Es sind Bilder, die wir alle in uns tragen, ohne es zu ahnen. Bilder, die Laienaugen
bisweilen überfordern. Vor allem aber sind es Bilder von geradezu verstörender Schönheit.
Der Herr dieser Bilder ist Thomas Schmidt, und sein Schatz heißt medicalpicture. Doch
anstatt seine Reichtümer für sich zu behalten, stellt er sie ins Netz. Schon jetzt, vier Jahre
nach ihrer Gründung, hält die weltweit zugängliche Datenbank mehr als 100 000 exklusive
Bilder aus den Bereichen Gesundheit, Medizin und Pharma vor. Und täglich werden es mehr.
They are images that we all carry within, without realizing it. Images that laymen eyes find
overwhelming. Above all, however, images with an almost devastating beauty.
Thomas Schmidt (49) is master over these images, and his treasure trove is called medical-
picture. Instead of keeping his wealth all to himself, however, he has placed it on the net.
Already, four year's after setting it up, this worldwide accessible data bank contains over 100
000 exclusive pictures from the fields of health, medicine and pharmacy. The number
increases daily.

»Ich liebe meine Bilder«, sagt Schmidt. »Und meine Server.« In die-
ser Aussage steckt mehr als jene feine Ironie, mit der er der Unbill des
Lebens zu begegnen pflegt. Die verwirrende Ästhetik, wie sie so wohl
nur ein Ätz-Plastinat rot gefärbter Äderchen hervorbringen kann, ent-
zieht sich der oberflächlichen Betrachtung. Man mag sich ekeln vor
diesem Anblick – oder ihm verfallen. »Am liebsten würde ich eine Aus-
stellung mit unseren histopathologischen Bildern machen«, sagt
Schmidt. »Und die Bilder auf ein mal zwei Meter ziehen.« Die for-
schende, medizinische Fotografie erhebt er so zu dem, als was sie
eigentlich längst schon etabliert sein sollte: eine eigene Kunstform.
Dafür lieben ihn seine Fotografen. Und dafür liebt er sie.
»I love my pictures«, Schmidt says. »And my server.« This statement
contains more than just the refined irony with which he tries to
approach life's injustices. The confusing aesthetics, that can only be pro-
duced by something like corrosive, red-coloured little veins, demands
more than just a superficial glance. One might be disgusted by the sight
– or seduced. »I would love to do an exhibition of our histopathological
pictures,« Schmidt says. »And produce them as one by two metre prints.«
He elevates investigative, medical photography to a level where it should
have been placed long ago: to that of an art form. His photographers
love him for it. He loves them for it.
