A new world of applications emerges in the home from the growing variety of things – devices, sensors, actuators – potentially available. Several application domains are considered, e.g., security, energy efficiency, comfort, ambient assisted living, multimedia communication. The Smart Home is slowly taking off.</p>
Several actors exploit a new technical and economic opportunity to catalyze this market. This opportunity is based on the re-use of the infrastructure that telecom operators have deployed for today classic Internet and TV services. It raises technical and business challenges: Telecom operators have to open their home infrastructure to third-party applications while guaranteeing application security and consistency to all home business actors using this infrastructure.
Telecom operators have to open APIs at least two levels of their architecture: APIs in the cloud and APIs on an embedded device environment. This end-to-end infrastructure between the home network and service platforms has also to provide security at several levels, especially a consistent access right management.
The presentation will provide a vision of an open end-to-end architecture providing APIs in the cloud and in a home box to host any application and connect to any device in the Home. Among the standard organizations and industrial alliances, oneM2M standard specifications are making a reference architecture emerge. The implementation of oneM2M standard features in OSGi technology will be detailed, especially the end-to-end access right management discriminating both applications and users when accessing devices.
This infrastructure is currently prototyped thanks to the integration of open source software bricks provided by <a>Open the Box</a>, <a>Eclipse SmartHome</a> and <a>Eclipse OM2M</a> open initiatives.
Using open source for IoT

IoTlondon - mbed based IoT Gateway talk

Modeling self-adaptative IoT architectures
This document proposes a domain-specific language (DSL) to model self-adaptive Internet of Things (IoT) architectures. The DSL allows modeling IoT systems with multiple layers including device, edge, fog, and cloud layers. It also models deployment of container-based applications across these layers. The DSL includes a sublanguage for expressing self-adaptation rules to enable systems to dynamically adapt to changes at runtime. Example adaptation rules and a tool for generating IoT system configurations from models are presented. Future work includes expanding the DSL to model more complex adaptation strategies and validating the approach in industrial settings.

Dr. Omar Elloumi is a Head of M2M and Smart Grid standards within Alcatel-Lucent CTO. He is the recently elected chair of oneM2M Technical Plenary after having led the oneM2M Architecture group delivering the first release of specifications.
Omar joined Alcatel-Lucent in 1999 and held several positions including research, strategy and system architecture. He holds a Ph. Joaquin Prado is the Director of Technical Programs at Open Mobile Alliance. Prior to joining OMA, Joaquin worked for Vodafone UK where he planned, defined, developed and implemented new products and services. For OMA, Joaquin is responsible for formalizing a series of program improvements across the organization. These programs range from lowering the cost of running the OMA Work Program to bringing in new tools and technologies, e.g. GitHub, XML Validation tools, etc. Joaquin is also responsible for the preparation and execution of OMA TestFests.

Among the standard organizations and industrial alliances, oneM2M standard specifications are making a reference architecture emerge. The implementation of oneM2M standard features in OSGi technology will be detailed, especially the end-to-end access right management discriminating both applications and users when accessing devices.
This infrastructure is currently prototyped thanks to the integration of open source software bricks provided by <a>Open the Box</a>, <a>Eclipse SmartHome</a> and <a>Eclipse OM2M</a> open initiatives.

IoTlondon - mbed based IoT Gateway talk

Simon Lemay and Hannes Tschofenig gave a tutorial about the Lightweight Machine-to-Machine (LWM2M) standard developed by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) to participants from the IETF ACE working group.
LWM2M offers several features that are relevant for Internet of Things security and also for the work in the IETF ACE working group, such as: Software Updates, Distribution of keys and access control policies (during a process called bootstrapping in the specification), Remote Device and Application, Configuration, and Diagnostics.
In summary, LWM2M is a device lifecycle management solution that builds on IETF protocols designed to be lightweight, such as CoAP, various CoAP extensions (such as Resource Directory), and DTLS.

Open source software will provide the key building blocks that will promote the interoperability and flexibility required by Industry 4.0 solutions.

The “internet of things” is the next revolutionary wave following profound changes brought to us by Personal Computers (connecting places) and Mobile Phones (connecting people on the go). This third wave heralds the beginning of the new era of pervasive connectivity, embedded intelligence, and application convergence. It will be the world where smart things will communicate among themselves and with us enabling greener, more efficient, and at the same time more comfortable environment.
This talk will present a platform and products designed to serve the new markets enabled by the Internet of Things, with a particular focus on the value of the OSGi framework enabling convergence of Home Automation, Smart Energy, Electric Vehicle Charging, and e-health on a single remotely manageable platform. It will also provide insights on how the platform was developed leveraging the extensibility offered by the OSGi framework and ProSyst’s modular architecture.
The built-in OSGi stack provides Java-level abstraction of the network interfaces and Smart Energy Profile 2.0 stack as well as cloud integration features such as web server, web services and standards-based remote management. The OSGi framework is the key enabler of the product lifecycle and remote application management mandatory for service provider driven deployments. The Smart Energy 2.0 standard is a key element of the future smart grid. And the work presented in this talk describes the first platform integrating the SEP 2.0 protocol stack with an OSGi based middleware. The OSGi based solution also provides higher level of device security through the use of secure element. The UDK-21 is build around a System-on-Chip STreamPlug (ST2100), the solution features a fully integrated HomePlug PHY/MAC and Analog Front End combined with the ARM926EJ-S processor and a rich set of interfaces.
A demo showing Smart Energy Profile 2.0 use cases will outline these features. The demo will show how web based applications can interact with the OSGi stack on the already publicly available UDK-21 based gateway to control remote devices, such as a thermostat or an electric load. The access to SEP 2.0 devices will be done by the means of JSON-RPC based APIs, independent of the underlying device protocol, hence highlighting the benefits of a generic protocol agnostic architecture from the application standpoint. Other examples of the products that can be built around UDK-21 include Electric Vehicle Charger, Smart Meter, and a Basement Sensor Hub.
