ABSTRACT
N. Bubnov (1858-after july 1939) became interested in Gerbert for the first time
during his postgraduate studies at the university of Petersburg, where he
published as a thesis his comments on Gerbert's letters (1888-1890) and
prepared an edition of the Gerberti Opera mathematica (Berlin, 1899). He
preserved this interest during ail the rest of his life, continuing his investigation
in many European libraries and was in correspondence with specialists (the
letters of P. Tannery, F. Lot and other scientists are conserved in the archives in
Kiev). Being professer at the university of Kiev (1891-1919), he propagated
Gerbert's heritage everywhere, even at the physico-mathematical Society as well
as by his private correspondence (letter to the pope, among others). During the
time where he lived in Ljubljana he continued the preparation of Gerbert's letters
and works with extended comments, compiled the manuscript in 2 volumes for
the French edition and sent it to J. Porcher, his collaborator, and to L. Halphen,
who was fairly interested in such an edition, while proposing to F. Lot some
variations for the French edition (which was never carried out).
