Cost Of Living Wage
The 'living wage' determined by the Living Wage Foundation (LWF) can be defined as 'the hourly
wage rate which is necessary to allow workers and their families with an acceptable standard of
living' (Lawton and Pennycook, 2013). The LWF believe the current statuary national minimum
wage (NMW) is insufficient to meet workers basic needs. Currently the
'living wage' is an optional pay rate that, as of 2014, 1043 employers currently adopt.
(LWF,2014) The 2013 living wage for employees outside of London is set at £7.65, and for those
working within London at £8.80. This is set against the NMW for employees 21 and over which as
of 2013 was £6.31. Thus adding £1.34 and £2.49, respectively, per hour worked. The living wage
has been adopted by a large

High Medical Bills Should Not Reduce The Cost Of Living Essay
In 2007, nearly six million senior citizens in America faced the threat of hunger. Today more than
9.3 million seniors over the age of 60 are struggling with hunger and the numbers are continually
rising (Schilling, 2010). Many of our nation's seniors live on limited incomes and have tremendous
difficulty in making ends meet. Staples such as eggs, bread and milk costs are rapidly rising. Utility
costs are soaring. Many seniors are finding themselves paying more for medical care and many are
finding themselves in financial trouble and cannot keep up with the cost of living. Due to declining
health issues, high medical bills greatly reduces their income and some often find themselves
choosing between medication and food. Malnutrition is one of the greatest contributors to costly
hospital stays and nursing home admissions. In 2014, there were over 4,800 seniors in Scioto
County, Ohio over the age of 65 living below the poverty line and facing the threat of hunger
(Scioto County Commissioners, 2016). The Community Action Organization (CAO) of Scioto
County is an agency that is striving to alleviate the issue of hunger among the elderly in the
community by providing home delivered meals to individuals that are homebound through their
CAO Senior Nutrition Program (Community Action Organization of Scioto County, 2016). The
CAO of Scioto County Senior Nutrition Program has existed and been in operation since 1973
(Community Action Organization of Scioto County, 2016).

Effects Of The Cost Of Living In The 1950's
The traumatic way how the cost of living from the 1950's and the cost of living know really allows
people to see how much the world has changed over the years. In the 1950's the dollar value was
much different from it is known for example one dollar in the 1950's is about 9.50 in our time
period. Money really is a major effect of how the lives of those in the 1950's and the life people live
now in the 20th century. Could money really be a major effect of how people live know and how
they use to live? Is money really a major factor of how people live our lives day to day in today's
world or even in the 1950's? For example back in the 1950's the average income for a middle class
citizen was two thousand nine hundred ninety two dollars annually ... Show more content on

In the 1950's a normal middle class person would pay 75 dollars a month and would pay the home
for 15 years at max and the home value would be around 3,500 dollars. From paying 3,500 dollars
for a house in the 50's to now homes being from 99,000 dollars in poor communities to being up to 4
million dollars at a time in high end communities. Over the years homes have really been updated to
current laws and have gone up on prices since the 50's. Homes have dramatically gone from many
families being able to afford them to families now struggling just to put enough down payment for
them to have a reasonable monthly pay. Cars was another major thing that really hit big in the
1950's. From Frods, hotrods, nascars, and drag racing cars to these were the major cars that really hit
big during the 50's. Hot rods really changed the culture during the 50's after WWII ended hot rods
became even more popularly then when the war started. Cars were a major part of life for all those
people that lived during the 50's and cars were used for many things to such as movie drive–ins, fast
food foods and for cruising around. Cars were also very affordable during the 50's because many
families were able to have at least one car per family. Cars during the 50's didn't have really nothing
fancy, they just had the fuel gauge, oil gauge, and the tachometer compared to cars now a days that
have buletooth, installed invagation, montion censors, camreas inside and outside the cars and they
even have much more features than cars in the 50's. Gas

The True Cost Of Living
The True Cost of Living
Affordable Housing is a subject that every federal, state, and policy maker has to address. With high
homelessness rates, there has to be ways to provide affordable housing to those in need
(NationalHomeless.org). A family must have acceptable housing options to have a positive quality
of life. Land Bank defines affordability as, "A common measure of community–wide affordability is
the number of homes that a household with a certain percentage of median income can afford"
(CuyahogoLandBank.org.). Median incomes are calculated by household incomes and by
demographic groups. If a person is under this median income range they have difficulty affording
the housing within their communities.
Of course, there are several housing options available for individuals and families. For example, The
Department of Housing and Urban Development has income based programs like Section 8 and
Public Housing they offer on a limited basis. Non–profit programs like Neighborhood Works offer
foreclosure prevention counseling and some refinancing options. Even so, there are certain
drawbacks to these housing policies that are among these housing options. With the current housing
options open and in light of mediocre housing policies, there needs to be broader options for people
to choose from.
PART I
Acceptable affordable housing is lacking for low–income individuals and families. Without
adequate housing, individuals find themselves struggling financially, and many

Cost Of Living In America Research Paper
The pursuit of happiness is the American dream that immigrants envisioned. Immigrants crossed the
Atlantic Ocean in droves, as they pursed the copious amount of opportunities that were available to
them. Over time, the dream has been in a steady decline and ultimately soured into a nightmare for
Americans. The United States' debt is currently trillions of dollars and American households are also
in serious and debilitating debt with no chance at recovery. The cost of living in American has
escalated in recent years, but the minimum wage has not followed suit. As a result of the higher cost
of living, American people were forced to take out loans and credit cards to charge basic living
expenses. As an example, having a child costs around $250,000

Low Cost Of Living In Atlanta City
In recent years, some smaller cities have been able to compete with larger areas – such as New York
City and San Francisco – as places for entrepreneurs to start new businesses.
In the South, Atlanta has quickly become an attractive place for entrepreneurs with its low cost of
living, convenient transportation, available tech hubs, and diverse talent pool.
In fact, between 2000 and 2006, Atlanta's population grew by 20.5 percent, making it the fastest–

This has given the city a diverse feel much like larger metro areas that attract talent from all over the

What Is The Cost Of Living In American Society
Once upon a time in American society, this would have been completely possible. We live in a huge
nation, filled with resources and opportunity. People would go weeks on end without seeing their

is shrinking. My family likes to laugh and say that anywhere in the country we go, my dad will find

goes to show that you cannot escape the reality that people are around you. Not anymore. All of

to make pay scales in the companies based within the foreign country. The USA employee would

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF LIFE A neighbor who came from Mexico and being naturalized in the
US many years ago lacked adequate medical coverage after his retirement to cater for his ailing
conditions due to cancer of the bones. The lack of healthcare coverage for this nice old man was
painful. The thought of this (healthcare for all) void in the national system did not take long to
realize that health is life, its care is supporting life to live life. Universal healthcare is vital for every
citizen for the progress and sustenance of the country as a whole. Access to Healthcare should not be

This abuse would enable stretching of medical facilities and personals leading to physical and
manpower shortages. In 2009, Medicare payments to health care providers were almost 20% below
those paid out by private insurance. The pecuniary deficits to medical facilities will directly affect
the high standards of facilities and services the citizens are accustomed to. A Jan. 2014 study
published in Science found that of 10,000 uninsured Portland, Oregon residents who gained access
to Medicaid, 40% made more visits to emergency rooms. This is typical for humans when services
are cheap no one has hesitation to take advantage of it. However, these changes or effects will be
prevalent due to change in services but as the system gets matured this trend would subsidize. The

The cost of living is increasing more and more each day. Whether you are looking into purchasing a

they were a decade ago. One area I feel I absolutely must make every dollar of my income count is
groceries. When feeding myself, my husband, and four children my grocery bill can get pretty steep

Though many people prefer Sam's Club, another well–known wholesale store, I find that Costco

Cost Of Living In Australia
INTRODUCTION
When talking about living in other countries, it is always hard to check currencies and change the
money you are used to in your old country. Australia's actual currency is really strong and living in
Australia appear to be really expensive for foreigners. If the Aussie dollar is weak against your
country though, Australia will seem like a cheap country to live in. The biggest problem of
migrators is that they should understand that when living here and earning Australia money,
everything gets easier and cheaper.

From 2011 to now on, the prices have surely increased and tend to continually go higher. Shortages
of rental properties and continuous landlord rate rises have established surging rental costs in
Australia. Though the Australia's capital city certainly claims the most expensive rents in the
country, rental prices in Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide, with limited supply and growing
demand, are not far behind.
HEALTHCARE
Most expats living in Australia won't be permanent residents and therefore won't be able to qualify
for Medicare, the national universal health insurance coverage. Medicare is financed by individual
tax deductions, and allows permanent residents to take advantage of free comprehensive hospital
care, as well as highly subsidised or free doctor's consultations. Private health care costs in Australia
can be expensive – in some cases comprehensive care will cost more than 500 AUD per month –
and, unfortunately, there's no way for temporary residents to escape these fees.

Minimum Wage And The Cost Of Living Essay
Today we live in a society that tells us what and when we can do it, with the complex of living in the
United States which is supposed to be the land of the free. The cost of living now these days have
put those who only make minimum wage in poverty stricken situations, which now they have no
choice but to depend on the government to live. We either have to lower the cost of living so that
people can live a somewhat sustainable life, or raise the minimum wage so that we can afford the
cost of living that is provided to us.
Somethings got to give, it 's obvious that we cannot have both. "About 77.2 million people ages
sixteen and over worked for hourly wages in 2014, according to the US Department of Labor's
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). These workers make up 58.7 percent of the US workforce. People
earning the federal minimum wage or less (people earning less than the federal minimum wage are
not necessarily a violation of FLSA as there are exceptions) totaled 3 million in 2014, or 3.9 percent
of all hourly workers".
It's the glass half full concept tells us that we must want one thing and not the other then we have to
see that over time we will want things that is called "price indices", is we want satisfaction in the
things we buy which cost more, and if the prices are up for the things we buy and they do not get
better that is where we see that the cost of living goes up with it. More like a tix for tack scenario we
want nice things like anyone would. If the median

Overview of American Heroes Cost of Living Allowance Act
American Heroes Cola Act American Heroes Cola Act Introduction A House subcommittee had
made the moved Wednesday April 18, 2012 to remove a small bit of doubt regarding the cost–of–

automatic yearly increases that would actually start the beginning of next year. This paper will
provide a comprehensive overview of f HR 4142: The American Heroes Cost of Living Allowance
(COLA) Act. Part A: Legislation and Political Context: What is the "Elevator Speech" Overview?
The American Heroes COLAAct came into fruition on Wednesday April 19th, 2012. The House
Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs (DAMA) agreed to
pass two bills that affect veterans benefits. There is slight doubt that under present law, veterans are
getting the same COLA that is going to Social Security recipients. Once a year since 1983,
Legislature has voted for, and the sitting president has authorized, a bill that guarantees that
veterans' disability payment and survivors' dependency and security reimbursement increases on
Dec. 1 by the same percentage as Social Security. American Heroes Cola Act would requires the
Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs to automatically increase the rates of veterans'
disability income, compensation for dependents, clothing allowance, and reimbursement for
veterans surviving next of kin and children at the same rate that Social

The Cost Of Living Analysis
In The Cost of Living, Stephen Hall discusses the astronomical prices of cancer drugs, from those
that are proven to save lives, to those that may provide only another month and a half of decent life.
In America we have this idea that you cannot put a price on life, and this is the idea that Hall is
trying to throw out the window, in the most humanitarian way possible. For many types of cancers,
we have been using the same base drug (first line treatment) for ten years or even longer. As
companies find new drugs to fight the cancers, they hope that it will be the miracle drug that will
eradicate the cancer, but it usually isn't. When they reach this conclusion, instead of returning to the
chalkboard and continuing to work to improve the drug, they put the drug on the market as is, and
hope it will achieve something. Not only are they putting these drugs on the market but they put
price tags on them that would bankrupt anyone without some sort of third party payer. The
combination of all of these drugs make up what doctors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The best way that was mentioned in the article is by creating competition. Chronic myelogenous
leukemia (CML) is a cancer of the blood that about 5,000 Americans develop a year, according to
Hall. To stay alive, patients must take a drug continuously for years, and the cost of staying alive
ticks up quite rapidly. According to Hall, in 2001, when the first CML drugs came out, they cost
around $30,000 a year, by 2012, the cost of the same drug had risen to $92,000 a year, more than a
threefold increase. In South Korea they saw a way around this staggering price, competition. A
South Korean company developed a CML drug that achieved the same thing as the American
version and put the price at $21,500 a year, as a result competing CML drugs cost around $25,000 a
year in South Korea, a fraction of the American price

The Issue Of Pay And Cost Of Living
The issue of pay and cost of living have been important topics that have dominated the news lately.
Being an election year, candidates for the presidency have used this as a major campaign focus as
their hopes is to gain votes from individuals that see their pay stagnant, unequal or nonexistent.
Individuals would like to know they are making forward progress and have the ability to make a
wage that allows them to maintain a comfortable life. Issues such as working poor, decreasing
working hours and minimum wage have become important issues in the US economy. We will
examine the case study of Ikea and the evolution of wages that are being championed by companies
and the red tape seen within the government.
What are some risks and challenges IKEA is likely to face as a result of basing its minimum pay on
the living wage formula, rather than just legal requirements and the market rate? Companies have
come to understand that people are their most valuable asset. This is far removed from the processes
of the Industrial Age, when companies focused on their output and production and employee safety
was an afterthought and wages were kept low. Ikea has lead the charge and chose to increase the
minimum employee wages across the company based on the local cost of living. This based on the
MIT living wage calculator that takes into consideration certain factors such as food, housing, taxes
and transportation. The legal minimum wage set forth federally is $7.25, however

The Cost Of Living For A Single Adult With No Children
In the United States, the cost of living for a single adult with no children is an average of $28,474
every year (Career Trends, screen 1). This seems like a relatively low number, until the amount of
people living together increases. A family of six, two adults and four children, rises to an annual cost
of $82,900 (Career Trends, screen1). If an adult were to work full–time at minimum wage, they
would only be getting $15,080 per year from their employer (University of California, screen 1).
This amount of money is still about $14,000 short of how much it costs a single adult to live. In
recent discussions of minimum wage, many people argue about whether it should be raised or not.
Although the intentions to raise it are good, the outcome ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

More specifically, only about twenty–three percent of minimum wage workers live in poverty
(Economics 21, screen 1). Many of the people working minimum wages are astonishingly young; a
little over half are between the ages 16 to 24 (Desilver, screen 1). To make another point, sixty–four
percent of those working minimum wage only work part–time (Desilver, screen 1). With this
information it is easy to see that most of the minimum wage workers are young and working for
experience or to start paying for their own things. Unfortunately, if the minimum wage were to be
increased, many employees would start looking for higher skilled workers. As Sally Smith, CEO of
Buffalo Wild Wings, explains; "When you start paying $15 an hour, are you going to take a chance
on a 17–year–old who's never had a job before when you can find someone with more experience?"
(Perry, screen 1). The minimum wage is set for on–the–job training, and many employers feel that a
worker must prove their worth through not only training but working their way up to higher salaries.
If a worker has no skills to offer due to little–to–no past experience, employers will be less willing
to hire them for more money. Businesses cannot spend more on wages than they earn in revenue, so
they will have to make decisions on the types of workers they will want (Freiling, screen 1). The
amount of money workers get can be imagined as a ladder; minimum wage being the first step. As a

Increase In Ontario's Cost of Living Tied to Minimum Wage...
Research Question.
Should increases to Ontario's minimum wage be tied to the cost of living?
Minimum wage is something that maintains the stability of a states economy. Minimum wage is
regulated by the provincial government where the most minor of changes creates an exponential
ripple effect through both local and international economies. A minimum wage is the wage that is
able to provide not only for bare physical needs but also for preservation of efficiency of workers
plus some measure of education, health and other things. Like it's stated above, minimum wage has
ties to many other things other than income, such as: education, healthcare, economic statuses and
stability, worker efficiency and overall family life. Cost of living is ... Show more content on

Cost Of Living Scholarship Essay
I am writing to apply for a full cost–of–living scholarship to enable me to successfully complete my
second year in the Master's program in Development Studies at the Graduate Institute of
International and Development Studies.
I would like to start by expressing my gratitude. Attending a master's program at the Institute has
represented an incredible opportunity, and one I want to keep seizing without reservation. Despite
financial hardship and being a single mother, I have done what is necessary to further my studies,
professional career and family commitments with my daughter. But, definitely, I've been capable of
keeping doing it because of the scholarship and the special financial aid you granted me.
This first year, I committed myself ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I am doing my utmost to not let this affect my participation and the focus needed to gain as much as
I can from the program. However, without a full cost–living scholarship, I will keep facing financial
burdens that I faced this first year.
As a single parent receiving no child support, I have spent almost all my savings, and I pretend to
use this support to afford my studies, and my daughter living expenses while finding a part–time
job. My aim is not re–apply for the special aid and to find as soon as possible a job. Besides, I keep
cutting all expenses related to myself such as clothing and leisure. As you already know, due to the
rules that applied to my nationality I was able to start applying for a part–time job until this March.
Unfortunately, I have not been lucky yet. But I am not to give up.
I am not only perseverant but also the kind of person who believes in reciprocity. So, I am always
looking for ways to payback the help I receive. I have training, knowledge, and experience
performing administrative tasks, and I learn fast. So, if there is anything I could do to reimburse the
aid you kindly could give to us, I have the disposition to do

Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA)
Thank you for contacting me about the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). I appreciate knowing
your thoughts on this important issue. I understand how everyday cost of food, medicine, and utility
bills make it tough to make ends meet, especially for those with a fixed income. Under current law,
the COLA is based on the percent change in the average Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Urban
Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI–W, for the third quarter of the previous year to that of
the current year. The COLA becomes effective in December and is payable in January of the
following year. The Social Security Administration announced social security beneficiaries will not

The Importance Of Social Justice
Social Justice is a double edge sword. On one side everyone is treated equally and fairly with
sustainable life advantages. There is food, clean water, shelter, health care, education and a living
wage adequate to support and improve families' quality of life. On the other side, there is the reality
of economics, war, prejudice, environment, poverty, and political influences. As long as there is
corruption and greed these goals seem impossible to achieve. Food and clean water is a basic
necessity of human life. Access to quality, adequate, affordable food and clean water should be a
goal of every government. However, in many places that is not possible either due to drought or
destitution. In some areas the government uses food to control the population. Many lives are lost
due to starvation for no reason other than lack of government management. Affordable housing
should be available to everyone. There are many opportunities to renovate buildings to
accommodate housing. Programs that give the recipient the opportunity to participate in the process,
such as Habitat for Humanity, need to be supported. This process gives people the pride of
ownership. The expense and lack of funding is the main concern. A plan has to be made to find
affordable clean housing.
Health Care is a basic human need and needs to mandatory. Everyone should be entitled to
comprehensive health care, but how is that not only achieved, but also made affordable? There has

Consumer Price Index
EC 601 – Fall 2010

Consumer Price Index (CPI) According to Mankiw the Consumer Price Index is a measure of the
overall cost of the goods and services bought by a typical consumer. The Department of Labor's
subordinate branch the Bureau of Labor who is in charge of providing the Consumer Price Index of
states that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change over time in the
prices paid by urban consumers for a "market basket" of consumer goods and services. Some
background into how the Consumer Price Index came about. The Consumer Price Index was

If a consumer buys one product over another because of a price hike in the first product, chain–
weighted figures will capture this buying shift, while Core CPI will not (Barnes, n.d.). Core CPI will
continue measuring the price of the good as it rises, regardless of whether fewer people are
purchasing the product (Barnes, n.d.). The CPI represents all goods and services purchased for
consumption by the reference population (U or W) BLS has classified all expenditure items into
more than 200 categories, arranged into eight major groups ("Consumer price index," 2010). Major

Cost of living refers to the cost of maintaining a specific standard of living. Cost of living is a
changing life–element over time and is normally interpreted in the form of cost of living index.
Calculations pertaining cost of living are used in making comparisons between varying standards of
living distributed within different geographic regions. Purchasing power parity rates provides a
suitable solution towards finding accurate differences in cost of living between different locations.

Most of pension benefits, employment contracts, and government entitlement are entitled to Cost of
Living Adjustments (COLA) clause which is responsible for increasing payments based on changes
in the cost–of–living index (CPI) (Whittaker and Wayne, 2016). COLA interferes with the payments
and is also tied to the cost–of–living–index that normally vary based on geographic location of the
employee (Whittaker and Wayne, 2016).
Consumer price index is a crucial entity that influences cost of living adjustment. It is responsible in
measuring the changes that occur in the price level of the market basket of both consumer goods and
services normally purchased by households (Mulvey & Gengler, 2014). Market basket refers to the
fixed list of items that is involved in tracking the progress of inflation in a given economy or
specific market. Market basket is also regarded as a commodity bundle. Consumer Price Index is
dependent of the fluctuations which occur in the prices of the goods specified and involved in
market basket (Mulvey & Gengler, 2014). These sample of goods and services are intelligently
selected from the market for accurate market judgements when measuring the consumer price index.
Normally, the goods involved in these judgmental practices are the frequently bought items and
household goods. Close observations are

Will Social Security Exist In The Future
There are a lot of opinions on how or even if social security will exist in the future. In past years,
leading to today there have been many issues, causing everyone to worry about the future funding of
social security. The federal government needs to make changes on how social security is being
handled before it is to late and no retirees will be getting social security benefits. Below I discuss
several options that have been proposed to help the Social Security Trust Fund to get back to being
stable.
Every passing year, the amount of taxes we are paying for social security will not be able to cover a
lot of benefits and it will keep diminishing if nothing is done. The cash flow deficit from social
security also contributes to the public debt, due to the fact that the tax revenues will not be enough
to cover the expense. In the past when social security has an excess of cash flow, the federal
government would use the surplus for other federal spending, so in return it would credit the Social
security trust fund by issuing special government securities. The more debit the federal government
piles up, the worst the social security benefits will be for the current as well as the future retirees.
The unfunded liability for social security will just keep growing, and getting worse if something is
not done. One of the options that have been discussed, which can make a difference, is fixing the
cost–of–living adjustment (COLA). The COLA is based on an obsolete measure of

The High Cost Of Living In The Bay Area
In 2016 Mercury News listed San Francisco as the third most expensive place to live in the country.
Also in the top ten (number five) was the San Jose, Sunnyvale, and Santa Clara area in the South
Bay. The numbers helped to validate what our group believes, that it is very expensive to live here.
We chose to consider the problem of the high cost of living in the Bay Area and how it has affected
the area. Part of the reason that the housing in the Bay Area has become more expensive is an influx
of highly paid employees. As one of the main hubs for tech jobs in the world, the Bay Area attracts
small startups to huge companies such as Google. Mercury News reported that the average wage in
Santa Clara County is 59% above the national average ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a survey by Mercury News earlier this year (2017) sixteen percent (of 1000 people) listed housing
prices as the number one problem facing the Bay Area. This is most likely part of the reason that
more millennials are choosing to live at home with their parents in the Bay Area. In a report by NBC
News Bay Area, it was listed that 33.3% of millennials in the Bay Area live at home with their
parents. This number would be less shocking if there was a high amount of unemployment in the
Bay Area but this is not the case. The same article states that only 8.6% of millennials in the same
area are unemployed. Here Zillow provides us with another visual showing the housing affordability
in the bay area. As you can see most of the peninsula is incredibly difficult to afford. What is not
shown on this map is why some of the green areas are more affordable. These areas tend to be less
desirable places to live, whether they be less safe neighborhoods or difficult to commute to and
from. We looked at a variety of ways to help alleviate this cost. Since one of the main issues causing
high living costs in the Bay Area is shortage of housing one of the possible solutions could be
building more housing. Possible problems here are that San Francisco itself is not too big of a city
and in most cities of this type in the world the population density is increased by building tall
buildings –

In today's word many people can't provide for their families because of the economy so it's very
arduous to live to above the poverty level. If you look outside there are more homeless people then
compared to the 1990's as the world turns the struggles become more wonted. Low class workers
make minimum wages which isn't enough to contribute to a household because the cost of living is
very high. Others feel that a higher level of education the more stable life you will achieve. You
shouldn't have to get a degree to determine your job opportunity over years of experience. People
don't realize that getting degrees will increase your hourly rate but will put a significant amount of
debt on your name. The Federal Government should increase the wages to match living cost
therefore individuals won't have to live below the poverty line, people will be able to support
themselves to reduce government assistance , and the amount of consumer spending will increase
fairly . Poverty has always been one of America's issues of all time but has increase simultaneously.

only enough money to put a roof over their head. The stock market keeps crashing because of the
decreasing unemployment rate of the American people. Small businesses are fighting to stay open

As humans, it was necessary to live an active lifestyle when survival was a crucial aspect of life.
However, with modern day conveniences, a sedentary lifestyle seems much more effortless. It is
important to remember that an active lifestyle is essential to overall health and wellbeing, especially
for living a long and relatively pain free life throughout aging. Exercise is necessary for preventing
many diseases, such as coronary artery disease or CAD, as well as cancer and diabetes. Additionally,
staying active can have a positive effect on mental health, especially for those who suffer from
anxiety and/or depression. Despite the overwhelming evidence describing the positive benefits of
exercise, only around 20% of adults reach the physical activity health guidelines (Sharkey and
Gaskill). Living a sedentary lifestyle can be dangerous for your health, especially due to disease and
early mortality, but exercise also has a numerous amount of benefits that improves overall wellness.

can also decrease the chance of having a heart attack and prevent the narrowing of arteries in the

Cost Of Living Expenses On The United States Essay
Introduction: National effect: Nationally people have to pay a certain rate of tax. In an ideal world,
people would receive an annual pay rise from their employers to counteract rising taxes/energy/food
costs e.g. cost of living expenses. When this doesn't happen e.g. When there is or has been a
recession, this factor effects the amount of money the average person has in his/her pocket therefore,
businesses sales and profits fall. Few people achieved pay rises and with fuel and energy prices
rising, people have less 'pocket money' which effects sales and profits. They would show a drop in
money. National factors are, therefore, very important when considering starting up a business.
Political effect: The main political parties in the UK are Conservative, Labour and Lib Dem (Liberal
Democrat). A coalition government is formed when there isn't a single party that has gained a
majority of the voting. This was the case when the Conservatives and Lib Dem party went into a
coalition government in a previous election. Coalitions are tricky in that two sides of an argument
need to be considered before policy can be established. A compromise has to be made and this can
take time. This can lead to political instability/unrest. The government could be considered weak. A
weak government and therefore, the country it governs doesn't send out a good message to
businesses in that country or other countries wanting to invest in it. Meaning less investment in the
country which effects

The Cost Of Living By Carlos Fuentes
The Cost of Living
"The Cost of Living" by Carlos Fuentes, starts with Salvador Renteria and his wife Ana. Ana has
been in bed for two weeks and is very ill. Salvador comforts his wife while she is lying in bed. He
tells her not to worry and that she will get better soon. Salvador shows his love for his wife while
she is sick. "She asked Salvador to check her messages at the office, he told her that the office
wanted her to come in person to sign" (Fuentes 451). We can note from this that during this time
period medicine wasn 't very advanced. When someone needed highly advanced medicine, it was
very expensive and rare to get.
A shopkeeper tells Salvador that "Life en Espanol hadn 't arrived yet" (Fuentes 452). Carlos Fuentes
tells us this because he wants us to get the feel for the setting of the story. This also can stereotype
that the life in Mexico can prove to be economically difficult.
The story is focused in the mid–1950s during political corruptness. The setting is located in Mexico
City, Mexico. Carlos Fuentes expresses this because he wants us to get the feel for the setting of the
story. This also can stereotype that the life in Spanish can be economical hard. I believe that Carlos
chose this time era because he wanted people to see how life was the back then compared to how it
is today. The point of view takes us back in time to where medical treatment wasn 't available,
unlike today. Salvador leaves his house and is walking down the street when a young

Measuring the Cost of Living
Overview:
Last time we discussed the most important measure of economic well–being – real, per capita GDP.
Further, if we want to see how our economic well–being is changing over time, we can calculate
how real GDP is changing in percentage terms (for example, real GDP grew 4% last quarter).
Now, we turn our attention to another important measure of the economy.
We want to measure how the cost of living changes over time.
The main intuition here is that, over time, peoples' incomes and the prices of goods and services
increase. 30 years ago an ice cream sundae cost $1 and a typical economics professor earned
$35,000. Now, a (bad) ice cream sundae costs $4.50 and a typical economics professor ... Show

We have to figure out what a "typical" consumer buys. Imagine a shopping cart – you fill it up with
items that a typical consumer will purchase.
Step 2: Find the prices:
Now that we have our basket, we can track prices on the items in the cart and see how much it all
costs.
Step 3: Compute the cost of the basket:
Let's determine the cost of the basket from year to year
Step 4: Choose a base year, and compute the index:
Pick a year to serve as a benchmark – a comparison basket cost for all other years. We then can use
the cost in benchmark year (called a "base year") relative to the cost of the cart in the year we are
interested in to calculate a cost if living index.
Step 5: Compute the inflation rate:
This is easy: just calculate how the index changes from year to year in percentage terms.
To see these steps in action, consider the following example (from the textbook):
Step 1: Fix the basket:
Well, suppose that what we see consumers typically buying are 4 hot dogs and 2 hamburgers – that
is what is in their shopping cart...
Step 2: Find the price of each good in each year:
This is just observing prices every year...
Year: Price of hot dogs: Price of hamburgers:
2001 $1 $2
2002: $2 $3
2003: $3 $4
Step 3: Compute the cost of the basket in each year:
Let's see how much the stuff in the cart costs from year to year...
Year: Cost of basket:

Measuring the Cost of Living
Introduction
1931 – Year of Great Depression in the USA. But in spite of this fact some people contrived to earn
$80 000, it was famous baseball player Babe Ruth. Even the President Herberd Hoover had a lesser
salary of $75 000. When Ruth was asked if he thought it was right that his salary was higher than
President's he replied that he had a better year.
Year of 2007 describes a different picture. The average baseball player gets paid $4.8 million. We
consider the fact that the cost of living, products and services has grown in recent decades. But it
does not give us any explanation if Babe Ruth had a better standard of living than the average
baseball player now, because prices for goods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example one year pizza Margarita costs $10 and pizza Pepperoni costs $12, consumers will buy
more Margarita then Pepperoni. But the next year the price of pizza Margarita rises and Pepperoni's
price falls, in this way consumers will buy chipper pizza. But when computing CPI the number of
goods is fixed and in this way the index will show rise of the cost of living, but in reality the
increase is lower.
Introduction of new goods – since consumer have the variety of goods to buy every dollar becomes
more valuable. In reality introduction of new goods causes a decrease of the cost of living, but CPI
overstates real changes in the cost of living.
Unmeasured quality change – some types of goods and services improve their quality over time,
what increases its price. It is difficult to measure quality of the good or service that is why CPI is
overstated, because economists try to adjust the price to its quality.
The GDP Deflator versus the Consumer Price Index
Two measures of inflation – the GDP Deflator and CPI are usually move together, as it is shown on
the graph (http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2008/08/variation–on–the–gdpinflation–chart/) below. The
GDP Deflator reflects goods and services produced within the country and CPI reflects goods and
services consumed within a country.
The CPI increases if price of any imported good rises, but it happens vice versa with GDP Deflator.

Cost Of Living Wage

  • 1. Cost Of Living Wage The 'living wage' determined by the Living Wage Foundation (LWF) can be defined as 'the hourly wage rate which is necessary to allow workers and their families with an acceptable standard of living' (Lawton and Pennycook, 2013). The LWF believe the current statuary national minimum wage (NMW) is insufficient to meet workers basic needs. Currently the 'living wage' is an optional pay rate that, as of 2014, 1043 employers currently adopt. (LWF,2014) The 2013 living wage for employees outside of London is set at £7.65, and for those working within London at £8.80. This is set against the NMW for employees 21 and over which as of 2013 was £6.31. Thus adding £1.34 and £2.49, respectively, per hour worked. The living wage has been adopted by a large ... • 5. High Medical Bills Should Not Reduce The Cost Of Living Essay In 2007, nearly six million senior citizens in America faced the threat of hunger. Today more than 9.3 million seniors over the age of 60 are struggling with hunger and the numbers are continually rising (Schilling, 2010). Many of our nation's seniors live on limited incomes and have tremendous difficulty in making ends meet. Staples such as eggs, bread and milk costs are rapidly rising. Utility costs are soaring. Many seniors are finding themselves paying more for medical care and many are finding themselves in financial trouble and cannot keep up with the cost of living. Due to declining health issues, high medical bills greatly reduces their income and some often find themselves choosing between medication and food. Malnutrition is one of the greatest contributors to costly hospital stays and nursing home admissions. In 2014, there were over 4,800 seniors in Scioto County, Ohio over the age of 65 living below the poverty line and facing the threat of hunger (Scioto County Commissioners, 2016). The Community Action Organization (CAO) of Scioto County is an agency that is striving to alleviate the issue of hunger among the elderly in the community by providing home delivered meals to individuals that are homebound through their CAO Senior Nutrition Program (Community Action Organization of Scioto County, 2016). The CAO of Scioto County Senior Nutrition Program has existed and been in operation since 1973 (Community Action Organization of Scioto County, 2016). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Effects Of The Cost Of Living In The 1950's The traumatic way how the cost of living from the 1950's and the cost of living know really allows people to see how much the world has changed over the years. In the 1950's the dollar value was much different from it is known for example one dollar in the 1950's is about 9.50 in our time period. Money really is a major effect of how the lives of those in the 1950's and the life people live now in the 20th century. Could money really be a major effect of how people live know and how they use to live? Is money really a major factor of how people live our lives day to day in today's world or even in the 1950's? • 9. The True Cost Of Living The True Cost of Living Affordable Housing is a subject that every federal, state, and policy maker has to address. With high homelessness rates, there has to be ways to provide affordable housing to those in need (NationalHomeless.org). A family must have acceptable housing options to have a positive quality of life. Land Bank defines affordability as, "A common measure of community–wide affordability is the number of homes that a household with a certain percentage of median income can afford" (CuyahogoLandBank.org.). Median incomes are calculated by household incomes and by demographic groups. If a person is under this median income range they have difficulty affording the housing within their communities. Of course, there are several housing options available for individuals and families. For example, The Department of Housing and Urban Development has income based programs like Section 8 and Public Housing they offer on a limited basis. Non–profit programs like Neighborhood Works offer foreclosure prevention counseling and some refinancing options. Even so, there are certain drawbacks to these housing policies that are among these housing options. With the current housing options open and in light of mediocre housing policies, there needs to be broader options for people to choose from. PART I Acceptable affordable housing is lacking for low–income individuals and families. Without adequate housing, individuals find themselves struggling financially, and many ... • 11. Cost Of Living In America Research Paper The pursuit of happiness is the American dream that immigrants envisioned. Immigrants crossed the Atlantic Ocean in droves, as they pursed the copious amount of opportunities that were available to them. Over time, the dream has been in a steady decline and ultimately soured into a nightmare for Americans. The United States' debt is currently trillions of dollars and American households are also in serious and debilitating debt with no chance at recovery. The cost of living in American has escalated in recent years, but the minimum wage has not followed suit. As a result of the higher cost of living, American people were forced to take out loans and credit cards to charge basic living expenses. As an example, having a child costs around $250,000 ... • 13. Low Cost Of Living In Atlanta City In recent years, some smaller cities have been able to compete with larger areas – such as New York City and San Francisco – as places for entrepreneurs to start new businesses. In the South, Atlanta has quickly become an attractive place for entrepreneurs with its low cost of living, convenient transportation, available tech hubs, and diverse talent pool. In fact, between 2000 and 2006, Atlanta's population grew by 20.5 percent, making it the fastest– growing urban area in the country. This has given the city a diverse feel much like larger metro areas that attract talent from all over the world, says Gail Margolies Reid, a business consultant and author of the book "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Low Cost Startups." • 15. What Is The Cost Of Living In American Society Once upon a time in American society, this would have been completely possible. We live in a huge nation, filled with resources and opportunity. People would go weeks on end without seeing their neighbors, even. As technology progresses and the overall lifespan increases, our world, as they say, is shrinking. My family likes to laugh and say that anywhere in the country we go, my dad will find someone he knows to talk to. I have never seen it fail. Why do I bring this up, you ask? Because it goes to show that you cannot escape the reality that people are around you. Not anymore. All of those people are constantly influencing you, as well, whether you realize it or not. • 25. The Cost Of Living Is Increasing More And More Each Day The cost of living is increasing more and more each day. Whether you are looking into purchasing a new home or something as simple as buying gas for your vehicle, things are not as inexpensive as they were a decade ago. One area I feel I absolutely must make every dollar of my income count is groceries. When feeding myself, my husband, and four children my grocery bill can get pretty steep if I don't find good deals. My ideal place for groceries are wholesale stores, preferably Costco. Though many people prefer Sam's Club, another well–known wholesale store, I find that Costco offer's limited time sales and more healthy food choices. "Sam's Club started with a price advantage: Annual memberships are $45 and a shopping cart of 30 items rang up 7 percent lower than the total at Costco (321.43 vs $345.81)." • 29. Minimum Wage And The Cost Of Living Essay Today we live in a society that tells us what and when we can do it, with the complex of living in the United States which is supposed to be the land of the free. The cost of living now these days have put those who only make minimum wage in poverty stricken situations, which now they have no choice but to depend on the government to live. We either have to lower the cost of living so that people can live a somewhat sustainable life, or raise the minimum wage so that we can afford the cost of living that is provided to us. Somethings got to give, it 's obvious that we cannot have both. "About 77.2 million people ages sixteen and over worked for hourly wages in 2014, according to the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). These workers make up 58.7 percent of the US workforce. People earning the federal minimum wage or less (people earning less than the federal minimum wage are not necessarily a violation of FLSA as there are exceptions) totaled 3 million in 2014, or 3.9 percent of all hourly workers". It's the glass half full concept tells us that we must want one thing and not the other then we have to see that over time we will want things that is called "price indices", is we want satisfaction in the things we buy which cost more, and if the prices are up for the things we buy and they do not get better that is where we see that the cost of living goes up with it. The House Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs (DAMA) agreed to pass two bills that affect veterans benefits. There is slight doubt that under present law, veterans are getting the same COLA that is going to Social Security recipients. The Cost Of Living Analysis In The Cost of Living, Stephen Hall discusses the astronomical prices of cancer drugs, from those that are proven to save lives, to those that may provide only another month and a half of decent life. In America we have this idea that you cannot put a price on life, and this is the idea that Hall is trying to throw out the window, in the most humanitarian way possible. For many types of cancers, we have been using the same base drug (first line treatment) for ten years or even longer. As companies find new drugs to fight the cancers, they hope that it will be the miracle drug that will eradicate the cancer, but it usually isn't. When they reach this conclusion, instead of returning to the chalkboard and continuing to work to improve the drug, they put the drug on the market as is, and hope it will achieve something. Not only are they putting these drugs on the market but they put price tags on them that would bankrupt anyone without some sort of third party payer. In South Korea they saw a way around this staggering price, competition. Being an election year, candidates for the presidency have used this as a major campaign focus as their hopes is to gain votes from individuals that see their pay stagnant, unequal or nonexistent. Individuals would like to know they are making forward progress and have the ability to make a wage that allows them to maintain a comfortable life. Issues such as working poor, decreasing working hours and minimum wage have become important issues in the US economy. We will examine the case study of Ikea and the evolution of wages that are being championed by companies and the red tape seen within the government. What are some risks and challenges IKEA is likely to face as a result of basing its minimum pay on the living wage formula, rather than just legal requirements and the market rate? Companies have come to understand that people are their most valuable asset. This is far removed from the processes of the Industrial Age, when companies focused on their output and production and employee safety was an afterthought and wages were kept low. Ikea has lead the charge and chose to increase the minimum employee wages across the company based on the local cost of living. This based on the MIT living wage calculator that takes into consideration certain factors such as food, housing, taxes and transportation. • 37. The Cost Of Living For A Single Adult With No Children In the United States, the cost of living for a single adult with no children is an average of $28,474 every year (Career Trends, screen 1). This seems like a relatively low number, until the amount of people living together increases. A family of six, two adults and four children, rises to an annual cost of $82,900 (Career Trends, screen1). If an adult were to work full–time at minimum wage, they would only be getting $15,080 per year from their employer (University of California, screen 1). More specifically, only about twenty–three percent of minimum wage workers live in poverty (Economics 21, screen 1). Many of the people working minimum wages are astonishingly young; a little over half are between the ages 16 to 24 (Desilver, screen 1). To make another point, sixty–four percent of those working minimum wage only work part–time (Desilver, screen 1). With this information it is easy to see that most of the minimum wage workers are young and working for experience or to start paying for their own things. Unfortunately, if the minimum wage were to be increased, many employees would start looking for higher skilled workers. As Sally Smith, CEO of Buffalo Wild Wings, explains; "When you start paying $15 an hour, are you going to take a chance on a 17–year–old who's never had a job before when you can find someone with more experience?" (Perry, screen 1). The minimum wage is set for on–the–job training, and many employers feel that a worker must prove their worth through not only training but working their way up to higher salaries. If a worker has no skills to offer due to little–to–no past experience, employers will be less willing to hire them for more money. Businesses cannot spend more on wages than they earn in revenue, so they will have to make decisions on the types of workers they will want (Freiling, screen 1). • 55. Will Social Security Exist In The Future There are a lot of opinions on how or even if social security will exist in the future. In past years, leading to today there have been many issues, causing everyone to worry about the future funding of social security. The federal government needs to make changes on how social security is being handled before it is to late and no retirees will be getting social security benefits. Below I discuss several options that have been proposed to help the Social Security Trust Fund to get back to being stable. Every passing year, the amount of taxes we are paying for social security will not be able to cover a lot of benefits and it will keep diminishing if nothing is done. The cash flow deficit from social security also contributes to the public debt, due to the fact that the tax revenues will not be enough to cover the expense. In the past when social security has an excess of cash flow, the federal government would use the surplus for other federal spending, so in return it would credit the Social security trust fund by issuing special government securities. The more debit the federal government piles up, the worst the social security benefits will be for the current as well as the future retirees. The unfunded liability for social security will just keep growing, and getting worse if something is not done. One of the options that have been discussed, which can make a difference, is fixing the cost–of–living adjustment (COLA). The COLA is based on an obsolete measure of ... However, as time went on, doctors used new medical methods they learned from their experiences during World War I to begin saving lives back at home in the United States. Dr. Charles Christopher Cooke, otherwise known as "CC" was no exception. CC took his knowledge from saving lives on the battlefield to his home in Johnson County, Texas where he created a successful medical practice that he called the Meadowlawn Sanitarium. World War I was one of the bloodiest wars causing more than three hundred thousand casualties and out of those, one hundred twenty thousand of them resulted in death. • 63. Cost Of Living Research Paper As humans, it was necessary to live an active lifestyle when survival was a crucial aspect of life. However, with modern day conveniences, a sedentary lifestyle seems much more effortless. Exercise is necessary for preventing many diseases, such as coronary artery disease or CAD, as well as cancer and diabetes. Additionally, staying active can have a positive effect on mental health, especially for those who suffer from anxiety and/or depression. Despite the overwhelming evidence describing the positive benefits of exercise, only around 20% of adults reach the physical activity health guidelines (Sharkey and Gaskill). • 67. Case Study: the Overpaid Bank Teller Essay Problem: State Bank has over time increased salaries to tellers that were so high that of the 23 tellers at State Bank they were being paid over what other local tellers were being paid; additionally no other employees outside of the tellers were receiving an exceedingly higher salary based on the other local banks averages. All of this information was compiled in a report based on survey results taken from State Bank and the other local surrounding banks. Analysis: Now that this information has been reviewed State Bank determined that salaries would need to be modified or moving forward the salary structure would need to be modified for the tellers, according to the competitive data and based on what the ladder in salary was for all ... While those amounts maybe still be rather high; cutting back that 2% in raises and those costs of living increases can close that $26,000 overage, and make room for other incentives that are granted on a smaller scale, perhaps a quarterly bonus for employees that don't miss any unscheduled days off, or create teams within the bank that can challenge other teams in the bank for free items such as dinner & a movie, gift cards or other non–monetary incentives which could be sponsored by local businesses which could ultimately costs the bank nothing other than some publicity or employee awareness of those local businesses. Conclusion: Overall Duncan has done a fantastic job bringing the bank to place that other local banks model themselves after, however during the road to this great domain he failed to look at the potential costs associated with raises over time and merit increases staying reasonable. While others were meeting some marks for their level of service the tellers were going to always have an advantage because they are the core of the bank because the customers interact with them more regularly, the customers get to know them, making it easier to be more productive and positive, hence giving them an incentive to do great work every day. • 69. Cost Of Living Expenses On The United States Essay Introduction: National effect: Nationally people have to pay a certain rate of tax. In an ideal world, people would receive an annual pay rise from their employers to counteract rising taxes/energy/food costs e.g. cost of living expenses. When this doesn't happen e.g. When there is or has been a recession, this factor effects the amount of money the average person has in his/her pocket therefore, businesses sales and profits fall. Few people achieved pay rises and with fuel and energy prices rising, people have less 'pocket money' which effects sales and profits. They would show a drop in money. National factors are, therefore, very important when considering starting up a business. Political effect: The main political parties in the UK are Conservative, Labour and Lib Dem (Liberal Democrat). A coalition government is formed when there isn't a single party that has gained a majority of the voting. This was the case when the Conservatives and Lib Dem party went into a coalition government in a previous election. Coalitions are tricky in that two sides of an argument need to be considered before policy can be established. A compromise has to be made and this can take time. This can lead to political instability/unrest. The government could be considered weak. A weak government and therefore, the country it governs doesn't send out a good message to businesses in that country or other countries wanting to invest in it. Meaning less investment in the country which effects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. The Cost Of Living By Carlos Fuentes The Cost of Living "The Cost of Living" by Carlos Fuentes, starts with Salvador Renteria and his wife Ana. Ana has been in bed for two weeks and is very ill. Salvador comforts his wife while she is lying in bed. He tells her not to worry and that she will get better soon. Salvador shows his love for his wife while she is sick. "She asked Salvador to check her messages at the office, he told her that the office wanted her to come in person to sign" (Fuentes 451). We can note from this that during this time period medicine wasn 't very advanced. When someone needed highly advanced medicine, it was very expensive and rare to get. A shopkeeper tells Salvador that "Life en Espanol hadn 't arrived yet" (Fuentes 452). Carlos Fuentes tells us this because he wants us to get the feel for the setting of the story. This also can stereotype that the life in Mexico can prove to be economically difficult. The story is focused in the mid–1950s during political corruptness. The setting is located in Mexico City, Mexico. Carlos Fuentes expresses this because he wants us to get the feel for the setting of the story. This also can stereotype that the life in Spanish can be economical hard. I believe that Carlos chose this time era because he wanted people to see how life was the back then compared to how it is today. The point of view takes us back in time to where medical treatment wasn 't available, unlike today. Salvador leaves his house and is walking down the street when a young ... • 73. Cost of Living Measuring the Cost of Living Overview: Last time we discussed the most important measure of economic well–being – real, per capita GDP. Further, if we want to see how our economic well–being is changing over time, we can calculate how real GDP is changing in percentage terms (for example, real GDP grew 4% last quarter). Now, we turn our attention to another important measure of the economy. We want to measure how the cost of living changes over time. The main intuition here is that, over time, peoples' incomes and the prices of goods and services increase. 30 years ago an ice cream sundae cost $1 and a typical economics professor earned $35,000. Now, a (bad) ice cream sundae costs $4.50 and a typical economics professor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We have to figure out what a "typical" consumer buys. Imagine a shopping cart – you fill it up with items that a typical consumer will purchase. Step 2: Find the prices: Now that we have our basket, we can track prices on the items in the cart and see how much it all costs. Step 3: Compute the cost of the basket: Let's determine the cost of the basket from year to year Step 4: Choose a base year, and compute the index: Pick a year to serve as a benchmark – a comparison basket cost for all other years. We then can use the cost in benchmark year (called a "base year") relative to the cost of the cart in the year we are interested in to calculate a cost if living index. Step 5: Compute the inflation rate:
  • 74. This is easy: just calculate how the index changes from year to year in percentage terms. To see these steps in action, consider the following example (from the textbook): Step 1: Fix the basket: Well, suppose that what we see consumers typically buying are 4 hot dogs and 2 hamburgers – that is what is in their shopping cart... Step 2: Find the price of each good in each year: This is just observing prices every year... Year: Price of hot dogs: Price of hamburgers: 2001 $1 $2 2002: $2 $3 2003: $3 $4 Step 3: Compute the cost of the basket in each year: Let's see how much the stuff in the cart costs from year to year... • 78. Measuring the Cost of Living Chapter 24 Measuring the Cost of Living Introduction 1931 – Year of Great Depression in the USA. But in spite of this fact some people contrived to earn $80 000, it was famous baseball player Babe Ruth. Even the President Herberd Hoover had a lesser salary of $75 000. When Ruth was asked if he thought it was right that his salary was higher than President's he replied that he had a better year. Year of 2007 describes a different picture. The average baseball player gets paid $4.8 million. We consider the fact that the cost of living, products and services has grown in recent decades. But it does not give us any explanation if Babe Ruth had a better standard of living than the average baseball player now, because prices for goods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example one year pizza Margarita costs $10 and pizza Pepperoni costs $12, consumers will buy more Margarita then Pepperoni. But the next year the price of pizza Margarita rises and Pepperoni's price falls, in this way consumers will buy chipper pizza. But when computing CPI the number of goods is fixed and in this way the index will show rise of the cost of living, but in reality the increase is lower. Introduction of new goods – since consumer have the variety of goods to buy every dollar becomes more valuable. In reality introduction of new goods causes a decrease of the cost of living, but CPI overstates real changes in the cost of living. Unmeasured quality change – some types of goods and services improve their quality over time, what increases its price. It is difficult to measure quality of the good or service that is why CPI is overstated, because economists try to adjust the price to its quality. The GDP Deflator versus the Consumer Price Index Two measures of inflation – the GDP Deflator and CPI are usually move together, as it is shown on the graph (http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2008/08/variation–on–the–gdpinflation–chart/) below. The GDP Deflator reflects goods and services produced within the country and CPI reflects goods and services consumed within a country. The CPI increases if price of any imported good rises, but it happens vice versa with GDP Deflator. We can see it on the example of imported oil. When the price of oil raises the ...
