Outline Introduction
Topology Type
Bus Topology
Ring Topology
Star Topology
Mesh Topology
Tree Topology
Introduction
▶ A Network Topology is the physical and logical arrangement of nodes and connections in a
network.
▶ Physical Topology describes the layout of devices and cables, and Logical Topology
describes the way in which data is transmitted within the network- regardless of the physical
layout.
Network Topology
▶ Different types of network topologies
1) Bus topology
2) Ring topology
3) Star topology
4
) Tree topology
5) Mesh topology
Bus topology
▶ All data transmitted between nodes in
the network is transmitted over this
common transmission medium and is
able to be received by all nodes on the
network simultaneously.
▶ A signal containing the address of the
intended receiving machine travels
from a source machine in both direction
to all machines connected to the bus
until it finds the intended recipient.
Bus topology
Advantages
▶ Only one wire –Less
expensive.
▶ Suited for temporary network.
▶ Node failures does not affect
others.
Disadvantages
▶ Not fault to tolerant ( No
redundancy )
▶ Limited Cable length.
▶ No security.
Ring topology
▶ A ring topology is a bus
topology in a closed loop.
▶ Peer-to-peer LAN topology.
▶ T
wo connection : one to each
of its nearest neighbors.
▶ Unidirectional.
▶ Sending and receiving data
takes place the help of a
token.
Ring topology
Advantages
 Performance better than Bus
topology.
 Can cause bottleneck due to
weak links.
 All nodes with equal access.
Disadvantages
 Unidirectional. Single point of
failure will affect the whole
network.
 In load –in performance.
 No security.
Star topology
▶ Every node is connected to
a central node called a
hub or switch.
▶ Centralized Management.
▶ All traffic must pass through
the hub or switch.
Star topology
Advantages
▶ Easy to design and implement.
▶ Centralized administration.
▶ Scalable.
Disadvantages
▶ Single point of failure affects
whole network.
▶ Bottlenecks due to overloaded
switch/Hub.
▶ Increased cost due to switch/Hub.
Mesh topology
▶ Each node is directly connected to every other nodes in
the network.
▶ Fault tolerant and reliable.
Mesh topology
Advantage
▶ Fault tolerant.
▶ Reliable.
Disadvantage
▶ Issues with broadcasting
messages.
▶ Expensive and impractical
for large networks.
Tree topology
▶ computer networking, tree
topology isa type of network
topology that resembles a
tree. Tree typologies are
often used to create large
networks.
Tree topology
Advantages
▶ It can support a large number
of nodes.
▶ Itcan be easily expanded.
▶ Additionally, tree topologies
are highly scalable and can
be easily reconfigured.
used.
Disadvantages
▶ This network is very difficult to configure as
compared to the other networktopologies.
▶ The length of a segment is limited & the limit of
the segment depends on the type of cabling
▶ Due to the presence of a large number of nodes,
the network performance of tree topology
becomes a bit slow.
Thank you
