Sigmund Freud s Two Key Ideas About Religion
Freud had two key ideas about religion: firstly, that it was a collective neurosis a universal
mental illness that manifests itself in the form of obsessive rituals and was caused by sexual
repression and guilt and secondly, that it was all part of a phenomenon that he called wish
fulfilment , whereby believers would perceive God to possess all good qualities of mankind and
yet none of the bad. Freud s initial opinion, namely the Oedipus Complex, is split into two parts,
the first of which is that religionis due to the individual s experience of the Oedipus Complex. The
Oedipus Complex, to Freud, was the idea that a human s psychological development was all based
around the libido, and that this desire for sexual satisfaction would be... Show more content on

In other words, there are three key psychological needs that we possess as humans and God has
been created by humans in order to fulfil all three, the first of which is the need for protection
against external threats. Mankind is aware that it has no control over the natural world, which
causes a feeling of fear and helplessness. However, a supernatural God, such as the one most
religions worship, would be capable of offering protection against such events, and so Freud
argued that religious believers carry out ritualistic worship in order to feel as though they have
some control over their God s decisions about these natural disasters. The second idea in wish
fulfilment is that we need protection from our inner instincts; specifically, the sex instinct and
the aggression instinct. Freud says that religions come up with religious rules such as love thy
neighbour in order to extend Platonic love to everyone and so reduce the possibility of hostility.
They then say that these rules are from God in order to get people to follow them. The third part
of Freud s wish fulfilment argument is that we crave a father figure and an afterlife or, in other
words, security. Religious believers look to God as an authority figure and believe that he will
reward those who do good in this life and will punish those who do wrong. Due to the fact that
most humans fear death, the afterlife has been created, in Freud s eyes, as a way of relieving the
fear surrounding

ABSTRACT
Herbal drug therapy is regarded as an important alternative for the treatment of chronic and
infectious disease. Ocimum gratissimum has been used extensively in traditional medicine in many
countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate antioxidant status and antimicrobial activity of the
methanol extract of Ocimum gratissimum (MEOG) and to establish that the antimicrobial activity
is due to its antioxidant potentials. The total antioxidant status was evaluated using DPPH and
ABTS assays and the Folin Ciocalteu reagent method to determine total phenolic content of the
MEOG.The antimicrobial effect was determined by agar diffusion and broth dilution method
against different ATCC strains of pathogenic bacteria. Zones of inhibition, minimum inhibitory
(MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) were determined. The results indicate that
the antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity of MEOG is mainly due to its total phenolic
content

Different Career Paths And How My Personality And Values...
Curious about possibilities, INFPs enjoy all sorts of creative endeavors . According to the
Meyer Briggs Type Indicator test, this is just one of the things that describe my personality. It is
difficult to describe a person off of a set of algorithms. However, tests like the MBTI and the
Strong Interest Inventory help pave a pathway to beginning to understand yourself. The results
from both tests amplified a lot of what I already knew about myself and also offered new
insights. Currently I am trying to decide between different career paths and these tests aid in
making the choice. Finally, the values and interests that arise from both tests closely align with
the types of jobs I want to have but also offered new jobs to consider. This class helped me
understand who I am according to the tests, the career path I would like to take, and how my
personality and values align with my future goals.
The Strong Interest Inventory analyzed my interests and gave me the theme of Social. The test
highlighted many interests that are prevalent to me. For example, it states that I enjoy people,
teamwork, helping and community service. I am a theater and community major with an applied
psychology minor. One of the main reasons I chose this major is because it aligns with all those
aspects. Theater involves people, teamwork, and community service while applied psychology
helps me learn the skills to help others in any context. The Strong said that work activities I enjoy
are teaching,

Essay on An Analysis of the Jungle by Upton Sinclair
In the early 1900 s life for America s new Chicago immigrant workers in the meat packing
industry was explored by Upton Sinclair s novel The Jungle. Originally published in 1904 as a
serial piece in the socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason, Sinclair s novel was initially found too
graphic and shocking by publishing firms and therefore was not published in its complete form
until 1906. In this paper, I will focus on the challenges faced by a newly immigrated worker and
on what I feel Sinclair s purpose was for this novel. In the early 1900 s a newly arrived immigrant
worker faced numerous challenges that had to be overcome. Often times literally arriving with the
clothes on their back and a few meager dollars, it was crucial for these... Show more content on

While not all of these examples have a direct monetary impact, each of the dealings associated
with them does which in turn motivates the parties involved to make decisions and perform
actions outside the normal scope for their character. The third challenge faced by new
immigrants was acquiring and then keeping steady work. Although the Packingtown in Chicago
was in a constant state of activity, the sheer number of available workers and the rule of supply
and demand made it difficult for some to find work. It was not uncommon for some workers to
stand at the plant doors for weeks before being selected. And once a person was chosen to be a
worker, they had to labor at a fever pitch to make sure they were retained. That being said, the
worker s problems did not end once they found steady employment. Employers were harsh and
unforgiving in how they treated their employees. For example, if an employee was one minute
late they were penalized an hours pay. If they were 20 minutes late they forfeited their
employment. Worse yet, if they were injured or hurt on the job the company takes no
responsibility and the worker is forced to recuperate on their own time without pay (i.e.; when
Jurgis sprained his ankle and had to recuperate at home for 3 months). The final insult to the
workers was that even if they were always on time, worked hard and maintained their health they
could lose their job due to the

The Grapes Of Wrath
At the heart of every immigrant s experience is a dream a vision of hope that is embodied in his or
her destination (Gladstein, p. 685). In the novel, The Grapes of Wrath, it is portrayed that the
migrant s thoughts of an American Dream is/was a simple and straightforward notion: go west
(California), get employment and become rich. Little did they that know that an ideal and perfect
life was difficult to accomplish and it corrupted the minds of those pursuing it. The author, John
Steinberg, placed a lot of emphasis on the unachievable nature of the American Dream regarding
economic stability in the novel through the cross country migration of the Joads, their continuous
and unpredictable changes in employment and eventually, their failure to find the success they so
desired in California (Aghosh, Allentown, PA).
The novel, The Grapes of Wrath, is an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Joads were going down something of a tricky intense street a way of escape from misery to
an uncertain Californian deliverance (Spangler). It can be reasoned that when the one and only
option is putting the family on the road to a foreign place, problems arise (Spangler) and the
Joads faced many problems. Connie, among his relatives, chose to accept reality rather than to
live in a fantasy pursuing the American Dream. For instance, Connie strikes out all alone... he then
forsakes the Joads adamant quest for ranch work for the open doors in the city (Bloom, p. 18).
Connie understood that pursuing the American Dream was an exercise in vainness and although
he ran far from the matters of money related uncertainty by leaving his significant other and child,
he was essentially doing what was reasonable and rather taken after a future that would best suit
him. While the Joads were on an endless excursion in search of the American Dream, they didn t
discover any jobs that suited their trust of a money related way of

My Ananotating Style
I decided to annotate pages 2 and 3 from our Writing Analytically textbook because the contents
of those two pages helped me grasp the importance of analyzing information more. Since the copy
of the textbook that I have is an e book, I was originally going to annotate them on my computer.
But I realized that my annotations on my laptop were very restricted, and were not as in depth as I
would like them to be, so I decided to print out both pages and annotate them the old fashioned way.
My annotating style doesn t have as much structure in comparison to the techniques that others
incorporate, but it has proven fruitful for me so far. To annotate, I used a couple of different items.
Among these are blue and pink pens, and a yellow highlighter.

Use Of Narrative Voice In Atonement
Narrative voice and points of view are indispensable parts of storytelling. Explore the use of
narrative voice employed by the authors of Atonement and A Room with a View.
In the novel Atonement, the author Ian McEwan uses narrative voice to grasp the attention of the
reader whilst alternating points of view to create a diverse plot. He does this through the novel
being perceived as several narrators for us to then realise it s one voice. McEwan uses prolepsis to
hint at future events which he uses to intrude the story. In the same way, this is also an evident
theme in E.M Forster s a Room with a View. Similarly, to Atonement, A Room with a View has a
thought provoking narrative viewpoint in the sense that it is a bildungsroman about Lucy
Honeychurch. Forster writes in an omniscient tone, which means that the characters are dictated to
us his narration and the character s dialogue; this debatably affects the reader s sympathy to the
other characters in the play like Cecil Vyse. Likewise, it is evident that authorial intrusion creates a
high level of authenticity to the story.
In Atonement, it is evident that the author Ian McEwan is trying to highlight the characters inner
mental state, he does this by using the literacy device of prolepsis. McEwan steps back from the
original first person narrative to describe how Briony was struggling with the temptation to flounce
from the room . He repeats this device throughout the novel, using metanarrative to build up tension.

Test Mistakes
I consider myself a poor test taker. This is not because of anxiety or not studying all of the
material, but because I find myself making wrong decisions on challenging tests. Decisions such as
leaving a question blank when short on time or second guessing myself to the wrong answer have
resulted in me scoring lower on a test. I recognize my testing mistakes and I have greatly
improved over the years. The problem with the tests that I have taken is that I was never taught
how to effectively take exams. I have taught myself how to take tests for the most part (aside from
the basic skills such as skim through the test packet when starting, and skip a question and come
back to it later if it is difficult). Despite not being a great test taker,... Show more content on

First, my longer exams tend to be my worst exams. It is strenuous to sit down for an extended
period of time to devote all my energy and concentration on an exam. Another factor is the type of
questions used on the exam. The SAT is primarily multiple choices, and the calculus exam was
composed mostly of long problems. My better test was one that had a mixture of several question
types and covered the material in conceptual and applied ways. Lastly, all tests were challenging,
but my chemistry professor found the right balance of complexity in the problems. Overall, I
believe that many students struggle with school partially because of their testing experience.
Learning the curriculum and having good testing experiences has an effect on students becoming

Protest Of The NFL Protest And The Protest In The Anthem
Recently NFL players have decided to kneel during the playing of the national anthem. The reason
they are doing this is to protest a number of things ranging from the unfair treatment of African
Americans to protesting against various things in their local communities. The protests started out
as just a few players taking knees during the anthem, but this past week it escalated to the majority
of the NFL taking part in some sort of protest. What sparked these players to join in was a tweet
by Donald Trump that read, If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the
NFL,or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or
Country) and should stand for the National Anthem. If not, YOU RE FIRED. Find something
else to do! (Trump). This tweet led most NFL players to take part in their teammates protest to
join in solidarity. While many people believe that these non violent protests are effective, there
is also a large number of people who believe that these protests are disrespectful to our flag and
country. They want their professional athletes to stick to sports and not make it so political.
James Robbins shared his opinion on these protests in an opinion piece for USA Today. He
believes that the protests are taking away from the fun stating, The NFL is on a politically correct
suicide course, alienating fans and wrecking ratings (Robbins). He goes on to say that Colin
Kaepernick started this issue by taking a knee

Fight or Flight Response: The Armor He Wears
Succeeding the untimely events of 9/11, Jonathan Foer s novel, Extremely Loud and Incredibly
Close, follows the life of Oskar Schell, a young boy experiencing trauma from his father s
calamitous death. The catastrophe, which prompts Oskar to embark on a transformative journey,
parallels the accident that left his grandfather, Thomas Schell Sr., mute. These events also adversely
affect Oskar, as he exhibits a variation of the fight response by building armour around himself,
hiding his true feelings. This internal imbroglio culminates when Oskar sees a photo of an

I want to stop inventing. If I could know how he died, exactly how he died, I wouldn t have to
invent him dying inside an elevator that was stuck between floors...There are so many different
ways to die, and I just need to know which was his (Foer 257). Oskar longs to know what really
happened to his Dad, because he is tired of wearing his armor, even being willing to compromise
who he is, inventing, just to find out the truth. The Falling Man photo gives Oskar a sense of
relief, thinking highly of his father, because he died trying. Life is scarier than death (Foer 322).
The Grandfather takes the letters he writes every day and dumps them all into his son s empty
coffin, finally feeling as if the messages had been delivered. Because of his original flight
response, he ended up losing his son for a lifetime, but seeing the photo of the Falling Man
helped him realize that life is scary, but if there s only one chance to live it, then live it right. I
made the only choice I could have made, the woman answers. I would have never made the choice
not to know (Junod 18). Thomas ended up returning out of curiosity, and Oskar stops inventing to
inquire about his dad s death. This curiosity leads them both to the photo of the Falling Man, where
they learn to appreciate the time they had with Thomas Jr. Their flight or fight response almost
ruined any chance of closure

My Childhood Memory
Roy, Timmy, and I sat on a log near a stream. Roy was the oldest out for all of us, and was more
logical in his thinking. He was approaching ten, and was starting to demand respect. Timmy Was
a little bit older then me, and was quite disgusting. I was the youngest, and being the only girl, I
was often picked on by the older two. My ideas were often consider irrelevant, and because they

what looked like a car. Hey guys, I said as I stood up from the log, elongating my arm and pointer
finger at my discovery. The boys eyes grew in amazement. Is that a car?! Roy asked
flabbergasted. Timmy took off running for the car. Hey wait up! I yowled, dashing after him.
Timmy was like a monkey clambering up the tree. His movement was eloquent, and he was
already forming muscle mass at the age of seven. I climbed up after him, and Roy followed
behind. Timmy tried to force the door open. I could see that he was getting frustrated. The door
was wedged between the tree. The doors stucked dummy! Roy shouted behind us. I climbed
around to the other side of the car, and yanked on the car door. MOVE! Timmy pushed me to the
side, almost pushing me to the ground. Timmy yet again failed at opening the door. The car is

Japanese Dining History and Foods of Izakaya and Japanese...
Japanese cuisine has developed over two hundred years and influenced by both China and
Korea. In Asia, rice has been the major staple food in many countries. However, in Japan, rice
has also been used to brew sake, a traditional alcohol drink which always appears in every kinds
of Japanese restaurant today, such as Izakaya. Traditionally, a meal contains a bowl of rice and
seasoned side dishes for each one person. (Naomichi Ishige 2000) However, in Izakaya type

Indian Removal
Indian Removal At the start of the Revolution in 1776 many of the patriots view towards the
Indians was that of Thomas Jefferson s, the paternalistic view. That the Indians were noble
savages, uncivilized in their present state but if they would adapt to ways of the white society
they could be redeemed. While others felt that they should be treated as conquered people
because some of the tribes helped the British in the War, one of which was the Mohawks. That
was one the main reason why most of the tribes choose to stay out of the war. At this point in
time the patriots felt that they were merely trying to provide for their families and start a new
life in the new world. But to the Indians they felt that the patriots were trying to push them off
their lands, threatening their families and their way of life. And over time these views towards
each other change with each push westward on the part of the patriots and each conflict of
resistance on the part of the Indians. As the new nation grew the need for more land became
evident, as a way of trying to bring resolve the government signed treaties with the tribes. The
treaties promised them protection of the lands they had held if they ceded certain lands. But when
it came right down to it treaty after treaty was broken, which lead to more and more distrust by the
Indians. As time passed the views of Indians changed, in the early 1800 s whites viewed Indians as
savages that should be removed from the valuable land that the

Poetry By Freidoon Tavallali
Soon a generation of young poets began various experiments, which led to the creation of
modern poetry. Some regarded themselves as the followers of Nima Youshij, but many, though
inspired by his innovations tried to find an independent path. Fereidoon Tavallali, for instance,
remained very restrained in his innovations, limiting them to a small variation of form. He
usually divided his poems into verses of four hemistiches, with the second and fourth hemistich
of each verse having the same rhymes. In his poetical outlook, Tavallali was deeply influenced
by the lyric poets of the past. In fact most of his poems are either expansions of the themes in
single couplets of classical ghazals, or a whole ghazal with a new rhyming pattern. Some of his
greatest poems are those written in a descriptive, in some cases a narrative form, recounting his
own moods and feelings, or of his beloved s behavior.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the word structure of his poems, he is greatly influenced by Nezami Ganjavi, using many new
compound words, nominal and adjectival phrases for expressing the same things usually expressed
in ordinary grammatical sentences. This makes his poems sound pompous, confusing the lucidity
of his thoughts. Perhaps Tavallali did not have much to offer in terms of modernism in the true
poetical values. Almost nothing new can be found in his poems that suggests a discovery, a
revelation in poetical vision. His cries of the joy and sorrow of love, his sentimental illustrations of
nature, and his pretentious pessimism, stripped of linguistic ornaments, would be reduced to the
level of the outpourings of an

Examples Of How Democratic Was Andrew Jackson Dbq
How Democratic Was Andrew Jackson?
Democracy is defined as the people having a say in the government, whether it be through
representatives or directly. When answering the question How Democratic Was Andrew Jackson?
, I would say that Andrew Jackson was the embodiment of democracy when it came to the people
having a say. During his presidential campaign in 1828 Andrew Jackson s campaign motto was Let
the people have a say! Jackson believed that rich and powerful people got away with bending the
acts of the government to get what they wanted, as shown in document 4. In this document he told
Congress
.It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their selfish
purposes.
Document 6 show a perfect example of just how democratic President Jackson was. One of the
first things he did when he was elected into office was present the idea to congress that any
government elected job be limited to a four year term. I submit, therefore, to your consideration...(a)

Economic Overview of Indonesia
Executive Summary Executive Summary This paper examines the economic environment of
doing business in Indonesia. It takes into account several dimensions such as political, legal,
economics, social and technology factors. However, economics and political factors are covered
in depth as they have a greater impact on establishing advantages and challenges when a firm
might decide to set up a business in Indonesia. The results show that not only legal origins have an
impact on corporate finance, ownership and structure, but also politics. The poor quality of the
judiciary and legal system and the bureaucracy is much more a legacy of the Soeharto government
than of the Dutch colonial system (and French civil law). From the analysis of... Show more content

In order to understand the causes of these fluctuations and its recent rapid increase, it is crucial
to look at the different indicators that have caused the aforementioned fluctuations. Business
Environment In 2004, Indonesia overall score dramatically decreased. It was mainly due to a
decrease of its monetary and investment freedom indicators (see Exhibit 4 and 5 relatively).
Whereas its rapidly increase from 2005, it was mainly due to an increase of its trade (see
Exhibit 6) and again monetary freedom indicators. Between 2002 and 2004, the monetary
freedom indictors decreased as a result of a number of factors, including a loss of policy
credibility, currency weakness, deteriorating terms of trade and a reduction in fuel price subsidies.
In 2004 the annual inflation reached 18.14%, Inflation became the principal threat to economic
stability; the government intervened reforming the monetary policy. (see Exhibit 7) As a result of
this action, the capital of the banking system become more adequate and liquidity indicators
improved over the years. The quality of loan portfolios has also been strengthened. State owned
banks have a large presence in the sector and the non bank sector is relatively small. Interest rates
have been declined and this contributed to increase lending. Rapid increase in credit expansion

Christian Ethics Class At St. Joseph Home Care
As part of my Christian Ethics class, I volunteered in St. Joseph Home Care for three hours. It s an
organization led by Ukrainian nuns and they have been for years now. The Home Care is mainly
filled with elders and primarily are Ukrainians or Canadians. During the time I volunteered, I
learned many things about myself and others. Also, I experienced new things that influenced me.
My best experience was when I met an old man named Peter. I remember Peter as a funny and
cool person. Peter was probably the best part in volunteering at St. Joseph because he was very
fun to be with. He loves to sing very loudly and it s just amusing to watch. This one time, Peter

were absolutely welcoming, warm and kind people. Not only that, I was treated nicely because my
mom works there too and they knew me since I always visit my mom. So, they weren t strangers to

During my time in St. Joseph s, I was the only student at Ed Feehan, who volunteered there, but a
student from Holy Cross also volunteered there too. His name was Ben. Ben was extremely cool
and funny and we got along very easily. Ben arrived earlier than me and I only got the chance to
spend thirty minutes with him.
The Imitation of Christ
The way I imitated Christ was when I showed people the true meaning of kindness and
cheerfulness. What I did was a great example of what Jesus did for his people. He helped and in
return, he brought back the idea of contentment to the people. Not only I served the people, but
most importantly, I served Jesus. He expected us to follow his way meaning to help each and
everyone, no matter who the person is.

Dear Mr. President by Pink Essay
Throughout the 2000s most mainstream music that was heard on the radio was pop, rap, and/or R
B with the subject of the songs being of common thoughts nothing to make a stir about. One artist
that developed during this time was Pink counteracting some notions about war, gay rights, and the
general state of America with her song Dear Mr. President . I believe that Dear Mr. President
should be included in MUSC2019 because this song brings together pop and folk influences while
using different techniques such as repetition, metaphors and dynamics to enhance the effect of the
song has on the audience.
The verse starts with an acoustic guitar using a walking tempo and melancholy tone. Dear Mr.
President, Come take a walk with me. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here she comes down a level from the previous verse reminding herself that to get her point across
she need stay compose and returns to the original slow rhythm. In this verse she uses repetition to
emphasize the power of the title lonely boy . Continuing with How can you say no child is left
behind? Referring to Bush s No Child Left Behind Act implemented in an attempt to recuse
Americas education system.
In the fourth verse the guitar grows louder along with the harder questions being asked. What
kind of father would take his own daughter s rights away? And what kind of father might hate his
own daughter if she were gay? I can only imagine what the First Lady has to say. The verse
addresses Bush s position on abortion and gay rights linking these issues to his wife, all of which
could have an effect on her being a women herself.
This verse is the peak of the song signalled by the rise in instrumentals and angry vocals.
Throughout this 12 line verse hard work is repeated 9 times. Looking at the lyrics there seems to
be a shift here from the main political focus we saw before to a more general message about the
adversities that people in America face. The anger present dissipates quickly as the guitar slows the
mood again closing the song in the same melancholy tone it began with.
This song comes after 9/11 a time where a lot of songs expressed anger with the government. I
believe though that Pink s song is a little different

The Numbers And Counting System In Ancient Egypt
Numbers and counting systems are used daily by everyone. Numerous civilizations throughout
history like Egypt, Babylonian, Maya and Africa developed a unique number system. They were
commonly used to communicate numbers in an everyday life. Since then counting has changed. A
few of the earlier systems had principles that survived and helped in some way, shape or form to
create our current Hindu Arabic numbering system. It has become widespread. Back in 3000 B.C,
ancient Egypt was using the numbersystem to calculate areas of land, distribute money, and much
more. The Egyptian counting system consisted of hieroglyphs and pictorial signs. The graphic
numbers can be of a person, animal, or plant. The hieroglyphic numbers were a written form of
the number system. It used a decimal base approach. For all the powers of ten, there was a unique
symbol. For example, the number ten was represented as a upside down U , for the number a
hundred thousand it was tadpole, for a million it was represented by a man kneeling with his arms
raised. When reading or writing the number, it is written from right to left. It was written on
temples, vases, and stone monuments. The Egyptians used hieroglyphic numbers to advance in
architectural achievements. Math was used to make historical creations like tombs and pyramids.
Greenwald and Thomley agree that the ancient Egyptians were also aware of fractions, which were
primarily written as unit fractions of the form 1вЃ„n, such as 1вЃ„2or 1вЃ„4...

The Importance Of Fate In The Aeneid
Is life pre ordained? In living, are we consciously making decisions that affect how our lives play
out or are people simply characters preforming from a script containing the information of all of
time? This concept of destiny verses human agency is a common thread through the epic poem, The
Aeneid by Virgil as Aeneasis destined to found Rome, and that Rome that he founds is destined to
prevail and be great. In The Aeneid, destiny is inevitable, because fate is inescapable and will
come to pass in spite of interfering situations as demonstrated in the catalogues of the shield of
Aeneas and the characters presented in the Underworld. Fate is unavoidable, but may not occur
in the expected method as demonstrated by Palinurus in the underworld. This is reminiscent of
Greek oracle prophesies of fate in which the fated future will always occur, but the path along
the way is unknown to humans. Palinurus was foretold [to be] unharmed at sea, yet was
amongst those who did not have a proper burial which brings the truth of the prophecy and fate
into question. He had tried to escape being harmed by being a helmsman, but was still killed
because it was his fate. Fate got around the obstacle of him being at sea, by being knocked
overboard, [washed] close inshore in other words away from the sea, and killed by natives (Virgil
998). It important to note that it was specifically mentioned multiple times in this section that no
god had interfered in this ordeal (Virgil 998). This must therefore be a work of fate that lead to his
death.
Fate occurs regardless of human agency as seen in the tales of Romulus and Remus and Manlius
and the goose. Romulus and Remus were abandoned by their human mother and excepted to die,
but they had a fate to fulfil so could not die. They ended up being cared for by a she wolf who is
part of the natural fate world, not the human controlled world (Virgil 1062).
This notion is continued later on the shield when Manlius, a human, was about to be ambushed
whilst sleeping, but was woken up by the silver goose (Virgil 1062). The Gauls [were] swarming
the thickets, about to seize the fortress, shielded by the shadows of night (Virgil 1063). They were
ready. The time

Tikal: The Great Ancient City
One may know the Stonehenge of England, The Great Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt, and the Roman
Coliseum in Rome, Italy. What one ought to have known is The Great Ancient city of Tikal.
Tikal located in present day Guatemala is just one of the sites of the Mayan Civilization. The
Mayan Civilization ranges from Mexico to the south in Central America. Embedded in their
society were beliefs that evolved around sacrifices to their Gods who were usually past kings.
Although archaeologist have worked hard trying to discover more information about the Mayan
world, they have just scraped the surface of their history. One of the greatest mysteries of the
Maya today is the rapid decline of the society depicted by the last stela, an upright stone slab or
column, located around 869 A.D. at Tikal and 909 A.D. in the Mayan World about 1000 years
before Columbus reached the island of El Salvador in 1492. While there is ... Show more content on

The Long Count calendar was calibrated by means to record major events such as those described
from glyphs on stelae. Starting around the 1960 s archaeologists and researchers turn their focus to
the hieroglyphs left behind by the Maya. Due to the increase of study of the hieroglyphs,
researchers hit a turning point in what they mistakenly knew about the Maya. Like J. Eric
Thompson, Carnegie Institution of Washington archaeologist, many early explorers would have
thought that the Mayan society was very peaceful. This declaration was mistaken since at the time
there was little to no understanding of the Mayan hieroglyphs. Today, with the understanding of
most Mayan writing, archaeologists have concluded that the Maya were warrior like people with a

The Struggles And Inequalities Of Mexican Americans
In the educational setting, Mexican Americans have faced discrimination, segregation, and
inequality for many years. This paper discusses the struggles and inequalities that Mexican
Americans have faced in education. I will focus on different educational time periods and discuss
the problems and struggles that occurred in those time periods. The time periods that I give focus to
include educationin the Spanish Mexican era (1519 1848), education and early Anglo rule in the
Southwest (1836 1890), the expansion of American education (1890 1960), and education in the
contemporary period (1960 present). Education in the Spanish Mexican era lasted from 1519 until
1848. During this period, education occurred in informal and formal settings and was aimed
towards the Indian population, who were Spanish subjects. Education in informal settings was the
general norm and the most important informal settings were missions, presidios, and civilian
settlements. The purpose of educating the Indians was to substitute their identity with a Spanish
one and to also teach them the acceptance of their social relegation. The way the Spanish did this
was by teaching the Indians literacy, music, the Catholic faith, Spanish manners, and by repressing
their indigenous religious and social beliefs (Kloosterman 2). Education and the early Anglo rule in
the Southwest lasted from 1836 until 1890. From 1836 to about 1850, formal education took place
in schools that were founded by the Catholic Church.

Elton John s Influence On The Entertainment World
Polyphony is a musical term used to describe when two different pieces play at the same time,
neither one more pronounced or emphasised than the other, yet the two play nicely together. In this
problem, we have used musical polyphony as an analogy to describe multiple voices and events
happening during a specific decade of the 20th century. Each person in our group is representing a
different individual who had a prevalent voice in multiple areas during the 1980 s. I chose to write
about Elton John, who was polyphonic in entertainment, culture, and civil rights. I will talk about
how he influenced the entertainment world through his music, relevant songwriting, and occasional
acting. We will discuss John s involvement with civil rights, such as AIDs and LGBT rights. And,
finally, we will go over Sir Elton John s influence on culture. Sir Elton John was born on March

After the success of that play, Foote wrote a full length play called the Texas Town which was in

New York Times theater critic Brooks Atkinson showed up at the performance and praised the

Foote had a career as a playwright, television and film screenwriter, and novelist. He stayed
strong to his roots and adapted the Southern writing. His great nine play The Orphan s Home is

epic body of work recalls Chekhov in its quotidian comedy and heartbreak, and Faulkner in its

Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglas
November 29, 2002
Problematic:
Why was it so important for slave owners that their slaves should remain ignorant and what
strategies did they use to achieve this goal?
If you give a nigger an inch, he will take an ell. A nigger should know nothing but to obey his
master to do as he is told to do , a sentence said by Mr Auld in the Narrative of the Life of Frederick
Douglas, written by himself (Boston 1845).
Since last year, I have been interested in slave narratives and I read some about them. And each
time, or almost, I noticed many common features in those books. As we already know, slaves were

Otherwise, what could justify this condition of slaves? Once more, in order to justify their
ownership of other human beings, slave owners must constantly deny the humanity of their slaves.
To convince themselves that their slaves are not quite human, slave owners treat them inhumanely.
Even if some slaveholders were deeply convinced that black people were white men s equal, they
had to deny it or else slavery would stop. This is what Frederick Douglas called the evil of slavery
in his narrative when good natured slave owners had to forget their own feelings and to behave
very severely toward them for the continuation of slavery. In treating their slaves like beasts, the
masters became one themselves.
Then, slave owners separated young slaves from their family very early so as to avoid strong
alliances among the slaves which could be a serious threat to their hold on power. On the
contrary, they wanted to develop a sense of individuality and rivalry among slaves, they were
trying to divide them. For example, slave owners rewarded slaves for giving information on one
another. This is how they partially prevented slaves from forming organized rebellions. There is
an example which shows the efficiency of this practice in Frederick Douglas s narrative since he
is betrayed, probably by one of his closest friend on his first attempt to escape

The Ideology Of American Empire, By Claes G. Ryn
The Ideology of Empire An ideology is a set of doctrines or beliefs that form the basis of a
political, economic, or other system or an orientation that characterizes the thinking of a group or
nation. Different groups can have different ideologies within a community, state, or nation.
According to Claes G. Ryn, in his essay The Ideology of American Empire, America has an
ideology of American empire. John Dewey s ideology regarding America is that it should be a
democratic society. Ideology has four functions: it has power over individuals cognition, guides
individuals evaluations, guides individuals actions, and has a logical coherence. Ryn believes that
America has an American Empire ideology. It has been around for a long time and... Show more

To say that education is a social function, securing direction and development in the immature
through their participation in the life of the group to which they belong, is to say in effect that
education will vary with the quality of life which prevails in a group. I agree with Dewey that
education is a social function because people learn in the presence of others. I also agree with
him regarding variation in education. If a community lives poorly, the education in that
community wouldn t be able to be very effective since its people don t have as much to offer
through participation. Dewey also said that a society which not only changes but which has the
ideal of such changes as will improve it, will have different standards and methods of education
from one which aims simply at the perpetuation of its own customs. This makes sense because if
a society is changing in order to improve itself, it will have different values than one that just
wants to reinforce old customs. They would be setting higher goals for themselves to achieve but
the society that is just aiming to keep up with its customs would just keep using the same customs
and values repeatedly. This applies to what Dewey says later in his essay. He wrote that a
democratic society would be more interested than other communities in having cause to be in
deliberate and systematic education. He also

Extra lives: Why Video Games Matter Tom Bissell s, a teacher at Portland State University,
main idea was to indicate to his audience why video games matter to him by using various
argumentative appeals. One must ask themselves, can this author be worthy of respect? Can he
give his readers enough facts to get his argument across? Will he try to give us a soft story to buy
his way into in his argument? Throughout most of Bissell s book, he uses the logical appeal by
describing, in great detail, Fallout 3. Sadly he lacks the Emotional appeal to complete this
argument and he loses my credibility throughout the article. In Bissell s argument, he cites Fallout 3
was going to be fucking awesome (354). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows the wide verity of this game which adds more to the reason why this game is
magnificent. You might ask how this information applies to his thesis: Why video games
matter? All of this information provides logical facts that interest gamers around the world. The
game provides a traditional narrative that allows for an experience framed in terms of
wandering and lonesomeness, a purpose that is needed. Bissell makes the main point that video
games, mostly role playing games, gave him something with which to fulfill his days other than
self hatred. He states It was an extra life; I am grateful to have had it (352). Fallout 3 provides
long lasting entertainment that can be uplifting from a stressful day, it brings you a whole new
world to live in so that you can get away from reality and become someone admirable, a leader, or
even pure evil. With that said, his readers can relate to his situation. Many people in the world
wish they could start a new life or be someone they could never be before. This game offers just
that which Bissell describes. At the end of his article, He asks How is it, finally, that I keep
returning to a form of entertainment that I find so uniquely frustrating? To what part of me do
games speak, and on which frequency (361)? By reading this article, it gives you the answer to
these questions. The game can

Managing Acute Pain On Patients, Along With Post Operative...
Introduction
Managing acute pain in patients, along with post operative recovery pain, is an essential part of
nursing. Because it can affect each and every part of the human body, managing pain is important
for the health and safety of patients. Effective pain management can increase patient satisfaction
and overall well being, fulfilling the role of a nurse. A nurse must be able to look at ways to
manage patients pain, the ethical aspects of managing pain, along with how to educate patients on
the matter.
Patient Centered Care in Pain Management As a nurse, establishing a care plan that is
individualized to a specific patient has the potential to increase positive psychosocial and physical
patient outcomes. Plans may contain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only is visually assessing a patient s pain important, but so is having nurse patient
interaction. This includes asking open ended questions and listening to what patients have to say.
It is important not to rush the patient when they are answering so that they can answer to the
best of their ability. Accepting the answers patients give to questions asked means also trusting
their answers. This will give them a sense of safety and security (Baath, Wilde Larsson, Idvall,
Hall Lord, 2012). Patient controlled analgesia (PCA) is an option for helping manage pain in
patients. By turning on the dosing button of an infusion pump, patients can self administer
appropriate doses of an analgesic within a certain time frame. Using the PCA pump allows the
patient to treat their pain in a safe way without allowing the patient to overdose on the analgesia.
Understanding the cause and effect relationship between pain, analgesic administration, and relief
is essential in order for a patient to be a candidate to receive PCA therapy (Cooney et al., 2013).
Authorized agent controlled analgesia (AACA) has the same effects as PCA for those patients
who are not eligible to independently use PCA. An authorized individual activates the dose button
for the patient when there is a pain response (Cooney et al., 2013). Local anesthetics can be used
for pain management during a dermal procedure. These can be either injected or applied

Minstrel Shows and Theater
The 19th century was a time period full of disagreements and wishful thinking. During this time,
African Americans were trying to become free from slavery. This led to a Civil War. The 1800 s
were a hard time for African Americans, after the Civil War many expressed their thoughts and
feelings through plays like Minstrel Shows and other forms of theatre. During this time period,
America was in the middle of its Industrial Revolution. It was the beginning of the growth of the
infrastructure for factories and distribution of goods (Gunning 1). I believe that the business men
in the 1800 s really set up the base of how America runs today. Also invented in the 1800 s, were
many important things for the theatre. The film projector was made in 1820 by John Ayton Paris
(Gunning 2). In technology, optical illusions were in high demand (Gunning 11). These
physiological toys were designed to mess with people s minds and manipulate their perception
(Gunning 9). The technological advances of the 19th centuryplayed a big role in theatre. Since
America was having an Industrial Revolution, many people from the country moved to the
expanding cities in the east ( Nineteenth Century Theatre ). This migration made the growth of
theatres possible. Theatre seats, balconies, and the basic structural support were made of wood (
Nineteenth Century Theatre ). During the 19th century, theatre lights were upgraded three times,
the theatre went from candle lighting, to gas lighting,

Unexplained Fertility Research Paper
Coping with Unexplained Fertility
If you and your partner have trouble conceiving for six months to a year, you might think you have
a fertility problem. Your next step is to go to a clinic and get tested for infertility symptoms. If
these tests result in no answers, you are diagnosed with unexplained infertility.
According to the Center for Human Reproduction, around 30% of women diagnosed with infertility
are thought to have unexplained infertility. The CHS believe this is a misleading faux diagnosis
that actually impedes patients from receiving appropriate infertility treatments. You and your
partner may conceive if you try more treatments, but it might take an emotional toll.
Unexplained Fertility and your Emotions When you and your partner try to conceive and continue
to be unsuccessful, it can make each month more emotionally taxing. The National Infertility
Association, Resolve, explains why you might not be able to move on. You may feel stuck unable
to grieve and get on with other options because you hang on to those slender threads of hope that
the cause of your infertility will be revealed in the next test or treatment. Adding to the heartbreak,
you may have a difficult time sharing your feelings about the ... Show more content on

As the treatments continue, you may become increasingly depressed. Reaching out to a support
group and talking to people who are facing the same issues can help. A support group can help
couples realize that they are not alone in dealing with this progression. If there is no support group
available, a couple can also talk to a

Racial Controversy Surrounding the Assassination of...
The Racial Controversy Surrounding the Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. The impact of
Martin Luther King, Jr. today is no doubt revered. He is commonly called the Father of Civil
Rights, and is looked upon as a national icon, in an almost presidential type light. His
achievements have not only begat a national holiday for his birthday, but also helped lead to the
creation of Black History Month. However, his accomplishments were not so regaled in his own
time. In fact, most Caucasian Americans refused to even recognize any ban or barrier he and his
cohorts attempted to change. African Americans were just simply not respected by most whites in
the 1950s and 1960s because they were considered inferior. This... Show more content on

The MIA s boycott lasted over a year, but finally, in early 1957, Montgomery s buses were
desegregated. This was, on many levels, the first large scale stand taken to end segregation in
the South. ( Martin Luther King, Jr. 1) King went on to form the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference in 1960, which gave him a base of operation and a national platform to speak. King
began to travel across the country, preaching his case for civil rights and the desegregation of
schools and public places. During his pursuit of desegregation, King and hundreds of his
followers were jailed in Birmingham, Alabama. There, from his jail cell, he penned the infamous
Letter from the Birmingham Jail, in which he says that he ll gladly negotiate the terms of
desegregation, under the condition that he stops his sit ins and marches. This was a large step
towards racial desegregation. ( Martin Luther King, Jr. 2) Soon after being released from the
Birmingham Jail, King joined other civil rights leaders in organizing the infamous March on
Washington. More than 200,000 participated in the march on August 28, 1963. After the march,
the assembly gathered in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial, and King gave his famous, I have
a dream speech, which called for someday, the equality of all mankind. This historical day rose the
tide of civil rights agitation to an all time high, and the next year resulted in the passage of the
Civil Rights Act of

  • 2. Sigmund Freud s Two Key Ideas About Religion Freud had two key ideas about religion: firstly, that it was a collective neurosis a universal mental illness that manifests itself in the form of obsessive rituals and was caused by sexual repression and guilt and secondly, that it was all part of a phenomenon that he called wish fulfilment , whereby believers would perceive God to possess all good qualities of mankind and yet none of the bad. Freud s initial opinion, namely the Oedipus Complex, is split into two parts, the first of which is that religionis due to the individual s experience of the Oedipus Complex. The Oedipus Complex, to Freud, was the idea that a human s psychological development was all based around the libido, and that this desire for sexual satisfaction would be... Mankind is aware that it has no control over the natural world, which causes a feeling of fear and helplessness. However, a supernatural God, such as the one most religions worship, would be capable of offering protection against such events, and so Freud argued that religious believers carry out ritualistic worship in order to feel as though they have some control over their God s decisions about these natural disasters. The second idea in wish fulfilment is that we need protection from our inner instincts; specifically, the sex instinct and the aggression instinct. Freud says that religions come up with religious rules such as love thy neighbour in order to extend Platonic love to everyone and so reduce the possibility of hostility. They then say that these rules are from God in order to get people to follow them. The third part of Freud s wish fulfilment argument is that we crave a father figure and an afterlife or, in other words, security. Religious believers look to God as an authority figure and believe that he will reward those who do good in this life and will punish those who do wrong. Due to the fact that most humans fear death, the afterlife has been created, in Freud s eyes, as a way of relieving the fear surrounding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ocimum gratissimum has been used extensively in traditional medicine in many countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate antioxidant status and antimicrobial activity of the methanol extract of Ocimum gratissimum (MEOG) and to establish that the antimicrobial activity is due to its antioxidant potentials. The total antioxidant status was evaluated using DPPH and ABTS assays and the Folin Ciocalteu reagent method to determine total phenolic content of the MEOG.The antimicrobial effect was determined by agar diffusion and broth dilution method against different ATCC strains of pathogenic bacteria. Zones of inhibition, minimum inhibitory (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) were determined. The results indicate that the antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity of MEOG is mainly due to its total phenolic content ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to the Meyer Briggs Type Indicator test, this is just one of the things that describe my personality. It is difficult to describe a person off of a set of algorithms. However, tests like the MBTI and the Strong Interest Inventory help pave a pathway to beginning to understand yourself. The results from both tests amplified a lot of what I already knew about myself and also offered new insights. Currently I am trying to decide between different career paths and these tests aid in making the choice. Finally, the values and interests that arise from both tests closely align with the types of jobs I want to have but also offered new jobs to consider. This class helped me understand who I am according to the tests, the career path I would like to take, and how my personality and values align with my future goals. The Strong Interest Inventory analyzed my interests and gave me the theme of Social. The test highlighted many interests that are prevalent to me. For example, it states that I enjoy people, teamwork, helping and community service. I am a theater and community major with an applied psychology minor. One of the main reasons I chose this major is because it aligns with all those aspects. • 5. Essay on An Analysis of the Jungle by Upton Sinclair In the early 1900 s life for America s new Chicago immigrant workers in the meat packing industry was explored by Upton Sinclair s novel The Jungle. Originally published in 1904 as a serial piece in the socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason, Sinclair s novel was initially found too graphic and shocking by publishing firms and therefore was not published in its complete form until 1906. In this paper, I will focus on the challenges faced by a newly immigrated worker and on what I feel Sinclair s purpose was for this novel. While not all of these examples have a direct monetary impact, each of the dealings associated with them does which in turn motivates the parties involved to make decisions and perform actions outside the normal scope for their character. The third challenge faced by new immigrants was acquiring and then keeping steady work. Although the Packingtown in Chicago was in a constant state of activity, the sheer number of available workers and the rule of supply and demand made it difficult for some to find work. It was not uncommon for some workers to stand at the plant doors for weeks before being selected. And once a person was chosen to be a worker, they had to labor at a fever pitch to make sure they were retained. That being said, the worker s problems did not end once they found steady employment. Employers were harsh and unforgiving in how they treated their employees. For example, if an employee was one minute late they were penalized an hours pay. If they were 20 minutes late they forfeited their employment. Worse yet, if they were injured or hurt on the job the company takes no responsibility and the worker is forced to recuperate on their own time without pay (i.e.; when Jurgis sprained his ankle and had to recuperate at home for 3 months). The final insult to the workers was that even if they were always on time, worked hard and maintained their health they could lose their job due to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Little did they that know that an ideal and perfect life was difficult to accomplish and it corrupted the minds of those pursuing it. The author, John Steinberg, placed a lot of emphasis on the unachievable nature of the American Dream regarding economic stability in the novel through the cross country migration of the Joads, their continuous and unpredictable changes in employment and eventually, their failure to find the success they so desired in California (Aghosh, Allentown, PA). • 10. Use Of Narrative Voice In Atonement Narrative voice and points of view are indispensable parts of storytelling. Explore the use of narrative voice employed by the authors of Atonement and A Room with a View. In the novel Atonement, the author Ian McEwan uses narrative voice to grasp the attention of the reader whilst alternating points of view to create a diverse plot. He does this through the novel being perceived as several narrators for us to then realise it s one voice. McEwan uses prolepsis to hint at future events which he uses to intrude the story. In the same way, this is also an evident theme in E.M Forster s a Room with a View. Similarly, to Atonement, A Room with a View has a thought provoking narrative viewpoint in the sense that it is a bildungsroman about Lucy Honeychurch. Forster writes in an omniscient tone, which means that the characters are dictated to us his narration and the character s dialogue; this debatably affects the reader s sympathy to the other characters in the play like Cecil Vyse. Likewise, it is evident that authorial intrusion creates a high level of authenticity to the story. In Atonement, it is evident that the author Ian McEwan is trying to highlight the characters inner mental state, he does this by using the literacy device of prolepsis. McEwan steps back from the original first person narrative to describe how Briony was struggling with the temptation to flounce from the room . He repeats this device throughout the novel, using metanarrative to build up tension. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The protests started out as just a few players taking knees during the anthem, but this past week it escalated to the majority of the NFL taking part in some sort of protest. What sparked these players to join in was a tweet by Donald Trump that read, If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL,or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem. If not, YOU RE FIRED. Find something else to do! (Trump). This tweet led most NFL players to take part in their teammates protest to join in solidarity. While many people believe that these non violent protests are effective, there is also a large number of people who believe that these protests are disrespectful to our flag and country. They want their professional athletes to stick to sports and not make it so political. James Robbins shared his opinion on these protests in an opinion piece for USA Today. He usually divided his poems into verses of four hemistiches, with the second and fourth hemistich of each verse having the same rhymes. In his poetical outlook, Tavallali was deeply influenced by the lyric poets of the past. In fact most of his poems are either expansions of the themes in single couplets of classical ghazals, or a whole ghazal with a new rhyming pattern. During the time I volunteered, I learned many things about myself and others. Also, I experienced new things that influenced me. My best experience was when I met an old man named Peter. I remember Peter as a funny and cool person. Peter was probably the best part in volunteering at St. Joseph because he was very fun to be with. He loves to sing very loudly and it s just amusing to watch. This one time, Peter beckoned me to come to him and I still remember his warm smile. He took my hand ... Dear Mr. President by Pink Essay Throughout the 2000s most mainstream music that was heard on the radio was pop, rap, and/or R B with the subject of the songs being of common thoughts nothing to make a stir about. One artist that developed during this time was Pink counteracting some notions about war, gay rights, and the general state of America with her song Dear Mr. President . I believe that Dear Mr. President should be included in MUSC2019 because this song brings together pop and folk influences while using different techniques such as repetition, metaphors and dynamics to enhance the effect of the song has on the audience. The verse addresses Bush s position on abortion and gay rights linking these issues to his wife, all of which could have an effect on her being a women herself. This verse is the peak of the song signalled by the rise in instrumentals and angry vocals. Throughout this 12 line verse hard work is repeated 9 times. Looking at the lyrics there seems to be a shift here from the main political focus we saw before to a more general message about the adversities that people in America face. The anger present dissipates quickly as the guitar slows the mood again closing the song in the same melancholy tone it began with. • 28. The Numbers And Counting System In Ancient Egypt Numbers and counting systems are used daily by everyone. Numerous civilizations throughout history like Egypt, Babylonian, Maya and Africa developed a unique number system. They were commonly used to communicate numbers in an everyday life. Since then counting has changed. A few of the earlier systems had principles that survived and helped in some way, shape or form to create our current Hindu Arabic numbering system. It has become widespread. Back in 3000 B.C, ancient Egypt was using the numbersystem to calculate areas of land, distribute money, and much more. The Egyptian counting system consisted of hieroglyphs and pictorial signs. The graphic numbers can be of a person, animal, or plant. The hieroglyphic numbers were a written form of the number system. It used a decimal base approach. For all the powers of ten, there was a unique symbol. For example, the number ten was represented as a upside down U , for the number a hundred thousand it was tadpole, for a million it was represented by a man kneeling with his arms raised. When reading or writing the number, it is written from right to left. It was written on temples, vases, and stone monuments. The Egyptians used hieroglyphic numbers to advance in architectural achievements. Math was used to make historical creations like tombs and pyramids. • 29. The Importance Of Fate In The Aeneid Is life pre ordained? In living, are we consciously making decisions that affect how our lives play out or are people simply characters preforming from a script containing the information of all of time? This concept of destiny verses human agency is a common thread through the epic poem, The Aeneid by Virgil as Aeneasis destined to found Rome, and that Rome that he founds is destined to prevail and be great. In The Aeneid, destiny is inevitable, because fate is inescapable and will come to pass in spite of interfering situations as demonstrated in the catalogues of the shield of Aeneas and the characters presented in the Underworld. Fate is unavoidable, but may not occur in the expected method as demonstrated by Palinurus in the underworld. This is reminiscent of Greek oracle prophesies of fate in which the fated future will always occur, but the path along the way is unknown to humans. Palinurus was foretold [to be] unharmed at sea, yet was amongst those who did not have a proper burial which brings the truth of the prophecy and fate into question. He had tried to escape being harmed by being a helmsman, but was still killed because it was his fate. Fate got around the obstacle of him being at sea, by being knocked overboard, [washed] close inshore in other words away from the sea, and killed by natives (Virgil 998). It important to note that it was specifically mentioned multiple times in this section that no god had interfered in this ordeal (Virgil 998). This must therefore be a work of fate that lead to his death. Fate occurs regardless of human agency as seen in the tales of Romulus and Remus and Manlius and the goose. Romulus and Remus were abandoned by their human mother and excepted to die, but they had a fate to fulfil so could not die. They ended up being cared for by a she wolf who is part of the natural fate world, not the human controlled world (Virgil 1062). This notion is continued later on the shield when Manlius, a human, was about to be ambushed whilst sleeping, but was woken up by the silver goose (Virgil 1062). The Gauls [were] swarming the thickets, about to seize the fortress, shielded by the shadows of night (Virgil 1063). They were ready. The time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The time periods that I give focus to include educationin the Spanish Mexican era (1519 1848), education and early Anglo rule in the Southwest (1836 1890), the expansion of American education (1890 1960), and education in the contemporary period (1960 present). Education in the Spanish Mexican era lasted from 1519 until 1848. During this period, education occurred in informal and formal settings and was aimed towards the Indian population, who were Spanish subjects. Education in informal settings was the general norm and the most important informal settings were missions, presidios, and civilian settlements. The purpose of educating the Indians was to substitute their identity with a Spanish one and to also teach them the acceptance of their social relegation. The way the Spanish did this was by teaching the Indians literacy, music, the Catholic faith, Spanish manners, and by repressing their indigenous religious and social beliefs (Kloosterman 2). To convince themselves that their slaves are not quite human, slave owners treat them inhumanely. Even if some slaveholders were deeply convinced that black people were white men s equal, they had to deny it or else slavery would stop. This is what Frederick Douglas called the evil of slavery in his narrative when good natured slave owners had to forget their own feelings and to behave very severely toward them for the continuation of slavery. In treating their slaves like beasts, the masters became one themselves. Then, slave owners separated young slaves from their family very early so as to avoid strong alliances among the slaves which could be a serious threat to their hold on power. On the contrary, they wanted to develop a sense of individuality and rivalry among slaves, they were trying to divide them. For example, slave owners rewarded slaves for giving information on one another. This is how they partially prevented slaves from forming organized rebellions. Ryn, in his essay The Ideology of American Empire, America has an ideology of American empire. John Dewey s ideology regarding America is that it should be a democratic society. To say that education is a social function, securing direction and development in the immature through their participation in the life of the group to which they belong, is to say in effect that education will vary with the quality of life which prevails in a group. I agree with Dewey that education is a social function because people learn in the presence of others. I also agree with him regarding variation in education. If a community lives poorly, the education in that community wouldn t be able to be very effective since its people don t have as much to offer through participation. Dewey also said that a society which not only changes but which has the ideal of such changes as will improve it, will have different standards and methods of education from one which aims simply at the perpetuation of its own customs. This makes sense because if a society is changing in order to improve itself, it will have different values than one that just wants to reinforce old customs. They would be setting higher goals for themselves to achieve but the society that is just aiming to keep up with its customs would just keep using the same customs and values repeatedly. Patient controlled analgesia (PCA) is an option for helping manage pain in patients.
