The Good Earth Book Report
The novel, The Good Earth, opens with a poor Chinese farmer named Wang Lung preparing for
his marriage day. Wang is a hard working farmer who lives with his aged father. On his wedding
day, he is given a wife, a slave from the Great House of Hwang, which was the wealthy and noble
people of the area. With his new wife, O Lan, he proceeds to have a son. When O Lan goes back
to the House of Hwang to show her old lords her newborn, she comes back to Wang Lung with
interesting news. She tells him about the broken infrastructure of the House of Hwang, due to the
opium usage of all the nobles, and all the money being spent freely by the nobles. Because of the
monetary troubles, the Old Lord, the Lord of the House of Hwang, was selling his vast lands...

Almost right after the birth of Wang s second son, O Lan is pregnant again, but this time, with a
girl. During this time, Wang Lung s uncle is in need of money to support his family. His uncle
blackmails him into giving him the silver, otherwise the name of his family will be disgraced. A
while after this incident, a great famine rises throughout Wang Lung s area. The other citizens
are starving, and Wang Lung s uncle begins to spread lies about Wang Lung and his family.
These lies bring the hungry citizens into Wang Lung s house and they begin to cause trouble,
but the understanding voice of O Lan calms them down. Wang Lung decides to head south, since
the famine has destroyed his land and his home. Down south, the family finds that they each get
a bowl of rice every morning, but they have to beg for their pay. Wang decides that he cannot beg
and he takes the job of a ricksha driver. During one of these days, he sees army men pull poor
men off the streets, and there is soon talk of war and rebellion. One night, the poor citizens are
seen going through the nobles houses, and Wang comes across a noble trying to flee. He gets the
noble to give him gold, and spares his

Brian Barry Equality Of Opportunity Summary
In the Equality of Opportunity section, Brian Barry gives a comprehensive account of what this
concept means and ways our societal institutions fall short. Defining equality of opportunity as
having the same means as others to obtain something through an action within your power, he
explores its implications in the fields of educationand health. Although I thought disparities in these
fields were caused by material inequality people with more wealth get higher quality goods Barry
shows that inequality has deeper roots in socioeconomic factors. Through discussion about how
education and health perpetuate inequality, Barry presents ways in which the structure of society

Tracing the life of a child, he shows how an initial slow start can cause the child to lag further
behind as time goes on. What struck me the most about this was how early children s life courses
are set even before birth. Barry lists poor nutrition during pregnancy, lack of paid parental leave,
and low quality medical care in childbirth as factors that can permanently impact the child s future
learning abilities. And when students carry their environmental disadvantages into schools, Barry
ways schools become places where these hindrances are compounded and not corrected for. These
early life experiences often disqualify students from even reaching college and getting a degree,
which is becoming necessary for obtain a well paying job. In this way, education seems to become

inequality compounds in schools challenges how I think about the role schools play in society as
educational institutions. By looking at how disadvantages and advantages accumulate through the
course of schooling, I can better understand how schools contribute to wider social

Effects Of Matrix Stiffness On Primary Pancreatic Cancer...
3. Results (620 current730)
3.1 Softer substrate regulates proliferation of primary pancreatic cancer cells
To study the effects of matrix stiffness on primary pancreatic cell proliferation, we first
developed a 2D hydrogel system with stiffness (SSM) that mimic those of healthy pancreatic
tissue and cancerous pancreas previously characterized. Briefly, the cancerous pancreatic tissue
had a larger range of SSM (2kPa 30kPa) and a higher average SSM than normal tissue (0.8 4 kPa).
Consequently, to account for the variability of stiffness on cancerous tissue, our model included
two groups of PA hydrogels with Acrylamide:Bisacrylamide (Ac:Bis) ratios of: (1) 6%:0.075% and
(2) 10%:0.075% 25kPa yielding an average SSM of 8kPa and 25kPa ... Show more content on

We examined the viability of the cells in response to the chemotherapeutic as a function of the
matrix stiffness (Figure 2C). We observed that as the cells underwent apoptosis they detached from
the substrates. Consequently, we collected the media before (Day 7) and after (Day 10) the
chemotherapy to quantify the number of cells in suspension. As depicted on Figure 2C, the PC
cells cultured on softer substrates experience larger increase in dead cells resulting from the
chemotherapy compared to the PC cells growing on stiffer substrates. As Figure 2A shows, both
Gemcitabine concentrations lead to a change in cell morphology and a higher decrease in cell area
on the softer PC tumors (3kPa and 8kPa) compared to the stiffer PC tumors (25kPa and control
group).
To further explore the effect of matrix stiffness on the response of PC cells to chemotherapy, we
used enzymatic activity as a metric of cell proliferation. We perform alamarBlueВ® assay before
adding the Gemcitabine treatment and after 72hrs of treatment. As depicted in Figure 2B, there
is a dramatic (x x for 2um and xx for 5uM) decrease of the enzymatic activity of the PC cells
growing on softer substrates in response to the chemotherapy. On the other hand, the PC cells
growing on stiffer matrices shows no decrease of enzymatic activity when treated with 2 ВµM of
Gemcitabine and a xx when treated with 5ВµM of

Analysis of Relationship Between Modes of Production and...
Analysis of Relationship Between Modes of Production and Gender Inequality
Amongst societies, there is a great variety of means of survival, all of which are dependent upon
factors influencing the community geographical location and structure of authority, to name a few.
Such factors and the community s ways of survival create the underlying basis of other complex
issues, including the relationship between the sexes. Many anthropological papers that concentrate
on the modes of production of specific groups of people have shown a connection between the
modes of production and the presence or absence of gender inequality. Futhermore, there is also
evidence of a further causality between the two: as a society adopts a more complex mode of ...

Not only are the Agta women considered as significant providers of daily sustenance for their
respective families, they also have much influence in decision making within both their family and
the general community. The Agta people show equality within genders through their means of
sustenance foraging. According to Estioko Griffin and Griffin, the Agta women have evidently
shown much participation equal to the men when dealing with hunting and gathering food
resources. However, it has also been stated that there is a slight presence of sexual division of
labor. For example, when hunting, most women do not directly hunt by bows and arrows, traps, or
machetes, depending on the geographical region in which they live. What most do instead is that
they assist the men during the hunt (Estioko Griffin Griffin 2012: 125). Nevertheless, their
involvement in the hunting is quite significant. The Agta women help carry game or wild animals
back home, which is no small feat, since such game consists of hefty pigs and deer. In regions
such as the Malibu River, there are women who are deemed as proficient in hunting with bows and
arrows (Estioko Griffin Griffin 2012: 126). Another means of obtaining food is through fishing, an
activity equally performed by both genders. The only selectivity exhibited is when a woman is either
pregnant or physically older; however, such

The Monsanto Case Analysis
The objective of this report is to analyze the differences in Monsanto s experiences in the United
States and Europe and the reasons of opposition in Europe, despite that, why Monsanto pushed
ahead so hard.
Monsanto is a leading biotechnology company, which an American based company. The company
had received import approval of some products before concerns were elevated. They responded by
launching an advertising campaign to discuss the potential benefits of biotechnology. Monsanto was
trying to impose America s food and production systems on the European life. Cultural differences

Europe, forming collaborative efforts to link and coordinate their activities.
2. The reasons of opposition in Europe
Despite the legality GM foods introduction to Europe, there were many points of resistance by
European citizens, consumers, and activists. Monsanto was not prepared for the negative response
by environmental protection groups.
в‘ European culture differ from U.S culture
European cultures placed great confidence in knowledge learned through historical experience.
Even food practices that were questionable by today s standards were accepted in Europe of they
had been going in for centuries without major incident. Factions of the European public opposed
the introduction of GM foods technology, and the majority of European citizens believed more
caution was in order. Despite public trepidation, Monsanto continued to stand by its genetic
engineering program and planned to push ahead with the introduction of GM foods to the European
market. This position was motivated in part by the success of the products in the United States.

Character Analysis Of Vincente Minnelli s Father Of The...
That Vincente Minnelli made a comedy about the artificial nature of weddings is hardly
surprising. In fact, it s a hilariously obvious choice for Minnelli, a director who made a career out
of blending emotions with spectacle and creating characters who strive for beauty. At its core,
Father of the Bride is a comedy; that means the number one goal is to make the audience laugh. Of
course, it has all the Minnelli traits you d expect: beautiful sets, precise compositions, fluid camera
movement, and a focus on character emotionthat permeates the frame. But this is all in service of
the comedy, and the comedy completely aligns with Minnelli s sensibilities. In Stanley T. Banks,
Minnelli creates a character who initially believed weddings were all about love. But he quickly
learns, much to his chagrin, that they re really just a source of endless chaos and bills. As the
film progresses, the preparations become more chaotic and expensive and Stanley becomes
increasingly befuddled and lost. It s hysterical. In Minnelli s musicals and melodramas, a wedding
might be a momentous occasion, full of grandeur and emotion. Here, though, it s a total pain in the
ass. Stanley gets so lost in the proceedings that he can t ever take a step back and think about his
daughter s next chapter. A comedy about a beautiful spectacle consuming a father s life? Now that
sounds like Minnelli.
Father of the Bride opens with a track and pan over a catastrophic (and beautifully designed) mess.

Moby Dick Vs Scarlet Letter Essay
Both novels, Moby Dick and The Scarlet Letter, are interesting books to be read. The novel, The
Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is about Hester Prynne wearing the scarlet A to remind her
about her affair. Hester does not announce Arthur Dimmesdale, the preacher of the town, as the
father of her daughter. So while Arthur is full of guilt, Hester s husband, Roger Chillingworth,
seeks revenge. Another American gothic novel, Moby Dick by Herman Melville, is about a young
boy, Ishmael, who goes whaling for the first time. But for this voyage Captain Ahab urge his men
to find Moby Dick, the big white whale, for revenge after he consumes his leg. Likewise Roger
Chillingworth and Captain Ahab are both evil characters with many similarities.
As said before, evil takes over Chillingworth causing him to not think thoroughly. For example,
when he decides to get revenge on Dimmesdale. But the only reason Chillingworth decides to do it
himself is because Dimmesdale never faced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example when Ahab decides to get revenge against the big white whale, Moby Dick after he

knowing the sea s voyage, he will capture Moby Dick at some point. Without a doubt, Ahab s
obsession with capturing Moby Dick made him have no compassion for his crew whatsoever.
After months of chasing Moby Dick, ignoring other whales that could have been killed and used
for profit, and the danger the crew went through, they surround the great white whale.
Unfortunately, Ahab s obsession of killing Moby Dick fails. In fact, it kills his whole crew except
Ishmael. In conclusion, both evil characters Roger Chillingworth in The Scarlet Letter and Captain
Ahab in Moby Dick, have things in common. They both seek vengeance, use their speciality for the

Cinderella Comparison
Emily Martin
Mrs. Rogers
W131 Period 1

Comparative Analysis of Cinderella All people recognize the charming story of Cinderella, and at
its core, it is a story that relates to the hearts of all societies worldwide. The magic that transforms
an underprivileged girl into an affluent beauty captures the attention of a prince, but outside of the
story, it also mesmerizes readers in their pursuit of their own happily ever afters. In America s
Cinderella , Jane Yolen expounds upon the true nature of Cinderella that is hidden from modern,
American society but lives in the tales of other cultures. She criticizes the modern, mass
marketed version of Cinderella that is leading society to a false hope in America. Also, an art
historian, Bonnie Cullen, writes about the Cinderella tale. In The Rise of Perrault s Cinderella ,
Cullen investigates how Charles Perrault s version of Cinderella grew to its fame and how the
story was affected by the Victorian Era. Both authors see the Cinderella story in diverse colors;
however despite all controversies, the enchanting tale of Cinderella continues to thrive in modern
society. As an example, Ever After, directed by Andy Tennant, came to theaters and restored the
obsession with Cinderella. In the movie, the Cinderella story is given a transformation: fresh
colors, heroic protagonists, deceitful enemies, and glitzy clothing. However, the story maintains the
Cinderella plot. Like most Cinderella stories, Danielle, the main character, is forced into servitude
by the hands of an evil stepmother after the passing of Cinderella s beloved father, but her life
changes when she meets Prince Charming. While audiences can see that Ever After parallels
Perrault s version of Cinderella and contains the necessary ingredients for the traditional story, the
main character, Danielle, exhibits new, contemporary attributes that alter the personality of a
standard Cinderella figure, but ultimately, Danielle still falls victim to Victorian ideology.
Following Perrault s guidelines for Cinderella, Ever After shapes itself around this traditional
influence. A fairy godmother takes shape in the creative, wise Leonardo da Vinci. Mice from
Perrault s version are converted into

Summary Of The MovieThe Martian 2014
The Martian 2015 is a very entertaining science fiction film which is accredited for its scientific
accuracy. However, some artistic liberties were taken to make the movie easier to make and
progress the plot. This paper will cover both accurate and inaccurate areas of space science
featured in the film. The portrayal of Mark Watney s separation, habitation of mars, and recovery
will all be analyzed. The way Mark gets separated from the crew is an area of inaccuracy. There
are storms on mars, but the strength of them would be much less significant. Mars has no
atmosphere so the winds would not be able to knock over the ship [1]. Though the storms may
be dangerous to humans due to flying debris, such a large ship would not be so affected. The
debris would not be as dangerous as shown. Even the strongest winds, up to 60 mph, on mars
would have trouble keeping the astronauts from moving around, and would have a tough time
picking up anything even remotely tied down [1]. The chance of debris knocking someone back
and impaling them like what happened to Mark Watney would be very unlikely. The way
habitation of Mars is portrayed is a mixed bag of accuracy. The gravity on Mars is 30% that of the
earth, yet Watney moves around like any earthling [2]. This makes the movie easier to film, and if
they had attempted to portray the gravity accurately, there would have been inaccuracies anyway.
Radiation seems to be ignored almost completely besides for the device he uses to heat his rover.
Being on mars for extended periods of time would increase the chances of cancer. NASA only
allows 200 rem per year [4], which Watney would almost certainly exceed being on a planet with
no atmosphere to protect from the Sun s radiation. This was probably left out as it would likely
not have immediate effects on Watney but it s still a big concern for real astronauts.
Communication was portrayed fairly accurately. The movie says the communication speed is 30
minutes there and back. Since mars is 54.6 million miles away, data traveling at the speed of light
would take 3 minutes to get there [2]. Once data processing, inaccuracy, and other factors are
accounted for, 30 minutes is realistic.

Comfort Women During World War II
Comfort Women Being a comfort woman during World War II was dehumanizing, involuntary and
unforgivable. Wherever Japanese troops were stationed comfort women were causing many
controversies with other countries. Many of these women are still alive and have recently begun to
speak about their experiences. Comfort womenwere Asian women forced to serve as sexual slaves
for Japan s Imperial Army soldiers in brothels (Hirata 131), is the most common way to explain
comfort women. The recruitment of these women was often sneaky or forced. Women from
Taiwan and Korea, colonies of Japan at the time, were recruited for work misinterpreting the
comfort services as visiting wounded soldiers. Also in these colonies young women were... Show

Since sexual behavior is not usually spoken about in Japan s culture the practice of comfort
women was ignored for forty five years. In 1948 the Netherlands was the first place anyone
became concerned and tried to punish the soldiers. Some Japanese officers were convicted of
forcing thirty five Dutch women into comfort stations but there were not any trials where the native
women were plaintiffs. In 1990 the Korean Council for Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery
was created and went to trial in Japan. Shortly after, individual women filed lawsuits and wanted
an apology and compensation but Japan refused, and still does today. Eventually in 1992 a
discovery of documents in the archives of Japan s National Defense Agency forced Japan s
government to admit they were directly involved in the use of comfort women as sex slaves. In
1995 the Japanese government had admitted moral responsibility and set up the Asia Women s

compensation and an informal signed apology from the prime minister but it was rejected by the

Overview of International Trade Flows The European Union is a major player when it comes to
international trade. Accounting for 16.5% of the world s imports and exports, the EU is founded
on principles of free trade and fair trade. The organization negotiates agreements around the world
in hopes of creating growth and jobs for Europeans. Furthermore, through trade policy, the EU
aims to reduce child labor, forced labor, and environmental destruction which can contribute to
price volatility. Every day, the countries of the EU export hundreds of millions of goods and

faces challenges once Britain officially exits the European Union. With the loss of support from
Britain, Germany will be expected to contribute more, which ultimately puts more of an economic
strain on the country. This will force the country to reevaluate the current economic structure and
possibly lead to the redistribution of funds. Germany already makes the largest net contribution to
the EU each year with more than 15 billion in funds. Once Britain leaves the EU this net
contribution is expected to need to increase to 20 billion in funds. Germany s success is
additionally seen in other measures such as life expectancy, education, healthcare, and immigration.
Germany s population sports high longevity and a well educated workforce. Germany continually
receives record numbers of immigrants which is often an indicator of a strong economic market and
a successful country. Germany appears well positioned to handle future economic changes and
thrive.

Introduction
The Trojan War and its characters are detailed in the writings of Homer, Vergil, Dante and many
others. It is a fantastical tale of a decade long siege of a powerful city by a massive pan hellenic
force. However, even though it has proved to be such a rich source of inspiration for writers, poets

Thucydides, much like Heroditus, believed that it had happened, though he does concede that
Homer had changed the story in creating his poetry.
Other authors who have drawn on the Trojan War include Plato, Vergil and Dante. Though the
Trojan War was an event from early Greek history, the Romans too wrote about it. Vergil s
unfinished Aeneid tells the story of Aeneas. Indeed, classical civilisations did not have a monopoly
on the Trojan War Ulysses (Odysseus latinised) appears alongside Diomedes (another leader of the
Achaeans who, amongst other deeds, went inside the famous Trojan Horse) in Dante s Inferno.
Because so many authors have written about the Trojan War, there are conflicting versions of
events. However, we can compare the different versions and conclude that anything that is repeated
in each of the sources actually happened. At the most basic level, we can say that the Trojan War
was a pan hellenic assault on the city of Troy, which after a protracted siege, the attackers were the
victors. (If we do not take it for granted that the Trojan War was an attack on the Trojans, then
there is very little reason for calling it the Trojan War .)
The other problems with the surviving accounts of the Trojan War are the involvement of the gods.
Supposedly Apollo and Poseidon helped build Troy as punishment. Throughout the Aeneid, the
gods aid mortals in their own particular struggles. Obviously, if the Trojan

Essay about The Role of Violence and Television
Television and Violence
One of the increasing problems in today`s society is the violence caused by watching too much
television. In 1950`s only 10% of American households had television, but today that number
reached higher levels and 99% of households own one or more. Television is most of the time
amusement and entertainment for many young people, especially children. Television itself has an
impact on everyone. Some researches show that television has good sides and that can be
entertaining and educational at the same time, where children learn more about cultures, places,
and they use their knowledge when it`s necessary. Yet we need to remember that only certain
programs are carrying positive messages which affect children ... Show more content on

Therefore, some see television as an unhealthy imposition into a child s learning process,
substituting easy pictures for the discipline of reading and concentrating and transforming the
young viewer into a hypnotized non thinker (Langone 48). Children while growing up and
spending 4 5 hours in front of television everyday will imitate aggressive acts shown on TV. The
only solution to this is to prevent it at the beginning. Parents can certainly control how much
television their children will have on daily basis. Television should not be in every room of the
house, especially children`s room, where they have the opportunity to watch shows while parents
are busy doing other stuff. Those violent acts certainly can be reduced by control which starts at the
beginning instead of waiting until everyone is helpless to improve the situation.
Perhaps one of the crucial problems is the possibility of developing the lack of social skills.
Children, while spending time at home in front of television tend to develop anti social skills,
which will affect their future and their entire life. Watching television shows, in most cases replaces
activities that children should be doing at their age. Instead of reading, learning, playing with their
friends, doing chores, having a physical activity, they sit at home. This way of antisocial activity
affects family too, because

Power Of The President And Congress
Power of the President and Congress In the United States, a knowledgeable and reliable president
should bring a country into economic development and give citizens truth. It is easy to see how a
president affects foreign policy. The President has the highest power to decide how to manage,
control, and to solve problems. The president and Congress play important roles in running the
country regarding foreign policymaking. Foreign policyis very significant because it provides peace
between countries without going to war. In order to develop the nation s economy and increase job

The president can make decisions regarding, Executive agreement or trade agreement as long as
they are beneath treaty level with senate confirmation (Welch et al. 335). Even though the
president has his own power on hand, Congress still needs to check to see whether the president
faithfully performs his bills (Welch et al. 335). As a result, the president s treaties take effect only
if they are passed by two thirds of the Senate... (Welch et al. 335). Furthermore, veto power is
another way to effect the lawmaking of the president, but the only exception is that two thirds of
each house can cancel the president veto (Welch et al. 309). However, the president is advised
that they should not abuse veto power because president who use the veto too often may appear
isolated or uncooperative or may seem to be exercising negative leadership (Welch et al. 352).
Therefore, the oversight of Congress is so important to check and control whether the President
practices making foreign policy appropriately.
Second, Congress should continue to assert its own role to oversee the president s work in
controlling budget making. Budgeting is one of the most important factors effecting national
activities. For example, the government cannot work without a budget; therefore, the Constitution
gave Congress the power to appropriate money and to account for its expenditure (Welch et al.
311). Congress also oversees the federal budget by using the budget effectively. For example, it

Achieving Fit for Corporate Social Responsibility
Achieving Fit for Corporate Social Responsibility Evaluating the measure of corporate social
responsibility (CSR) is as much an attempt to ascertain ethical conduct of interactions with
stakeholders, as it is a management tool of to limit liability. A research summary of Corporate
Responsibility Best Practices, notes that 72% of NYSE Euronext traded firms surveyed have a
formal corporate responsibility programs in place (Corporate Responsibility Officer Association,
2011, p. 6). Just 20% of the surveyed firms did not view corporate responsibility as a priority,
while many firms believed that ethical corporate responsibility was ingrained throughout their
culture and functions. Realizing added value from CSR is best achieved by fitting actions with
motivations to concern both internal and external stakeholders. Ronald Hill and Karen Becker
Olsen find that CSR projects deliver benefits to firms if there is a similarity between the corporate
mission and the social initiative, perceived motivations aimed at the good, and proactive timing
(Hill Becker Olsen, 2005). Poor fitting CSR initiatives are those the public perceives as implying
that the firm bears fault and is reactive. Press releases by British Petroleum regarding their
commitment to the Gulf demonstrate both a reactive and poorly fitted motivation initiative that is
unlikely to merit praise from the community harmed (BP p.l.c., 2012). Additionally, measuring the

Symbolism Between C.S. LewisВґ The Lion, The Witch and The...
The symbolism between C.S. Lewis The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the fourth book in
The Chronicles of Narnia, and the New Testament in the Bible, particularly the account of Jesus
death is not merely coincidental because The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is, in fact, an
allegory. An allegory is a story with morals in which characters, plots and settings are used as
symbols. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis is rich with Christian symbolism
even though the allegorical nature of it is the subject of much controversy. Nonetheless, The Lion,
The Witch and The Wardrobe is an allegory. In this tale, four ordinary children find a wardrobe that
leads them into Narnia, an extraordinary land parallel to our universe... Show more content on

Mr. and Mrs. Beaver are symbolic of guardian angels since they are forever trying to help the
Pevensies by guiding them to safety and leading them through the snow. Some critics also argue
that the Beavers are a representation of Moses. The fox represents people who do not seem to
be religious but when tested are proved to be very pious and like the fox, willing to give up their
lives for the sake of their beliefs. Aslan is symbolic to Jesus, God, and the goodness of the world.
C. S. Lewis seems to have taken the form or Aslan as a lion for the Bible as well. See, the Lion of
the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed (Revelations 5:5). Lewis tells the story of the
Paschal Mystery through Aslan.
The plots and settings of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe only further prove that Narnia
is an allegory. Edmund betraying Aslan is the same as us betraying God, yet Aslan as does God,
rescues Edmund and is prepared to give his life for him. Aslan knowing he has to die to give
Edmund life makes a treaty with the White Witch to sacrifice his life over Edmund s and
naturally, the White Witch is overjoyed and readily agrees, forgetting the deep magic . Christ
was who died on the cross in payment for our sins and Aslan died for Edmund. On the way to
Calvary, Jesus remained silent, as did Aslan. It is said that Aslan could have killed them all with
one swipe of his paws and it was said that Jesus could have killed

Enzymes Essay
Enzymes
Enzymes are biological catalysts that carry out thousands of chemical reactions that occur in living
cells. They are a class of proteins that have a unique three dimensional structure that allows it to
bind with a specific substrate to facilitate a
reaction. Many biological reactions will not occur spontaneously in the cell; there is simply not
enough energy for the reaction to take place. Enzymes make these
reactions possible by lowering the reactionГ‚ s activation energy. Each cell has tens of thousands
of different enzymes that collectively allow both the break down and synthesis of molecules to
drive all cellular processes.
This investigation will explore the effect of pH ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These biological catalysts are important because they speed up the rate of the reaction they
catalyze that would otherwise be too slow to support life. Catalase is an enzyme present in the
cells of plants, animals and aerobic (oxygen requiring) bacteria. It promotes the conversion of
hydrogen peroxide, a powerful and potentially harmful oxidizing agent, to water and molecular
oxygen.
2H2O2 to 2H2O + O2
Catalase also uses hydrogen peroxide to oxidize toxins including phenols, formic acid,
formaldehyde and alcohols.
H2O2 + RH2 to 2H2O + R
Where is it found and what does it do?
Catalase is located in a cell organelle called the peroxisome. Peroxisomes in animal cells are
involved in the oxidation of fatty acids, and the synthesis of cholesterol and bile acids. Hydrogen
peroxide is a byproduct of fatty acid oxidation. White blood cells produce hydrogen peroxide to
kill bacteria. In both cases catalase prevents the hydrogen peroxide from harming the cell itself.
Peroxisomes in plant cells are involved in photorespiration (the use of oxygen and production of
carbon dioxide) and symbiotic nitrogen fixation (the breaking apart of the nitrogen molecule N2 to
reactive nitrogen atoms). Hydrogen peroxide is produced as an intermediate during these chemical

What The Bourgeoisie Essay
Title: What the bourgeoisie...produces...is its own grave diggers. Its fall and the victory of the
proletariat are equally inevitable. Consider this statement with reference to the pattern of class
struggle that Marx sees appearing under capitalism.
Through my analysis of Marx and Engel s The Communist Manifesto I have come to somewhat
agree with their view that in the end the Proletariat always come out on top. It seems to me that it
is nothing but a vicious circle . Marx comments that through our history there has always been
evidence of two classes, in other words: the rich and the poor, he makes the claim that there has
forever been the server and the served: ...we find almost everywhere a complicated arrangement of
society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marx discusses in this piece the ever changing nature of systems, from the Feudal system to the
manufacturing system to the Industrial system, The feudal system of industry...now no longer
sufficed...The manufacturing system took it s place...Thereupon, steam and machinery
revolutionised industrial production. (D.Mclellan, Marx, OUP 1977) pg 223. Therefore the middle
man was cut out, he was no longer important, the division between the powerful and powerless
grew to become much more. The place of manufacture was taken by the giant, Modern Industry, the
place of the industrial middle class, by industrial millionaires, the leaders of the whole industrial
armies, the modern bourgeois.
Marx, in my opinion alludes that the Bourgeois have ruined many of the more caring and loving
parts of our society. The family is an institution that has been present for many centuries, people
associate the family as the core of a person s development, the way a person is brought up
essentially shapes the rest of one s life, the person one become, the way one live one s life and the
way in which one s relationships develop in adult life. The bourgeoisie has torn away from the
family its sentimental veil, and has reduced the family relation to a mere money relation.
(D.Mclellan, Marx, OUP 1977) pg 224. I disagree with this statement, of course I grasp that money
is extremely important

Wealth Argument Analysis
A middle class citizen sits in a courtroom while a wealthy citizen sits in a different courtroom.
Same charge, different outcome. The wealth gives the first class citizen a very unfair advantage
within the judicial system. First, he can hire lawyers that know how to find any and every
loophole in the system to get their client off with little to no charges. Even if the charge is as
drastic as manslaughter. This happens everyday all over the country as wealthbails people out of
consequences.

Emotional Labor Among Paralegals By Jennifer Piere
Emotional Labor among Paralegals by Jennifer Pierce is centered around the phrase emotional
labor. After reading the article the reader discovers that the phrase emotional labor refers to
when an employee has to push their feelings aside in order to please or influence their boss or
clients. Emotional labor also consists of two components which are difference and caretaking.
According to Goffman, (as cited by Pierce) deference is a type of ceremonial activity which
functions as symbolic means by which appreciation is regularly conveyed to the recipient (129).
Nevertheless, care taking is when the paralegal attends to the attorneys needs and assumes a mother
role by being pleasant and giving reassurance. Emotional labor is conducted by both female and

Male paralegals are allowed to be neutral or polite which results in them putting a lid on their
emotions. For instance, Peirce mentions a paralegal named Bill who was always tactful,
courteous, and considerate of other people s feelings but never overly solicitous (135). This
means that even though Bill cared about other people s feelings he would never actually be
interested in them. On the other hand, female paralegals are expected to be actively involved. For
example, Peirce mentions a paralegal named Lisa who was warm, friendly, and outgoing... was
always cheerful. She tried to please people by remembering their birthdays and cheering them up
when they were down (135). This line shows that unlike Bill, Lisa was actually interested in other
people s feelings and tries to please other people. Furthermore. Male paralegals distance themselves
by using criticism and contempt. To illustrate, this Peirce mentions a paralegal named Tony who

Narcissism In Shakespeare s Othello
William Shakespeare once said, A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself
to be a fool. This idea can be easily applied to his play Othello. In this book Shakespeare writes of
an individual, Iago, who thinks himself to be wise in his plan to get back at his superior, Othello,
who kept a job opportunity from him. Iago schemes and plans not thinking about anyone else but
himself and his goal to get himself promoted. Iago thinks he is smarter than everyone else and
does not care about the consequences of his actions. Throughout the book, the reader learns that
Iago has a grand sense of self, needs admiration while taking much pride in his accomplishments,
and lacks empathy for the characters whose lives he affects. Accordingly, Iago considers himself a
wise man, but the reader realizes hs is, in fact, a fool.
Furthermore, The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders characterizes narcissism as
a personality disorder under Cluster B of Personality Disorders. There are nine criteria
characterizing narcissism, but in order to have a diagnosis of narcissism one must meet five of the
nine criteria. The essential factor of a narcissistic personality disorder is a pattern of grandiosity
(DSM 670), which means that the individual amplifies their achievements (DSM 669). According
to the manual, narcissists also overestimate their abilities and inflate their accomplishments and
often appear boastful and pretentious (DSM 670). In addition,

American Musician, Prince
Prince, also known as Jamie Starr, Alexander Nevermind, The Purple One and Joey Coco, among
others, is an American musician whose career has spanned over three decades from the 1970s. His
ever changing, androgynous style and the innovative and creative approach with which he takes on
musical ventures have helped in him selling millions of albums worldwide and still allows him to
have his stake in the rock, funkand R B genres today.
Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, was born in the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 7th
1958. He was born into a musical family as his parents Mattie Shaw and John L. Nelson were
both musicians. Prince was named after the Prince Roger Trio which was led by his jazz pianist
father, John, and often featured his mother, Mattie, as a jazz singer (GUINESS, 1989). Prince s
father encouraged him and his younger sister, Tika, to take an interest in music from a young age,
which led to Prince teaching himself how to play the piano and writing his first composition at the
age of seven.
As a child, Prince was often bullied in school and became a recluse. As a result, he turned to
music as a source of refuge and started writing some of his own music but he never considered
music as a career until he saw James Brown live for the first time when he was 10 years old

the abandonment by his father and the disturbing death of his mother, both prominent

The parallelism of Poe s own personal
problems with those of the narrator in The Raven, and the repetitive verse by the raven,
makes the reader aware of Poe s prominent tone of melancholy. A strong device for the
melancholic tone is Poe s life experiences. The narrator s sorrow for the lost Lenore is
paralleled with Poe s own grief regarding the death of his wife. Confined in the chamber
are memories of her who had frequented it. These ghostly recollections bring out a state
of eager anticipation in the reader to know and be relieved of the bewilderment that the
narrator and consequently Poe himself are experiencing; the narrator ponders whether he
will see his wife in the afterlife.
After Virginnia s lingering death, Poe tried to relieve his grief by drinking. A
parallelism is formed in The Raven between the condescending actions of the raven
towards the narrator and the taunting of alcohol towards Poe. The raven condescends that
Poe will never see his lost love again when uttering, forget this lost Lenore, in line 84.
Alcohol taunts Poe into ceaseless depression and caused him to have a life long problem
with alcoholism, which eventually led to his death. In a similar manner to which

Argical Analysis Of Socrates
Socrates begins his apology by asking for forgives as he is not a professional sophist, and
presenting himself as a foreigner to the courts. Where if he was truly a foreigner, they would show
lenience (17d). He gives a defense to his speaking style as his accusers have pictured him as a
skilled speaker. He explains, I am not a clever speaker at all unless indeed they call a clever speaker
on who speaks the truth (17b). Socratescontinues to paint himself as a common person by
showing he is an elderly man being attacked by the youth of Athens. This is quite cleaver of
Socrates to not only put himself as a defenseless man but also showed his accusers as the ones
who are lying. His main defense is I don t know, this is Socrates ignorance and he will argue this
(Dr. Key).
He begins to address the two charges brought against him, by addressing the older accusers that
he cannot cross examine first because this is not the first time he has been accused of these
things. He is accused of not believing in the gods and teaches more on a physical reason. He
brings to the jury s attention of a play by Aristophanes, that had a Socrates character that, swings
around, claims to be walking on air, and talks a lot of other nonsense on subjects of which I have
no understanding, great or small (19c). He then addresses the accusations that he charges a fee to
educate people (19e). Socrates was showing that he is not an expert in these things, and was trying
to who that these are qualities of his accusers and not him. He explains to the jury that it was this
question of wisdom, and whether he was the wisest person in Athens, that he began questioning the
wisdom of his fellow Athenian (21a b). He points to this as to where it all started for him.
After bringing the attention to his old accusers, he turns to the accounts at hand. He questions his
accuser Meletus, first with the accusations that he is corrupting the youth of Athens. Socrates Asks
him if he is a bad influence then, who is the good influence, and Meletus answers, The laws (24b).
He continues to question about this answer and finds that all adults in Athens help shape the youth
on what is good, except Socrates (25a). He goes on to give an example with a

Unbroken Short Story
WWII will remain as one of the most tragic wars of all time. With an astounding death toll of
over 60 million people 3% of the world s population in 1940. In the books Unbroken by Laura
Hillenbrand, and Night by Elie Wiesel the horrors of WWII are told in detail about the main
characters near death experiences. Hope is a defining factor throughout the journeys of main
characters Louie and Eliezer. The theme of hope in the face of adversity is a theme common to
both stories. No matter how dire the situation may seem, there is always hope to be found.
In Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, there is much to say about the ordeal and odyssey about Louie
the main character. Louie was an Olympic runner who was brutalized as a prisoner of war in Japan
and was stranded on a raft for 47 days. There is no way he should have survived the horrific
times he had endured, but he did. There were plenty of trials and tribulations that could have
made Louie give up, but the worst was being stranded on a raft only to be found by the Japanese
and thrown into a POW camp. During these times Louie was sick, starving, and being tortured by
a sadistic guard they called the Bird. With small acts of defiance, he was able to preserve his
dignity and persevere to make it through, even though every time he passed one obstacle, he felt
there were thousands more. Laura Hillenbrand then states The same attributes that had made

The Benefits And Uses Of Social Media In Education
Social media is the most ordinally used medium to connect with the world because of its many
advantages and benefits. Lots of students are already involved in social networks. Social media
have changed the ways of learning and providing pieces of information on education. It has been
used in education nowadays more than ever and showing beneficial results out of that. Uses of
social media are increasing continuously in education and both students and educators are
becoming dependent on it. The reason behind is its simple access, uses, and good availability.
Among many of the advantages of social media in education, applying it for communication
purposes, sharing class materials, files etc. for classroom projects as well as uses of QR codes are
some leading ones.
Defining social media is a tricky task to do because of its constant change (Tess, 2013). Social
media involves a vast range of pc and mobile platforms which continue to develop constantly,
launched and re launched, abandoned also ignored daily in countries all over the world that
consist of various forms of communication (Ober Wildman,2013). Although Facebook is dominant
face of social media (Tess, 2013) and twitter is popular microblogging website (Tess, 2013),
however in recent times, various social networking sites, blogs, wikis, multimedia platforms,
virtual game worlds, and virtual social applications are added as social media (Barnes Lescault,

World Change Wednesday
This year in my Sports and Entertainment Marketing class, my teacher has given my class an

example of innovation can be found in the college. During the old days, the lecturers normally

transfer the teaching material from the transparency into power point presentation and start using

the computer lab and most of the classroom. Smart Board are the more advanced version of LCD

exhibition are outside the boundaries of traditional painting or sculpture. They contain elements of
the spiritual, the artistic, and the utilitarian that define African art. Reflecting on his work, White
states, Like most human beings I am curious about my ancestors; as a black American, I can know
only that they came from Africa. Art gives me the power to explore the lives of those ancestors and
expose audiences, minority and mainstream, to my discoveries.

While serving in the Air Force, White was both stimulated and inspired by the cultures he was
exposed to during his world travels. White s global experience manifests in much of his art, with
paintings, that are a mixture of various media that construct abstracted visual landscapes.
White began his more than forty year career in art as an art and education major at Morgan State
University in Baltimore and later continued with graduate studies in Museum Arts at Syracuse
University in Upstate New

Deception In Much Ado And Sir Gawain
Can Deception Be Good? A Look at Deception and Trickery in Much Ado and Sir Gawain
Perception is important in Shakespeare s Much Ado about Nothing as well as in Sir Gawain and
the Green Knight. Although the writers come from different time periods, they share ideas on
the concept of deception. Shakespeare was writing to audiences who lived in the Elizabethan
time where nobility and social classes were important. In fact, During Shakespeare s time there
were only about 55 noble families in England (Elizabethan). Appearances were important to his
audiences in social society. During the Gawain poet s time period of Arthurian Romances and
stories of chivalry, appearances were equally important in society. The concept of deception has
been around since Adam and Eve, and in most instances, it is seen as negative and often harmful.
Both authors produce characters who have problems perceiving reality from appearances and in
many instances are deceived by appearances. Shakespeare and the Gawain Poet both use trickery
and deception as a plot device to create conflict in both works and promote the theme of
appearance versus reality. Uniquely, both authors use deception to better the main characters by
the end of the works and at the same time, the deception allows the reader to consider moral
choices. One way to make the audience or the reader question perception is to create a visual
deception. Shakespeare and the Gawain poet use disguise to create visual deceptions in

Essay about Xmen Movie
Xmen movie I am critiquing the movie X men . This movie is based on a comic book and on an
animated series. Both the animated series and the comic book revolve around mutants. These
mutants often look human, however many look quite different than any normal human and also
their powers are quite extraordinary. This creates one problem when converting to movie form.
Make up gadgets and special effectsmust be used so that our reality where the film is made may
accurately reflect the reality where the film is set. Also, the characters from the animated seriesand
the comic books all have personalities and physical features that the actorsin the film must try to
match. This is a difficult thing to do. Not only must the actors... Show more content on

Speaking of Wolverine, his claws had a bit of a metamorphosis from the original sources. They
were much bigger and thicker. This detracted slightly from the idea of the original sources. The
claws appeared much more unwieldy however this did not seem to impair wolverine s use of
them. And so it did work out well. The claws also brought up the question of how they fit into
wolverine s hand, being so much bigger. However, wolverine s healing power did seem to work
well. The mind powers of others in the movie were slightly under done. However there were a
few scenes that focused on the mind powers of various individuals. Mystique s costuming was
very well done. So were her shape changing special effects. The various effects of her shape
changing were believable looking and true to form with the various sources. Magneto s powers
of magnetism were also well done. The sheer force of will and power behind Magneto was well
represented by the special effects. The toad guy was an obvious extra, however, his tongue
stretch effect was quite striking and caused the viewer to shrink back and go ugh . The rest of
the minor roles were also well supplied with effects. Kitty Pryde s phase and Iceman s flower
were well done special effect wise. The general acrobatics and fighting that went on were well
choreographed. Many of the maneuvers were a little super human, however, that is to be expected
because of the nature of the film. There was a small amount of special effects used

The United States Of The Usa Patriot Act
The attacks on the United States of America on September 11th, 2001 fundamentally changed the
way the government and its citizens viewed freedom and liberty. With the subsequent enactment of
the USA PATRIOT Act, security became the government s top priority. (The USA PATRIOT Act is
an acronym which stands for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools
Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism.) Congress, eager to put a law on the books to prevent
another attack, fast tracked the bill through both houses in six weeks. It passed by a near unanimous
vote, with the majority of dissent coming from Democrats. A highly contentious and debated law,
the USA PATRIOT Act infringes on Natural Law and the American citizen s Civil Liberties. Also it
violates the spirit and letter of the United States Constitution, particularly the Bill of Rights. Many
amendments in the Constitution are at a direct contrast with the law s many broadly worded
sections, specifically the First Amendment s right to free speech and freedom of assembly, and the
Fourth Amendment s guard against unwarranted and illegal search and seizure. The founders of the
United States of America understood that certain rights were inalienable and endowed by the
creator or nature itself. They established a government of laws, not for the purpose of granting
rights but rather for protecting them. Only in America did the founders recognize this and
understood if these rights were not explicitly

The Role Of Memory In John Steinbeck s The Grapes Of Wrath
Wendy seems to bare the brunt of Peter s memory loss in the novel. It is almost a surprise that
Peter has not forgotten her sooner, and in the beginning of the adventure it appears that he almost
did. He constantly abandons them for adventure during their flights to Neverland and he often
forgets who they are when he returns. Wendy comments, And if he forgets them so quickly...how
can we expect that he will go on remembering us . Peter has a hard time remember people and
events, but does not seem to have a problem with navigating in and around the island. He flies
Wendy and her brothers to the island, and later directs them back to their house. Navigation is a
type of memory that Peter has retained, and he also does well remembering his most... Show more

He questions, who is Captain Hook? and I forget them after I kill them . Despite the obvious
concern with a child killing another human, what is even more concerning is that Peter kills and
then forgets about it. A Freudian psychologist might suggest that he is subconsciously blocking out
the memory, but times are past that era, instead it might just be that Peter cannot retain memory
because he has no room to grow. Peter never ages, and his playful face is the same throughout
generations. While Peter is blessed with never having to grow up, and therefore never having any
real form of responsibility, he is cursed with the inability to remember. Memories grow with the
individual, it takes place within time regardless of the duration and is encoded into the brain
likewise. The timeline in Neverland is unclear because years or seconds may pass relative to the
real world, but even if the time ratio was one to one, there is without doubt that Peter s internal
clock has stopped ticking. His past therefore can be considered infinite because no one knows if he
is twenty years old or two thousand. Infinite memory is incomprehensible, as previously stated, as
other characters grow up in Peter Pan their childhood becomes merely snapshots. Peter may not
have the ability to retain memory because he can only live in the present. For him to have memory
of the past would suggest that he

Defining equality of opportunity as having the same means as others to obtain something through an action within your power, he explores its implications in the fields of educationand health. Although I thought disparities in these fields were caused by material inequality people with more wealth get higher quality goods Barry shows that inequality has deeper roots in socioeconomic factors. What struck me the most about this was how early children s life courses are set even before birth. And when students carry their environmental disadvantages into schools, Barry ways schools become places where these hindrances are compounded and not corrected for. Results (620 current730) 3.1 Softer substrate regulates proliferation of primary pancreatic cancer cells To study the effects of matrix stiffness on primary pancreatic cell proliferation, we first developed a 2D hydrogel system with stiffness (SSM) that mimic those of healthy pancreatic tissue and cancerous pancreas previously characterized. Briefly, the cancerous pancreatic tissue had a larger range of SSM (2kPa 30kPa) and a higher average SSM than normal tissue (0.8 4 kPa). Consequently, to account for the variability of stiffness on cancerous tissue, our model included two groups of PA hydrogels with Acrylamide:Bisacrylamide (Ac:Bis) ratios of: (1) 6%:0.075% and (2) 10%:0.075% 25kPa yielding an average SSM of 8kPa and 25kPa ... We observed that as the cells underwent apoptosis they detached from the substrates. Consequently, we collected the media before (Day 7) and after (Day 10) the chemotherapy to quantify the number of cells in suspension. As depicted on Figure 2C, the PC cells cultured on softer substrates experience larger increase in dead cells resulting from the chemotherapy compared to the PC cells growing on stiffer substrates. As Figure 2A shows, both Gemcitabine concentrations lead to a change in cell morphology and a higher decrease in cell area on the softer PC tumors (3kPa and 8kPa) compared to the stiffer PC tumors (25kPa and control group). To further explore the effect of matrix stiffness on the response of PC cells to chemotherapy, we used enzymatic activity as a metric of cell proliferation. We perform alamarBlueВ® assay before adding the Gemcitabine treatment and after 72hrs of treatment. As depicted in Figure 2B, there is a dramatic (x x for 2um and xx for 5uM) decrease of the enzymatic activity of the PC cells growing on softer substrates in response to the chemotherapy. On the other hand, the PC cells growing on stiffer matrices shows no decrease of enzymatic activity when treated with 2 ВµM of Gemcitabine and a xx when treated with 5ВµM of ... Analysis of Relationship Between Modes of Production and Gender Inequality Amongst societies, there is a great variety of means of survival, all of which are dependent upon factors influencing the community geographical location and structure of authority, to name a few. Such factors and the community s ways of survival create the underlying basis of other complex issues, including the relationship between the sexes. Many anthropological papers that concentrate on the modes of production of specific groups of people have shown a connection between the modes of production and the presence or absence of gender inequality. According to Estioko Griffin and Griffin, the Agta women have evidently shown much participation equal to the men when dealing with hunting and gathering food resources. However, it has also been stated that there is a slight presence of sexual division of labor. For example, when hunting, most women do not directly hunt by bows and arrows, traps, or machetes, depending on the geographical region in which they live. What most do instead is that they assist the men during the hunt (Estioko Griffin Griffin 2012: 125). Nevertheless, their involvement in the hunting is quite significant. The Agta women help carry game or wild animals back home, which is no small feat, since such game consists of hefty pigs and deer. • 7. Character Analysis Of Vincente Minnelli s Father Of The... That Vincente Minnelli made a comedy about the artificial nature of weddings is hardly surprising. In fact, it s a hilariously obvious choice for Minnelli, a director who made a career out of blending emotions with spectacle and creating characters who strive for beauty. At its core, Father of the Bride is a comedy; that means the number one goal is to make the audience laugh. Of course, it has all the Minnelli traits you d expect: beautiful sets, precise compositions, fluid camera movement, and a focus on character emotionthat permeates the frame. But this is all in service of the comedy, and the comedy completely aligns with Minnelli s sensibilities. In Stanley T. Banks, Minnelli creates a character who initially believed weddings were all about love. But he quickly learns, much to his chagrin, that they re really just a source of endless chaos and bills. As the film progresses, the preparations become more chaotic and expensive and Stanley becomes increasingly befuddled and lost. It s hysterical. In Minnelli s musicals and melodramas, a wedding might be a momentous occasion, full of grandeur and emotion. Here, though, it s a total pain in the ass. Stanley gets so lost in the proceedings that he can t ever take a step back and think about his daughter s next chapter. A comedy about a beautiful spectacle consuming a father s life? • 9. Cinderella Comparison Emily Martin Mrs. Rogers W131 Period 1 20 November 2017 Comparative Analysis of Cinderella All people recognize the charming story of Cinderella, and at its core, it is a story that relates to the hearts of all societies worldwide. The magic that transforms an underprivileged girl into an affluent beauty captures the attention of a prince, but outside of the story, it also mesmerizes readers in their pursuit of their own happily ever afters. In America s Cinderella , Jane Yolen expounds upon the true nature of Cinderella that is hidden from modern, American society but lives in the tales of other cultures. She criticizes the modern, mass marketed version of Cinderella that is leading society to a false hope in America. Also, an art historian, Bonnie Cullen, writes about the Cinderella tale. In The Rise of Perrault s Cinderella , Cullen investigates how Charles Perrault s version of Cinderella grew to its fame and how the story was affected by the Victorian Era. Both authors see the Cinderella story in diverse colors; however despite all controversies, the enchanting tale of Cinderella continues to thrive in modern society. As an example, Ever After, directed by Andy Tennant, came to theaters and restored the obsession with Cinderella. In the movie, the Cinderella story is given a transformation: fresh colors, heroic protagonists, deceitful enemies, and glitzy clothing. However, the story maintains the Cinderella plot. Like most Cinderella stories, Danielle, the main character, is forced into servitude by the hands of an evil stepmother after the passing of Cinderella s beloved father, but her life changes when she meets Prince Charming. While audiences can see that Ever After parallels Perrault s version of Cinderella and contains the necessary ingredients for the traditional story, the main character, Danielle, exhibits new, contemporary attributes that alter the personality of a standard Cinderella figure, but ultimately, Danielle still falls victim to Victorian ideology. Following Perrault s guidelines for Cinderella, Ever After shapes itself around this traditional influence. A fairy godmother takes shape in the creative, wise Leonardo da Vinci. • 10. Summary Of The MovieThe Martian 2014 The Martian 2015 is a very entertaining science fiction film which is accredited for its scientific accuracy. However, some artistic liberties were taken to make the movie easier to make and progress the plot. This paper will cover both accurate and inaccurate areas of space science featured in the film. The portrayal of Mark Watney s separation, habitation of mars, and recovery will all be analyzed. The way Mark gets separated from the crew is an area of inaccuracy. There are storms on mars, but the strength of them would be much less significant. Mars has no atmosphere so the winds would not be able to knock over the ship [1]. Though the storms may be dangerous to humans due to flying debris, such a large ship would not be so affected. The debris would not be as dangerous as shown. Even the strongest winds, up to 60 mph, on mars would have trouble keeping the astronauts from moving around, and would have a tough time picking up anything even remotely tied down [1]. The chance of debris knocking someone back and impaling them like what happened to Mark Watney would be very unlikely. The way habitation of Mars is portrayed is a mixed bag of accuracy. The gravity on Mars is 30% that of the earth, yet Watney moves around like any earthling [2]. This makes the movie easier to film, and if they had attempted to portray the gravity accurately, there would have been inaccuracies anyway. Radiation seems to be ignored almost completely besides for the device he uses to heat his rover. Being on mars for extended periods of time would increase the chances of cancer. NASA only allows 200 rem per year [4], which Watney would almost certainly exceed being on a planet with no atmosphere to protect from the Sun s radiation. This was probably left out as it would likely not have immediate effects on Watney but it s still a big concern for real astronauts. Communication was portrayed fairly accurately. The movie says the communication speed is 30 minutes there and back. Since mars is 54.6 million miles away, data traveling at the speed of light would take 3 minutes to get there [2]. Once data processing, inaccuracy, and other factors are accounted for, 30 minutes is realistic. (54.6 x 10^6 km)(1 hour/1.079 x 10^9 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Vergil s unfinished Aeneid tells the story of Aeneas. Indeed, classical civilisations did not have a monopoly on the Trojan War Ulysses (Odysseus latinised) appears alongside Diomedes (another leader of the Achaeans who, amongst other deeds, went inside the famous Trojan Horse) in Dante s Inferno. Because so many authors have written about the Trojan War, there are conflicting versions of events. However, we can compare the different versions and conclude that anything that is repeated in each of the sources actually happened. At the most basic level, we can say that the Trojan War was a pan hellenic assault on the city of Troy, which after a protracted siege, the attackers were the victors. (If we do not take it for granted that the Trojan War was an attack on the Trojans, then there is very little reason for calling it the Trojan War .) Television is most of the time amusement and entertainment for many young people, especially children. Television itself has an impact on everyone. Children while growing up and spending 4 5 hours in front of television everyday will imitate aggressive acts shown on TV. The only solution to this is to prevent it at the beginning. Parents can certainly control how much television their children will have on daily basis. Television should not be in every room of the house, especially children`s room, where they have the opportunity to watch shows while parents are busy doing other stuff. Those violent acts certainly can be reduced by control which starts at the beginning instead of waiting until everyone is helpless to improve the situation. Perhaps one of the crucial problems is the possibility of developing the lack of social skills. Children, while spending time at home in front of television tend to develop anti social skills, which will affect their future and their entire life. Lewis The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the fourth book in The Chronicles of Narnia, and the New Testament in the Bible, particularly the account of Jesus death is not merely coincidental because The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is, in fact, an allegory. An allegory is a story with morals in which characters, plots and settings are used as symbols. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis is rich with Christian symbolism even though the allegorical nature of it is the subject of much controversy. Nonetheless, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is an allegory. Aslan is symbolic to Jesus, God, and the goodness of the world. C. S. Lewis seems to have taken the form or Aslan as a lion for the Bible as well. See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed (Revelations 5:5). Lewis tells the story of the Paschal Mystery through Aslan. The plots and settings of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe only further prove that Narnia is an allegory. They are a class of proteins that have a unique three dimensional structure that allows it to bind with a specific substrate to facilitate a reaction. Many biological reactions will not occur spontaneously in the cell; there is simply not enough energy for the reaction to take place. Enzymes make these reactions possible by lowering the reactionГ‚ s activation energy. • 22. What The Bourgeoisie Essay Title: What the bourgeoisie...produces...is its own grave diggers. Its fall and the victory of the proletariat are equally inevitable. Consider this statement with reference to the pattern of class struggle that Marx sees appearing under capitalism. Through my analysis of Marx and Engel s The Communist Manifesto I have come to somewhat agree with their view that in the end the Proletariat always come out on top. It seems to me that it is nothing but a vicious circle . Marx comments that through our history there has always been evidence of two classes, in other words: the rich and the poor, he makes the claim that there has forever been the server and the served: ...we find almost everywhere a complicated arrangement of society ... (D.Mclellan, Marx, OUP 1977) pg 223. Therefore the middle man was cut out, he was no longer important, the division between the powerful and powerless grew to become much more. The place of manufacture was taken by the giant, Modern Industry, the place of the industrial middle class, by industrial millionaires, the leaders of the whole industrial armies, the modern bourgeois. Marx, in my opinion alludes that the Bourgeois have ruined many of the more caring and loving parts of our society. The family is an institution that has been present for many centuries, people associate the family as the core of a person s development, the way a person is brought up essentially shapes the rest of one s life, the person one become, the way one live one s life and the way in which one s relationships develop in adult life. The bourgeoisie has torn away from the family its sentimental veil, and has reduced the family relation to a mere money relation. (D.Mclellan, Marx, OUP 1977) pg 224. After reading the article the reader discovers that the phrase emotional labor refers to when an employee has to push their feelings aside in order to please or influence their boss or clients. This idea can be easily applied to his play Othello. In this book Shakespeare writes of an individual, Iago, who thinks himself to be wise in his plan to get back at his superior, Othello, who kept a job opportunity from him. Iago schemes and plans not thinking about anyone else but himself and his goal to get himself promoted. Iago thinks he is smarter than everyone else and does not care about the consequences of his actions. Throughout the book, the reader learns that Iago has a grand sense of self, needs admiration while taking much pride in his accomplishments, and lacks empathy for the characters whose lives he affects. Accordingly, Iago considers himself a wise man, but the reader realizes hs is, in fact, a fool. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The parallelism of Poe s own personal problems with those of the narrator in The Raven, and the repetitive verse by the raven, makes the reader aware of Poe s prominent tone of melancholy. A strong device for the melancholic tone is Poe s life experiences. The narrator s sorrow for the lost Lenore is paralleled with Poe s own grief regarding the death of his wife. Confined in the chamber are memories of her who had frequented it. These ghostly recollections bring out a state of eager anticipation in the reader to know and be relieved of the bewilderment that the narrator and consequently Poe himself are experiencing; the narrator ponders whether he will see his wife in the afterlife. After Virginnia s lingering death, Poe tried to relieve his grief by drinking. A parallelism is formed in The Raven between the condescending actions of the raven towards the narrator and the taunting of alcohol towards Poe. The raven condescends that Poe will never see his lost love again when uttering, forget this lost Lenore, in line 84.

He explains, I am not a clever speaker at all unless indeed they call a clever speaker on who speaks the truth (17b). Socratescontinues to paint himself as a common person by showing he is an elderly man being attacked by the youth of Athens. This is quite cleaver of Socrates to not only put himself as a defenseless man but also showed his accusers as the ones who are lying. His main defense is I don t know, this is Socrates ignorance and he will argue this (Dr. Key). He begins to address the two charges brought against him, by addressing the older accusers that he cannot cross examine first because this is not the first time he has been accused of these things. He is accused of not believing in the gods and teaches more on a physical reason. He brings to the jury s attention of a play by Aristophanes, that had a Socrates character that, swings around, claims to be walking on air, and talks a lot of other nonsense on subjects of which I have no understanding, great or small (19c). He then addresses the accusations that he charges a fee to educate people (19e). Socrates was showing that he is not an expert in these things, and was trying to who that these are qualities of his accusers and not him. He explains to the jury that it was this question of wisdom, and whether he was the wisest person in Athens, that he began questioning the wisdom of his fellow Athenian (21a b). He points to this as to where it all started for him. After bringing the attention to his old accusers, he turns to the accounts at hand. He questions his accuser Meletus, first with the accusations that he is corrupting the youth of Athens. Socrates Asks him if he is a bad influence then, who is the good influence, and Meletus answers, The laws (24b). Although the writers come from different time periods, they share ideas on the concept of deception. Shakespeare was writing to audiences who lived in the Elizabethan time where nobility and social classes were important. In fact, During Shakespeare s time there were only about 55 noble families in England (Elizabethan). Appearances were important to his audiences in social society. During the Gawain poet s time period of Arthurian Romances and stories of chivalry, appearances were equally important in society. The concept of deception has been around since Adam and Eve, and in most instances, it is seen as negative and often harmful. Both authors produce characters who have problems perceiving reality from appearances and in many instances are deceived by appearances. Shakespeare and the Gawain Poet both use trickery and deception as a plot device to create conflict in both works and promote the theme of appearance versus reality. Uniquely, both authors use deception to better the main characters by the end of the works and at the same time, the deception allows the reader to consider moral choices. One way to make the audience or the reader question perception is to create a visual deception. Shakespeare and the Gawain poet use disguise to create visual deceptions in ... • 40. Essay about Xmen Movie Xmen movie I am critiquing the movie X men . This movie is based on a comic book and on an animated series. Both the animated series and the comic book revolve around mutants. These mutants often look human, however many look quite different than any normal human and also their powers are quite extraordinary. This creates one problem when converting to movie form. Make up gadgets and special effectsmust be used so that our reality where the film is made may accurately reflect the reality where the film is set. Also, the characters from the animated seriesand the comic books all have personalities and physical features that the actorsin the film must try to match. This is a difficult thing to do. Not only must the actors... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Speaking of Wolverine, his claws had a bit of a metamorphosis from the original sources. They were much bigger and thicker. This detracted slightly from the idea of the original sources. The claws appeared much more unwieldy however this did not seem to impair wolverine s use of them. And so it did work out well. The claws also brought up the question of how they fit into wolverine s hand, being so much bigger. However, wolverine s healing power did seem to work well. The mind powers of others in the movie were slightly under done. However there were a few scenes that focused on the mind powers of various individuals. Mystique s costuming was very well done. So were her shape changing special effects. The various effects of her shape changing were believable looking and true to form with the various sources. Magneto s powers of magnetism were also well done. The sheer force of will and power behind Magneto was well represented by the special effects. The toad guy was an obvious extra, however, his tongue stretch effect was quite striking and caused the viewer to shrink back and go ugh . The rest of the minor roles were also well supplied with effects. Kitty Pryde s phase and Iceman s flower were well done special effect wise. The general acrobatics and fighting that went on were well choreographed. Many of the maneuvers were a little super human, however, that is to be expected because of the nature of the film. There was a small amount of special effects used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The United States Of The Usa Patriot Act The attacks on the United States of America on September 11th, 2001 fundamentally changed the way the government and its citizens viewed freedom and liberty. With the subsequent enactment of the USA PATRIOT Act, security became the government s top priority. (The USA PATRIOT Act is an acronym which stands for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism.) Congress, eager to put a law on the books to prevent another attack, fast tracked the bill through both houses in six weeks. It passed by a near unanimous vote, with the majority of dissent coming from Democrats. A highly contentious and debated law, the USA PATRIOT Act infringes on Natural Law and the American citizen s Civil Liberties. Also it violates the spirit and letter of the United States Constitution, particularly the Bill of Rights. Many amendments in the Constitution are at a direct contrast with the law s many broadly worded sections, specifically the First Amendment s right to free speech and freedom of assembly, and the Fourth Amendment s guard against unwarranted and illegal search and seizure. The founders of the United States of America understood that certain rights were inalienable and endowed by the creator or nature itself. They established a government of laws, not for the purpose of granting rights but rather for protecting them. Only in America did the founders recognize this and understood if these rights were not explicitly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Role Of Memory In John Steinbeck s The Grapes Of Wrath Wendy seems to bare the brunt of Peter s memory loss in the novel. It is almost a surprise that Peter has not forgotten her sooner, and in the beginning of the adventure it appears that he almost did. He constantly abandons them for adventure during their flights to Neverland and he often forgets who they are when he returns. Wendy comments, And if he forgets them so quickly...how can we expect that he will go on remembering us . Peter has a hard time remember people and events, but does not seem to have a problem with navigating in and around the island. He flies Wendy and her brothers to the island, and later directs them back to their house. Navigation is a type of memory that Peter has retained, and he also does well remembering his most... Despite the obvious concern with a child killing another human, what is even more concerning is that Peter kills and then forgets about it. A Freudian psychologist might suggest that he is subconsciously blocking out the memory, but times are past that era, instead it might just be that Peter cannot retain memory because he has no room to grow. Peter never ages, and his playful face is the same throughout generations. While Peter is blessed with never having to grow up, and therefore never having any real form of responsibility, he is cursed with the inability to remember. Memories grow with the individual, it takes place within time regardless of the duration and is encoded into the brain likewise. The timeline in Neverland is unclear because years or seconds may pass relative to the real world, but even if the time ratio was one to one, there is without doubt that Peter s internal clock has stopped ticking. His past therefore can be considered infinite because no one knows if he is twenty years old or two thousand. Infinite memory is incomprehensible, as previously stated, as other characters grow up in Peter Pan their childhood becomes merely snapshots. Peter may not have the ability to retain memory because he can only live in the present. For him to have memory of the past would suggest that he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
