipped
swab on the outside of the upper lid and fold the lid over the
cotton swab. Ask victim to look downward.
• Check where the foreign body is on the upper eye lid.
Cont..
• If not manageable, Refer to hospital as required.
First aid for Foreign bodies in Ear
• To recognize Foreign Bodies in Ears, you
will note that the person complains of
feeling a very loud buzzing/ringing noise in
the ear, uneasiness and irritation in ear. The
victim also has pain and discomfort with
disturbance in hearing. Itching and
swelling is present.
• There is wriggling sensation in ear if
foreign body is insect .
First aid Management for Foreign bodies in Ear

Wash hands.

Make the victim to sit
down comfortably on
the chair.

Wear Gloves if
available.

Ask the person to tilt
the head to the
affected side and
down to try to
dislodge the object by
action of gravity
Cont..
• If there is insect in the ear:
• Keep the head tilted and affected ear on the
upper side.
• Keep a towel or a plastic sheet underneath the
ear to cover the body.
• Warm mineral oil, baby oil or paraffine oil.
• Now pour 3-5 drops of oil into the ear.
• Watch carefully for the insect which will die due
to oil and then remove it.
Cont..
• If not manageable, Refer to hospital immediately.
First aid for Foreign bodies in Nose
• To recognize Foreign Bodies in Nose, you
will note nasal Discharge which is clear,
gray, or bloody and has bad smell.
• He/she may have difficulty to breath,
whistling noises when breathing through
their nose along with feeling of restlessness.

First aid Management for Foreign bodies in Nose
• Wash hands.
• Make the victim to sit down comfortably on the chair.
• Observe the nose and discover the object’s position.
Cont..
• Tell him to breathe out forcefully.
• If unsuccessful, transport to hospital immediately.
First aid for Foreign bodies in Throat
• To recognize Foreign Bodies in Throat, you
will note the person will have restlessness,
difficulty to swallow and object may be
visible in the mouth.
First aid Management for Foreign bodies in
Throat
• Wash hands.
• Make the victim to sit down comfortably on
the chair.
• Notice the condition of the person. If it is an
adult see if he or she is coughing or
choking.
Cont..
In case of Choking proceed as follows:
1) For a sitting or standing victim:
• Stand behind the victim.
• Support the victim with one hand and give 5
back blows with the other hand.
Cont..
-After this, wrap your arms around the waist of the victim.
-Make a fist of your non-dominant hand and hold it in the dominant
Hand.
-Use the thumb of your non-dominant fisted hand against the
abdomen slightly above the navel and below the rib cage.
-Press at this point with this fisted hand in quick upward thrusts
for 5 times.
-Alternate these two moves-i.e. 5 back blows and 5 abdominal
thrusts.
-Repeat many times until the foreign body is removed

If you are alone, perform back blows and abdominal thrusts
alternately. If a helper is available, ask him/her to call for help.
Cont..
For a lying victim.
• Kneel by the side of the victim. You can also
kneel on the top of victim’s legs.
• Keep heel of one hand on the point over
abdomen between navel and ribs (as in image).
Keep the other hand over it.
• Press the victim’s abdomen making a strong,
upward push.
Cont…
• Repeat several times.
• If you feel that the victim can vomit, turn him to side to avoid blocking of the
airway.
Cont…
For infants
• Put him/her with face down along your forearm, with his head low and support
him in this position.
• Give 5 back blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.
Cont…
- If this does not work, turn the infant up, keep him on his back
now on your forearm, just opposite of the position in which you
were holding him/her earlier so that face and body is towards
you.
- Using two fingers, push inwards against the middle of infant’s
breastbone, at a point one finger below the nipple line. Perform
five chest thrusts

-Check the mouth and remove the object if seen with finger sweep.
--Refer to hospital or transport immediately if the foreign body is
not
dislodged.
