Coal Mining Essay
Coal Mining Coal, a mineral I have discussed previously, is necessary to our everyday lives. Coal is
an incredible source of energy; it heats our houses and buildings, and also fuels stoves. You may often
wonder where this extremely useful mineral comes from. Coal does not just appear; it needs to be
mined through a process which results in our being able to utilize it. Coal mining is fairly inexpensive,
is carried out on a large scale and can be mined in either underground or surface mines. Surface
mining is the coal mining process that accounts for around 60% of the United States coal. It tends to
be very efficient, with a single worker recovering up to 30 to 40 tons of coal in a day. To begin surface
mining coal, a drill must ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the coal has been removed form the earth, it is still not ready for use; it must first be refined.
Coal must first be separated form foreign materials, for example other minerals, to be considered
useful to us. One way of doing this is called coal washing. The coal is first crushed into smaller
pieces, and then a liquid is used to separate the coal based on density. Coal that is higher in density
harbors more ash, so is left behind, whereas low density coal has contains little ash and is more
desirable. Another process to separate coal from foreign materials is call dry shaling, which works
without the use of liquid. After being separated, coal can be processed into coke, and eventually steel.
When coal is transported, it can be by means of truck, train, or ship, and can go nearly anywhere.
Truck and train transportation are the cheapest forms, particularly train if you are shipping a great
amount, and ships are used for overseas transport. Underground mining accounted for 96% of the coal
produced each year when it was done manually, and this was fifty years ago. Most underground mines
are located to the east of the Mississippi River; however there are some in Utah and Colorado. More
than two thirds of the coal mined underground is done so using continuous mining machines in the
room pillar method. The continuous miner breaks the coal with tungsten bits on a revolving cylinder,
and then conveys it to waiting shuttles which then take the coal to the

Motivation to Breastfeed
The motivation to breastfeed: A fit to the opponent process theory? from the Journal of Personality
and Social Psychology (Myers Siegel, 1985). I This chose this article because I wanted a psychology
article on breastfeeding. I have ideas of breastfeeding research I want would like to do for my senior
thesis (if I get into the honors psychology program), and down the road for my dissertation. I selected
this article from other breastfeeding ones because it uses data, and because it talks about the
motivation behind breastfeeding. As a lactation consultant I encounter times when I can tell that the
mother comes to me because breastfeeding is just what you do, but really doesn t want to do it; so the
information from the article can give me an idea how to better help my clients. This article compared
the act of breastfeeding to addictive behaviors. It talked about how the bliss experienced while
breastfeeding, the stress right before breastfeeding, and the withdrawal during weaning. I enjoyed
reading this because this is some of the reasons that I went into psychology. I want to understand
breastfeeding from an intellectual stand point; to define it as behaviors and break it down it ways that
creates an environment compatible with success. One thing I took from the article is ways to study
breastfeeding that allows for control groups. They took surveys from both breastfeeding women, and
from women who have never breastfed. They were asked them what they thought the

Balanced Diet
A balanced diet is one that provides a good intake of energy and nutrients for maintenance of the body
and for the good health. A diet can easily support normal body functioning, yet may not be a balanced
diet. An ideal human diet contains fat, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, water and fibre all in
correct proportions. These proportions vary for each individual because everyone has different type of
metabolic style and levels of activity.
Malnutrition results from an unbalanced diet, this can be due to an excess of some dietary components
and lack of other components, not just a complete lack of food. Too much of one component can be as
much harm to the body as too little. Nowadays we have enough food to eat and keep our ... Show

Vitamin D is therefore essential in growing children s diets to enable the growth of strong bones.
Without adequate amounts of vitamin D children can develop rickets, which is the deformation of the
legs caused when they lack calcium to strengthen the bones. In adults a lack of vitamin D in the diet
can lead to osteomalacia, a progressive softening of the bones which can make them highly
susceptible to fracture.
Vitamin D is made by the body when exposed to sunlight and is stored in the muscles, however, if the
skin is rarely exposed to the sunlight or is dark little vitamin D is produced. Foods such as eggs and
oily fish are all rich in vitamin D.
Vitamin K, phylloquinone, is found in dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale. It is a fat
soluble vitamin which is involved in the clotting process of blood. In the intestines bacteria synthesise
a number of important clotting factors which need vitamin K. Without vitamin K cuts can fail to heal
and internal bleeding can occur.
Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, known chemically as ascorbic acid. It is found in citrus fruits
such as oranges and lemons, and also in potatoes and tomatoes. The main function of vitamin C is the
formation of connective tissues such as collagen. It is also known to be an antioxidant which helps to
remove toxins from the body and aids the

Chrysalids Group Seminar
The Chrysalids Seminar
Sumayyah Betrayal and loyalty those are two strong words that might have affected us some time in
our life. The terms betrayal and loyalty are also relatable when we started our novel the Chrysalids by
John Wyndham. In the novel the author shows the concept of betrayal and loyalty as the ultimate
result of poor relationships.
Jamal Betrayal and loyalty are represented by the various kinds of relationships and their impact on
one another.
Misty This is illustrated in two ways. Firstly the act of loyalty is shown as a result of true friendship.
Pratish And secondly the act of betrayal is the result of poor family relationships and friendships. We
would now like to begin this seminar by supporting and proving ... Show more content on

It is clear that Anne no longer cared for the group ultimately betraying and risking the life of everyone
in the group. This effected many people such as Anne herself because she ended up taking her life
because she did not the trust the group also the whole group need to stay more alarmed just in case
anyone found out about their skills.
Pratish Betrayal was also the result when aunt Harriet asks to borrow her sisters baby to receive a
certificate for normality, the sister refuses furiously showing no empathy or kindness. This is seen
when Aunt Harriet enters David s moms room and begs to borrow Petra in exchange for some days.
David s mom cold heartedly replies In all my life. I have never heard anything so outrageous... To
think that I should led you my own child This quote is important because it shows that Aunt Harriet s
sister is so hateful towards deviants and blasphemies that she would not even bother helping her own
sister. It also shows that Aunt Harriet and her sister don t have a strong family relationship. This
develops the thesis because it shows poor relationships are the results of heart breaking betrayals.
Misty Therefore it is clear that betrayal and loyalty is depended on the kind of relationship you have
with the person. For example this was proven when David attempts to save Sophie from Allan even
though it was a great risk.

The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member by Sanyika Shakur...
This book Monster: the Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member by Sanyika Shakur aka Kody Scott
depicts all of the events that Kody went through from the day he joined a gang up until when he
decides to leave the gang, and his life after the gang. He joined the Eight Tray Crips when he was only
eleven years old. He gets initiated into the gang after his sixth grade graduation, and he describes his
initiation as an even bigger right of passage into society than his own graduation. The reasons that
Kody suggests that he had joined a gang has to do a lot with the whole concept of belonging. He
makes it sound like his family life was not a very good one, and that in school he felt as if he had no
power because he hints at being bullied as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this story Kody s actions are learned first through the observations of others in his neighborhood or
school. People all around him at the time were deciding to join gangs; it was the thing to do. During
his initiation he observed what the others did when it was his turn to shoot at the people in the streets,
and after he shot and potentially killed them he was praised and rewarded with officially being a
member of the gang. After that night his gang members positively reinforced him anytime he killed or
hurt anyone from the enemy gangs, at times even civilians. Even while his mother was disapproving
and there was a potential for severe punishment from the police, the positive reinforcement from his
friends was more powerful because of his level of respect and admiration for them. An aspect of this
theory that Albert Bandura claims teaches people violence is behavioral modeling, which states that
people learn how to act by modeling what they have seen others do. This is shown throughout the
book because Kody ends up joining a gang, like many others that he knows have done, and he goes
along with what other people in the gang are doing and saying. He grows up around his gang members
and fashions his behaviors to be similar to the ones that he looks up to, and this behavior is repeated
with his younger brother, who idolizes Kody, when he joins

George and Lennie s troubles to those of the modern day world. He writes how the friendship between
the two boys is a shining example of how even though the world is harsh at times, love and friendship
can still exist. Topham gives the example of George and Lennie s friendship as support of this idea.
Topham emphasizes that there is always an upside to bad times and uses the struggles of the main
characters to prove his idea. Topham does not provide any evidence besides George and Lennie s
friendship to support his ideas and opinion of Mice and Men. While Topham does explain

12 Angry Men Appeals
12 Angry Men is a captivating courtroom drama in which the life of an eighteen year old boy, on trial
for murder, is put into the hands of 12 jurors, each with their own personal views. However, despite
this difference in views, all of these men are persuaded by the use of appeals, such as logos and ethos
showed through witnesses and evidence. However, the accuracy of these will soon be brought into
question as well, in an attempt to sway the juror s votes. And, although both sides of the argument
used these appeals, the manner in which there were used ultimately determined this case, in a variety
of ways. Appeals play a large role in the persuasion of the men throughout this film, in a variety of

Here s another guess: maybe she honestly thought she saw the boy kill his father I say she only saw a

their decision off of. He is showing these men that there is a possibility of the witness that testified
being wrong for a very realistic reason. This allows the men to reevaluate their decision after the
realization of this changing fact. This use of appeals is immensely important due to the fact that it is
the sole reason that these men s minds are changed. Through the entirety of this film, it is extremely
evident that appeals were the driving force in the persuasion of these men. Through witness
testimonies and evidence at the beginning that showed an undoubtedly innocent boy, to the logic and
reasoning that was later brought about that showed the possibility of this boy s innocence. Both sides
of this argument used these appeals in making a decision, however, the manner in which there were

Gentrification In Global Cities Essay
Each of the three characteristic contribute to economic growth that subsequently affects social and
spatial relationships within global cities. Sassen states that, Research covering the last two and even
three decades shows sharp increases in socioeconomic and spatial inequalities within major cities of
the developed world and now increasingly also in cities of the global South (Sassen, 241). With the
rise of global cities and an increase in socioeconomic inequalities comes gentrification. Gentrification
changes the market for everyone, as property values go up, people become displaced and
homelessness becomes a bigger problem. Gentrification in a global city is the desire for culture,
restaurants, museums, bars, day care, etc. Examples of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the mid 1970 s there has been economic and social transformation in the economy in terms of
specific form of urban labor (Sassen, 246). A key shift is the change in occupational and industrial
employment which has also seen a shift in balance. Sassen states that, Such shifts directly affect the
mix of job characteristics, including earnings levels and employment stability, and the types of careers
available to local workers (Sassen , 246). The new type of flexibility leads to an increase in flexible
employment and precarious work. This means that there is an increase in part time jobs that include no
regular scheduling, no set hours and can be highly unstable for the employee. With this also comes the
rise of jobs paying under the poverty level. This affects different cities because workers under the
poverty level can not maintain a middle class level of living, thus shaping the decline of the middle.
Instead of having more areas of middle class structure there is an increase in the separation between
high and low. An example of this can be seen throughout cities with the decrease in middle retail,
which means that there is large separation between the retail to high end and low end, but not much in
the middle. Aside from retail, labor markets in cities are also structures around sets of jobs that are
very particular (Sassen,

Innocence In John Knowles A Separate Peace
John Knowles captivating novel A Separate Peace explores the eventful life of two adolescent students
in New Hampshire during a time of complication and chaos in World War II. Finny, an astonishingly
athletic and adventurous boy, gets himself and his best friend Gene Forrester into a bit of mischief
during their experiences in school, where he tends to do the opposite of what others expect him to do,
making him a truly unique character. Despite living in a time of World War II, the evils of the world

the military display the internal change that he undergoes throughout the novel; Finny s feelings
toward the war symbolize the destruction of his innocence. When Brinker confronts Finny about his
accident, Have you ever thought that you didn t just fall out of that tree? he shakes his head sharply,
closing his eyes...he [starts] across the marble floor towards the doors, resulting in his body falling
clumsily down the white marble stairs (Knowles 169,176,177). Finny begins to feel his innocent world

pushed him off of the tree. Finny falling down the stairs in chaotic fashion symbolizes realization that
his world begins to fall apart. Finny s once innocent but now crushed personality displays how even

Specifi Servant-Leadership Theory Of Military Leadership
Because USAA was founded and is managed by high ranking officers in the military, the ingrained
military leadership philosophy, which is the rational investigation of the truths and principles of being,
knowledge or conduct, is the type of foundation which guides the organizational culture and
environment of the company (Colonel Maureen K. Leboeuf, US Army, n.d.). With that being noted,
the principles of the hiring practice at USAA designates that one in four applicants selected should at
least be a veteran. Generally speaking, who would be better to serve military individuals in the
company than an individual who truly understands the needs of the military family? According to the
Government Information Library and A Best Practices Report; The employees at USAA work in a
campus like environment situated on 286 acres of rolling land, which provides a sense of space and
tranquility. Employees are provided with parking, fitness and recreation facilities, and many other
employee benefits that enhance their cultural climate (1997). Because this set up is quite common for

Issues In The Neutral Curriculum
It is very common that worldview issues, influence curriculum decisions in public education. When
discussing the curriculum itself, one must understand that it reveals the information and skills that
schools are theoretical doing, to help students master the content knowledge need to succeed in life. A
curriculum can be a system of practices arranging from study guides, to books. Since the fact that a
curriculum has distinguishes a great deal of elucidation, there is often times no discrepancies being
presented. In Van Brummelen, 2002, he talks about a number of curriculums and issues, which
influence such curriculum. One curriculum he talks about is the Neutral Curriculum. In the Neutral

Many establishments in the educational system change as culture unfolds (Van Brummelen, 2002, p.
81). The reason that change is necessary in the educational curriculum, is for the reason that in the past
decade, there has been an emergence of expansions that are performing research based, top practice
teaching strategies, which are escorted by discoveries regarding learning and learners. With change, it
is predominant throughout our school in the U.S. In our country, these changes are taking place
rapidly, against a framework of the move from an industrialized economy that is solely constructed on
the universal traffic of information. In America, our nation has progressed to a post modern
civilization. In our schools, they are not designed to prepare our children for the needed knowledge
our economy or its demand for the effects over the process.
Another important influencer in the educational curriculum is worldview. Worldview ingresses the
equality from a variety of sources. In every school throughout our country, every curriculum, text
book, and teacher has a worldview that influences the students. Sometimes this may be the student s
background (where they come from), or their surrounding environmental setting. As parents of these
students, they need to identify what that worldview is and whether or not it is healthy for their
children, especially as we tie it to their educational

Scarecrow In The Wizard Of Oz
In the movie The Wizard of Oz, the scarecrow already had a brain, but he didn t know it yet. First off,
the scarecrow could talk, and to be able to talk, you have to have a brain. For example, the first time
the scarecrow appeared in the story he talked. He was still hanging in the corn field on his stick, and
he told Dorothy which way to go. She did not know who was talking because she could see no one.
This alone is a big reason. It is physically impossible for someone to talk without a brain because the
brain is what sends out the signals to tell your body to talk. Next, the scarecrow could skip and walk,
which is also impossible without a brain. In one particular scene from the movie, Dorothy, the Tin

How Does Dawnette Hedge Changed Different Aspects Of A...
There is a lot of different aspects to a person s identity. The valuable information people have gathered
and constructed throughout their lives to become unique individuals. The way others see people and a
lot of different aspects bring out a personal identity. In this essay, I will be addressing some of the
ways that Dawnette Hedge came to be herself and have particular identities. The steps and processes
she has created and others have influenced, that have helped her create her identity through,
relationships, empathy, emotions, and divorce. Dawnette is a mother of five children. She took on this
identity role at the age of 20yrs old. This identity has molded her into a better person by being selfless,
wanting her children to look up to her as a role model. She has failed in this role of a mother
numerous times and fallen short of her expectations she admits. This identity has also brought out all
of her emotions from happy to the extreme opposite of irate. It is a learning experience and an ongoing
changing of her identity as a mom. With the changing of ages of her children from year to year. She
can remember a time when her 16yr old daughter played beauty salon with her sister and cut all of her
sister s hair off; after they had used all of their mother s makeup and destroyed it. The mixed emotions
of anger and frustration from that experience will never be forgotten. She has also experienced her

Artemis Twin Mother
Artemis is the twin sister of Apollo and the daughter of Zeus and Leto. Her mother gave birth to her
on the island of Ortygia and after she was born she immediately helped her mom give birth to her twin
brother and with that ...becoming the protector of childbirth and labour. (Megas, 1997 2017)
She also asked Zeus to grant her eternal chastity and virginity. Artemis focussed on hunting and nature
that s why her symbols are bows, arrows, stags, hunting dog, and the moon. She was is the protector
of wild and tame animals, agriculture, and animal herding. But just as she was the protector of all this
things she also could cause sudden death and diseases with her twin brother Apollo.
Artemis would protect women, children, and animals unless they disgrace her or her family. One day
the wife of Amphion which goes by Niobe was bragging that she was superior from Leto because Leto
was only blessed with two children and she was blessed with 14 children. Leto feeling angry told her
children Apollo and Artemis to kill Niobe s children one by one. Artemis killed the females and
Apollo killed the males. They killed them with arrows that were dipped in poison. Niobe s children
remained unburied for nine whole days because Zeus warn anyone that would try to bury them he
would turn those people into stone.

The Model Of Health Care
Scenario One
Q1. Which model of health would be the most suitable for you to use and why?
The practice of health care can be divided into two models in which a health professional may
approach their patient. This includes the medical model, where the patient is only viewed as a
syndrome, or the host of a disease, or the biopsychosocial model (BPS), which was developed by
George L. Engel in 1977.1 The BPS model appreciates the person as a whole, having psychological
and socio economic impacts on their health and adherence, as well as the ailment they may or may not
be suffering from at any point in time.1 In the case of LH, where it is clear her health and wellbeing is
being affected by her lifestyle, it would be more appropriate to approach the situation with the
empathetic biopsychosocial model. The health professional is then able to understand LH s health and
wellbeing by linking it to her social setting, namely her stress relatedly to her role as a single mother
unstable living conditions. They can also appreciate her unwillingness to quit smoking if they connect
it to the stress in her life. Understanding how LH s unemployment, homelessness and parenthood
affects her ability to adopt good health care, can assist health professionals in developing an
individualised health care plan for LH.
Q2. Identify some of the barriers to medication adherence for this patient?
Using the BPS model, the barriers to medication adherence can be predicted. A significant factor to

Similarities Between Hammurabi And Moses
Hammurabi and Moses When reflecting on significant members of ancient times, Hammurabi and
Moses symbolize substantial advancement in the creation of laws. Hammurabi of Babylon introduced
his code centuries apart from Moses and his laws for the Hebrews; however, there are similarities
shared between the two. Several reasons can be distinguished as to what accounts for the comparison
within each set of laws. Along with having an abundance of similarities, the differences shared
between the two are also evident. To understand the similarities and differences analyzed in this essay,
each set of laws will be compared regarding the treatment of parents, marriage, dishonesty in court,
class systems, importance of agriculture, and the customs of each civilization. The time period,
culture, and geographic location are responsible for the similarities and differences of Hammurabi s
Code and The Law of Moses.
To begin, Hammurabi s Code and The Mosaic Laws included that parents should be obeyed and
respected. This is one characteristic that is shared between the rules. Because of the time in which
Hammurabi and Moses lived in, it was not common to imagine a child disobeying his parents. People
most likely thought that a child would always obey his parents, and that this shared law was accepted
knowledge. Hammurabi states that If a son has struck his father, his hands shall be cut off,
(Hammurabi, 195). Mosaic Law also mentions, If someone has a stubborn and rebellious son

Moustafa, acknowledging The Authors own work with great respect decides to invite him to dinner to

Watergate Scandal Essay
On June 18, 1972, the Washington Post published an article under the title 5 Held in Plot to Bug
Democrats Office Here . The author, Alfred E. Lewis, claimed that five men, one being an ex CIA
agent, three being native born Cubans, and the last being said to have trained Cuban exiles for guerilla
warfare, were caught planting bugs in the offices of the National Democratic Committee. This article
sparked an important breakthrough in American journalism. Catching the attention of Post writers Carl
Bernstein and Bob Woodward, they began to pursue the story. The works later published by Bernstein
and Woodward unmasked the man behind the bugging plot, Richard Nixon, President of the United
States. After this discovery, known as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In their conversation, which is written in Dennis Lythgoe s article Tapes Show Nixon Weighed Pros
and Cons of Hush Money , Dean said it would take one million dollars to pay off the five men, an
amount that would be hard to raise. Nixon replied, you could get a million dollars. You could get it in
cash. I know where it could be gotten. It is not easy, but it could be done. The president s own words
proved that he was involved with the break in and that he used hush money to keep witnesses silent.
Another tape recording, called the smoking gun , uncovered Nixon s exploitation of the CSI. In the
tape, Nixon plans to have Richard Helms, the Director of the CIA, and Vernon A. Walters, the Deputy
Director of the CIA, call the Director of the CIA, Patrick Gray, and demand that he stop the Watergate
investigation. This crime was more severe than the hush money crime, and it was the prime reason
Nixon was charged with obstruction of justice.
Nixon was secondly charged with Abuse of Power (Article II), essentially because of his misuse of
executive personnel (historyplace.com). He used the FBI to harass enemies that he saw as political
opponents (presidentprofiles.com). Nixon requested investigations of these enemies in an attempt to
find information about them that he could leak to the press. He used the Secret Service as well to gain
a furtive intelligence of Senator Edward Kennedy s personal

Hyperkinesis
According to Conrad reading, medicalization is defining a behavior as
a medical problem or illness and mandating or licensing the medical profession to treat it
(McLeod Wright, 2013, p. 37). An example of a deviant behavior that has been
medicalized in our society is hyperkinesis also known as ADHD. Hyperkinesis is
known as Minimal Brain Dysfunction. The typical symptoms are: excess of motor
activities (hyperactivity) very short attention span, and restlessness behavior (McLeod
Wright, 2013, p. 38). During the 1970 s, many of the hyperkinesis symptoms were
deviant behaviors and boys had a higher prevalence than girls. Society did not view this
as a social problem until ADHA became problematic. Clinical and social ... Show more content on

and horrible cramps, it can also affect your everyday life.
In the reading, Kleinman and Schulz both focuses on culture. From Kleinman s
book, he asserted that psychiatric diagnoses are culturally based on interpretations of
psychological, social, and biological experiences rather than objective classification of
naturally occurring (McLeod Wright, 2013, p. 63). In the book, he gives an example of
Mrs. Lin who lives in China. He explains her symptoms have worsened. She sought to
get help from different physicians and from traditional Chinese medicine. For a North
American psychiatrist, Mrs. Lin meets the criteria for a major depressive disorder
(McLeod Wright, 2013, p. 64). However, the Chinese psychiatrist viewed her disorder
as a physical problem and a physical cause. Cultural can influence our interpretations and
how we viewed them is culturally meaningful. In the Schulz reading, she describes
antidepressant medication in Japan. Pharmaceutical companies introduced idea of mild

The Impact Of Social Worker On Australian Society
The role of the Social worker is varied as it involves the facilitation of change and empowerment of
the individual through social, cultural and environmental influences. Between 1910 and 1970, the role
of the social worker was significant due to the impact of the Stolen Generation on Australian society.
The Stolen Generation was a dark period in the Australian history where many Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander children were often taken without consent from their homes and families by the
government, police and welfare authorities. The children were taken from their homes in order to try
to civilize them by assimilation into white society (McCarthy 2000). The impacts of this period often
resulted in severe psychological consequences for the children, the loss of identity, social isolation,
depression, alcohol abuse and an increased level of violence. The role of the Social Worker was
significant during this period as they were often involved with removing children from their homes
and were also required to participate in the reconciliation process to improve the relationships between
Indigenous peoples and the wider Australian community. One of the lasting effects of this practice is
the distrust of indigenous people towards the social welfare profession. Traditionally, Social Workers
are seen as human rights workers who advocate for the people to ensure equal access to all services by
ensuring services are in place to meet human rights such as the right to

Central Processing Units and Graphic Processing Units
In the age of parallel computing, there has been a consistent growth of cores available on the central
processing unit (CPU). Alas, the free lunch is now over and the CPU is facing the end of the easily
obtained performance gains from Moore s Law. Another processing unit, the graphics processing unit
(GPU), is also under the influence of Moore s Law. And as the graphical standards demanded by
driving markets have consistently risen, the companies that produce the GPU have consistently
delivered a product that was capable of meeting these standards. The GPU has grown efficient, if not
more efficient than the CPU, at handling floating point calculations. Due to this, the GPU is no longer
restricted to the graphics related industries and is seeing use in applications outside of graphical
processing. Therefore, and an analysis of the graphical processing unit will be conducted. The focus
will be on the history of the graphical processing unit, the tools that assist with the utilization of the
GPU, and the impact that it has made in the field of parallel and high performance computing. Similar
to the technologies that society has grown accustomed to, the GPU did not emerge onto the market as
the sophisticated piece of hardware that it is currently. To reach this point in time, there were many
years of development and experimentation that led to the development of the GPUs available today.
One of the first companies to develop a piece of dedicated graphics hardware was IBM. In

The Greatest Causes Of The Scientific Revolution
The scientific revolution was a period of time where there was many improvements of life, technology
and understanding of the world around us. People began to realize that nothing was being achieved
when religion was the only answer to anything and realised that you can have a good life before death.
This resulted in a new lifestyle for civilians and a happier life. The fight for who was the cause of the
greatest effect of the Scientific Revolution is an ongoing debate. Today I will be breaking down many
people who put their foot forwards in a time of need and seeing who was the greatest. They will be put
into a bracket starting with eight people on each side and within four tiers of battles (tier one being the
first round of battles and tier four being the championship or fight for who had the biggest impact on
The Scientific Revolution) there will be announced a winner. In the first clash of philosophers in the
first tier we have Francis Bacon versus Robert Boyle. These two were matched together because of
their involvement in early science. Francis Bacon was the developer of the Scientific Method, which is
one of the most commonly used ways to figure anything out. Robert Boyle helped advance some
things, but my verdict is that overall Francis Bacon was more successful in long term advancements so
he wins. The next matchup of the first tier is Robert Hooke versus Joseph Priestly. They were matched
together because of their significance of their discoveries, and how they

The Ethical Dilemma Of Hawaii Regarding The Construction...
Abstract
This paper will talk about the ethical dilemma that has been a controversial issue in Hawaii regarding
the construction of the thirty meter telescope being built on Mauna Kea, the most sacred land in the
entire pacific. This issue has risen concerns regarding the local community, the Native Hawaiians and
the TMT organization. The ethical dilemma here is to build or not to build? Yes, Hawaii wants to
preserve the host culture, but should Native Hawaiians prevent the development of new technology?
With this telescope, according to the TMT website, it will be able to see the formation of galaxies,
thirteen billion light years away. This can answer humankinds most compelling question...Where did
life begin?
Mauna Kea is currently the tallest mountain in the Hawaiian Chain. 4,205 meters above sea level,
Mauna Kea is located on the island of Hawaii. It is the second largest surface that comprises of the
five volcanoes on Mauna Kea. With Mauna Kea being the largest Mountain in the Hawaiian chain, it
is a popular location to look into the galaxies, to find the origin of life.
Humans have looked to the skies for answers, the Polynesians sailed the Pacific using celestial
navigation. Astronomy continues to revolutionize our thinking. Today, with the construction of the
most powerful telescope, humankind may have the answers to the origin of life. However, this
telescope is being built atop Mauna Kea, one of the most sacred lands in the entire Pacific. Ua Mau Ke

prescription drug abuse
Prescription Drug Abuse
Millions of people throughout the world are taking drugs on a daily basis. If you were to ask someone
why they take prescription drugs, most people would be taking them for the right reason. However, it s
estimated that twenty percent of people in the United States alone have used prescription drugs for
non medical reasons.1 Prescription drug abuse is a serious and growing problem that often goes
unnoticed. Abusing these drugs can often lead to addiction and even death. You can develop an
addiction to certain drugs that may include: narcotic painkillers, sedatives, tranquilizers, and
stimulants.1 Prescription drugs are the most common abused category of drugs, right next to

For instance, some people mix alcohol and Valium, both of which can slow breathing. The
combination of the two could stop breathing altogether.4 Cough and cold medications are some of the
most commonly abused over the counter medications. They contain an ingredient called
dextromethorphan. However, to get to the high craved by people who use drugs, large quantities are
needed. At high doses, dextromethorphan causes side effects similar to those of the drugs Ketamine,
or PCP, by affecting similar sites to the brain. Ketamine and PCP are considered dissociative drugs,
which make people feel disconnected from their normal selves. When taken as directed, over the
counter drugs are safe and effective, but high doses can cause problems. It s always important to read
the bottle labels and take over the counter medications only as directed.4
Not all prescription drugs have the potential for abuse and addiction. Many drugs don t even act in the
brain. For example, antibiotics are not addictive. On the rare occasion people who take drugs for
medical conditions may become addicted. This is why it is extremely important to be under a doctor s
care while taking prescription medication.4 Most prescription drugs are taken in a form that gets to the
brain slowly at a dose that treats a problem, but doesn t overwhelm the system. Both of which reduce
the likelihood of an addiction. Long term medical use of prescription drugs can

took, I was hooked. I ve been exposed to first hand clinical experiences, job shadowing opportunities,

thing. One experience in particular was my senior project. I successfully implemented
Naturalistic/play based therapy to a four year old with Down syndrome, which presented cognitive

was significantly limited. Eliciting two word responses from a 4 year old who would rather gesture for

Oedipus Excessive Pride
In Oedipus Rex hubris, or excessive pride, is theme that is presented throughout the text. Hubris is the
main reason for Oedipus downfall in the story because it clouds his judgement from the truth.
Oedipus coming into Thebes defeated the Sphinx and saved the city. The people of Thebes praised
him for this feat and made him their king. They viewed him as their great savior who could was so
magnificent he could do anything. Obviously, this could boost a person s ego and make them very
proud. Oedipus is very aware of how important he is by announcing Here I am myself you all know
me, the world knows my fame: I am Oedipus. This is ironic because everyone will know his name for
different reasons at the end of the play. In addition to this, Oedipus put himself above his people by
stating ...you are sick to death, all of you, but sick as you are, not one is sick as I. Which is also ironic
because he is the reason for his people s sickness. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

a demigod at best. Also, Oedipus speaks on behalf of the gods, especially Apollo, even though he is
not a prophet or priest. He calls himself Apollo s champion. When he curses the person who murdered
Laius he says it is because it is what Apollo wants. However, his people do not truly see him the same

A Dream Without My Dream
Everyone dreams at some point in their life. The world is what it is today because of a certain Martin
Luther King Jr announcing his dream to the world. Imagine what the world would be like if no one

There would be no electricity, no telephone, no vaccinations, no transport! The whole of the United

and we d probably all be running about wearing loin clothes in the dark like shown in the Flintstones!
That is, if the human race didn t end up dying out altogether. But, what can I say? People had dreams ,

Magazine Advertisements Have Unhealthy Effects On Young Women
Ali Olmstead
Mass media and Society
Mr. Hight
16 November 2014
Magazine Advertisements Have Unhealthy Effects On Young Women Advertisers often emphasize
sexuality and the importance of physical attractiveness in an attempt to sell products, but researchers
are concerned that this places pressure on women to focus more on their appearances. As stated in an
article from Body Image and Advertising, the average woman sees 400 to 600 advertisements per day
and by the time she is 17 years old, she has received over 250,000 commercial messages through the
media. While only 9% of advertisements have a direct statement about beauty, many more implicitly
emphasize the importance of beauty particularly those that target both women and girls.

Researchers who have done content analysis of girls magazines suggest that unrealistic beauty images
and focus on traditional femininity may damage girls self esteem. (Melissa A. Milkie. 191). Upon
years of looking in the mirror and not liking what they have seen, young women often become
unhappy to the point of depression when comparing themselves to those with a more developed body
image (Meg Kramer). Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and
loss of interest and affects how you feel, think, behave, and can lead to a variety of emotional and
physical problems. Statistics prove that the strongest risk factor for suicide is depression and 15% of
those who are clinically depressed die by suicide (ANAD). Constant unhappiness with appearance can
cause an individual to have a mental distortion of themselves thinking they are overweight or
unattractive and can be perceived as problematic if the individual tries to fix themselves. Although
some researchers believe that advertisers purposely normalize unrealistically thin bodies, in order to
create an unattainable desire that can drive product consumption, the result poses serious potential
harm to young women who view the images

The Culture of Tuscany during the Renaissance
The culture of Tuscany during the renaissance was distinguished by its fine arts caused by the Roman
Empire taking over of Constantinople, which brought Greek knowledge of math, science, architecture,
and the arts to the Tuscan region. In this particular time period, (1429 1519) if it were not for the
introduction of new understandings in math and science, the Tuscans would not have had the
advancements in art and architecture we use to this day. To further expand on this topic, we must look
into additional aspects of Tuscany s culture including geography, work, folkways, and religion.
Tuscany is a fairly large region, compared to others in the middle left of Italy. It is surrounded by the
Tyrrhenian sea to the southwest, and the Apennines along the northeastern border. Tuscany has a
climate of extremes. It has all four seasons, but to extremes. It has very hot summers and fairly cold
winters, along with general clouds but little rain, due to mostly the geography of its location. Most of
the buildings had extreme mathematical alignments, in a grid fashion. Most of the buildings were
made of Stone, Stucco and some clay. The streets were in two semicircles divided by the Arno River.
The streets were aligned in a web pattern, surrounded by the mighty city walls. They had a lot of
natural water from the Tyrrhenian sea, and the various rivers, such as the famous Arno river that cuts
the city of Tuscany in two, having a source at the top of the apennine mountains, generally.

Write your aim, need or opportunity, with an explanation of why it was worth achieving:
My aim was to calculate the velocity of a ferrous projectile propelled by a solenoid.
Originally I planned to build my own coil gun and use it for testing, but as time grew shorter and

Persuasive Speech About Friendship

Welcome, friends. College basketball is back.
I would say it is better than ever, but that would be a lie. We are friends. Friends do not fib to each

College basketball is kind of like your friend from high school who never grew up. Our gender binary

Coal must first be separated form foreign materials, for example other minerals, to be considered useful to us. One way of doing this is called coal washing. The coal is first crushed into smaller pieces, and then a liquid is used to separate the coal based on density. Coal that is higher in density harbors more ash, so is left behind, whereas low density coal has contains little ash and is more desirable. Another process to separate coal from foreign materials is call dry shaling, which works without the use of liquid. After being separated, coal can be processed into coke, and eventually steel. When coal is transported, it can be by means of truck, train, or ship, and can go nearly anywhere. Truck and train transportation are the cheapest forms, particularly train if you are shipping a great amount, and ships are used for overseas transport. Underground mining accounted for 96% of the coal produced each year when it was done manually, and this was fifty years ago. Most underground mines are located to the east of the Mississippi River; however there are some in Utah and Colorado. More than two thirds of the coal mined underground is done so using continuous mining machines in the room pillar method. The continuous miner breaks the coal with tungsten bits on a revolving cylinder, and then conveys it to waiting shuttles which then take the coal to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I This chose this article because I wanted a psychology article on breastfeeding. I have ideas of breastfeeding research I want would like to do for my senior thesis (if I get into the honors psychology program), and down the road for my dissertation. I selected this article from other breastfeeding ones because it uses data, and because it talks about the motivation behind breastfeeding. As a lactation consultant I encounter times when I can tell that the mother comes to me because breastfeeding is just what you do, but really doesn t want to do it; so the information from the article can give me an idea how to better help my clients. This article compared the act of breastfeeding to addictive behaviors. It talked about how the bliss experienced while breastfeeding, the stress right before breastfeeding, and the withdrawal during weaning. I enjoyed reading this because this is some of the reasons that I went into psychology. I want to understand breastfeeding from an intellectual stand point; to define it as behaviors and break it down it ways that creates an environment compatible with success. One thing I took from the article is ways to study breastfeeding that allows for control groups. They took surveys from both breastfeeding women, and from women who have never breastfed. During his initiation he observed what the others did when it was his turn to shoot at the people in the streets, and after he shot and potentially killed them he was praised and rewarded with officially being a member of the gang. After that night his gang members positively reinforced him anytime he killed or hurt anyone from the enemy gangs, at times even civilians. Even while his mother was disapproving and there was a potential for severe punishment from the police, the positive reinforcement from his friends was more powerful because of his level of respect and admiration for them. An aspect of this theory that Albert Bandura claims teaches people violence is behavioral modeling, which states that people learn how to act by modeling what they have seen others do. This is shown throughout the book because Kody ends up joining a gang, like many others that he knows have done, and he goes along with what other people in the gang are doing and saying. Since the mid 1970 s there has been economic and social transformation in the economy in terms of specific form of urban labor (Sassen, 246). Sassen states that, Such shifts directly affect the mix of job characteristics, including earnings levels and employment stability, and the types of careers available to local workers (Sassen , 246). The new type of flexibility leads to an increase in flexible employment and precarious work. This means that there is an increase in part time jobs that include no regular scheduling, no set hours and can be highly unstable for the employee. With this also comes the rise of jobs paying under the poverty level. This affects different cities because workers under the poverty level can not maintain a middle class level of living, thus shaping the decline of the middle. Instead of having more areas of middle class structure there is an increase in the separation between high and low. An example of this can be seen throughout cities with the decrease in middle retail, which means that there is large separation between the retail to high end and low end, but not much in the middle. The practice of health care can be divided into two models in which a health professional may approach their patient. This includes the medical model, where the patient is only viewed as a syndrome, or the host of a disease, or the biopsychosocial model (BPS), which was developed by George L. Engel in 1977.1 The BPS model appreciates the person as a whole, having psychological and socio economic impacts on their health and adherence, as well as the ailment they may or may not be suffering from at any point in time.1 In the case of LH, where it is clear her health and wellbeing is being affected by her lifestyle, it would be more appropriate to approach the situation with the empathetic biopsychosocial model. The health professional is then able to understand LH s health and wellbeing by linking it to her social setting, namely her stress relatedly to her role as a single mother unstable living conditions. They can also appreciate her unwillingness to quit smoking if they connect it to the stress in her life. Understanding how LH s unemployment, homelessness and parenthood affects her ability to adopt good health care, can assist health professionals in developing an individualised health care plan for LH. Hammurabi of Babylon introduced his code centuries apart from Moses and his laws for the Hebrews; however, there are similarities shared between the two. Several reasons can be distinguished as to what accounts for the comparison within each set of laws. Along with having an abundance of similarities, the differences shared between the two are also evident. To understand the similarities and differences analyzed in this essay, each set of laws will be compared regarding the treatment of parents, marriage, dishonesty in court, class systems, importance of agriculture, and the customs of each civilization. The time period, culture, and geographic location are responsible for the similarities and differences of Hammurabi s Code and The Law of Moses. To begin, Hammurabi s Code and The Mosaic Laws included that parents should be obeyed and respected. This is one characteristic that is shared between the rules. Because of the time in which Hammurabi and Moses lived in, it was not common to imagine a child disobeying his parents. People most likely thought that a child would always obey his parents, and that this shared law was accepted knowledge. • 24. The Impact Of Social Worker On Australian Society The role of the Social worker is varied as it involves the facilitation of change and empowerment of the individual through social, cultural and environmental influences. Between 1910 and 1970, the role of the social worker was significant due to the impact of the Stolen Generation on Australian society. The Stolen Generation was a dark period in the Australian history where many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were often taken without consent from their homes and families by the government, police and welfare authorities. The children were taken from their homes in order to try to civilize them by assimilation into white society (McCarthy 2000). The impacts of this period often resulted in severe psychological consequences for the children, the loss of identity, social isolation, depression, alcohol abuse and an increased level of violence. The role of the Social Worker was significant during this period as they were often involved with removing children from their homes and were also required to participate in the reconciliation process to improve the relationships between Indigenous peoples and the wider Australian community. One of the lasting effects of this practice is the distrust of indigenous people towards the social welfare profession. Traditionally, Social Workers are seen as human rights workers who advocate for the people to ensure equal access to all services by ensuring services are in place to meet human rights such as the right to ... Alas, the free lunch is now over and the CPU is facing the end of the easily obtained performance gains from Moore s Law. Another processing unit, the graphics processing unit (GPU), is also under the influence of Moore s Law. And as the graphical standards demanded by driving markets have consistently risen, the companies that produce the GPU have consistently delivered a product that was capable of meeting these standards. The GPU has grown efficient, if not more efficient than the CPU, at handling floating point calculations. Due to this, the GPU is no longer restricted to the graphics related industries and is seeing use in applications outside of graphical processing. Therefore, and an analysis of the graphical processing unit will be conducted. The focus will be on the history of the graphical processing unit, the tools that assist with the utilization of the GPU, and the impact that it has made in the field of parallel and high performance computing. Similar to the technologies that society has grown accustomed to, the GPU did not emerge onto the market as the sophisticated piece of hardware that it is currently. People began to realize that nothing was being achieved when religion was the only answer to anything and realised that you can have a good life before death. This resulted in a new lifestyle for civilians and a happier life. The fight for who was the cause of the greatest effect of the Scientific Revolution is an ongoing debate. Today I will be breaking down many people who put their foot forwards in a time of need and seeing who was the greatest. They will be put into a bracket starting with eight people on each side and within four tiers of battles (tier one being the first round of battles and tier four being the championship or fight for who had the biggest impact on The Scientific Revolution) there will be announced a winner. In the first clash of philosophers in the first tier we have Francis Bacon versus Robert Boyle. These two were matched together because of their involvement in early science. Francis Bacon was the developer of the Scientific Method, which is one of the most commonly used ways to figure anything out. Robert Boyle helped advance some things, but my verdict is that overall Francis Bacon was more successful in long term advancements so he wins. The next matchup of the first tier is Robert Hooke versus Joseph Priestly. They were matched together because of their significance of their discoveries, and how they ... As stated in an article from Body Image and Advertising, the average woman sees 400 to 600 advertisements per day and by the time she is 17 years old, she has received over 250,000 commercial messages through the media. While only 9% of advertisements have a direct statement about beauty, many more implicitly emphasize the importance of beauty particularly those that target both women and girls. (HealthyPlace) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Researchers who have done content analysis of girls magazines suggest that unrealistic beauty images and focus on traditional femininity may damage girls self esteem. (Melissa A. Milkie. 191). Upon years of looking in the mirror and not liking what they have seen, young women often become unhappy to the point of depression when comparing themselves to those with a more developed body image (Meg Kramer). Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest and affects how you feel, think, behave, and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. Statistics prove that the strongest risk factor for suicide is depression and 15% of those who are clinically depressed die by suicide (ANAD). Constant unhappiness with appearance can cause an individual to have a mental distortion of themselves thinking they are overweight or unattractive and can be perceived as problematic if the individual tries to fix themselves. The Culture of Tuscany during the Renaissance The culture of Tuscany during the renaissance was distinguished by its fine arts caused by the Roman Empire taking over of Constantinople, which brought Greek knowledge of math, science, architecture, and the arts to the Tuscan region. In this particular time period, (1429 1519) if it were not for the introduction of new understandings in math and science, the Tuscans would not have had the advancements in art and architecture we use to this day. To further expand on this topic, we must look into additional aspects of Tuscany s culture including geography, work, folkways, and religion. Tuscany is a fairly large region, compared to others in the middle left of Italy. It is surrounded by the Tyrrhenian sea to the southwest, and the Apennines along the northeastern border. Tuscany has a climate of extremes. It has all four seasons, but to extremes. It has very hot summers and fairly cold winters, along with general clouds but little rain, due to mostly the geography of its location. Most of the buildings had extreme mathematical alignments, in a grid fashion. Most of the buildings were made of Stone, Stucco and some clay. The streets were in two semicircles divided by the Arno River. The streets were aligned in a web pattern, surrounded by the mighty city walls.
