Hip Of Hip Hop Music
Hip Hops Redemption Hip hop music is described as, a subculture especially of inner city youths
who are typically devotees of rap music . (Merriam.com) Hip hop music is one of the most
listened to genres in history. Hip hop music started in the mid 1970 s, but some say that it
started much earlier. Many people today would argue that Hip Hop is disgraceful now a days,
and that it has no positive message given. Me personally, I would agree since the days have
changed over time. I could also argue that music as a whole has changed and wouldn t always be
the same, but that s not the main point. The main point is to show how Hip hop music is
actually positive. For starters, music has always been very special to people. Music can affect
people, even more than people affect people. Think about it, even in the bible days, Lucifer was
the ruler over music. God s most beautiful angel controlled music and the music set the tone in
heaven. Yes, music has a very strong impact on humans, animals, and deities out there. Hip Hop
is an awesome form of music. Hip Hop started off from poetry. Yes Langston Hughes would be
known as a lyricist in today s era. It was meant to express the troubles and sadness throughout the
lives of blacks. Hip Hop has gone through it s changed throughout time. As technology advanced
Hip hop has also advanced too an extent . Usually the older generation, when hearing todays Hip
hop musicwould say, How do you listen to all this

Canadian Minister And The Canadian Prime Minister
From 1896 to 1911 Sir Wilfrid Laurier served as the Canadian prime minister. This was a period
when Canada shifted from being agricultural to being proto industrial. It was also a period of
tremendous social and political tension in Canada. Laurier s ability to compromise between the
French and the English Canadians demands is what made him very successful and defined his time
as leader. These compromises are seen through the settlement of the ManitobaSchool Question in
1896, Canadas participation in the Boer War in 1899, and the Naval Service Act in 1910.
Before delving into the study, some background seems relevant. Canada was originally a rural
nation predominately made of farmers, loggers, fishermen, and fur traders; however in the late
19th century, the country saw a tremendous transformation of its society. By the early 20th
century, the majority of Canadians were living in urban towns or cities. They were also working
in service industries for the first time. Under the Industrial Revolution, the development of new
machines saw a dramatic growth in city based factory work while there was a reduced amount
of rural trades. Canada s raw natural resources were being processed into useful products such as
lumber, textiles, and meat. As a result, Canada became a more modern, and prosperous society
than before. Under the 15 year leadership of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada pursued policies that
created economic growth, and a rising standard of living for almost everyone in

Abolitionist Movements And Social Reforms
During the eighteenth century, the opposition to slavery prior to forming the United States became
increasingly stronger between the Northern and Southern territories. Prior to the 1830s, antislavery
societies began to emerge from every corner to challenge the slave system and to help combat
slavery. During this time, people had different ideas about how to confront the issue of slaveryin the
system and how to establish a freedom of oppression. In the eighteenth century, antislavery political
activists believed the slave system would able to be changed through peaceful political reforms,
while others felt that real change could only be achieved by violence. A radical white abolitionist
named John Brown became a historical figure whose beliefs motivated the violent abolitionist
crusade.
In the 1830s, antislavery underwent an important transformation which led to various abolitionist
movements and social reforms. The American Association Organization provided a program which
taught information about the gradual emancipation of slaves and exportation of the free to
colonies outside the U.S. In January 1831, William Loyd Garrison a successful writer played a
vital role in the initiation of the abolitionist crusade after he published the first issue, The Liberator,
which brought awareness of the importance of slavery emancipation. The issue not only helped to
give awareness to the issue of slavery, but it aided in the motivation of the abolitionist movements.

Essay on United States Government and Federalism
Over the last two centuries the United States has grappled with the idea of federalism. While former
President James Madison had a very concrete understanding of that form of governance, In the
compound republic of America, the power surrendered by the people is first divided between two
distinct governments, and then portion allotted to each subdivided among distinct and separate
departments (Madison, 1788, p. 67), the United Stateshas never had a conclusive division of power
between the state and the US Federal Governments. Instead of definitive spheres of governance as
Madison envisioned, over the years the US Federal Government has played an increasingly
important role in state matters. Beyond changes in the balance of power between... Show more

This case established the precedent that the United States Federal Government could dictate the
countries monetary policies. More importantly, during this period the supremacy of federal law
over state law was established with the Nullification Crisis of 1832. The ensuing conflict
established the precedent that the states did not have the right to judge the constitutionality of acts
of Congress. It was not until the American Civil Warand the resulting defeat of the Confederate
States of America that the supremacy of the US Federal Government in legislative and economic
matters was established.
Between the conclusion of the American Civil War and the election of President Franklin D.
Roosevelt, the United States entered a period of definitive dual federalism. During this period
fundamental governmental powers were shared between the federal and state governments, with
the states exercising the most important powers (Lowi Ginsberg Shepsle Ansolabehere, 2010, p.
73). While the US Federal Government left a majority of the decision making up to the states,
unlike before the Civil War, the supremacy of the Federal Government was no longer in question.
Although the government did establish various national standards during this period, it did little to
enforce compliance on the state level. For example, little was done to enforce the implementation
of the 15th amendment at the state

Genghis Khan and Qin Shi Huang Essay
Zhen Zou
History is an amazing thing, which can let us harvest experience, which can make us look back at
the past, which can get us to compare with now. You can also find some incredible coincidences.
However, there were some differences in these coincidences. In old China, there were two great
emperors who both unified China Qin Shi Huang and Genghis Khan. As founders of Dynasties, they
were powerful leaders, military geniuses and brutal rulers. But, Genghis Khan paid more attention
to wars and the expansion of territory, and Qin Shi Huang unified the currency, word and measures
while establishing centralization.
People widely recognized that even though Genghis Khan, whose military talent was strong, was
very cruel. According to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Qin Shi Huang is the best there ever was. After he defeated other countries with his army and
built the centralization, he unified the currency, word, and measures. From 475 BC to 221BC,
ancient China was divided into a collection of seven states that were constantly at war. By
221BC, Qin Shi Huang was able to bring the seven states under his control. After that, Qin Shi
Huang became the first emperor in Chinese history. According to the Encyclopedia of World
Biography, the author had particularly given us a point that Qin Shi Huang began a series of
reforms to consolidate his rule with the defeat complete and the establishment of his emperorship.
(Szczepanski) Thanks to Qin Shi Huang s political talent and sensible policies, those reforms
helped the Qin Dynasty restore the economy after war. In order to consolidate his rule, he reformed
by unifying currency, word, and measures. Even though he unified the Chinese characters in
writing, which promoted the development of culture, he also suppressed scholars who were not to
his liking. Consequently, many scholars involved were killed in the capital of the Qin Dynasty. In
spite of this, he still is the best there ever was.
All in all, these two powerful, talented, and brutal leaders promoted the development of Chinese
history. Comparing the two great emperors, Genghis Khan was so

The World s Biggest Trader
Introduction Accounting for 20 percent of global imports and exports, the European Union
(EU) is the world s biggest trader. This should not come as a surprise because free trade among
its members is one of the founding principles of the EU. With trade policy being in the exclusive
jurisdiction of the EU, this creates new market opportunities for European exporters, workers
and investors. The creation of this global market also creates the need for the EU to protect the
interest of its 28 members from serious injury by resolving trade issues that go far beyond tariffs.
The Safeguards Agreement (SG Agreement) sets forth the rules for application of Safeguard
measures pursuant to Article XIX of the Global Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994.
These measures are temporary, emergency actions resulting in import restrictions that a country is
allowed to impose on a product if imports of that product are or have the potentiality to cause a
serious injury to a domestic injury of a directly competitive product. Safeguards are one of three
types of contingent trade protection measures, along with anti dumping and countervailing
measures, available to WTO Members. Imagine Company X, who exports sneakers to a country
Y. If country X imports sneakers in numbers in such ways that it affects the level of sales for the
domestic producer of sneakers in Country Y. Country Y may consider implementing a raise in
tariffs on sneakers so that Country Y s domestic producers may keep

Predatory Lending and Inequality Essay
For many years, the American dream has been deteriorating for several reasons. Paul Krugman,
author of Confronting Inequality, blames the inequality of our income distribution. He explains
how and why the differences between wages of the poor and wealthy are a major conflict in today
s society. Constance M. Ruzich and A. J. Grant, authors of Predatory Lending and the Devouring of
the American Dream, argue that the downfall of the American dream has occurred because of
predatory lending acts. According to the authors, predatory lending and inequality play a very
significant role in the corruption of the American dream. Predatory lending has caused many
conflicts in the American society. Victims who fall for predatory lending are

Why is it so important and why has it caused the economy such agony? Americans, both wealthy
and poor, try their absolute best to maintain a decent lifestyle for their children so they may have
more open opportunities, especially during these difficult hardships. Many middle class
Americans are purchasing homes that they may not be able to afford. Why? Because they want
to make sure their children are living in a good neighborhood with a good school to receive an
education. This shows how the wealthy and poor have different standards of living in terms of
money management. This inequality connects back to predatory lending. People who purchase
homes over their budgets will have more income difficulties and financial problems. This is
likely to lead to subprime mortgages which, in an unfortunate turn, adds to the distress of the
economy. Paul Krugman, an economy professor at Princeton and op ed writer for the New York
Times, states in his essay, The lack of clear economic progress for lower and middle income
families is in itself an important reason to seek a more equal distribution of income. The inequality
within our present society has caused a ridiculous amount of misfortune and concern. Incomes are
unequal which raises questions as to who is living the better life and who is at a better advantage.
Krugman also mentions in his essay, Our unique lack of universal health care, all by itself puts

Classroom Observation Essay
As a perspective teacher, it is essential to do field work and observe a classroom in order to
acquire the ability to recognize different behaviors, procedures, and routines. Observing allows one
to witness fundamental learning strategies and child development firsthand. With that being said,
on October 24, 2017, I spent my first full day at P.S. 45, formally known as John Tyler. Upon my
entry into the school, I was assigned to room 213, which is a third grade classroom General
Education(General ED) classroom. Unfortunately, the cooperating teacher, Mrs. Jessica Diaz, was
not in class due to a mandated Professional Development (PD) meeting held for the third grade

Despite the disruptions, it is still important to note the dynamics and characteristics of this
classroom. Mrs. Diaz s room is filled with beautiful and vibrant pieces of chart paper that allow
the students to refer back to previous lessons. The various pieces of chart paper are exhibited
throughout the entire room and includes almost every academic concentration. Moreover, the
classroom is organized into centers that is separated by the library, math, reading, and writing
areas. All the centers are spread amongst the room with the library towards the back of the
classroom and the math center located towards the community area. The library center is rather
large and has several backrest throw pillows on the floor. This area is suitable towards the back of
the room due to its large proximity that enables the students to relax on the cushions and read a
book. The classroom is not organized in a traditional fashion either, but instead includes elements
from P.S. 45 s famous, flexible seating arrangements that have taken over a majority of the
classroom settings. Additionally, these seating arrangements include cushions, portable lap desks,
and a Starbucks countertop with stools. Notwithstanding, the classroom still contains traditional
desks that are organized by tables, where each child has an assigned seat and seat sack to keep
their materials. In this classroom, the organization and use of tools,

wise and powerful king name Dasharatha. King Dasharasha had three beautiful and intelligent
wifes. The first wife he married was named Kaushalya, and then he married his second wife

Masculinity In The Man From Snowy River
Lucas in her articles regarding Australian masculinity presented in cinemas suggests that the themes
of social perception and presentation of masculinity and maleness have been repeatedly used in
Australian cinemas (Lucas Page 138). She adds that images of masculinity in cinema may reflect
and maintain the dominant hegemonic masculinity, but as well may also challenge the dominant
concepts of masculinity (Lucas 139). A large number of Australian cinemas display standard
perspectives of masculinity, which promotes the binary impression of maleand maleness, which
includes logical, domination, violence or competition (Lucas page 139 140).
Lucas presents the reflection of masculinity in the Australian cinemas by drawing example from
The Man from Snowy River (I) , where she analyzes the conventional masculinity by narrating the
development of the male character in the movie characterized as young Jom Criag (Tom Burlinson)
who has to inherits knowledge and strengths from his father. During his journey to manhood after
his father s death, he meets another man through whom he learns survival skills, develop
friendship, win over his rebel and proclaim heroic status. Lucas promulgates through her analysis
that this movie reflects the dominant and hegemonic masculinity by presenting that a masculine
figure needs to adapt, be physically strong, and be determinant of his aspirations (Lucas page 140)
I have drawn examples from Thorpe s article, which has presented the elements of

Electric Car Research Paper
Introduction: The purpose for this research paper is to introduce and familiarize students with the
basic concepts and components of electric vehicles. In doing so, we will be able to give a better
and more detailed explanation of the luxurious Tesla Model S electric vehicle s components such as
the battery, its methods of charging and the types of motors that are implemented in the Model S,
and how the Model S sets itself apart from the rest of the competition, whether it be electric
vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, or vehicles that implement an internal combustion engineor even
the most fastest of racecars ever made such as the Mclaren F1.

As mentioned before, Model S owners are able to choose from different size battery packs which
are able to produce more output power and in turn have longer ranges of miles. The following are
the battery packs different sizes along with their range per miles, horsepower and top speed:
60 kWh with a range of 208 miles, 302 HP, and 120 top speed
70 kWh with a range of 230 miles, 315 HP, and 140 top speed
85 kWh with a range of 265 miles, 373 HP, and 140 top speed
90 kWh with a range of 253 miles, 691 HP, and 155 top speed
As you can see, the size of the battery does matter for the Tesla, the higher the power output, the
more horsepower, range in miles and top speed can be achieved. With these ratings, the Tesla model
S is able to compete with even the most efficient gas consuming vehicle given that the EPA
estimates the the Tesla s miles per range can be converted into a combined eighty nine miles per
gallon. The conversion between the Tesla s range in miles to miles per gallon just goes to show
that even an electric vehicle can be luxurious, sporty and friendly for the environment.

Example Of Masculinity In Beowulf
Beowulf is an Old English poem written somewhere between the eighth century and the tenth
century; the culture of Germanic times is depicted through varying concepts of masculinity that not
only describes their capability as a warrior, but also their aptitude as a leader. Beowulf shows of a
demon named Grendel attacking Heorot, and the king, Hrothgar, calls Beowulf, a warrior, for help
with the slaying of Grendel. Characteristics and qualities of leadership are directly linked to the
masculinity of the characters within Beowulf. The leaders in the prologue are demonstrated with
the aspects of masculinity through their strength and brutality. In Beowulf, a man demonstrates
his essential worth through evidence of masculinity as seen in Unferth s cowardice, Beowulf s
heroism, and Wiglaf s bravery. Unferth is considered less of a man because he is more intelligent
than masculine. He may be intelligent, but he is neither a strong warrior nor a brave one.
Beowulf recalls that fact that Unferth has been a warrior for Hrothgar the entire time that Grendel
has been attacking, and he has done nothing towards defeating the monster. Beowulf states, Now I
cannot recall / any fight you entered, Unferth, / that bears comparison. (lines 582 84) Unferth may
have been an intelligent man, but his lack of a high degree of masculinity causes his worth to be
lower than that of Beowulf or any other brave warrior. Unferth s inability to kill Grendel causes
Hrothgar and the other warriors

The School to Prison Pipeline
Four kids, each under the age of 18 were sentenced as adults for 6 11 years in prison before DNA
evidence proved them all innocent. You all probably remember Trayvon Martin, who was
walking home, pursued by a neighborhood watch captain for having a suspicious appearance,
and then fatally shot. You might know of Philando Castile, who was pulled over for a broken tail

Minimum sentencing combined with the war on drugs brought a scythe through the black
communities, literally cutting off men from their families, huge chunks just disappearing into the
prison systems for really long times. We re not only talking about fathers. We re talking about
fathers being put away with their sons with their brothers and with their cousins. So many
broken families. 72% of African Americans have or are being raised by a single parent. So who
is their positive role model? It s not their mother, she s away all day working double shifts. Its not
their father, he s in prison. It s not their teachers, not only are they white but they are also teaching
in impersonal over crowded schools. Suddenly African Americankids start looking up to
gangbangers who have nice cars, and nice clothes. This is why one in three African Americans
born in 2001 can expect to go to prison in their lifetime.
The odds are overwhelmingly stacked against African Americans. And because of this they feel a
sense of hopelessness for the future. As if there is nothing they could do to rise out of their realities.
And to a certain extent, this is true. Think about redlining. Think about the inequality in the
workplace. Think about unfair voting ratios between black and whites, diminishing the black voice.
Now combine this and the fact that African American

The Husband Loathes His Wife s Birthmark
I found the husband interesting because of the way he completely loathes his wife s birthmark. His
hatred seems to be a symbol of people who are not content in their wonderful situation. The husband
says that the wife s face would be flawless and beautiful if it were without the crimson birthmark.
He loathes this birthmark so much that he says it reminds him of sin and earthliness, opposed to
perfection and heavenliness. I find interest in the husbands character because of his hate towards a
little thing that can be covered with two fingers. This obsession makes me think that the husband
character is a representation of people who complain about a small imperfection, inconvenience, or
issue in their life. Near the beginning of the story,

The Scientific Revolution Essay
During the Scientific Revolution scientists such as Galileo, Copernicus, Descartes and Bacon
wrestled with questions about God, human aptitude, and the possibilities of understanding the
world. Eventually, the implications of the new scientific findings began to affect the way people
thought and behaved throughout Europe. Society began to question the authority of traditional
knowledge about the universe. This in turn, allowed them to question traditional views of the
state and social order. No longer was the world constructed as the somewhat simple Ptolemaic
Model suggested. The Earth for the first time became explicable and was no longer the center of
the universe. Many beliefs that had been held for hundreds of years now proved to be... Show more

The statement acts to justify his finding with the church and connect them to God. Copernicus
realized that the church would be quick to judge him, and possibly this is why he didn t publish
his theories until late in his life. His discoveries were not so much as important as were his
methods of observation and application of mathematics to explain the world. His methods of
discovery helped model the direction of science over the next hundred years.
Another important figure in the Scientific Revolution was Galileo Galilei. He was an Italian born
professor of mathematics who had a great interest in the workings of the universe. Galileo served as
a professor at the University of Padua, and it was during this time that he began to question the
accuracy of the Churches representation of the world. Galileo s approach towards knowledge was
much different then the afore mentioned Copernicus. Where as Copernicus presented his finding to
the mercy of the church, Galileo wrote his conclusions and left the Roman Catholic Church
interpret them as they chose. The very nature of his findings pitted him as an opponent of the
church.
The Earth was not the center of the universe. Galileo had seen far into the heavens with the
telescope he had designed and created an even more accurate mold of the universe. He trumpeted
his views everywhere, and condemned anyone who

Diverse Personal Encounters With Non State Armed Actors
Diverse personal encounters with non state armed actors animate my research agenda, and I
seek to discern the meaning of a picture formed by pieces of a puzzle collected during my years
of military service. As a peacekeeper in Kosovo, I witnessed how a random rifle shot could
spark a series of reprisals across invisible lines that separated villages. My soldiers and I were
almost powerless to stop them. On one hand, our legal mandate prevented our ability to take
direct action. One the other, we understood so little about our adversaries we did not fully know
which action to take. Subsequent experiences leading soldiers during counterinsurgency efforts in
both Iraq and Afghanistan immersed me again in the turmoil created by overlapping networks of
non state armed groups competing for economic, social, and political power. Each incident
revealed another piece of the puzzle, but the picture it formed remained unclear. I started to
wonder if the pieces actually fit, or if I was putting them together incorrectly. I intuitively sensed
the ascendant role of non state armed actors in Kosovo. However, my experiences in Iraq and
Afghanistan crystalized in me the desire to explore the broader political and social ramifications of
the rising influence of non state armed groups. I began to ponder the strategic impact of their
decisions and actions on the long term evolution of political institutions. What are the consequences

Setting in John SteinbeckВґs East of Eden
John Steinbeck s, East of Eden, is set in the Salinas Valley, a secluded area of Northern California.
The Salinas River runs through this beautiful, yet unforgiving land and provides fertility to the dry
land. While the valley has a rich geographical history spanning from sea, to forest, and then to the
present day valley, it is a difficult destination to find prosperity. Two dramatic mountain ranges
form the landscape of the valley that the author uses to exemplify the idea of good and evil. This
theme is further outlined by the strong personalities of characters Cathy, Aron, and Cal. Cathy
and Aron have opposing dispositions, similarly to Steinbeck s descriptions of the Santa Lucias
and the Gabilan mountains. In between the two peaks is the valley, where both good and evil
preside. Cal s personality mirrors this setting as he struggles internally between being good and
evil for most of his life. Steinbeck s emphasis on dramatic setting correlates directly to the
personalities of the main characters in order to outline the theme of conflict between good and
evil in East of Eden. Evilness and its conflict with goodness in East of Eden is emphasized in
setting by the Santa Lucia Mountains and in character by Cathy Ames. The mountains provoke a
sense of fright and terror in Steinbeck as he remarks, The Santa Lucias stood up against the sky to
the west and kept the valley from the open sea, and they were dark and brooding unfriendly and
dangerous... I always found myself a

The way that this works is exactly like any other syllabus, except each grade has a zero after the
normal grade, so if it was 93 for an A, it would be 930 for an A in this class. Also what I gathered
from this is that, the attendance policy is completely different than in high school. It states, no more
than three absences are allowed. For each absence beyond the third, your grade will be dropped
one step. For example, if you have been absent four times and have a B average, you will be
assigned a B .if you are not prepared for class, e.g. You have no rough draft on peer review day,
or if you have been consistently late for class, you will be counted absent. Also if you do not

Banning Cell Phone Use While Driving
When we are on the road wreck less driving can be caused by a number of situations, which
ultimately is all related to the driver being irresponsible. Many of us have witnessed drivers so
distracted by their cell phones that they often resemble drunk drivers and we ve all seen the
commercials of the distracted drivers who look down to read that one message and now suffer
permanent brain damage or have ended someone elses life.. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon
University used MRI brain scans to demonstrate that simply listening to a cell phone conversation
while driving results in a drastic decrease in brain activity focused on driving (Gershowitz 582).
A common misconception is the thought that hands free calling is safer than texting. This is very
much untrue, the actual act of having a conversation causes the driver to be distracted. Texting
while driving is more dangerous because texting requires cognitive functioning and requires the
driver to take his eyes off the road. Distracted drivers often weave between lanes or forget to
signal while driving; putting other drivers at risk while on the road. Recently, we have seen an

Keep Guns from Campuses
Dear Mortimer I am writing this paper to persuade you to rethink your position concerning the
preemption of firearms regulation regarding college campuses. All over the world violence
occurs when we least expect it. As the human race evolves, so does the technology we use. We
have acquired the ability to kill a man without being in his general vicinity. With just the slight
movement of my finger I can end someone s life. One small confrontation could lead to a terrible
travesty. In the United States alone, we have seen many shootings in educational buildings from
the students themselves. When you put guns in the hands of students, you are asking for death.
People may say it adds protection to people wearing guns, but what about the people without
them? I strongly believe that if this bill is allowed to continue we be seeing a large number of
shooting in buildings of education, which is unacceptable. One small miscommunication between
two armed students could start a firefight. Two students are staring at each other after a brutal
verbal attack. Other students are listening in on this awesome battle of wits . Then, a loud bang
and screams come from the courtyard of a magnificent building of education. The student on the
ground holding on to life by a thread didn t realize that his opponent was packing heat, and he
crossed the line for the last time. Breaking through all of the shooters self control and causing him
to draw a firearmthat he was legally allowed to have on

Sharpshooting Research Paper
The forest at Valley Forge National Historical Park has been over populated by White Tailed
Deer. With the Birth rate being higher that its Death rate the population has been rapidly growing
for decades. Since there s not enough food in the forest to feed whole population, the deer start to
move closer to where humans live and eat farm crops, garden vegetables, shrubs, and even trees.
This also causes an increase in automobile accidents as a result of more deerwandering near roads.
This overpopulation also means an expansion in the spread of disease because the deer carry ticks
and since there more deer, there more ticks.
A possible solution is sharpshooting. Some people may disagree with this saying that it s an
unnatural death. However

Alternative Sources Of Energy For Fossil Fuel
In this day and age, finding an alternate source of energy to fossil fuel is essential. Humans are
using up fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, faster than they can be made naturally. This means that
there will be a time when all of the fossil fuels will have been used to power . To prevent a world
without energy, many alternative sources have been harnessed. Six different pathways for energies
were found: solar power, biomass, geothermal power, hydropower, wind power, and nuclear power.
All of these are much better alternatives to fossil fuels, as they reduce carbon emissions. Carbon
dioxide is one of the greenhouse gasses in Earth s atmosphere, which when created in excess,
causes things such as global warming to occur. But when they are compared to each other, some
seem better than others in many different ways. Although wind and hydropower are both promising
alternative energies, wind power would be better for New Jersey, because it is space efficient,
relatively cheap, and the turbines can be placed almost anywhere.
Figure 1 in the diagram below, it simply shows how the wind turns the blades, which in turn help to
power the generator.
[Wind power would benefit New Jersey because it is space efficient.] Turbines are rarely seen on

My Reflection Of My Writing As A Portfolio
In my portfolio I will be including my first essay and second essay that I did for this class. I am
most proud of these essays not because I took my time on them but I know that I fixed what was
asked and made a lot of improvements on them. I believe I did meet the contract agreement that
we signed at the beginning of the quarter. Although, I did miss some days of class, more than I
expected, but even after that I feel like I kept up with my work in and outside of the classroom
and what was required. I enjoyed this class a lot because I was able to learn a lot about myself as
a learner and was able to work on my study habits. I learned a lot about how to read properly and
how reading aloud truly helps you as a writer and learner. I also became better at being able to
correct others essays without feeling guilty of what I was saying. At first I felt like I wasn t
going to be able to put as much time as I wanted in my outside of class work. But over the course,
I learned that I had to make it a priority and didn t have any other choice. I had to make it work
with my job schedule and use my time very wisely, which at first wasn t easy because I wasn t
really good at that. These past ten weeks, say that I m still working on my study/ work habits.
Recording my labor hours really helped me keep track of the fact the amount of hours I should be
putting in time into my study time. I learned that the easiest things are the biggest distractions to

Utopian Architecture Research Paper
Contemporary Utopia
Utopia ideals and projects are barely in the discussion of contemporary architecture projects and
articles. Does that mean utopian ideology and thinking are invalid in the settings of contemporary
cities? Utopian method to approach urban planning are rarely introduced in the current projects.
Currently, city planners and designers seem to have no interest in understanding the relationship
between utopian thinking and urban planning. It all seems that the lack of interest in utopian
thinking in the present days are result of the evolution of time, as present days no longer has the
ability to be suited for bold thinking compared with preindustrial cities. Spaces are more defined by
social means, practical implications and urban ecologies.

If we want to live in a better city and are sustainable, we must use utopian architectural methods so
that planners can begin to think about the new possibilities of human life. The utopian city model is
to ensure the need for dreams, the need for mystery, and sometimes even the desire to create poetry
and construction. These projects are the means to escape monotonous life, and its continuation may
lead to boredom and frustration. Through Utopia s urban projects, humans can realize that the
material world is not static, but is in a state of continuous progress. By using the utopian method in
urban planning, our habitual values are confused and we enter the utmost and newly discovered
space of the utopia and have the opportunity to educate ourselves. We can find the power to inspire

Role Parents Play As Caregivers For Their Offspring
When one considers all the problems plaguing the world today, it is far too easy to idealize
previous civilizations as utopias where the problems of today were unknown to the relatively
carefree and altogether liberated individuals. Although their solutions to these problems may have
indeed differed, the ancient civilizations struggled with the same questions we continue to confront
in our modern world. One such problem is the role parents play as caregivers for their offspring.
Historically a female s function is to perform duties to maintain the home and nurture the children
whereas a male s role is to provide financial support. Today, the focus has shifted: the dysfunctional
familyhas disbanded and many women have begun to play both... Show more content on

It also helps that the theme is illustrated heavily by the fact that each of the five central male
characters Apollonius, Archistrates, Athenagora, Antiochus, and Stranguillio is described as having
exactly one child, and in every case it is a female child. By exploring the main relationships, it is
evident that the novel aims to describe the ideal relationship between a father and his daughter by
presenting to the reader varying degrees of closeness and interactions and their subsequent benefits
and consequences.
When a boy was born to an ancient Greek family, it was a source of celebration; the arrival of a
girl, however, did not result in as much happiness. Once a wife gave birth to a baby, its kyrios,
or guardian (usually the father or another male), decided whether or not to keep the child or to
expose it. Evidence proposes that girls were exposed more often than boys, although this is not
fully certain (Demand 1994, 6). If however the kyrios decided to raise the infant girl, it was
given a name on the fifth or seventh day after its birth during her amphidromia (Demand 8). The
girls often received the feminine version of the male names; by naming the girl, the males were
thus preparing her for the life under the continuous guardianship of a male. There was only one
instance when the family was pleased that they had a daughter: if there were no surviving males in
the oikos, the girl would then become an epikleros, an heiress to her father s estate and

Rocking Horse Winner and The Destructors Essays
Rocking Horse Winner and The Destructors
There are many differences and similarities between Graham Greene s The Destructors and D.H.
Lawrence s Rocking Horse Winner. One general difference is that in The Destructors the setting is
in Great Britain, after the bombing had happened during World War 1, when the buildings were
destroyed. The setting of Rocking Horse Winner is a suburban community located on the outskirts
of Baltimore, Maryland. This one distinct difference affects the entire background of each story.

The children in the story do not seem to be affected by this very much, since they have all pretty
much lived there entire lives like this, except T who comes from an upper class family but is
forced into poverty by the war. To him and the other boys in the story money seems to be of no
great significance. The awkward thing about the family in Rocking Horse Winner is that they all
maintain an upper class status even though they are short on money. This is hard on the family
especially the mother who can feel no love because of the stress that has been forced upon her
heart. The family still maintains there lifestyle as members of the upper class even though the line
of money continues to get shorter and shorter.
Money in each story is scarce, but how the characters in each story cope with this shortage is very
different. In Graham Greene s The Destructors the children know that they are not part of the upper
class but it has minimal affect to there ego or there self esteem. The need for money is not there. In
D.H. Lawrence s Rocking Horse Winner the affect is completely opposite. The family in Rocking
Horse Winner is part of the upper class but the money is not there to uphold this status for much
longer. This is known by the children but there is little or nothing they can do to help. The children

Geography In Ancient China
Geography
Geography plays a big role in ancient China. To start off, China is a very isolated country. The
location of ancient China is the eastern part of Asia. To be more specific, Bejing China is located
40 degrees north and 116 degrees east. Shanghai is located 31 degrees north and 122 degrees east.
Ancient China has many features that define it. For an example, it is built along two main rivers.
They are the Yellow River and the Yangtze river. But it also has mountain ranges, deserts, and
plains. The Grand Canal had a big role in ancient China. It was China s core economic and
agricultural region away from the Yellow River, valley in the north and toward the southern
provinces. The Great Wall of Chinaand the Forbidden City is China s most well know famous
architecture. They had to change the land to build these two famous structures. Citizens of ancient
China traded and got around to other countries by the Silk Road. Geography played a huge role in
ancient China.
Government In ancient China, government is very different then most countries. Instead of
presidents they have dynasty s. A dynasty is a line of hereditary rulers of a country. The shang
dynasty was responsible for the starting blocks of of chinese culture and civilization. The
steadiness of the country during the Shang Dynasty led up to many cultural advances such as
industrialized bronze casting, the calendar, religious rituals, and writing. The first king was Tang.

Nature And Scope Of The Issue
Nature and Scope of the Issue An unfortunate reality in today s society is the gross
overrepresentation of persons with mental illness in the criminal justice system. According to
Teplin (1984), persons with mental illness have been found to be almost twice as likely as
individuals without any known mental illness to be arrested for their behavior in similar situations.
Furthermore, several other studies have even shown that roughly half of all persons with a mental
illness have been arrested at least once in their lifetime (Solomon Draine, 1995; Walsh Bricourt,
2003). Although these statistics seem to further support the common belief among many citizens
that mentally ill persons are dangerous criminals, research indicates that the mentally ill are more
often arrested for nonviolent minor charges (Cuellar, Snowden, Ewing, 2007). Not surprisingly, a
considerable portion of individuals within the criminal justice population have a diagnosable
mental illness. According to Ditton (1999), 7% of federal inmates, 16% of state inmates, and 16%
of jail inmates have a mental illness. These percentages may be inflated because persons with
mental illness tend to spend longer periods of time in custody than those without a mental illness.
Perhaps the greatest indication of the brokenness of the system is the fact that there are more
mentally ill persons in jails and prisons today than in public psychiatric hospitals (Lamb Bachrach,
2001). In fact, according to the

Archeology Personal Statement
I can pinpoint my decision to pursue a career in archeology to a single day. I was touring the old
city of Quebec in the summer of 2012 and happened upon an archeological dig site that was being
opened to the public. It contained the foundations of some of the first houses built by the French
when they settled in Quebec. Pieces of shattered pottery and rusted coins were on display. I
marveled at the thought of unearthing something previously lost to history. When I began my high

I originally became interested in Dutch history after studying tulip mania in an Advanced

time period fascinates me. The Rembrandt Tulip, famous for its mosaic virus that causes a
multicolor effect of lines, was made popular after being featured in many paintings of the Dutch
masters. It was this fame that in part led to the drastic increase in the price of tulips. After studying

Philosophy And Principles Of Palliative Care
Discuss the philosophy and principles of palliative care
Palliative care
Palliative care is an approach that aims to improve the quality of life for a person and their family,
facing the problems associated with a life threatening illness. It is a multidisciplinary approach that
focuses on providing patients with relief from pain and other physical symptoms. It ensures the
client s comfort and dignity during the last days, weeks or months of their life and also involves
their psychological, spiritual and social needs.

They are responses to loss which most people will have but as grief is an individual experience,
not everyone will go through them all, or in the set order.
The carer has to respect the wishes of the dying person and their family, regarding conversations
about their condition that they do not want openly discussed or overheard. Carers must also respect
the person s wishes about who they want to be contacted and with whom they wish their
information to be shared.
This should be recorded and most importantly shared with all those who are caring for the
person. Some of those close to the dying person such as young children or elderly people may
also need physical or emotional support which will require consideration by the care team. The
religious and spiritual needs of the dying person, their family and friends will all have to be
considered and care staff will need to arrange the involvement of any religious leader if requested.
After death the care will concern the wellbeing of the bereaved family, carers and maybe other
service users who have got to know the deceased well.

ABSTRACT
Invasive procedures including chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis in sex linked diseases
increase the risk of fetal loss. Therefore, Noninvasive fetal gender determination using cell free
fetal DNA (cffDNA) in maternal plasma may be promising. Fifty pregnant women with
gestational age between sixth to tenth weeks were included. cffDNA were extracted from
maternal plasma and amplified by real time PCR and conventional PCR for detection of SRY,
DYS14 and DAZ genes as specific genetic markers for male bearing pregnancies. In general,
sensitivity and specificity of real time PCR was better than conventional PCR. However,
sensitivity of DYS14 gene and specificity of SRY gene by real time PCR was equal to those of
conventional PCR. Sensitivity of DYS14 gene was the highest and sensitivity of SRY gene was the
lowest. However, combination of the three Y chromosome sequences in the diagnosis increased the
test accuracy, which is suitable for clinical application.

Socrates, born in Athens in the 5th century BCE, marks a watershed in ancient Greek philosophy.

Creon Is The Tragic Hero Of Antigone
One might think Antigone is the tragic hero of her own story, but as the audience read in The
Burial at Thebes: A Version of Sophocles Antigone translated by Seamus Heaney, readers know that
she is not the tragic hero and learn the King is. The story starts after Polyneices and Eteocles
battled to the death. This Creonas next in line to take the crown. Creon buries Eteocles but leaves
Polyneices body to rot. Antigone wants to bury Polyneices, as a result, he goes the Underworld.
Based on Aristotle s definition, Creon is the tragic heroof Antigone because although he starts
from a position of greatness, his tragic flaws lead to a catastrophe; he realizes the error of his
ways, but it is too late to prevent the catastrophe; his downfall and suffering leave him humbled
and enlightened. First, based on Aristotle s definition, Creon is the tragic hero of Antigone
because although he starts from a position of greatness, his tragic flaw leads to Catastrophe.
Creon says And I, as next of kin to those dead and doomed,/ I m next in line./ The throne has
come to me (Heaney 15). This is the point where Creon says that he is king once again. That s
how guilt/ Affects some people./ They Simply break/ and everything comes out./ But the barefaced

The argument I chose to analyze was People Don t Actually Want Equality, They Want Fairness

work, but they did an experiment with these two children to clean up their rooms and was
rewarded with erasers, and there were only five erasers, so it was impossible to split the erasers
unless you give them both each two erasers and throw out the extra erasers or later give the extra
eraser to one of the children without the other child knowing. Or they would give three to one
child and two to the other child and explain why the child with the most erasers was rewarded
more because that child out of the two did the most work. The children were okay with inequality,

History of Gun Control in America
Introduction When it comes to controversial topics in today s society, there are so many that it can
be difficult to be a straight shooter. Among all of them, however, debate over gun control has been
prevalent for so long, it is something many people can easily set their sights on. It is an issue
everybody should have an opinion on, as it is vastly important, potentially threatening, and all too
present in modern society. Many find the mere concept of gun control invasive to their
constitutional rights, while others see lack of gun control to be astoundingly dangerous and entirely
chimerical. Protection of oneself and their rights may or may not be more important than hundreds
of lives lost potentially due to fairly unrestricted gun... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Increases in gun control were slight from then until the 1960 s, a decade bejeweled with peace
movements. Landmark events such as the emerge of vast controversy of America s war with
Vietnam and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy encouraged broad legislation in favor
of gun control. During this time period, Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson s seized advantage of the
nation s opinions, and won passage of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968
and the Gun Control Act of 1968 (History of Gun control Legislation 1). The latter became primary
law for regulating firearms, restricting felons, drug users, and the mentally ill from buying guns,
expanding gun dealers licensing and record keeping requirements, and raised the legal age for
purchasing handguns to 21.
Nearly two decades later, constituential opinions toward gun control saw a prominent shift,
displaying opposition of it. Congress passed the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, which
protected gun dealers whom were not found to be violating multiple codes from inspections by the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms more than once a year. The shift in opinion was not
unanimous though, and during the same year civilian ownership of machine guns built after May
19th of 1986 was banned. However, the law played no effect on firearms

The Character Analysis Of Ophelia From Shakespeare s Hamlet
This essay will pose as an analysis of Ophelia from Shakespeare s Hamlet. This play is a drama
and it takes place in the 16th century in Denmark. The central characters are Ophelia, Hamlet,
and Ophelia s brother Laertes and father Polonius. In this work, Ophelia is constantly influenced
by the opinions of those that surround her which causes her to become a prisoner to her own
thoughts. This drama was written as a depiction of how women conducted themselves during this
time and conformed to the standards of men. It was common for women to remain silent and
keep their thoughts to themselves, while males voiced their opinions. She was expected to
blindly obey the males in her life which doesn t allow her to learn, grow, and explore. In this essay,
I will provide a character analysis that will discuss Ophelia s rearing, obedience, and naГЇve stature.
Ophelia is a potential wife for Hamlet, but is unsure about herself being equip for marriage. The
author expresses this in the text with the quote, He hath, my lord, of late made many tenders of
his affection to me (1.3.586). When further analyzed, the quote displays Ophelia s feelings
towards Hamlet and him viewing her as a potential candidate to be his wife. She admires him
because of the affection he attempts to show her. However, her brother sees through Hamlets act.
Shakespeare states in the text I shall th effect of this good lesson keep . As watchman to my heart,

Heroin Problem

  • 2. Hip Of Hip Hop Music Hip Hops Redemption Hip hop music is described as, a subculture especially of inner city youths who are typically devotees of rap music . (Merriam.com) Hip hop music is one of the most listened to genres in history. Hip hop music started in the mid 1970 s, but some say that it started much earlier. Many people today would argue that Hip Hop is disgraceful now a days, and that it has no positive message given. Me personally, I would agree since the days have changed over time. I could also argue that music as a whole has changed and wouldn t always be the same, but that s not the main point. The main point is to show how Hip hop music is actually positive. For starters, music has always been very special to people. Music can affect people, even more than people affect people. Think about it, even in the bible days, Lucifer was the ruler over music. God s most beautiful angel controlled music and the music set the tone in heaven. Yes, music has a very strong impact on humans, animals, and deities out there. Hip Hop is an awesome form of music. Hip Hop started off from poetry. Yes Langston Hughes would be known as a lyricist in today s era. It was meant to express the troubles and sadness throughout the lives of blacks. Hip Hop has gone through it s changed throughout time. As technology advanced Hip hop has also advanced too an extent . Usually the older generation, when hearing todays Hip hop musicwould say, How do you listen to all this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Canadian Minister And The Canadian Prime Minister From 1896 to 1911 Sir Wilfrid Laurier served as the Canadian prime minister. This was a period when Canada shifted from being agricultural to being proto industrial. It was also a period of tremendous social and political tension in Canada. Laurier s ability to compromise between the French and the English Canadians demands is what made him very successful and defined his time as leader. These compromises are seen through the settlement of the ManitobaSchool Question in 1896, Canadas participation in the Boer War in 1899, and the Naval Service Act in 1910. Before delving into the study, some background seems relevant. Canada was originally a rural nation predominately made of farmers, loggers, fishermen, and fur traders; however in the late 19th century, the country saw a tremendous transformation of its society. By the early 20th century, the majority of Canadians were living in urban towns or cities. They were also working in service industries for the first time. Under the Industrial Revolution, the development of new machines saw a dramatic growth in city based factory work while there was a reduced amount of rural trades. Canada s raw natural resources were being processed into useful products such as lumber, textiles, and meat. As a result, Canada became a more modern, and prosperous society than before. Under the 15 year leadership of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada pursued policies that created economic growth, and a rising standard of living for almost everyone in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Abolitionist Movements And Social Reforms During the eighteenth century, the opposition to slavery prior to forming the United States became increasingly stronger between the Northern and Southern territories. Prior to the 1830s, antislavery societies began to emerge from every corner to challenge the slave system and to help combat slavery. During this time, people had different ideas about how to confront the issue of slaveryin the system and how to establish a freedom of oppression. In the eighteenth century, antislavery political activists believed the slave system would able to be changed through peaceful political reforms, while others felt that real change could only be achieved by violence. A radical white abolitionist named John Brown became a historical figure whose beliefs motivated the violent abolitionist crusade. In the 1830s, antislavery underwent an important transformation which led to various abolitionist movements and social reforms. The American Association Organization provided a program which taught information about the gradual emancipation of slaves and exportation of the free to colonies outside the U.S. In January 1831, William Loyd Garrison a successful writer played a vital role in the initiation of the abolitionist crusade after he published the first issue, The Liberator, which brought awareness of the importance of slavery emancipation. The issue not only helped to give awareness to the issue of slavery, but it aided in the motivation of the abolitionist movements. The goal of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay on United States Government and Federalism Over the last two centuries the United States has grappled with the idea of federalism. While former President James Madison had a very concrete understanding of that form of governance, In the compound republic of America, the power surrendered by the people is first divided between two distinct governments, and then portion allotted to each subdivided among distinct and separate departments (Madison, 1788, p. 67), the United Stateshas never had a conclusive division of power between the state and the US Federal Governments. Instead of definitive spheres of governance as Madison envisioned, over the years the US Federal Government has played an increasingly important role in state matters. Beyond changes in the balance of power between... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This case established the precedent that the United States Federal Government could dictate the countries monetary policies. More importantly, during this period the supremacy of federal law over state law was established with the Nullification Crisis of 1832. The ensuing conflict established the precedent that the states did not have the right to judge the constitutionality of acts of Congress. It was not until the American Civil Warand the resulting defeat of the Confederate States of America that the supremacy of the US Federal Government in legislative and economic matters was established. Between the conclusion of the American Civil War and the election of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the United States entered a period of definitive dual federalism. During this period fundamental governmental powers were shared between the federal and state governments, with the states exercising the most important powers (Lowi Ginsberg Shepsle Ansolabehere, 2010, p. 73). While the US Federal Government left a majority of the decision making up to the states, unlike before the Civil War, the supremacy of the Federal Government was no longer in question. Although the government did establish various national standards during this period, it did little to enforce compliance on the state level. For example, little was done to enforce the implementation of the 15th amendment at the state ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The World s Biggest Trader Introduction Accounting for 20 percent of global imports and exports, the European Union (EU) is the world s biggest trader. This should not come as a surprise because free trade among its members is one of the founding principles of the EU. With trade policy being in the exclusive jurisdiction of the EU, this creates new market opportunities for European exporters, workers and investors. The creation of this global market also creates the need for the EU to protect the interest of its 28 members from serious injury by resolving trade issues that go far beyond tariffs. The Safeguards Agreement (SG Agreement) sets forth the rules for application of Safeguard measures pursuant to Article XIX of the Global Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994. These measures are temporary, emergency actions resulting in import restrictions that a country is allowed to impose on a product if imports of that product are or have the potentiality to cause a serious injury to a domestic injury of a directly competitive product. Safeguards are one of three types of contingent trade protection measures, along with anti dumping and countervailing measures, available to WTO Members. Paul Krugman, author of Confronting Inequality, blames the inequality of our income distribution. He explains how and why the differences between wages of the poor and wealthy are a major conflict in today s society. Constance M. Ruzich and A. J. Grant, authors of Predatory Lending and the Devouring of the American Dream, argue that the downfall of the American dream has occurred because of predatory lending acts. Americans, both wealthy and poor, try their absolute best to maintain a decent lifestyle for their children so they may have more open opportunities, especially during these difficult hardships. Many middle class Americans are purchasing homes that they may not be able to afford. Why? Because they want to make sure their children are living in a good neighborhood with a good school to receive an education. This shows how the wealthy and poor have different standards of living in terms of money management. This inequality connects back to predatory lending. People who purchase homes over their budgets will have more income difficulties and financial problems. This is likely to lead to subprime mortgages which, in an unfortunate turn, adds to the distress of the economy. Paul Krugman, an economy professor at Princeton and op ed writer for the New York Times, states in his essay, The lack of clear economic progress for lower and middle income families is in itself an important reason to seek a more equal distribution of income. The inequality within our present society has caused a ridiculous amount of misfortune and concern. Incomes are unequal which raises questions as to who is living the better life and who is at a better advantage. Masculinity In The Man From Snowy River Lucas in her articles regarding Australian masculinity presented in cinemas suggests that the themes of social perception and presentation of masculinity and maleness have been repeatedly used in Australian cinemas (Lucas Page 138). She adds that images of masculinity in cinema may reflect and maintain the dominant hegemonic masculinity, but as well may also challenge the dominant concepts of masculinity (Lucas 139). A large number of Australian cinemas display standard perspectives of masculinity, which promotes the binary impression of maleand maleness, which includes logical, domination, violence or competition (Lucas page 139 140). Lucas presents the reflection of masculinity in the Australian cinemas by drawing example from The Man from Snowy River (I) , where she analyzes the conventional masculinity by narrating the development of the male character in the movie characterized as young Jom Criag (Tom Burlinson) who has to inherits knowledge and strengths from his father. • 13. Example Of Masculinity In Beowulf Beowulf is an Old English poem written somewhere between the eighth century and the tenth century; the culture of Germanic times is depicted through varying concepts of masculinity that not only describes their capability as a warrior, but also their aptitude as a leader. Beowulf shows of a demon named Grendel attacking Heorot, and the king, Hrothgar, calls Beowulf, a warrior, for help with the slaying of Grendel. Characteristics and qualities of leadership are directly linked to the masculinity of the characters within Beowulf. The leaders in the prologue are demonstrated with the aspects of masculinity through their strength and brutality. In Beowulf, a man demonstrates his essential worth through evidence of masculinity as seen in Unferth s cowardice, Beowulf s heroism, and Wiglaf s bravery. Unferth is considered less of a man because he is more intelligent than masculine. He may be intelligent, but he is neither a strong warrior nor a brave one. Beowulf recalls that fact that Unferth has been a warrior for Hrothgar the entire time that Grendel has been attacking, and he has done nothing towards defeating the monster. Beowulf states, Now I cannot recall / any fight you entered, Unferth, / that bears comparison. (lines 582 84) Unferth may have been an intelligent man, but his lack of a high degree of masculinity causes his worth to be lower than that of Beowulf or any other brave warrior. Eventually, the implications of the new scientific findings began to affect the way people thought and behaved throughout Europe. Society began to question the authority of traditional knowledge about the universe. This in turn, allowed them to question traditional views of the state and social order. His methods of discovery helped model the direction of science over the next hundred years. Another important figure in the Scientific Revolution was Galileo Galilei. He was an Italian born professor of mathematics who had a great interest in the workings of the universe. Galileo served as a professor at the University of Padua, and it was during this time that he began to question the accuracy of the Churches representation of the world. Galileo s approach towards knowledge was much different then the afore mentioned Copernicus. Diverse Personal Encounters With Non State Armed Actors Diverse personal encounters with non state armed actors animate my research agenda, and I seek to discern the meaning of a picture formed by pieces of a puzzle collected during my years of military service. As a peacekeeper in Kosovo, I witnessed how a random rifle shot could spark a series of reprisals across invisible lines that separated villages. My soldiers and I were almost powerless to stop them. On one hand, our legal mandate prevented our ability to take direct action. One the other, we understood so little about our adversaries we did not fully know which action to take. Subsequent experiences leading soldiers during counterinsurgency efforts in both Iraq and Afghanistan immersed me again in the turmoil created by overlapping networks of non state armed groups competing for economic, social, and political power. Each incident revealed another piece of the puzzle, but the picture it formed remained unclear. I started to wonder if the pieces actually fit, or if I was putting them together incorrectly. I intuitively sensed the ascendant role of non state armed actors in Kosovo. However, my experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan crystalized in me the desire to explore the broader political and social ramifications of the rising influence of non state armed groups. I began to ponder the strategic impact of their decisions and actions on the long term evolution of political institutions. The Salinas River runs through this beautiful, yet unforgiving land and provides fertility to the dry land. While the valley has a rich geographical history spanning from sea, to forest, and then to the present day valley, it is a difficult destination to find prosperity. Two dramatic mountain ranges form the landscape of the valley that the author uses to exemplify the idea of good and evil. This theme is further outlined by the strong personalities of characters Cathy, Aron, and Cal. Cathy and Aron have opposing dispositions, similarly to Steinbeck s descriptions of the Santa Lucias and the Gabilan mountains. In between the two peaks is the valley, where both good and evil preside. Cal s personality mirrors this setting as he struggles internally between being good and evil for most of his life. Steinbeck s emphasis on dramatic setting correlates directly to the personalities of the main characters in order to outline the theme of conflict between good and evil in East of Eden. Evilness and its conflict with goodness in East of Eden is emphasized in setting by the Santa Lucia Mountains and in character by Cathy Ames. Adams March. 20,2015 Banning Cell Phone Use While Driving When we are on the road wreck less driving can be caused by a number of situations, which ultimately is all related to the driver being irresponsible. Many of us have witnessed drivers so distracted by their cell phones that they often resemble drunk drivers and we ve all seen the commercials of the distracted drivers who look down to read that one message and now suffer permanent brain damage or have ended someone elses life.. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University used MRI brain scans to demonstrate that simply listening to a cell phone conversation while driving results in a drastic decrease in brain activity focused on driving (Gershowitz 582). A common misconception is the thought that hands free calling is safer than texting. This is very much untrue, the actual act of having a conversation causes the driver to be distracted. Texting while driving is more dangerous because texting requires cognitive functioning and requires the driver to take his eyes off the road. Distracted drivers often weave between lanes or forget to signal while driving; putting other drivers at risk while on the road. Recently, we have seen an increase in the concern over cell phone use while driving and an increase in legislation to prohibit this dangerous act. To prevent a world without energy, many alternative sources have been harnessed. Six different pathways for energies were found: solar power, biomass, geothermal power, hydropower, wind power, and nuclear power. All of these are much better alternatives to fossil fuels, as they reduce carbon emissions. Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gasses in Earth s atmosphere, which when created in excess, causes things such as global warming to occur. One such problem is the role parents play as caregivers for their offspring. It also helps that the theme is illustrated heavily by the fact that each of the five central male characters Apollonius, Archistrates, Athenagora, Antiochus, and Stranguillio is described as having exactly one child, and in every case it is a female child. By exploring the main relationships, it is evident that the novel aims to describe the ideal relationship between a father and his daughter by presenting to the reader varying degrees of closeness and interactions and their subsequent benefits and consequences. When a boy was born to an ancient Greek family, it was a source of celebration; the arrival of a girl, however, did not result in as much happiness. Once a wife gave birth to a baby, its kyrios, or guardian (usually the father or another male), decided whether or not to keep the child or to expose it. Evidence proposes that girls were exposed more often than boys, although this is not fully certain (Demand 1994, 6). If however the kyrios decided to raise the infant girl, it was given a name on the fifth or seventh day after its birth during her amphidromia (Demand 8). The girls often received the feminine version of the male names; by naming the girl, the males were thus preparing her for the life under the continuous guardianship of a male. There was only one instance when the family was pleased that they had a daughter: if there were no surviving males in the oikos, the girl would then become an epikleros, an heiress to her father s estate and ... The setting of Rocking Horse Winner is a suburban community located on the outskirts of Baltimore, Maryland. This one distinct difference affects the entire background of each story. To him and the other boys in the story money seems to be of no great significance. The awkward thing about the family in Rocking Horse Winner is that they all maintain an upper class status even though they are short on money. This is hard on the family especially the mother who can feel no love because of the stress that has been forced upon her heart. The family still maintains there lifestyle as members of the upper class even though the line of money continues to get shorter and shorter. Money in each story is scarce, but how the characters in each story cope with this shortage is very different. In Graham Greene s The Destructors the children know that they are not part of the upper class but it has minimal affect to there ego or there self esteem. The need for money is not there. In D.H. • 30. Nature And Scope Of The Issue Nature and Scope of the Issue An unfortunate reality in today s society is the gross overrepresentation of persons with mental illness in the criminal justice system. According to Teplin (1984), persons with mental illness have been found to be almost twice as likely as individuals without any known mental illness to be arrested for their behavior in similar situations. Furthermore, several other studies have even shown that roughly half of all persons with a mental illness have been arrested at least once in their lifetime (Solomon Draine, 1995; Walsh Bricourt, 2003). Although these statistics seem to further support the common belief among many citizens that mentally ill persons are dangerous criminals, research indicates that the mentally ill are more often arrested for nonviolent minor charges (Cuellar, Snowden, Ewing, 2007). Not surprisingly, a considerable portion of individuals within the criminal justice population have a diagnosable mental illness. According to Ditton (1999), 7% of federal inmates, 16% of state inmates, and 16% of jail inmates have a mental illness. These percentages may be inflated because persons with mental illness tend to spend longer periods of time in custody than those without a mental illness. Perhaps the greatest indication of the brokenness of the system is the fact that there are more mentally ill persons in jails and prisons today than in public psychiatric hospitals (Lamb Bachrach, 2001). In fact, according to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Archeology Personal Statement I can pinpoint my decision to pursue a career in archeology to a single day. I was touring the old city of Quebec in the summer of 2012 and happened upon an archeological dig site that was being opened to the public. It contained the foundations of some of the first houses built by the French when they settled in Quebec. Pieces of shattered pottery and rusted coins were on display. I marveled at the thought of unearthing something previously lost to history. When I began my high schoolcareer, I had the opportunity to be exposed to a range of social studies courses in and outside of my high school, all of which have reinforced my interest in history, and have provided me with a different perspective on history. Tulip mania was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which the price of tulip bulbs reached an astonishing high and then plummeted, causing the Netherlands market to crash. The connection between the economic crash in the Netherlands and art during the time period fascinates me. The Rembrandt Tulip, famous for its mosaic virus that causes a multicolor effect of lines, was made popular after being featured in many paintings of the Dutch masters. It was this fame that in part led to the drastic increase in the price of tulips. After studying tulip mania and visiting the Amsterdam/New Amsterdam exhibit at The Museum of the City of New York, the Dutch Golden Age and how it impacted colonial America has fascinated me. Therefore, Noninvasive fetal gender determination using cell free fetal DNA (cffDNA) in maternal plasma may be promising. Fifty pregnant women with gestational age between sixth to tenth weeks were included. cffDNA were extracted from maternal plasma and amplified by real time PCR and conventional PCR for detection of SRY, DYS14 and DAZ genes as specific genetic markers for male bearing pregnancies. In general, sensitivity and specificity of real time PCR was better than conventional PCR. However, sensitivity of DYS14 gene and specificity of SRY gene by real time PCR was equal to those of conventional PCR. Sensitivity of DYS14 gene was the highest and sensitivity of SRY gene was the lowest. However, combination of the three Y chromosome sequences in the diagnosis increased the test accuracy, which is suitable for clinical application. Creon Is The Tragic Hero Of Antigone One might think Antigone is the tragic hero of her own story, but as the audience read in The Burial at Thebes: A Version of Sophocles Antigone translated by Seamus Heaney, readers know that she is not the tragic hero and learn the King is. The story starts after Polyneices and Eteocles battled to the death. This Creonas next in line to take the crown. Creon buries Eteocles but leaves Polyneices body to rot. Antigone wants to bury Polyneices, as a result, he goes the Underworld. Based on Aristotle s definition, Creon is the tragic heroof Antigone because although he starts from a position of greatness, his tragic flaws lead to a catastrophe; he realizes the error of his ways, but it is too late to prevent the catastrophe; his downfall and suffering leave him humbled and enlightened. First, based on Aristotle s definition, Creon is the tragic hero of Antigone because although he starts from a position of greatness, his tragic flaw leads to Catastrophe. Creon says And I, as next of kin to those dead and doomed,/ I m next in line./ The throne has come to me (Heaney 15). This is the point where Creon says that he is king once again. That s how guilt/ Affects some people./ They Simply break/ and everything comes out./ But the barefaced ones./ The ones who defy you more when they re found out,/ They re worse again (Heaney 31). In this argument, Bloom writes about how people want fairness for the same work, but they did an experiment with these two children to clean up their rooms and was rewarded with erasers, and there were only five erasers, so it was impossible to split the erasers unless you give them both each two erasers and throw out the extra erasers or later give the extra eraser to one of the children without the other child knowing. Among all of them, however, debate over gun control has been prevalent for so long, it is something many people can easily set their sights on. It is an issue everybody should have an opinion on, as it is vastly important, potentially threatening, and all too present in modern society. Many find the mere concept of gun control invasive to their constitutional rights, while others see lack of gun control to be astoundingly dangerous and entirely chimerical. During this time period, Presidents Lyndon B. The latter became primary law for regulating firearms, restricting felons, drug users, and the mentally ill from buying guns, expanding gun dealers licensing and record keeping requirements, and raised the legal age for purchasing handguns to 21. Nearly two decades later, constituential opinions toward gun control saw a prominent shift, displaying opposition of it. Congress passed the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, which protected gun dealers whom were not found to be violating multiple codes from inspections by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms more than once a year. The shift in opinion was not unanimous though, and during the same year civilian ownership of machine guns built after May 19th of 1986 was banned. However, the law played no effect on firearms ... This play is a drama and it takes place in the 16th century in Denmark. The central characters are Ophelia, Hamlet, and Ophelia s brother Laertes and father Polonius. In this work, Ophelia is constantly influenced by the opinions of those that surround her which causes her to become a prisoner to her own thoughts. This drama was written as a depiction of how women conducted themselves during this time and conformed to the standards of men. It was common for women to remain silent and keep their thoughts to themselves, while males voiced their opinions. She was expected to blindly obey the males in her life which doesn t allow her to learn, grow, and explore. In this essay, I will provide a character analysis that will discuss Ophelia s rearing, obedience, and naГЇve stature.
