Adrenal Gland Essay
Adrenal gland
In mammals, the adrenal glands (also known as suprarenal glands) are the triangular shaped
endocrine glands that sit on top of the kidneys. They are chiefly responsible for releasing hormones
in conjunction with stress through the synthesis of corticosteroids and catecholamines, including
cortisol and adrenaline (epinephrine), respectively.
Anatomy and function
Anatomically, the adrenal glands are located in the retroperitoneum situated atop the kidneys, one
on each side. They are surrounded by an adipose capsule and renal fascia. In humans, the adrenal
glands are found at the level of the 12th thoracic vertebra. Each adrenal gland is separated into two
distinct structures, the adrenal cortex and medulla, both of which ... Show more content on

The suprarenal veins may form anastomoses with the inferior phrenic veins.
The adrenal glands and the thyroid gland are the organs that have the greatest blood supply per
gram of tissue. Up to 60 arterioles may enter each adrenal gland.[4]
Terminology
The adrenal glands are named for their location relative to the kidneys. The term adrenal comes
from ad (Latin, near ) and renes (Latin, kidney ). Similarly, suprarenal is derived from supra
(Latin, above ) and renes. Colloquially, they are referred to as kidney hats .
Adrenal cortex
Situated along the perimeter of the adrenal gland, the adrenal cortex mediates the stress response
through the production of mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids, including aldosterone and
cortisol respectively. It is also a secondary site of androgen synthesis. Contents * 1 Layers * 2

The Life You Save May Be Your Own Short Story Analysis
What brings you true joy? Is it family and friends, a religion, or some material item? In the short
story, The Life You Save May Be Your Own, Flannery O Connor gives examples of what can
bring Tom Shiftlet joy and what he chooses instead. A tramp, Shiftlet, wanders to the Crater
house in search of a job. Mrs. Crater knows her farm needs a good fixing, so she allows Shiftlet
to sleep in the car and will feed him if he fixes things at the house. Mrs. Crater tries to pawn her
daughter, Lucynell, off on Shiftlet. Mrs Crater offers the car Mr. Shiftlet fixed, a place to live, and
$17.50 just to marry Lucynell. Shiftlet finally agrees and accepts the bribe. On their honeymoon,
Shiftlet leaves Lucynell at a diner and moves forward with his new car. A major theme that O
Connor repeated throughout her short storywas how many things can block your vision of what
truly matters in life. O Connor reflects in all of her writings that God, and his gifts, are the things
that can bring everlasting joy. She knows that there are always roadblocks in the way, though.
Throughout the short story, The Life You Save May Be Your Own, Flannery O Connor uses
literary elements of symbolism, characterization, and naturalism to develop her theme of finding
what truly matters in life. Symbols within a story can help to represent greater meaning out of
one piece of work. Flannery develops symbolism through the car and through Shiftlet. Shiftlet is
compared to Christ the savior many times, but then later reveals himself to be more of an anti
Christ. O Connor describes Shiftlet as a wanderer who, swung both his whole and his short arm
slowly so that they indicated an expanse of sky and his figure formed a crooked cross (O Connor
675). This is the first time that Flannery compares Shiftlet to JesusChrist by forming a cross. The
cross is very symbolic towards Jesus because that is how God shows his love to all mankind.
Shiftlet only has one arm, though, which shows that if he were to be compared to Jesus, he
would be a flawed Christ. Not only does the crooked cross symbolize a flawed Christ, but also
foreshadows that Shiftlet may tend to show a flaw or even deny God s compassion. The car that
Shiftlet voluntarily fixes is also a

The Invention Of Inkjet Printing
The concept of inkjet printing originated in the 20th century, and the technology was first
extensively developed in the early 1950s. Starting in the late 1970s inkjet printers that could
reproduce digital images generated by computers were developed, mainly by Epson, Hewlett
Packard (HP), and Canon. Although inkjet printers only appeared on the consumer market in the
late 1980s, they had been under development for more than twenty years by that time. In the mid
1970s, printer companies realized the potential of the technology that would make dot matrix
printers obsolete. The challenge, however, was to come up with a way to create an affordable
inkjet printerthat would reliably create high quality print outs .In the worldwide consumer market,
four manufacturers account for the majority of inkjet printer sales: Canon, HP, Epson, and
Lexmark, a 1991 spin off from IBM.[1]( IBM Archives: 1990s . 03.ibm.com. Retrieved 2012 09

The continuous ink jet method is used commercially for marking and coding of products and
packages. The first patent on the idea is from 1867, by William Thomson. The first commercial
model was introduced in 1951 by Siemens. In continuous ink jet technology, a high pressure pump
directs liquid ink from a reservoir through a microscopic nozzle, creating a continuous stream of
ink droplets. A piezoelectric crystal causes the stream of liquid to break into droplets at regular
intervals. The ink droplets are subjected to an

The Black Action Movement And The Black Power Movement
Emergence: Huey Newton and Bobby Seale met in 1961 while fellow students at Oakland
California s, Merritt College. Newton and Seale met while attending a Merritt College rally to
protest the U.S. Blockade of Cuba. Additionally, they were both activist members of the Donald
Wards, Merritt College based African American Student Association In October of 1966, Bobby
Seale and Huey Newton pooled their money from work and founded the Black Panthers Party in
an Oakland California Storefront. As men of action and prompted by their disillusionment with
the Capitalist Philosophy of Merritt colleges African American Student Association founder
Donald Ward, Newton and Seale subsequently joined the SSAC under Ernie Allen which was a
front for the (RAM) the Revolutionary Action Movement where they learned to be
revolutionaries. The 1966 San Francisco Police shooting and murder of an unarmed black teen,
the 1966 assassination of Nation of Islam Spokesperson Malcolm X, the emerging Black Power
Movement, and the repressive actions of the Police during the 1966 Watts Rebellion were pivotal
in the emerge of the BPP as they too embraced the Black Power Movement. The Watts Rebellion
embraced the black power movement and was precipitated due to Black Peoples rage over ghetto
conditions, a chafing against police brutality and the blatant murder of Black men by the Police, as
well as the capitalist exploitation and oppression. Urban Communities in the Northern had also

Plath s Effective Use of Characterization in The Initiation
Millicent faces conflict the entire story, whether it was internal or external. Conflict was necessary,
because it helps develop the characterization of Millicent and other characters in the story.
Characterization is necessary, because it portrays Millicent s feelings toward the initiation and the
character plot of other characters. Millicent is faced with a decision in the short story, whether to be
initiated or not. The use of character plot and theme play a role in the final decision that Millicent
makes. The author uses characterization and conflict effectively in the short story to create
character plot and theme. Characterization is effectively used to create character plot and portray
the theme of the story. This is effectively used by the author through Millicent s thoughts and
through the use of other characters. For instance, Millicent continually tells herself that what girl
wouldn t want to be elected like she was (Plath 240). She repeatedly tells herself ideas such as this,
because she is trying to convince herself that she is making the right choice. Another instance is
shown when Tracy tells Millicent that Millicent will change, whether she thinks she will or not
(240). Through the words Tracy states, Millicent realizes that she is lying to herself. Consequently,
through the earlier examples, the characterization of Millicent and other characters creates the
character plot in the story. The character plot in the story shows how Millicent has to make a

Karl Marx
A century and a half ago, Karl Marx established a theory that today is known as the backbone to
modern socialism and communism. Marx viewed the early capitalism of his own day as
inherently exploitive. At the core of capitalist production is what is considered surplus value, the
value left over after the producer (in Marx s case, factory owner) had paid the fixed costs of
production such as raw materials, machinery, overhead and wages. The left over amount was kept
as profit, a profit that Marx saw that was earned from the sweat of the labor. Derived from his
idea of surplus value was that of alienation. Marx gave an economic interpretation to alienation.
People were alienated from their own labor; their work was appropriated by someone... Show more

In realizing that the capitalist had a new tool with which they could barter or trade, they also
realized they now had an effective tool to keep the cost of the labor commodity down and in
effect control those of the labor community that would become trouble for the new way of doing
things in this new capitalist, industrial, power creating realm. The first casualty was and is
always the worker in a capitalist society, according to Marx. See, first of all, Marx saw the many
workers as victims who were or are taking advantage of by the owners of the factories and other
means of production to satisfy the gain of profit by the few capitalists. Marx argued that under
capitalism labor seldom receives more than bare subsistence. According to Marx, the surplus
remaining is appropriated by the capitalists as their profits. This was a belief that many laborers,
trying to organize to obtain better wages and work conditions during early commercial capitalism,
held and acted upon.
Arguing that the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles, (500) and
that liberal governments and ideology were merely agents of the exploiting owners of property,
Marx advocated the abolition of private property and predicted the demise of capitalism after a
series of recurring crises. The abolition of property, and therefore of class

10 Things I Hate About You Comparison
The two movies that are similar and have the same type of genre, dealing with relationships are 10
Things I Hate About You and The Taming of the Shrew . These movies are the same, yet so
different from one another. Both plots are about love and relationships, that s why 10 Things I Hate
About You is based on the same concept as The Taming of the Shrew
. One of the main differences
is the time period, throughout the year s lot of views on things start to change. The idea of
marriage and relationships are very different from back then to today. For example, in The Taming
of the Shrew , Petruchio was only marrying Katherine because her father had given him money.
This clearly shows that he wanted nothing to do with her, but since there was money involved he
went along with it. In 10 things... Patrick was also paid but throughout the process he really had
fallen for her, and she fell for him too. One scene in the movie that shows this is when Kat sneaks
him out of detention and then they ended up going paintballing together. Throughout the scene you

For example, both Kat (10 things...) and Katherine (The Taming of the Shrew) are abusive. Both of
them are viewed as the shrews . The only difference is that Kat is verbally abusive and she s not
afraid to say what she feels; she is also very opinionated. On the other hand, Katherine isn t really
noticed so she feels like the only way to make people notice her is to be physically abusive.
Another good example would be their fathers. In Taming of the Shrew , Baptista knew that so
many men wanted Katherine s sister. So, he wanted Katherine to wed but he was basically just
trying to get rid of her like she s an object. On the other hand, in 10 things... Kats father, Walter,
has a much very different mindset. He doesn t necessarily want Kat to have a boyfriend, she just
has to have a boyfriend before her sister Bianca

John Napier was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on February 1, 1550. His parents were Sir
Archibald Napier and Janet Bothwell. Napier came from a wealthy family. His father was a

Napier was sent to St Salvator s College at the age of 13, because of his intellectual mind. He
gained curiosity in the subject theology. Theology remained very important to him, although he left
college before he could even receive his degree. After leaving college, many believe that he traveled

The Awakening Summary
Yaeger s Critique of Chopin s The Awakening
In A Language Which Nobody Understood : Emancipatory Strategies in The Awakening, Patricia
Yaeger questions the feminist assumption that Edna Pontellier s adulterous behavior represent a
radical challenge to patriarchal values. Using a deconstructionist method, Yaeger argues that in the
novel adultery functions not as a disrupting agent of, but, rather, as a counterweight to the
institution of marriage, reinforcing the very idea it purports to subvert by framing female desire
within an elaborate code [of moral conduct] that has already been negotiated by her society. A
reading of The Awakeningthat can envision only two possible outcomes for its heroine
acquiescence to her role as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yaeger takes issue with Tanner s contention that extramarital desire functions in the 18th and 19th
century novel as an attack on the rules governing the opposed demands of private desire and
public law, rules that are mediated by the institution of marriage. (Tanner 13) While Yaeger agrees
with Tanner that adulterous behavior by literary heroines does challenge one expression of
patriarchy, Yaeger characterizes this challenge as only mildly transgressive, noting that adultery
remains well within the arena of permissible social trespass. According to Yaeger, Edna s falling in
love with Robert Lebrun is an act of social misconduct that is easily imagined by, and indeed is
anticipated by, the bourgeois Creole society she inhabits. Thus, Tanner errs when he equates
adultery in the novel with the possible breakdown of all the mediations on which society itself
depends ; rather, Yaeger notes, for Edna the thought or practice of adultery...is actually a
conservative gesture within the larger scheme of things, another mode of social acquiescence.
Indeed,

Airplane Of Hope Speech
Airplane of Hope
Dear Mr.Hawkins , my former, history teacher, I know you are set in your idea that the destruction
of the Berlin Wall was the turning point of WWll, I strongly disagree. Even though there were
significant, life changing, humanitarian efforts made by the U.S, the Berlin Airlift was one of the
greatest of these efforts. This was one of the strongest humanitarian efforts made because America
supplied food for the starving people of West Berlin, granted them the gift of hope when there was
nothing left to hope for, and assisted every step of the way until the terrible separation between
East Berlin and West Berlin. When the Soviets took their share of Germany with France, Britain,
and the U.S., the Soviets made the choice to separate Germany into eastern and western divisions.
This was done so that they could extend communism into a war torn Europe. After World War
Two, there wouldn t have been any better timing. The war gave them an open door to start
communism all over again because no one would ve been able to stop whatever came in their path.
The events leading to the Airlift began with Russia s iron fist and persistence to conquer
everything. The Russians prayed that the poverty and a war torn Western Europe would give them
the chance to spread communism into the western half of Europe (Griffin). In the beginning, a plan
which was filled with solely hope in the beginning, slowly unraveled in front of the world s eyes as
a nightmare. The Russian

Expostulation And Reply By William Wordsworth
The revolutionary decade of the 1790s produced literature that was not only distinguished by new
and often radical ideas, but also by experimentation and innovation with regard to genre and form.
Discuss with reference to Lyrical Ballads and/or Maria and/or Northanger Abbey.
In this essay, I will discuss how the literature produced by the revolutionary decade of the 1970 s
was distinguished by new and radical ideas, and experimentation with regard to genre and form, in
relation to William Wordsworths Lyrical Ballads. The poem which I will be drawing from in this
essay is Expostulation and Reply , and the Preface to Lyrical Ballads.

The poem is set in the Lake District of Wordsworth s youth, and embodies the ideals of the
Romantic Era; that nature and human intuition have a kind of knowledge not found in books and
formal education. When confronted as to why he spends his time at the lake, musing and
contemplating, Wordsworth replies with what was to become a memorable moment in english
literature; nature nurtures the mind in a unique way, with it s own wisdom, one which cannot be
found in the pages of scholarly books. To stimulate his senses entirely, a man must just sit in the
presence of nature. This was an idea found in the works of many romantic poets, who were thought
to have a distrust in mankind, but found peace and knowledge in closeness with nature. Romantic
poetry allowed us to see their world directly and much of romantic poetry invited the reader to
identify the protagonists with the poets themselves. (Abrams)
The metre of this poem is in iambic tetrameter, which places emphasis on the power of nature. For
example, in the first line, the words old and stone are emphasised by the metre, pointing towards
the poets belief in the power and importance of nature. Again, in the third stanza, the metre points
towards moth and earth , furthering the pointed use of nature as a genre. it has been common in
critical writing since the romantic period to equate the loosening of specifically metrical restrictions

Nanking Massacre And The Nanking Massacre
In 1937, the Chinese city of Nanking was devastated when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded,
killing around 300,000 people . The Japanese soldiers went into people s homes searching for
Chinese soldiers, and killing civilians. These devastating events are known as the Rape of
Nanking , or as the Nanking Massacre. However, the history of atrocities like this are not always
taught. Things such as the Japanese history textbook controversy show how one event can be
remembered, or portrayed, in many different ways. For the most part, history can be skewed for
political reasons. For Japan, making history their own had benefits, and these benefits could help
the government keep their people on their side of things, and it would try to legitimize their own
views on their history.
The forming of loyalty and patriotism through selective teachings of the Nanking Massacre has built
tensions between China and Japan that have, and still do, separate two nations.
The history, which is taught correctly in most nations, is horrifying. The Nanking Massacre
lasted for a span of a few months, with Japanese soldiers sparing no man, woman or child. The
title Rape of Nanking is to describe the raping of women, numbering anywhere from 20,000 to
80,000 . Some of the Chinese captives, some of which were Chinese soldiers, were forced to dig
graves for groups of other captives to be buried alive in, and then would be buried themselves
when the next group of captives dug a new grave .

Essay on tuskegee syphilis study
The Tuskegee Syphilis Study was an unethical prospective study based on the differences between
white and black males that began in the 1930 s. This study involved the mistreatment of black
males and their families in an experimental study of the effects of untreated syphilis. With very
little knowledge of the study or the disease by participants, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study can be
seen as one of the worst forms of injustices in the United States history. Even though one could
argue that the study was originally intended to be for good use, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study was

In Macon County, Alabama, about 40% of African Americans had syphilis. Syphilis caused by a

organ systems of the individual. The victim may become paralyzed, blind and/or deaf; develop
heart problems or a mental illness, or other symptoms (Gray 37 38). They decided that they wanted
to compare and contrast how blacks and whites develop the disease and the effects on each race.
Years before the study of the Negro was set to begin, a similar study for whites was conducted in
Oslo, Norway. This study was a retrospective look into the effects of untreated syphilis in whites.
The retrospective study used case histories of those who had syphilis when they died not living
patients. The U.S. Public Health Service decided to use African Americans in Macon County in the

experimentations took place at the Tuskegee Institute which is why the study is generally named

Augustus Of The Roman Empire
Julius Cesar, the Dictator of the Roman Empire adopted his grandnephew, also known as Octavian
in his will. After Cesar was assassinated Augustus wanted nothing more than to claim his
inheritance and to avenge his slain father (Cole Symes). This vengeance left constant warfare that
came to an end after the victory at Actium. At this point in time Rome was no longer a republic.
Augustusruled for four years as an independent citizen then accepted his title as emperor. Augustus
was the first roman emperor and led Rome s transformation from republic to empire. Augustus

Augustus also reformed the religious systems in Rome that had been previously destroyed by
constant warfare. Augustus thought that such a reform of the old religion, and a renewed trust in
the traditional gods would help restore the confidence of the people(Wasson, 2016). Augustus also
revived the priesthoods in Rome and ended up being appointed as the Pontifex Maximus(Fife,
2012). This newly acquired position left Augustus as the ruler of the Roman Empire secularly and
religiously. Now that Augustus had two highly influential roles he had unprecedented power and
control over two separate spheres. This high amount of power could have been easily abused, but
it was not. Augustus revived the Ludi Secularse which was a religious celebration that occurred
once every one hundred and ten years. Augustus was involved in the revived secular games which
had been omitted because of the disturbances of the civil war(McDermott). Augustus also guided
the construction of an Imperial Cult. This Imperial Cult was made for worship of the Emperor as
a god. Some may say this is egotistical since he himself is the Emperor, but he was made the
Pontifex Maximus, and was a true savior to Rome. Augustus also aided in the construction of a

The Correlation Between The Number Of Positive Social Essay
Abstract
This proposal aims to explore the correlation between the number of positive social supports that
adolescents between 15 and 18 years old have and their success in achieving sobriety when
attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings. Participants will be recruited through an availability
sampling method and asked to participatent in this longitudinal research study. As a result, this
study will expand on the minimal literature concerning how to best help adolescents that are
seeking treatment from drug addiction. Great
Effectiveness of Narcotics Anonymous for Adolescents
Drug addiction can be a powerful and complex situation for some individuals to gain control of.
Research and health professionals have historically shown that 12 step programs provide the tools
and healthy social networks that are immensely beneficial to achieving sobriety. However, prior
studies have largely focused on these programs effectiveness for adults, whereas younger
populations are also seeking treatment for drug addiction. This longitudinal study will have only
adolescent participants to enhance the minimal research that has been done on this population. It is
relevant to social work because the results of this study will help social workers to better
understand that Narcotics Anonymous may be more effective for some adolescents, namely those
with many positive social supports as compared to those with few positive social supports.

The article primarily appeals to individuals with interest in global warming. The main point that
Wood focuses on is the idea of sulfur aerosol injection, in which sulfur dioxide would be pumped
into the sky. However, there are several issues with this concept that he addresses in his article.
The first issue that is addressed is the possibility of acid rain and severe climate shifts.
Geophysicists argue that while the idea would work, catastrophic failures would incur if the
sulfur dioxide were ever to stop pumping into the atmosphere. Wood lists several downfalls of this
system, almost in an intimidating manner. He makes the downfalls seem horrendous to the
benefits. However, Wood also completely disregards the other alternative ideas for solving global
warming. From painted skies to carbon eating trees, the only concept discussed in depth is the
sulfur dioxide idea. This raises concerns as the idea he appears to support the most also happens to
be the idea that he discusses the atrocious downfalls of.
What is interesting about this paper is the author s purpose. It seems as though he is attempting to
raise awareness and support geophysics. However, all the points he brings up to discuss he quickly

The Scarlett and the Black Essay
Good vs. Evil Albert Einstein once said, God did not create evil. Just as darkness is the absence
of light, evil is the absence of God. During WWII, many horrific atrocities were committed by
the Axis Powers, specifically Nazi Germany. Germany, Japan, and Italy represent the evil side of
the war, while the Allied Powers consisting of Russia, France, and Britain represented the good
side attempting to overcome the evil. More precisely, the two main characters in The Scarlet and
the Black , Colonel Herbert Kappler and Monsignor O Flaherty represent the powers of evil and
good respectively. Throughout the film, the forces of good and evil turn from working against each
other, to coming more close together and good eventually overcoming... Show more content on

Contrary to the forces of evil represented in the film, the forces of good were led by Monsignor O
Flaherty, an Irish clergy man who ran an underground organization while Nazi Germanyoccupied
Rome. It was not a one man show however, because O Flaherty had the help of Ms. Francesca
Lombardo and other Romans in his operations. Throughout the course of the movie, Monsignor
had many successes in his operation, even with the attempts by Kappler to destroy the group
because O Flaherty had clever plans and several disguises. In the larger picture, the forces of
good were symbolized by the Allies. As the war progressed, these forces of good had success as
they pushed down into Italy and overcame German resistance. When the Allies finally entered
Rome in the summer of 1944, Monsignor joined the celebration of liberation and the conquering
of the forces of evil in Italy. The forces of good had their successes but also had their failures. For
example, when Kappler is recaptured escaped prisoners, he exploited and oppressed the population
and many of O Flaherty s friends were either arrested or killed. Also, Monsignor was also the target
of an assassination attempt which failed though. Even though Kappler tried many times to shut O
Flaherty s operation down, the rescue organization continued in saving many lives, which can be

The British s Involvement During The 1947-1948 War Of...
Chenika Bukes
Over 20,000 people were murdered during the 1947 1948 War of Independence. The British s
involvement in the conflict during the 1910 s 1940 s is responsible for those deaths through a
narrative of events in the upcoming years to the war. The British fuelled the Arab Israeli conflict by
antagonising the Palestinian Arabs, by sentencing the Jewish people to death and by beginning the
1947 1948 Mandatory Palestine war of independence. The Arab Israeli conflict roughly began with
minor disagreements and altercations since the late 19th century up until present day. Whenever the
British got involved in the conflict, something seemed to go wrong. The Arabs were antagonised by
the British when the McMahon agreement was not seen through. The White paper, commissioned
by the British, created a death sentence for the Jewish people Dr.Weizmann (1939, June), and when
the British withdrew from the conflict a series of events led to the 1947 1948 war of independence.
The McMahon Agreement was constituted on the 24th of October 1915 between the Meccans and
the British. Upon the rise of Arab nationalism, the Arabs (Meccans) pursued independence from the
Ottoman Empire. Amir Abdullah, son of Hussein Bin Ali the Sharif of Mecca, visited the British
general consul in Egypt in February of 1914. His incentive was to verify that the British will
recognise Arab independence if they support the British in war with purpose to abdicate the
Ottoman Turks. Then in 1917 the

Hill Attack Schurz Summary
In Schurz s report he talked a decent amount on the treatment of slaves. He was talking about how
the terror against any colored person was definitely still going on. Schurz talks about how black
people were being; kidnapped, maimed, killed, and have been disappearing (M.P. Johnson pg.4).
The treatment was not going to get better because the southern whites have an ingrained feeling
that the blacks at large belong to the withes at large... (M.P. Johnson pg.5). He s pretty much saying
that the black peopleare still being looked down upon by the whites in the south. This ties in with
how Hill and many of his family were being treated. For example, Hill talks about how one night,
people came knocking at the door of his brother. These people were no other than the K.K.K.
They were looking for him and bludgeoned his sister in law to get the information about Hill s
whereabouts. When the woman couldn t handle the beating, she told them where Hill was. They
grabbed Hill out of his wooden shed and started to beat him, until one of the members started
talking. They threatened Hill and beat him some more before they left him alone. This was the
terror that newly freed slaves were facing, and the terror Schurz was talking about.... Show more

Dual Language Adoption Paper
Currently, school districts statewide are required to identify limited English Proficiency (LEP)
students and adopt policies in providing programing which is mainly locally funded with some
state aid. The Office for Bilingual Education and Foreign Language Studies were established in
1969. Over the last decade, there has been a growth in the number of dual language programs in
the US with goals of bilingualism and biliteracy but many of these programs are expensive and
exclusive. (Franklin, 2013) Texas has the second largest ELL population and the largest bilingual
educationprogram where there are 7 school districts that offer two way dual language programs
which are offered to both native English speakers and native Spanish speakers. Florida has the
Coral Way School, a genuine bilingual program, which has been successful, receiving many
accolades since 1936. In 2010, Florida had a population of 227,000 LEP students for which their
districts are required to prepare and submit plans for ELL one way developmental bilingual
education or dual language services. (Queens University, 2010) California has more than 1.5

Essay on The Red Room and The Cone by H.G. Wells
The Red Room and The Cone by H.G. Wells
Both stories are Gothic mystery stories and were written around the late eighteenth century to the
early nineteenth century. These sorts of stories usually have a setting of a dark, abandoned and
scary place. The Red Room is about a young man who visits a castle and feels he must spend a
night in a mysterious room that is suspected to be haunted. The Cone is about a woman having an
affair with a man called
Raut. The story is based around the husband who is called Horrocks seeing Raut with his wife.
However it is not known whether or not
Horrocks knows if his wife is having an affair with Raut.
The opening of all three stories start with dialogue and immediately help to create ... Show more

This is because it gives the reader an idea of the person so they can visualise it for themselves,
but at the same time doesn t give the reader enough information which therefore makes the reader
feel more involved in the book. For example, in The Cone it reads a silent grey, shadowy figure.
This description is vague and so it doesn t give the reader a clear picture of the character, and
therefore, this again creates tension because of the lack of description. In the case of The Red
Room there is also a description of a man that possesses a withered arm. This is an uncommon
feature in any person, even one as old as the one mentioned in the story. The reader would think
that there must have been a reason why this old man has this feature and because the reason has
not been explained to the reader, he or she will be compelled to read on to find out how the old
man achieved this withered arm.
Also I believe that the descriptions of major characters and settings would add to the tension and
suspense as well. This is because in giving the reader a small but detailed description of the
setting, it involves the reader more, therefore the reader feels more involved with the book and so
tension is created a lot easier. In The Red Room the sentence chilly echoing passage and long
draughty subterranean passage draws the reader into the story and helps them feel as if they were

The Fight For Women s Suffrage Movement
The Fight For Women s Suffrage
The Women s Suffrage Movement of the 1920 s worked to grant women the right to vote
nationally, thereby allowing women more political equality. Due to many industrial and social
changes during the early 19th century, many women were involved in social advocacy efforts,
which eventually led them to advocate for their own right to vote and take part in government
agencies. Women have been an integral part of society, working to help those in need, which then
fueled a desire to advocate for their own social and political equality. While many women worked
tirelessly for the vote, many obstacles, factions, and ultimately time would pass in order for women
to see the vote on the national level. The 19th Amendment, providing women the right to vote,
enable women further their pursuit for full inclusion in the working of American society.
The Female Advocates
These influential women are most widely known suffragist of their generation and has become
icons of the women suffrage movement. These independent, bold, and intelligent female pioneers
paved the way for so many women different races, and nationalities to come together as one for a
common cause. These women are known today as idols, icons, and activists. Those women that
took a stand when no one else would be: Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and
Lucy Stone. These women believed that all American women, just like men, deserve the rights and
responsibilities of citizenship.

Motives In King Lear
A person s worth is never defined by their external appearances, such as their physical features or
titles, but it lies in the internal thoughts that they base their actions upon. Act I of King Lear, by
William Shakespeare, explores the idea that individuals are defined by their personal values and
motives. This can be seen in the deceitful Goneril and Regan, the good Cordelia, and the
knowledgeable fool. First, both Goneril and Regan give beautiful words of love to their father,
King Lear, but neither sisters have any genuine love for him. During Lears stay at Goneril s
residence, Goneril tells her servant, Put on what weary negligence you please,/ ... If he distaste it,
let him to our sister,/ Whose mind and mine I know in that are one,/ Not to be overruled ... Show

The two sisters plan to neglect and discredit their father and his authority. This act of unkindness
shows that their words of love were only a facade, and their true natures exist as unloving and
uncaring daughters. In contrast, Cordelia cannot profess her love to Lear through words of
flattery, however, her love for her father is deeper and truer than Goneril s and Regan s. When
Cordelia is disowned by Lear and forced to leave, she says to her two sisters, But yet, alas, stood
I within his grace,/ I would prefer him to a better place (I.i.275 276). Despite Lear s rash actions
of abandoning Cordelia, she still loves her father and wishes to take care of him. Cordelia is not
able value her father through words, but her actions define her nature as a daughter and the love
she has for Lear. Lastly, the fool, generally known for their playful antics and humor, displays
wisdom and even offers advice to Lear. Right before Lear leaves to live with Regan, the fool
advises, Thou shouldst not have been old till thou hadst been/ wise. (I.v.42 43). On the surface, the
social title of the fool gives the impression that the person is an inane individual, and his outfit
makes him appear to be silly

This raises serious concerns both about unemployment in the agricultural sector and long term food

The Bank s Community Empowerment Project aimed to establish transparent, democratic, and
accountable local structures in rural areas to make decisions about development projects in a
decentralised fashion. However the programme conflicted with traditional structures.
Even though the Bank argues that its presence has reinforced the position of the government, the
reality is that is has subordinated and marginalised it. Most of the Bank s programme does not
involve the government in the decision making process, undermining the accountability of
democratically elected representatives. In the end, the Bank s presence has created problems rather
than solving them.
They could have avoided this by if they had consulted with the Timorese people.

The Industrial Development Of India
It is stated by the several scholars that British Government never interested to the industrial
development of India. During the British period, the growth of industrial output was hindered due
to the utmost poverty of the rural population of India. The large proportion of the middle class
population had a taste and choice of imported goods instead to indigenous products. The tariff
protection provided by the British government was not enough to protect the industries because the
government was neither interested in the establishment of industrial plants nor in the development

Risk Assessment of Terrorism
Introduction A risk assessment happens to be a crucial element in recognizing mitigation measures.
It comprise of evaluating capability, cause, chance, and targeting. Assessing threats accurately is a
challenge for many countries. In most instances, attaching concerns to tangible and prospective
threats to a country security that is mostly open to policy makers remains a problem. Even agencies
that are generously and of highly, superior intelligence struggles to plan logical and well timed
threat assessments across the security scale. Risk assessment Terrorism is a main challenge to
assess the threats associated with the issue. The act comprise of unstructured associations of
extremely mobile individuals, whose objectives are nearly impractical to weigh without access to
consistent and appropriate human intelligence as terrorist groups remain indefinable. Nevertheless,
assessing the threats from terrorist in the recent years is a significant preoccupation for security
agencies found in the Western countries. Faced with the common, destructive nurture related to
international terrorism common in the contemporary world, evaluating the degree and the threat
scope is critical (Zanders et al 2000). This makes selection of threats to help choose appropriate
measures to defend the state interests, which is a main concentration for political leaders in

The Economic And Social Cost Of Illiteracy
The World Literacy Foundation released a report on illiteracy in 2012 sharing this devastating
news, Shockingly, more than 796 million people in the world cannot read or write. About 67
million children do not have access to a primary school education and another 72 million miss out
on secondary school education (Melbourne, The Economic Social Cost of Illiteracy ). Complete
illiteracy is defined as, a person who cannot read or write at all (Melbourne, The Economic Social
Cost of Illiteracy ). However, there is another kind of illiteracy. This illiteracy is commonly known
as functional illiteracy. Function illiteracy, means an individual may have basic reading, writing
and numerical skills but cannot apply them to accomplish tasks that are necessary to make
informed choices and participate fully in everyday life (Melbourne, The Economic Social Cost
of Illiteracy ). Illiteracy brings multiple negative effects to an individual and his or her family.
The effects of illiteracy include: life threatening health issues, lower incomes and inability to
succeed in his or her career, and it increases crime rates. First, illiteracy carries life threatening
health issues. If someone is illiterate, he or she will be unable to comprehend medical records and
assessments. Thus, never fully understanding their diagnosis, or their treatment plan options. Erin

The Importance Of Western Classical Singing
Introduction
Western classical singing is aim at producing a good quality, clear, natural, relax, and overall loud
enough sound in singing. Vibrato is an important technique in good western classical and operatic
singing. The pitch of the notes quickly changing up and down makes vibrato. It is one of the
important means of musical performance. Like violin, Chinese erhu and other string instruments
playing with rubbing strings. Italian vocal school more likely to say: the key point to tell is it a
good singing, is to see whether there has vibrato or not. (Helen Mitchell, 2004)
Open throat is the way to achieve vibrato. The term open throat is describing the throat in a lack of

The conclusions of the research
Researchers estimated that open throat strategy would create discernable contrasts in vocal quality
and this was affirmed by the perceptual investigation. Audiences were solid in their judgements and
reliably distinguished the strategy in rehashed tests. Singers vocal quality created discernable sound
quality contrasts in 85.3% of optimal and 80.0% of sub optimal tests, which audiences credited to
the educational guideline of open throat . This investigation affirmed teachers acknowledgment of a
central system in established singing beforehand characterised by master educators by a particular
sound quality. Facilitate investigation of the perceptual characteristics of this strategy is the subject
of progressing research by these authors.
Educational and perceptual investigations concur that substandard vibrato is easy to recognise and
shows deficient strategy or poor vocal quality. Regardless of whether decreased vibrato degree and

Nationalism Source Assimilation Eric Cope Analysis
Nationalism Source Interpretation Eric Cope
The author of source I is stating the thought that if you accomplish something and no one knows
about it it will be forgotten completely. Stories, songs, etc leave behind a legacy. An entity to
remember something that has passed. The same goes for nations, before the writing and the
internet the only way to pass on a record was with a story. If no one was told about the
occurrence it would fade off into nothingness. Whereas if told with a story even after you passed
you could be remembered, leaving behind a legacy. The tales we weave and share connect us as a
people allowing things about us to live longer than we do. This is heavily true when it comes to
nations, many of their stories are known all throughout the people. Such as Canada and Terry Fox.
Terry passed in 1981 but is cause still lives on, masses of Canadians know who Terry is and what
he accomplished. Allowing his legacy to echo far after he passed. He has become a symbol of
Canada and it s nationalism. The author is saying that if no one told each other about Terry his
legacy would have faded to unimportance.
Source II is discussing about how interconnected religion and nationalism. The author states that no
matter how absurd and degrading a belief is it still connects people. Creating groups and alliances
between people who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The European Union is suffering with the recent explosion of Brexit, and with Trumps egregious
election adding to the tension. Nationalism is beginning to grow globally, Europe being a prime
example with more countries threatening to leave the European Union. Europe is becoming a
much more nationalistic place. The author seems to be stating that no matter how much support
you give the EU it will fall and we should embrace

Comparing Making Sarah Cry And The Watsons Go To Birmingham
The poem Making Sarah Cry and the play The Watsons Go to Birmingham have a similar theme
of being different. Even though they have the same theme, they show it different ways. For
instance, the characters have a different influence on others. The theme in Making Sarah Cry is
being different. This is the theme because in the poem, it said Sarah was not like the rest, she
was slow and not smart. Sarah wasn t accepted by the boy and his friends. They made fun of the
faces she made, the way she stomped her feet, and the stutter when she spoke. Another reason
why the theme is being different is because when the boy got hurt they treated him differently.
They called him a freak and asked where he got the ugly mask because of his limp and jagged
scar across his face. When he got hit by the car and people started treating him differently, he didn
t like it. Now that people are treating him like he treated Sarah, he rethinks the choices that he has
made. In the poem it says for at last he knew the difference, between what s right and wrong. And
Sarah didn t seem so weird, in his understanding eyes . In this part, he finally realizes that teasing
Sarah and making fun of her, because she was different, was not right.... Show more content on

For instance, most of the white people don t like that African Americans are going to go to their
school. This shows that the theme is being different because the white people don t like the African

Sense Of Identity And Collegiate Academic Achievement Essay

Midterm Reading Summary
Sense of Identity and Collegiate Academic Achievement The authors of this article were presenting
the results of their investigation into the relationship between grade point average (GPA) and the
Big Five personality traits of agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability extraversion
and openness. The subject of this investigation was 434 second semester freshman students
enrolled in an introductory psychology course. The focus of the investigation was to determine
if an individual s sense of identity could be interpreted as a difference variable (Lounsbury, et.
al., 2005, p. 501) that could be measured within a range of low to high. The author s identified
that up until this point much of the research in this area approached identity as a categorical
variable at the nominal level of measurement (Lounsbury et al., 2005, p. 502). Secondly they
identified that in prior research GPA was not measured and evaluated on its impact on student s
sense of identity. There were four separate research questions identified in this investigation that
were the central focus. The first question looked to determine if a positive relationship existed
between GPA and sense of identity. The second question asked if the relationship between GPA
and sense of identity was the same for males and females. The third question looked at if the

Odysseus Heroic Qualities
A man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities is the
dictionary definition of a hero, but the qualities that make one a hero can differ drastically. In the
Odyssey, Odysseus plays the role of the heroic character. He is brave, able to overcome fear,
intelligent, cunning, and much more. Many characters in the Iliad could be perceived as the hero.
Personally, I think it was Patrocolus who took on that role, who was willing to sacrifice himself for
the better of his people. Heroes in the modern day are everywhere, but with much less recognition
than those in the Odysseyand Iliad. In addition to that, they don t have to take a 10 year journey
facing sea monsters and cyclops just to get home to be considered a hero.... Show more content on

Some may argue that he isn t a hero at all, but I think that his heroic qualities, like bravery and
honesty, outweigh his not so heroic ones. Odysseus is brave because of the way he overcame a fear
of his for the benefit of his crew. When Odysseus and his crew landed on the island of Circe, she
turned Odysseus crew into swine, or pigs. Odysseus eventually persuades her to turn his crew
back into men; but when she does so, they were under a trance that she would only diminish if
Odysseus went to the Underworld. Odysseus was terrified, to say the least, but he chose to face
his fear for the welfare of his crew. This also made Odysseus selfless, which is a very important
characteristic of a

Film Critique (the Blind Side)
Week Five Individual Film Critique

Week Five Individual Film Critique
This week for the final film critique I chose to review The Blind Side (2009). In this film Sandra
Bullock plays Leigh Anne Tuohy, a successful interior designer. Her husband Sean Tuohy played
by Tim McGraw is the owner of over 85 fast food franchises including Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried
Chicken, Pizza Hut, and Long John Silver s. In the film Leigh Anne takes a boy named Michael
Big Mike Oher into her home and provides him with the opportunity of a lifetime. Actor Quinton
Aaron takes on the role of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All
American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of Leigh ... Show more

There are also quite a few scenes in the film in which the cameras depth of field and focus are
used in different ways to either focus only on one particular subject in the shot or focus on all
subjects both near and far using a deep focus.
As far as the context of the film is concerned I believe it would be possible to take certain scenes
and piece them together in such a way as to illustrate a theme, but I believe watching the entire
film really brings everything together. I have no personal influences or biases that affected my
opinion of the film. I believe that this film is a very heartfelt and enjoyable story and there are no
overtones that should cause the viewer to be influenced otherwise. Overall I love the story and I
think that the Tuohy family set an amazing example for others to follow.
This film has many genres to include biography, drama, and sports genres. The most prevalent
genre for this film is the biography genre. The Blind Side (2009) tells the story of Michael Oher,
the first round NFL draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens. Through the film the life and times of
Michael are chronicled from his early childhood upbringing in the aptly named Hurt Village, to
the life he now lives as a professional football player in the NFL. The film also incorporates many
theatrical elements of a drama and due to the nature of the film it may also fall into the sports genre.
This film was very enjoyable to watch and there are many reasons that I would watch

  • 2. Adrenal Gland Essay Adrenal gland In mammals, the adrenal glands (also known as suprarenal glands) are the triangular shaped endocrine glands that sit on top of the kidneys. They are chiefly responsible for releasing hormones in conjunction with stress through the synthesis of corticosteroids and catecholamines, including cortisol and adrenaline (epinephrine), respectively. Anatomy and function Anatomically, the adrenal glands are located in the retroperitoneum situated atop the kidneys, one on each side. They are surrounded by an adipose capsule and renal fascia. In humans, the adrenal glands are found at the level of the 12th thoracic vertebra. Each adrenal gland is separated into two distinct structures, the adrenal cortex and medulla, both of which ... • 3. The Life You Save May Be Your Own Short Story Analysis What brings you true joy? Is it family and friends, a religion, or some material item? In the short story, The Life You Save May Be Your Own, Flannery O Connor gives examples of what can bring Tom Shiftlet joy and what he chooses instead. A tramp, Shiftlet, wanders to the Crater house in search of a job. Mrs. Crater knows her farm needs a good fixing, so she allows Shiftlet to sleep in the car and will feed him if he fixes things at the house. Mrs. Crater tries to pawn her daughter, Lucynell, off on Shiftlet. Mrs Crater offers the car Mr. Shiftlet fixed, a place to live, and $17.50 just to marry Lucynell. Shiftlet finally agrees and accepts the bribe. On their honeymoon, Shiftlet leaves Lucynell at a diner and moves forward with his new car. A major theme that O Connor repeated throughout her short storywas how many things can block your vision of what truly matters in life. O Connor reflects in all of her writings that God, and his gifts, are the things that can bring everlasting joy. She knows that there are always roadblocks in the way, though. Throughout the short story, The Life You Save May Be Your Own, Flannery O Connor uses literary elements of symbolism, characterization, and naturalism to develop her theme of finding what truly matters in life. Symbols within a story can help to represent greater meaning out of one piece of work. Flannery develops symbolism through the car and through Shiftlet. Shiftlet is compared to Christ the savior many times, but then later reveals himself to be more of an anti Christ. O Connor describes Shiftlet as a wanderer who, swung both his whole and his short arm slowly so that they indicated an expanse of sky and his figure formed a crooked cross (O Connor 675). This is the first time that Flannery compares Shiftlet to JesusChrist by forming a cross. The cross is very symbolic towards Jesus because that is how God shows his love to all mankind. Shiftlet only has one arm, though, which shows that if he were to be compared to Jesus, he would be a flawed Christ. Not only does the crooked cross symbolize a flawed Christ, but also foreshadows that Shiftlet may tend to show a flaw or even deny God s compassion. The car that Shiftlet voluntarily fixes is also a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Invention Of Inkjet Printing The concept of inkjet printing originated in the 20th century, and the technology was first extensively developed in the early 1950s. Starting in the late 1970s inkjet printers that could reproduce digital images generated by computers were developed, mainly by Epson, Hewlett Packard (HP), and Canon. Although inkjet printers only appeared on the consumer market in the late 1980s, they had been under development for more than twenty years by that time. In the mid 1970s, printer companies realized the potential of the technology that would make dot matrix printers obsolete. The challenge, however, was to come up with a way to create an affordable inkjet printerthat would reliably create high quality print outs .In the worldwide consumer market, four manufacturers account for the majority of inkjet printer sales: Canon, HP, Epson, and Lexmark, a 1991 spin off from IBM.[1]( IBM Archives: 1990s . 03.ibm.com. • 8. Plath s Effective Use of Characterization in The Initiation Millicent faces conflict the entire story, whether it was internal or external. Conflict was necessary, because it helps develop the characterization of Millicent and other characters in the story. Characterization is necessary, because it portrays Millicent s feelings toward the initiation and the character plot of other characters. Millicent is faced with a decision in the short story, whether to be initiated or not. The use of character plot and theme play a role in the final decision that Millicent makes. The author uses characterization and conflict effectively in the short story to create character plot and theme. Characterization is effectively used to create character plot and portray the theme of the story. This is effectively used by the author through Millicent s thoughts and through the use of other characters. For instance, Millicent continually tells herself that what girl wouldn t want to be elected like she was (Plath 240). She repeatedly tells herself ideas such as this, because she is trying to convince herself that she is making the right choice. Another instance is shown when Tracy tells Millicent that Millicent will change, whether she thinks she will or not (240). Through the words Tracy states, Millicent realizes that she is lying to herself. Consequently, through the earlier examples, the characterization of Millicent and other characters creates the character plot in the story. The character plot in the story shows how Millicent has to make a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Karl Marx A century and a half ago, Karl Marx established a theory that today is known as the backbone to modern socialism and communism. Marx viewed the early capitalism of his own day as inherently exploitive. At the core of capitalist production is what is considered surplus value, the value left over after the producer (in Marx s case, factory owner) had paid the fixed costs of production such as raw materials, machinery, overhead and wages. The left over amount was kept as profit, a profit that Marx saw that was earned from the sweat of the labor. Derived from his idea of surplus value was that of alienation. Marx gave an economic interpretation to alienation. People were alienated from their own labor; their work was appropriated by someone... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In realizing that the capitalist had a new tool with which they could barter or trade, they also realized they now had an effective tool to keep the cost of the labor commodity down and in effect control those of the labor community that would become trouble for the new way of doing things in this new capitalist, industrial, power creating realm. The first casualty was and is always the worker in a capitalist society, according to Marx. See, first of all, Marx saw the many workers as victims who were or are taking advantage of by the owners of the factories and other means of production to satisfy the gain of profit by the few capitalists. Marx argued that under capitalism labor seldom receives more than bare subsistence. According to Marx, the surplus remaining is appropriated by the capitalists as their profits. This was a belief that many laborers, trying to organize to obtain better wages and work conditions during early commercial capitalism, held and acted upon. Arguing that the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles, (500) and that liberal governments and ideology were merely agents of the exploiting owners of property, Marx advocated the abolition of private property and predicted the demise of capitalism after a series of recurring crises. The abolition of property, and therefore of class ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. The Awakening Summary Yaeger s Critique of Chopin s The Awakening In A Language Which Nobody Understood : Emancipatory Strategies in The Awakening, Patricia Yaeger questions the feminist assumption that Edna Pontellier s adulterous behavior represent a radical challenge to patriarchal values. Using a deconstructionist method, Yaeger argues that in the novel adultery functions not as a disrupting agent of, but, rather, as a counterweight to the institution of marriage, reinforcing the very idea it purports to subvert by framing female desire within an elaborate code [of moral conduct] that has already been negotiated by her society. Yaeger takes issue with Tanner s contention that extramarital desire functions in the 18th and 19th century novel as an attack on the rules governing the opposed demands of private desire and public law, rules that are mediated by the institution of marriage. (Tanner 13) While Yaeger agrees with Tanner that adulterous behavior by literary heroines does challenge one expression of patriarchy, Yaeger characterizes this challenge as only mildly transgressive, noting that adultery remains well within the arena of permissible social trespass. According to Yaeger, Edna s falling in love with Robert Lebrun is an act of social misconduct that is easily imagined by, and indeed is anticipated by, the bourgeois Creole society she inhabits. Thus, Tanner errs when he equates adultery in the novel with the possible breakdown of all the mediations on which society itself depends ; rather, Yaeger notes, for Edna the thought or practice of adultery...is actually a conservative gesture within the larger scheme of things, another mode of social acquiescence. • 13. Airplane Of Hope Speech Airplane of Hope Dear Mr.Hawkins , my former, history teacher, I know you are set in your idea that the destruction of the Berlin Wall was the turning point of WWll, I strongly disagree. Even though there were significant, life changing, humanitarian efforts made by the U.S, the Berlin Airlift was one of the greatest of these efforts. This was one of the strongest humanitarian efforts made because America supplied food for the starving people of West Berlin, granted them the gift of hope when there was nothing left to hope for, and assisted every step of the way until the terrible separation between East Berlin and West Berlin. When the Soviets took their share of Germany with France, Britain, and the U.S., the Soviets made the choice to separate Germany into eastern and western divisions. This was done so that they could extend communism into a war torn Europe. After World War Two, there wouldn t have been any better timing. The war gave them an open door to start communism all over again because no one would ve been able to stop whatever came in their path. The events leading to the Airlift began with Russia s iron fist and persistence to conquer everything. The Russians prayed that the poverty and a war torn Western Europe would give them the chance to spread communism into the western half of Europe (Griffin). The poem is set in the Lake District of Wordsworth s youth, and embodies the ideals of the Romantic Era; that nature and human intuition have a kind of knowledge not found in books and formal education. When confronted as to why he spends his time at the lake, musing and contemplating, Wordsworth replies with what was to become a memorable moment in english literature; nature nurtures the mind in a unique way, with it s own wisdom, one which cannot be found in the pages of scholarly books. To stimulate his senses entirely, a man must just sit in the presence of nature. This was an idea found in the works of many romantic poets, who were thought to have a distrust in mankind, but found peace and knowledge in closeness with nature. Romantic poetry allowed us to see their world directly and much of romantic poetry invited the reader to identify the protagonists with the poets themselves. (Abrams) The metre of this poem is in iambic tetrameter, which places emphasis on the power of nature. For example, in the first line, the words old and stone are emphasised by the metre, pointing towards the poets belief in the power and importance of nature. Again, in the third stanza, the metre points towards moth and earth , furthering the pointed use of nature as a genre. it has been common in critical writing since the romantic period to equate the loosening of specifically metrical restrictions ... • 15. Nanking Massacre And The Nanking Massacre In 1937, the Chinese city of Nanking was devastated when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded, killing around 300,000 people . The Japanese soldiers went into people s homes searching for Chinese soldiers, and killing civilians. These devastating events are known as the Rape of Nanking , or as the Nanking Massacre. However, the history of atrocities like this are not always taught. Things such as the Japanese history textbook controversy show how one event can be remembered, or portrayed, in many different ways. For the most part, history can be skewed for political reasons. For Japan, making history their own had benefits, and these benefits could help the government keep their people on their side of things, and it would try to legitimize their own views on their history. The forming of loyalty and patriotism through selective teachings of the Nanking Massacre has built tensions between China and Japan that have, and still do, separate two nations. The history, which is taught correctly in most nations, is horrifying. The Nanking Massacre lasted for a span of a few months, with Japanese soldiers sparing no man, woman or child. The title Rape of Nanking is to describe the raping of women, numbering anywhere from 20,000 to 80,000 . Throughout the course of the movie, Monsignor had many successes in his operation, even with the attempts by Kappler to destroy the group because O Flaherty had clever plans and several disguises. In the larger picture, the forces of good were symbolized by the Allies. As the war progressed, these forces of good had success as they pushed down into Italy and overcame German resistance. When the Allies finally entered Rome in the summer of 1944, Monsignor joined the celebration of liberation and the conquering of the forces of evil in Italy. The forces of good had their successes but also had their failures. For example, when Kappler is recaptured escaped prisoners, he exploited and oppressed the population and many of O Flaherty s friends were either arrested or killed. Also, Monsignor was also the target of an assassination attempt which failed though. Even though Kappler tried many times to shut O Flaherty s operation down, the rescue organization continued in saving many lives, which can be looked at as a major ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. The British s Involvement During The 1947-1948 War Of... Chenika Bukes Over 20,000 people were murdered during the 1947 1948 War of Independence. The British s involvement in the conflict during the 1910 s 1940 s is responsible for those deaths through a narrative of events in the upcoming years to the war. The British fuelled the Arab Israeli conflict by antagonising the Palestinian Arabs, by sentencing the Jewish people to death and by beginning the 1947 1948 Mandatory Palestine war of independence. The Arab Israeli conflict roughly began with minor disagreements and altercations since the late 19th century up until present day. Whenever the British got involved in the conflict, something seemed to go wrong. The Arabs were antagonised by the British when the McMahon agreement was not seen through. The White paper, commissioned by the British, created a death sentence for the Jewish people Dr.Weizmann (1939, June), and when the British withdrew from the conflict a series of events led to the 1947 1948 war of independence. The McMahon Agreement was constituted on the 24th of October 1915 between the Meccans and the British. Upon the rise of Arab nationalism, the Arabs (Meccans) pursued independence from the Ottoman Empire. Amir Abdullah, son of Hussein Bin Ali the Sharif of Mecca, visited the British general consul in Egypt in February of 1914. His incentive was to verify that the British will recognise Arab independence if they support the British in war with purpose to abdicate the Ottoman Turks. Then in 1917 the ... He was talking about how the terror against any colored person was definitely still going on. Schurz talks about how black people were being; kidnapped, maimed, killed, and have been disappearing (M.P. Johnson pg.4). The treatment was not going to get better because the southern whites have an ingrained feeling that the blacks at large belong to the withes at large... (M.P. Johnson pg.5). He s pretty much saying that the black peopleare still being looked down upon by the whites in the south. This ties in with how Hill and many of his family were being treated. For example, Hill talks about how one night, people came knocking at the door of his brother. These people were no other than the K.K.K. They were looking for him and bludgeoned his sister in law to get the information about Hill s whereabouts. When the woman couldn t handle the beating, she told them where Hill was. They grabbed Hill out of his wooden shed and started to beat him, until one of the members started talking. They threatened Hill and beat him some more before they left him alone. Dual Language Adoption Paper Currently, school districts statewide are required to identify limited English Proficiency (LEP) students and adopt policies in providing programing which is mainly locally funded with some state aid. The Office for Bilingual Education and Foreign Language Studies were established in 1969. Over the last decade, there has been a growth in the number of dual language programs in the US with goals of bilingualism and biliteracy but many of these programs are expensive and exclusive. (Franklin, 2013) Texas has the second largest ELL population and the largest bilingual educationprogram where there are 7 school districts that offer two way dual language programs which are offered to both native English speakers and native Spanish speakers. Florida has the Coral Way School, a genuine bilingual program, which has been successful, receiving many accolades since 1936. In 2010, Florida had a population of 227,000 LEP students for which their districts are required to prepare and submit plans for ELL one way developmental bilingual education or dual language services. Wells Both stories are Gothic mystery stories and were written around the late eighteenth century to the early nineteenth century. These sorts of stories usually have a setting of a dark, abandoned and scary place. The Red Room is about a young man who visits a castle and feels he must spend a night in a mysterious room that is suspected to be haunted. The Cone is about a woman having an affair with a man called Raut. The story is based around the husband who is called Horrocks seeing Raut with his wife. However it is not known whether or not Horrocks knows if his wife is having an affair with Raut. The opening of all three stories start with dialogue and immediately help to create ... This is because it gives the reader an idea of the person so they can visualise it for themselves, but at the same time doesn t give the reader enough information which therefore makes the reader feel more involved in the book. For example, in The Cone it reads a silent grey, shadowy figure. This description is vague and so it doesn t give the reader a clear picture of the character, and therefore, this again creates tension because of the lack of description. In the case of The Red Room there is also a description of a man that possesses a withered arm. This is an uncommon feature in any person, even one as old as the one mentioned in the story. The reader would think that there must have been a reason why this old man has this feature and because the reason has not been explained to the reader, he or she will be compelled to read on to find out how the old man achieved this withered arm. Also I believe that the descriptions of major characters and settings would add to the tension and suspense as well. This is because in giving the reader a small but detailed description of the setting, it involves the reader more, therefore the reader feels more involved with the book and so tension is created a lot easier. In The Red Room the sentence chilly echoing passage and long draughty subterranean passage draws the reader into the story and helps them feel as if they were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Fight For Women s Suffrage Movement The Fight For Women s Suffrage The Women s Suffrage Movement of the 1920 s worked to grant women the right to vote nationally, thereby allowing women more political equality. Due to many industrial and social changes during the early 19th century, many women were involved in social advocacy efforts, which eventually led them to advocate for their own right to vote and take part in government agencies. Women have been an integral part of society, working to help those in need, which then fueled a desire to advocate for their own social and political equality. While many women worked tirelessly for the vote, many obstacles, factions, and ultimately time would pass in order for women to see the vote on the national level. Motives In King Lear A person s worth is never defined by their external appearances, such as their physical features or titles, but it lies in the internal thoughts that they base their actions upon. Act I of King Lear, by William Shakespeare, explores the idea that individuals are defined by their personal values and motives. This can be seen in the deceitful Goneril and Regan, the good Cordelia, and the knowledgeable fool. First, both Goneril and Regan give beautiful words of love to their father, King Lear, but neither sisters have any genuine love for him. The two sisters plan to neglect and discredit their father and his authority. This act of unkindness shows that their words of love were only a facade, and their true natures exist as unloving and uncaring daughters. In contrast, Cordelia cannot profess her love to Lear through words of flattery, however, her love for her father is deeper and truer than Goneril s and Regan s. When Cordelia is disowned by Lear and forced to leave, she says to her two sisters, But yet, alas, stood I within his grace,/ I would prefer him to a better place (I.i.275 276). Despite Lear s rash actions of abandoning Cordelia, she still loves her father and wishes to take care of him. Cordelia is not able value her father through words, but her actions define her nature as a daughter and the love she has for Lear. Lastly, the fool, generally known for their playful antics and humor, displays wisdom and even offers advice to Lear. Right before Lear leaves to live with Regan, the fool advises, Thou shouldst not have been old till thou hadst been/ wise. (I.v.42 43). Terry passed in 1981 but is cause still lives on, masses of Canadians know who Terry is and what he accomplished. Allowing his legacy to echo far after he passed. Even though they have the same theme, they show it different ways. For instance, the characters have a different influence on others. The theme in Making Sarah Cry is being different. This is the theme because in the poem, it said Sarah was not like the rest, she was slow and not smart. Sarah wasn t accepted by the boy and his friends. They made fun of the faces she made, the way she stomped her feet, and the stutter when she spoke. Another reason why the theme is being different is because when the boy got hurt they treated him differently. They called him a freak and asked where he got the ugly mask because of his limp and jagged scar across his face. When he got hit by the car and people started treating him differently, he didn t like it. Now that people are treating him like he treated Sarah, he rethinks the choices that he has made. In the poem it says for at last he knew the difference, between what s right and wrong. And Sarah didn t seem so weird, in his understanding eyes . In this part, he finally realizes that teasing Sarah and making fun of her, because she was different, was not right.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sense Of Identity And Collegiate Academic Achievement Essay Midterm Reading Summary Peter Carafano Florida State University General Linear Model Application EDF5401 Midterm Reading Summary Sense of Identity and Collegiate Academic Achievement The authors of this article were presenting the results of their investigation into the relationship between grade point average (GPA) and the Big Five personality traits of agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability extraversion and openness. The subject of this investigation was 434 second semester freshman students enrolled in an introductory psychology course. The focus of the investigation was to determine if an individual s sense of identity could be interpreted as a difference variable (Lounsbury, et. al., 2005, p. 501) that could be measured within a range of low to high. The author s identified that up until this point much of the research in this area approached identity as a categorical variable at the nominal level of measurement (Lounsbury et al., 2005, p. 502). Secondly they identified that in prior research GPA was not measured and evaluated on its impact on student s sense of identity. There were four separate research questions identified in this investigation that were the central focus. The first question looked to determine if a positive relationship existed between GPA and sense of identity. The second question asked if the relationship between GPA and sense of identity was the same for males and females. The third question looked at if the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Odysseus Heroic Qualities A man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities is the dictionary definition of a hero, but the qualities that make one a hero can differ drastically. In the Odyssey, Odysseus plays the role of the heroic character. He is brave, able to overcome fear, intelligent, cunning, and much more. Many characters in the Iliad could be perceived as the hero. Personally, I think it was Patrocolus who took on that role, who was willing to sacrifice himself for the better of his people. Heroes in the modern day are everywhere, but with much less recognition than those in the Odysseyand Iliad. In addition to that, they don t have to take a 10 year journey facing sea monsters and cyclops just to get home to be considered a hero.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some may argue that he isn t a hero at all, but I think that his heroic qualities, like bravery and honesty, outweigh his not so heroic ones. Odysseus is brave because of the way he overcame a fear of his for the benefit of his crew. When Odysseus and his crew landed on the island of Circe, she turned Odysseus crew into swine, or pigs. Odysseus eventually persuades her to turn his crew back into men; but when she does so, they were under a trance that she would only diminish if Odysseus went to the Underworld. Odysseus was terrified, to say the least, but he chose to face his fear for the welfare of his crew. This also made Odysseus selfless, which is a very important characteristic of a ... Her husband Sean Tuohy played by Tim McGraw is the owner of over 85 fast food franchises including Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, and Long John Silver s. In the film Leigh Anne takes a boy named Michael Big Mike Oher into her home and provides him with the opportunity of a lifetime. Actor Quinton Aaron takes on the role of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of Leigh ... There are also quite a few scenes in the film in which the cameras depth of field and focus are used in different ways to either focus only on one particular subject in the shot or focus on all subjects both near and far using a deep focus. As far as the context of the film is concerned I believe it would be possible to take certain scenes and piece them together in such a way as to illustrate a theme, but I believe watching the entire film really brings everything together. I have no personal influences or biases that affected my opinion of the film. I believe that this film is a very heartfelt and enjoyable story and there are no overtones that should cause the viewer to be influenced otherwise. Overall I love the story and I think that the Tuohy family set an amazing example for others to follow. This film has many genres to include biography, drama, and sports genres. The most prevalent genre for this film is the biography genre. The Blind Side (2009) tells the story of Michael Oher, the first round NFL draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens. Through the film the life and times of Michael are chronicled from his early childhood upbringing in the aptly named Hurt Village, to the life he now lives as a professional football player in the NFL. The film also incorporates many theatrical elements of a drama and due to the nature of the film it may also fall into the sports genre. This film was very enjoyable to watch and there are many reasons that I would watch ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
