The Irish Potato Famine And Primary Sources
The Irish Potato Famine and Primary Sources
More than a million Irish people died during The Irish Potato famine that hit Ireland between 1845 to
1849 (Pollard, pg. 551). Potatoes were the primary diet of the Irish, especially the Irish Lump potato.
When the fungal disease hit, known as potato blight, the Irish potato crops were lost. After reading
primary sources regarding the Irish Potato Famine, the reader can visualize the horrors that the Irish
people endured during the Irish Potatoes Famine including starvation, the physical and the mental
effects that go along with it, the loss of family members, and especially witnessing their children
starve and die. Both Trench and Bennet had the purpose and intent of recording conditions ... Show

Trench s excerpt focused on the housing and the sad, upsetting state of the children to appeal to the
reader. He depicted the inequality between rich and poor illustrated by . .coffins are only used for the
more wealthy. The majority were taken to the grave without any coffin, and buried in their rags: in
some instances even the rags are taken from the corpse to cover some still living body.
Trench describes seeing children in the home near death and several other children that had died. He
describes the peasant children s condition as pale as death. The mother and two children that were still
alive had only one dish of barley for the last four days. Even though his descriptions of what he
witnessed may have been the truth and he was relaying this to the reader, he was known as a ruthless
land agent who broke leases, leveled people s homes and banished the poor. Trench looked upon such
schemes as a cheap and efficient way to improve the estate . . . the population decreased by 40.3 %
during the Trench years, suggesting that in an attempt to clear the estate to make way for
improvements, many people were forced to leave, receiving little or no money from him
(Offalyhistoryarchives.com). Critics said of Trench, Even at his worst he gave his tenants the care that
a good stock breeder gives to his stock (Irishtimes.com).

Importance Of Humanism In Thomas More s Utopia
Humanism was a movement that has influenced the Renaissance Era. According to Associate
Professor of Art History, Robert Baldwin, humanism is a culture produced by urban elites to cope
with...possibilities keenly experienced in the city...where divine reason ruled over base matter, mind
over body, intellect over the passions (1 2). The book Utopia, written by Thomas More, includes many
aspects of humanism in the society which plays a big role in the punishment of crime, greed of the
people, and the equality of its systems.
More states that in his contemporary society, the citizens were driven off their lands with no money,
and therefore they had to resort to stealing which was punishable by death. Consequently when
[people] grow up and commit the crimes that they were obviously destined to do... [the government
starts] punishing them (More 27). Although the people are punished severely, the number of crimes
committed are not diminishing because if death is the punishment of any crime then, if a thief [knew]
that a conviction for murder will get him in no more trouble than...theft, he s naturally impelled to kill
the person that he d...have robbed (More 29). The thief not only would have gotten rid of the only
witness, making it easier to conceal the crime, but also persuaded other thieves to kill their victims as
it would be advantageous. But in More s ideal society, a convicted thief has to return what he s stolen
to its owner... [and] is sentenced to hard labor where apart from having to work very long hours, he
has a perfectly comfortable life (30). Rather than killing a human being for taking an inanimate object,
they are given a second chance to correct their ways, so they don t repeat the crime they committed.
Also, they are treated more like people rather than monsters, so they are able to easily transition back
into society. Humanism advocates human rights of the individuals and justice and equality for
everyone, therefore humanists do not support the killing of human beings. Not only do the
punishments differ between the two societies, but greed as well. In More s current society, in Europe,
the government is corrupt and the people are poverty stricken due to the greed of the king. His

important composers, such as Alberto Ginastera, Olivier Messiaen, Riccardo Malipiero, Luigi
Dallapiccola, Bruno Maderna and Aaron Copland. The Variações Rítmicas Op.15 is one of the most
significant Nobre s composition from his second period. In this piece, Nobre explores serial
techniques and percussive elements. The piece is a mix of Brazilian native rhythms and dodecaphonic
music where Nobre explores the Brazilian percussion instruments. Besides the piano, Variações
Rítmicas Op. 15 requires eight typical Brazilian percussion instruments: cuíca aguda (a friction drum
which the performer plays with his hand inside the instrument), xocalho (maraca), afoxê (also known
as cabaça, it is a maraca covered with a network of beads), reco reco (a scraper also known as guiro),
five agogôs (cowbells), pandeiro (tambourine), tamborim (very small high pitched drum), and three
atabaques (conga drums). Nobre also wrote several other works that require percussion instruments,
such as the ballet Rhythmethron op. 27, composed exclusively for percussion instruments, Sonâncias I
op. 37, for piano and percussion; and Sonâncias III op. 49, for two pianos. Those pieces confirms
Bartók s influence on Nobre since he also composed a sonata for two piano and percussion, where he
explores a variety of popular rhythms from Hungary. The 20th century composers who have most
influenced me are Debussy, Bartók and Lutoslawski. These composers were capable of innovation in

Measuring the Melting Points of Compounds and Mixtures Essay
TECH0701: Measuring the Melting Points of Compounds and Mixtures
Introduction
This exercise dealt with the melting points of pure mandelic acid and benzoic acid. The eutectic
temperature and composition of mandelic and benzoic acid mixtures were determined. And finally, an
unknown was identified by its mixtures and melting point.
The melting point of a compound is used by organic chemists not only to identify the compound, but
also to establish its purity. To determine the melting point two temperatures were noted. The first was
the point at which the first drop of liquid formed among the crystals; the second was the point at
which the whole mass of crystals turned to a clear liquid. And the melting point was recorded from

An unknown compound was obtained and the ID number was recorded. A capillary tube was loaded
with the unknown powder and inserted into the melting apparatus. The temperatures at which the
crystals first started to liquefy and when the entire sample became liquid were recorded. The melting
point was then compared with previous known mixture samples to identify the unknown compound.

Essay Keynesian Economics
Macroeconomics is the branch of economics concerned with the aggregate, or overall, economy.
Macroeconomics deals with economic factors such as total national output and income,
unemployment, balance of payments, and the rate of inflation. It is distinct from microeconomics,
which is the study of the composition of output such as the supply and demand for individual goods
and services, the way they are traded in markets, and the pattern of their relative prices.
At the basis of macroeconomics is an understanding of what constitutes national output, or national
income, and the related concept of gross national product (GNP). The GNP is the total value of goods
and services produced in an economy during a given period of ... Show more content on

If, however, some rigidity prevented wages from falling to the point where supply and demand for
labor were at equilibrium, then unemployment could persist. Such an obstacle could be, for example,
trade union action to maintain minimum wages or minimum wage legislation.
Keynes s major innovation was to argue that persistent unemployment might be caused by a
deficiency in demand for production or services, rather than by a disequilibrium in the labor market.
Such a deficiency of demand could be explained by a failure of planned (intended) investment to
match planned (intended) savings. Savings constitute a leakage in the circular flow by which the
incomes earned in the course of producing goods or services are transferred back into demand for
other goods and services. A leakage in the circular flow of incomes would tend to reduce the level of
total demand. Real investment, known as capital formation (the production of machines, factories,
housing, and so on), has the opposite effect it is an injection into the circular flow relating income to
output and tends to raise the level of demand.
In the earlier classical models of unemployment, such as the one

How Easy Do You Think It Is for a New Chief Executive to...
The culture of an organization can be defined by the way they do things , this means the way they
make decisions, operate and how they choose and achieve their objectives. As culture is a set of values
and practices, changing it may be difficult and a long process, especially if the change is organized by
a new chief executive.
Changing the culture of an organization may not be easy especially if the new chief executive does not
fully understand the previous culture and therefore does not embrace it in the change. This lack of
knowledge may result in an inappropriate culture being chosen that could limit the company s
performance as productivity reduces. An example of a badly imposed culture can been seen with the

Although proposals to change the culture were made in 2007, Sony s culture has still not fully
transformed which is reflected in their still low competitively. Therefore, it may still take some time
for Sony to fully embrace an innovative culture as their Japanese culture has largely influenced the
organization. It also took a long time for Marks Spencer to introduce higher levels of technology, such
as a stock control system, as they are said to have a backward culture . This is because they don t
embrace change and are led by system and procedures. These examples provide evidence that change
in a business s culture may not be done quickly as the organization is accustomed to the previous
culture.
However, changing a company s culture can be easy if the new chief executive conducts the change in
an appropriate manner. As culture change will have a direct impact on stakeholders, it is important for
the new chief executive to inform all stakeholders of the changes and to also encourage feedback. The
loss of the innovative leader of Apple, Steve Jobbs created much anxiety about the new CEO Tim
Cook. Stakeholders feared Cook would change the company and reject all Jobbs practices especially
as the two leaders have different personalities. The media worsened the situation with continuous
negative press coverage which resulted

The Sheep Revolution in John Updike´s A P
At first glance, A P written by John Updike, looks like a funny, slangy, youthful story about a young,
nineteen year old boy, Sammy, who has the normal problems that come along with his age group;
abhorrence for his job, talking despondently about the older generation, and dreaming about girls he
sees in the store. However, when people look at the history of the 1960 s, they find it shows a change
in American social values and morals. Furthermore, the revolution of multiple groups of minorities
through the civil rights movement, such as women, gays, and African Americans just to name a few
who were at the forefront of issues during the 1960 s. Also, there was a revolt caused from the distrust
of politicians, and from the 1950 s family ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the biggest social groups that had some of the major impacts during the 1960 s were the youths
in America, consisting of late teens to the late twenties. However, others that fell into that age group
had already cemented their future with earlier choices in their lives. For example, the checker that
worked next to Sammy, his name was Stokesie, a young twenty two year old who was already married
with two children. Stokesie also holds the belief that he will become store manager someday, which fit
the mold of the start from the bottom and only with hard work can one move up style of the out dated
ideologies of the past decade. Stokesie represents everything from the 1950 s suburbiaism that the
youth revolution of the 1960 s was against. Many have argued that this story has a feminist undertone
to the main idea. Conceding, that going into public is a bit bold, especially for the time period shows
somewhat of a revolt by the girls. Although, someone can contend that if a girl or girls went into a
grocery store in a bikini during today s time, it would result in the same sort of reaction. One can also
argue that the story is condescending toward women and shows them in a negative light. Especially,
from the main character Sammy, with his description of the girls, also the nick names he gives the
three girls like Plaid, Big Tall Goony Goony, and Queenie. Moreover, the assumptions about how a

Where Aliens Came From
Many news of mysteries on our planet is still not yet clarified by experts to us. Some of this news are
about how Earth was formed and others are nature related. But most of the unexplained news is about
the aliens . Questions of where aliens came from? Why they are visiting our planet? Will they invade
us?
Many conspiracy theorists say that they have proof that aliens do visit and live on our planet. Some of
these proofs are the Madonna and Child painting, the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Nazca Lines, and
others. And just recently, another buzz of aliens stopover was seen by many circling around their area.

Energy Self-Sufficiency in Building through Photovoltaic...
Energy Self Sufficiency in Building through Photovoltaic Cells ABSTRACT Solar energy is a way to
acquire self sufficiency of many residential buildings. The different forms of solar cells made from
different materials and in different ways are able to increase the efficiency of the solar cells and allow
solar energy to become more widespread. Due to the possibility of a shortage of fossil fuels in the near
future, solar power can serve as an integral component in solving the energy crisis through developing
energy self sufficient buildings. However, after researching many already published materials, the
possibility of allowing the world s buildings to become self sufficient is not possible unless other solar

To cause a current to flow through the cells and create an electrical current, the semiconductor
incorporates a p n junction, which is when p type silicon is placed next to n type silicon. The electrons
will then flow towards the positive side of the solar cells instead of in random directions (see figure 1).
These semiconductors are usually made out of silicon, which, when in different forms can have
efficiency from 16% to 32%. The efficiency of a photovoltaic cell is measured by the ratio of the
amount of solar energy it converts to electrical energy to the total amount of solar energy that hits the
cell (Department of Energy 2004). Figure 1: The Photovoltaic Effect, Converting Light Energy to
Electrical Energy Source: Walker 2004 Photovoltaic Cells 4 The idea of photovoltaic cells is based on
Albert Einstein s photoelectric effect. The photoelectric effect describes the effect of certain energies
of light on different materials. Photons are able to dislodge electrons from the material when the
energy of the photons exceeds the energy needed to dislodge an electron from the material plus the
kinetic energy of electron. However, if the photon does not have enough energy, the electron is unable
to escape and remains in the material. Bell Labs first put these cells to use in

The Security Has Become A Hot Button Issue
National security has become a hot button issue here in the United States. Rather than representing
other nations, opposing forces represent different ideologies. Enemy personnel may appear as anyone
or come from anywhere, even from the United States. These enemies have a potential to acquire
dangerous weapons and cause detrimental amounts of damage to our nation. To save the country from
these extreme life threatening circumstances, where there is clear and specific evidence, torture is
ought to be reasonable so as to spare innocent lives. Most people in a civilized nation disagree with
torture. However, in compelling and threatening circumstances it may be allowed. Here is the reason,
Many terrorist organizations take advantage of the situation and make an entryway for an assault.
Without the usage of torture, it would take extra time and open doors for another strike later on.
Through the use of torture, the CIA gained useful data by interrogating two terrorist group leaders,
Khalid Sheik Mohammed and Abu Zubaydah, both of them gave significant data, after agents used
torture. (Gordon n.p.) Zubaydah showed the way to Khalid Mohammed, who was found to be the
mastermind behind 9 11 attacks. (Gordon n.p.) The usage of torture helped gain useful information
about terrorist organizations accountable for the assaults and it opened a way to stop possible assaults
driven by Al Qaida later on. (In Debate n.p.) Present and former U.S. authorities have claimed they

McQuarrie and Mick, 1996) do not adequately capture important differentiations within the visual
domain. After developing and illustrating the typology, we suggest avenues for empirical
investigation, specifying the particular cognitive processes that we expect to be differentially affected
by different categories of visual rhetorical figures. Among the more important contributions of the
typology is its demonstration of how concepts from art theory, semiotics and kindred disciplines can
be linked to concepts drawn from social cognition in a manner susceptible to empirical study.
A typology of visual rhetorical figures
Defining visual rhetoric in ads
We follow McQuarrie and Mick (1996) in defining a rhetorical figure as an artful deviation in form
that adheres to an identifiable template. Thus, the headline Can t say no to pistachio is a rhetorical
figure because it deviates in its arrangement of sounds from an ordinary sentence. However, readers
do not consider this deviation to be an error because they have encountered this kind of repetition of
syllables many times and have learned to treat it as a rhyme. Similarly, when readers encounter the
verbal pun Why weight for success? in an ad for the Diet Center, they understand it as a play on a
word with two meanings (i.e. weight and wait ). Because the number of templates is limited and
because consumers encounter the same template over

Deception And Trickery, Often Seen In Real Life, Is A Concept
Deception and trickery, often seen in real life, is a concept well portrayed in William Shakespeare s
Hamlet. In the play, as the conflict develops, Hamlet, King Claudius, and Ophelia, all use deception to
achieve their goals. Hamlet, being the main character, has many instances of deceit. He starts out by
feigning madness, then puts on a play to find out if the king killed his father, and finally switches out
papers, sending Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to their deaths. Hamlet meets with his dead father s
ghost and learns that Claudius killed the deceased king. Upon learning this, Hamlet says, How strange
or odd some er I bear myself (As I perchance hereafter shall think meet/ To put an antic disposition
on) (1.5.190 192). Here, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the play, Hamlet uses deceit and trickery to gain an advantage and achieve his goals.
Slightly differently, Polonius utilizes Ophelia in an attempt to deceive Hamlet. In trying to understand
what Hamlet is up to, Polonius makes Ophelia lie to Hamlet. Polonius says, Gracious, so please you/
we will bestow ourselves. (to Ophelia) Read on this book/ That show of such an exercise may colour/
Show your lonliness (3.1.43 46). Polonius wants Ophelia to find out what Hamlet is doing while he
and the king eavesdrop. Because Ophelia is required to listen to Polonius, she blatantly lies to Hamlet
in their ensuing conversation. Hamlet and Ophelia talk saying,
HAMLET. . . . Where s your father?
OPHELIA. At home, my lord.
HAMLET. Let the doors be shut upon him, that he may play the fool no where but in s own house.
Farewell. (3.1.141 144)
Through this conversation, Ophelia is forced to deceive Hamlet. However, Hamlet is not fooled. He
knows something is up and doesn t disclose any pertinent information. In a way, this could really be
considered Polonius s deception because he is the one really in control, not Ophelia. Either way, these
deceptions are important in building conflict, contributing to the need for a resolution. Lastly, King
Claudius uses deceit often throughout the play. The conflict of the story actually starts, or is caused by,

The Importance Of Mass Media Bias In The Media
1. Introduction
Having control over an entire country s population s opinion is a powerful thing to have. Possessing
that control would allow you to direct how the population spends their money or even who they like
and dislike in politics. The mainstream media news outlets have this control and are expected to give
us information that is unbiased, fair, and not meant to sway our opinion. The topic I will be exploring
is bias in the mainstream news media and how it affects their viewers. This is an important topic in the
field of communication because it has such a great impact on any country that uses mass media to
disseminate information. The information can be given to the viewers with a certain twist to
intentionally shape their view of an event, or it can be unintentionally bias just by the tone and manner
they are reporting on the event. I am going to research how mass media news outlets influence the
viewers opinion, and what goes into picking the news stories covered. These are controversial topics
to get into, but important to consider. They can have a very big impact on things like elections for a
political office, support or dislike of a certain group, or can sway your opinion of who is the hero in a
certain story. My sources will need to show specific examples of how the media is biased towards one
opinion, what the effects are from this, and who makes the determination of the bias that is being
displayed.

Alienation And Anomie Essay
Both concepts of alienation and anomie signify how individualism has impacted the social structures
through industrialization and the division of labour. Both Marx and Durkheim s theories emphasize
the relationships between people in society and how this impacts on separateness and individualism
within it; however, both theories are different. Where Marx is concerned he focuses on being alienated
as a result of materialized matter through the bourgeoisie alienating oneself from culture, for
Durkheim anomie is due to the lack of a collective conscience within society preventing both
regulation and integration of culture; for Durkheim this negatively impacts on social solidarity and
cohesion. Alienation occurred after the periods of slavery and serfdom arose a capitalist society,
workers selling their labour skills in order to earn a living wage. In comparison to feudal societies
where wealth was inherited, capitalist societies through the bourgeoisie was about owning the means
of production enabling them to own private property and this being wealth. However, the cost price of
the goods produced was significantly higher than the labourer s wages resulting in a profit for the
bourgeoisie, this being the method of attaining wealth. The capitalist mode of production generates its
wealth through exploitation of the proletariat. Karl Marx (1970) stated ...the accumulation of wealth at
one pole of society involves a simultaneous accumulation of poverty, labour torment, slavery,

The Black Eyed Peas Released A Single Titled, Where Is The...
In 2003, The Black Eyed Peas released a single titled, Where is the Love? which highlighted specific
issues in the past. Now in 2016, a remix similar towards the hit released 13 years ago appeals to
current issues around the world. Internationally anyone who had access to see the video saw the reality
that many didn t want to uncover back then. It s clear that the message can be picked out even without
viewing the video. The irrefutable acts of discrimination, hypocrisy, greed, violence, and crimes all
trace back to asking where is the love? Emotions evoked light to what officials wanted to bury, and
with a new single similar to it, individuals are now being informed about the current social issue of
police brutality. The purpose of this song is to highlight police brutality as a social issue, and how it
causes problems with racism, violence, and discord.
According to Will.I.Am he wrote this song to stimulate a detailed message to any listener who can
distinguish right from wrong. The concept of this song proves that the issue has always been around,
but there s a trend of it appears more often and no justice being served. The first version of the song
was written after the 9/11, and the reason being that cynicism was being formed toward officials and
the government. After the terrorism occurred a theme of ignorance came to selectively discriminate
against many Islamic individuals. The Black Eyed Peas asked, What s wrong with the world, mama

Isaac Asimov s Three Laws Of Robotics
1.1 Introduction to Robotics
Robotics is a branch of engineering that involves the conception, design, manufacture, and operation
of robot s. This field overlaps with electronics, computer science, artificial intelligence, mechatronics,
nanotechnology, and bioengineering.
Science fiction author Isaac Asimov is often given credit for being the first person to use the term
robotics in a short story composed in the 1940s. In the story, Asimov suggested three principles to
guide the behavior of robots and smart machines. Asimov s Three Laws of Robotics, as they are
called, have survived to the present:
1. Robots must never harm human beings.
2. Robots must follow instructions from humans without violating rule 1.
3. Robots must protect themselves without violating the other rules.
Robot is defined as a mechanical design that is capable of performing human tasks or behaving in a
human like manner. Building a robot requires expertise and complex programming. It s about building
systems and putting together motors, flame sensors and wires, among other important components. A

The Role Of Political Correctness In My Writing
Aiming to achieve political correctness within my own writing presents challenges, especially in
online classrooms without the benefit of relational capital. In other words, writing papers for a faceless
audience demands appropriate vocabulary to satisfy the rhetorical context of a written assignment
without sacrificing my authentic ideas, expression, and intentions. Considering how a reader may
perceive and interact with my content remains as top priority during the all three rounds of editing.
During the entire editing process, I use consult resources such as a reference books and other
educational text to identify jargon and determine if such terms either benefit or hinder a reader s
experience with my paper while attempting to adhere to political correctness (P.C.).
Once, I had to write a paper that compares a female, house slave s experience with a male, slave that
performed manual labor outside of the home. My writing challenges revolved around my audience
demographics. Because the audience comprised of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, I defined terms and avoided offensive language but my paper contained large sections
that diminished the horrors associated with slavery. After carefully considering my audience, sources,
and original intentions for making the comparisons, I deleted sentences with unclear and generic terms
to clarify and add meaning to my statements. Unfortunately, talking and reading about slavery
provokes negative emotions at times; however, editing empowers me to present inconvenient truths in
a respectful manner using language easily understood by a multicultural audience.
In summary, writing a politically correct paper, free from jargon, presents challenges for me while
developing my ability to make appropriate revisions without hiding an authentic message from readers
or confusing them in the process of reading my

Dropout Factory In Public Schools
America s public schools do not inhibit academic growth because the schools are dropout factories,
the proficiency is below what it should be, and teachers are not good. Dropout factories are a serious
problem with high schools. A dropout factory is a school with a high number of dropouts. Middle
schools feed poorly educated kids into high school. These kids are not ready for high school, so they
drop out. There are more then 60 percent of kids who do not make it from freshman to sophomore
year. There are over 1000 documented drop out factories in the United States. In one school, there
were 1,2000 freshmen, and the next year there were under 300 sophomores. Most of the kids have at
these schools had a third grade reading level. In one case,

The Number Of Mobile Cellular Networks Operators Who Can...
The work has been able to verify that the number of mobile cellular network operators who can
effectively share infrastructure on a base station is limited by the following parameters:
Sensitivity degradation threshold
E field threshold or radiation limit
Allowable BTS noise floor limit
Require antenna isolation
Interference level (from spurious emission, leakages, etc.)
Tower wind loading
From the result, it was observed that six (6) GSM operators can share infrastructure for a passive
infrastructure sharing scheme without severe and unacceptable degradation of system performance.
For number of BTS operators greater than six (6), the noise floor becomes larger than 110dB, which is
not acceptable. However, as the number of users of a tower increase, the wind loading and tower
bending moment increases. Therefore, when designing towers, wind loading analysis for collocation
scenario should be carried out.
Among the parameters, the level of sensitivity degradation should be monitored closely, since its value
aid in determining system performance for a specific interference level and BTS noise floor, which
depends on the number of collocating operators. When the sensitivity degradation is greater than 3dB
it indicates that the interference threshold is larger than the noise floor limit, which is temperature and
bandwidth dependent.
It was also observed that the higher the antenna gain, the longer the antenna separating distance.
The coverage radius is affected by

Labor Movement In The 1800s
Labor Movement During the late 1800 s America became involved in a large labor movement that
would shape history. As America was becoming more industrialized, the need for workers increased
overnight. The workplace was changing as machines became common and the demand for unskilled
workers brought new groups into the workforce including immigrants, women, and children
(Aboukhadijeh). The desperation from both employees and employers brought awareness to working
conditions. Employees desired better working conditions, increased wages, and decreased working
hours. Communicating with employers proved to be futile and fueled union movements. Union
members would go on strike to force companies to meet their demands. Sometimes it would work and
when it didn t, companies would lock out employees and bring in new workers to do the job. These
actions led to violent protests, riots, and arrests. The Pinkertons were hired as security by companies
during these trying times. Toward the end of the 19th century, the agency became more involved in
labor disputes, always on the side of management (Crawford). The Pinkertons were labeled as villains
by workers as blood was shed during these conflicts. Coal mining was one of the industries heavily
affected by the strikes in which the Pinkertons would become involved with. Working conditions were
already substandard due to the process of mining coal. Mine workers were exposed to safety hazards,
long working hours and inhaled toxic

Five Most Important Events in U.S. History
First thing that I chose for my project is, 9/11. This was a dark time for all of America at the time. 9/11
took place November 11, 2001. It was organized by 19 al Qaeda terrorists. The terrorists hijacked 4
commercial planes. Two of the four headed to the World Trade Center while the third headed for the
Pentagon. After learning the actions of the three planes, the fourth crash landed in an empty field
somewhere in Western Pennsylvania. This is considered the largest number of fatalities that were
caused by a foreign attack that happened on American soil which resulted in almost 3,000 deaths.
When the people of America found out the events, millions went to help fight and protect against
anymore attacks. Next I chose the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan project was a project that
brought the world into the nuclear age/era. In the year 1939, we learned that German physicians had
learned the secret to splitting the uranium atom. This was extraordinary. When Albert Einstein fled to
America, he brought information about the German s capability to create a bomb capable of mass
destruction. Einstein was accompanied by Erico Fermi, who escaped fascist Italy. The two thought
they should tell President Roosevelt. They wrote a letter to him urge him to establish an atomic
research project. Roosevelt agreed but didn t want everyone to know about it. He called it the
Manhattan Project. The main facility they built was in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Nearly two billion
dollars was invested

U.s. Military Policy Policies
Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States, began his presidency dealing with many
foreign policy issues left behind by his predecessor, George Bush. President Bush was unable to solve
many foreign policy problems faced by our country prior to leaving office. Some of these included the
wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Arab Israeli conflict, illegal immigration, and improving U.S.
relations with Cuba. President Obama was faced with the question of how to handle the number troops
in Iraq and Afghanistan and ultimately how to end or lessen U.S. military involvement in these
nations. Similar to other presidents, President Obama had to tackle improving the relationship between
Arabs and Israelis. He was also faced with the problem of how to handle illegal immigrants and
border patrol. A weak relationship between the U.S. and Cuba was another foreign policy issue that
President Obama was faced with having to improve. This is President Obama s last year as president.
Overall, he has done a decent job with foreign policy, excelling in some areas, and falling short in
others.
Background Information
Barack Hussein Obama was born on August 4th, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was elected the 44th
president of the United States of America in 2008, and won a Nobel Peace Prize in the following year.

share similar values. Norms can be put into 4 different types such as Folkways, Mores, Taboos, and
Laws. Folkways are defined as a way living while mores are basic rules to follow, taboos are a neglect
of law and laws are a set of guidelines enforced by the Bishop and the Church.

Blizzard Of 2016
1.0 Introduction
1.1 Aim
This report will investigate the USA blizzard of 2016 and about how it was caused, the social,
environmental and economic impacts that is cause and how the disaster was managed. The report will
make recommendations for the future management of blizzards.
1.2 Background
A blizzard is a type of atmospheric hazard and is a long lasting snow storm with intense snowfall and
strong winds. For a blizzard to form, warm air rising and moister is needed to create clouds for
precipitation to occur. As wind moves across a body of water (ocean, lake), some of the water
evaporates, putting water vapour into the air. Warm air rises over cold air by winds pulling the cold air
towards the equator from the North and South poles as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To prepare for the disaster people had to have enough food and supplies in case the inclement weather
knocks out heat, electricity and telephone service, such as a flashlight with extra batteries, a portable
radio, heating fuel, matches, extra blankets, candles and first aid supplies. It s important to stock up on
non perishable foods that are high energy foods (dried fruit, nuts and energy bars), canned products
and items not need refrigerated and a manual can opener and bottled water. People who live in
blizzard prone areas can build their houses with a sloped roof in order to avoid accumulation of snow
so instead it falls off and its import to protect water pipes from freezing. Insulting walls, attics, doors
and windows or they can install winter storm windows or cover windows with

Acculturation In Children
Previous studies showed participants were recruited from a charter school in Houston, Texas, between
2005 and 2009 and have revealed that higher levels of acculturation are related to obesity in
Latino/Hispanic adults. Conflicting findings exist regarding this relationship in children, and little is
known about the impact of acculturation on children s success in pediatric weight management
programs.
The purposes of the study were to (1) examine the relationship between acculturation and
overweight/obese weight status and (2) determine the impact of acculturation on the changes in weight
status among overweight/obese children 12 and 24 months after having participated in a weight
management intervention.
Methods: This is a secondary analysis of aggregated data from three randomized control trials that
occurred between 2005 and 2009. Height, weight, and level of acculturation using the Child Short
Scale for Hispanics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One, highly acculturated children likely have more influence from US media and literature. As noted
in the current study, 61.8 % of highly acculturated compared to 16.6 % of lowly acculturated children
preferred American (English) media or reading material. Also, 89.2 % of highly acculturated
compared to 59.4 % of lowly acculturated children lived in the USA their entire life, making the
likelihood of American media and literature exposure much higher in the highly acculturated group.
Children and adolescents are especially vulnerable to visual images as well as body image concepts in
the media and have a particularly difficult time distinguishing the difference between what is seen
versus reality and finally, stressful life events such as relocating children are difficult and often
traumatic, leading to challenges in school and behavioral

The Gate And The Courtyard Pass Without Notice
The gate and the courtyard pass without notice. His horse vanishes, presumably towards the stables
but he is oblivious to everything around him, fixated upon that one, indescribable scent that pulls him
towards Steve like a lodestone pointing north. It makes him feel...
Safe, and dry, surrounded by wiggly bodies that are warm and soft and falling over each other to
welcome the newcomer. He s small and his scent is weak but he holds himself firm as if he has
something to prove. The rest of his litter has succumbed to the fever and returned to the earth, but this
one has survived. They pile on their newest brother, rubbing and scenting and tasting until there is no
space between his scent and their own..
It smells like home.
The building can barely be called a keep, the stones old and cracked, ill fitting even when new. The
great hall never warms beyond chilly and some of the stronger gusts threaten to out every candle in
the place.
Bucky doesn t care.
Up, up, up the crooked steps, towards a heaven that Bucky has despaired of ever finding. The smell...
Still isn t strong but it s memorable, pine needles and sweat and anger and love. He finds Steve on the
cliffside, legs dangling defiantly and mouth twisted. Bucky wants to reassure him, some of them (us?)
are late bloomers, someone had to be first...
It smells like a lie.
It s stronger here, on the landing. Not quite as he remembers, deeper somehow, healthy at last. Honey
sweet and spice and notes of older things that

Technology Learning And Teaching Language
Technology in learning and teaching language
Introduction
The innovation of communication technology has had a major impact on teaching language and how it
is learnt, causing a major paradigm shift in authorship and how language is disseminated in a
community. This paper will critique the important issue on how language is related to technology and
these are the status of what is referred to as CALL (Computer assisted learning language), its cultural
influence, its effectiveness and theoretic overview. Additional to this, the paper will analyse the
findings of electronic literacy, research on how the technology in learning and teaching can have an
impact on the essence of teachers, and electronic telecommunication and tele collaboration.
Computer Assisted Learning Language (CALL)
According to Kern (2006), technology intensively changes and extends the levels and the breadth of
exposure that students and any other categories of learners can get in terms of a targeted language. As
a result, All approach of second language acquisition theorize on the essence of changes in the input of
technological changes in languages and the effect of learner s acquisition may have on the language
(Thomas and Reinders, 2010:47).
The article analyses two approaches of CALL, one that was formulated in 1997 and the other one in
2005.The one in 1997 holds that CALL can be defined as the study and the search for the use of
computer applications in the process of learning and the acquisition of

  • 2. The Irish Potato Famine And Primary Sources The Irish Potato Famine and Primary Sources More than a million Irish people died during The Irish Potato famine that hit Ireland between 1845 to 1849 (Pollard, pg. 551). Potatoes were the primary diet of the Irish, especially the Irish Lump potato. When the fungal disease hit, known as potato blight, the Irish potato crops were lost. After reading primary sources regarding the Irish Potato Famine, the reader can visualize the horrors that the Irish people endured during the Irish Potatoes Famine including starvation, the physical and the mental effects that go along with it, the loss of family members, and especially witnessing their children starve and die. Both Trench and Bennet had the purpose and intent of recording conditions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Trench s excerpt focused on the housing and the sad, upsetting state of the children to appeal to the reader. He depicted the inequality between rich and poor illustrated by . .coffins are only used for the more wealthy. The majority were taken to the grave without any coffin, and buried in their rags: in some instances even the rags are taken from the corpse to cover some still living body. Trench describes seeing children in the home near death and several other children that had died. He describes the peasant children s condition as pale as death. The mother and two children that were still alive had only one dish of barley for the last four days. Even though his descriptions of what he witnessed may have been the truth and he was relaying this to the reader, he was known as a ruthless land agent who broke leases, leveled people s homes and banished the poor. Trench looked upon such schemes as a cheap and efficient way to improve the estate . . . the population decreased by 40.3 % during the Trench years, suggesting that in an attempt to clear the estate to make way for improvements, many people were forced to leave, receiving little or no money from him (Offalyhistoryarchives.com). Critics said of Trench, Even at his worst he gave his tenants the care that a good stock breeder gives to his stock (Irishtimes.com). • 3. Importance Of Humanism In Thomas More s Utopia Humanism was a movement that has influenced the Renaissance Era. According to Associate Professor of Art History, Robert Baldwin, humanism is a culture produced by urban elites to cope with...possibilities keenly experienced in the city...where divine reason ruled over base matter, mind over body, intellect over the passions (1 2). The book Utopia, written by Thomas More, includes many aspects of humanism in the society which plays a big role in the punishment of crime, greed of the people, and the equality of its systems. More states that in his contemporary society, the citizens were driven off their lands with no money, and therefore they had to resort to stealing which was punishable by death. Consequently when [people] grow up and commit the crimes that they were obviously destined to do... [the government starts] punishing them (More 27). Although the people are punished severely, the number of crimes committed are not diminishing because if death is the punishment of any crime then, if a thief [knew] that a conviction for murder will get him in no more trouble than...theft, he s naturally impelled to kill the person that he d...have robbed (More 29). The thief not only would have gotten rid of the only witness, making it easier to conceal the crime, but also persuaded other thieves to kill their victims as it would be advantageous. But in More s ideal society, a convicted thief has to return what he s stolen to its owner... [and] is sentenced to hard labor where apart from having to work very long hours, he has a perfectly comfortable life (30). Rather than killing a human being for taking an inanimate object, they are given a second chance to correct their ways, so they don t repeat the crime they committed. Also, they are treated more like people rather than monsters, so they are able to easily transition back into society. Humanism advocates human rights of the individuals and justice and equality for everyone, therefore humanists do not support the killing of human beings. Not only do the punishments differ between the two societies, but greed as well. In More s current society, in Europe, the government is corrupt and the people are poverty stricken due to the greed of the king. His decisions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Variacoes Ritmicas Op.15 Op.15 Op.15 Essay important composers, such as Alberto Ginastera, Olivier Messiaen, Riccardo Malipiero, Luigi Dallapiccola, Bruno Maderna and Aaron Copland. The Variações Rítmicas Op.15 is one of the most significant Nobre s composition from his second period. In this piece, Nobre explores serial techniques and percussive elements. The piece is a mix of Brazilian native rhythms and dodecaphonic music where Nobre explores the Brazilian percussion instruments. Besides the piano, Variações Rítmicas Op. 15 requires eight typical Brazilian percussion instruments: cuíca aguda (a friction drum which the performer plays with his hand inside the instrument), xocalho (maraca), afoxê (also known as cabaça, it is a maraca covered with a network of beads), reco reco (a scraper also known as guiro), five agogôs (cowbells), pandeiro (tambourine), tamborim (very small high pitched drum), and three atabaques (conga drums). Nobre also wrote several other works that require percussion instruments, such as the ballet Rhythmethron op. 27, composed exclusively for percussion instruments, Sonâncias I op. 37, for piano and percussion; and Sonâncias III op. 49, for two pianos. Those pieces confirms Bartók s influence on Nobre since he also composed a sonata for two piano and percussion, where he explores a variety of popular rhythms from Hungary. The 20th century composers who have most influenced me are Debussy, Bartók and Lutoslawski. These composers were capable of innovation in musical language without ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Measuring the Melting Points of Compounds and Mixtures Essay TECH0701: Measuring the Melting Points of Compounds and Mixtures Introduction This exercise dealt with the melting points of pure mandelic acid and benzoic acid. The eutectic temperature and composition of mandelic and benzoic acid mixtures were determined. And finally, an unknown was identified by its mixtures and melting point. The melting point of a compound is used by organic chemists not only to identify the compound, but also to establish its purity. To determine the melting point two temperatures were noted. The first was the point at which the first drop of liquid formed among the crystals; the second was the point at which the whole mass of crystals turned to a clear liquid. • 6. Essay Keynesian Economics Macroeconomics is the branch of economics concerned with the aggregate, or overall, economy. Macroeconomics deals with economic factors such as total national output and income, unemployment, balance of payments, and the rate of inflation. It is distinct from microeconomics, which is the study of the composition of output such as the supply and demand for individual goods and services, the way they are traded in markets, and the pattern of their relative prices. At the basis of macroeconomics is an understanding of what constitutes national output, or national income, and the related concept of gross national product (GNP). The GNP is the total value of goods and services produced in an economy during a given period of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If, however, some rigidity prevented wages from falling to the point where supply and demand for labor were at equilibrium, then unemployment could persist. Such an obstacle could be, for example, trade union action to maintain minimum wages or minimum wage legislation. Keynes s major innovation was to argue that persistent unemployment might be caused by a deficiency in demand for production or services, rather than by a disequilibrium in the labor market. Such a deficiency of demand could be explained by a failure of planned (intended) investment to match planned (intended) savings. Savings constitute a leakage in the circular flow by which the incomes earned in the course of producing goods or services are transferred back into demand for other goods and services. A leakage in the circular flow of incomes would tend to reduce the level of total demand. Real investment, known as capital formation (the production of machines, factories, housing, and so on), has the opposite effect it is an injection into the circular flow relating income to output and tends to raise the level of demand. In the earlier classical models of unemployment, such as the one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. How Easy Do You Think It Is for a New Chief Executive to... The culture of an organization can be defined by the way they do things , this means the way they make decisions, operate and how they choose and achieve their objectives. As culture is a set of values and practices, changing it may be difficult and a long process, especially if the change is organized by a new chief executive. Changing the culture of an organization may not be easy especially if the new chief executive does not fully understand the previous culture and therefore does not embrace it in the change. This lack of knowledge may result in an inappropriate culture being chosen that could limit the company s performance as productivity reduces. An example of a badly imposed culture can been seen with the Chrysler and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although proposals to change the culture were made in 2007, Sony s culture has still not fully transformed which is reflected in their still low competitively. Therefore, it may still take some time for Sony to fully embrace an innovative culture as their Japanese culture has largely influenced the organization. It also took a long time for Marks Spencer to introduce higher levels of technology, such as a stock control system, as they are said to have a backward culture . This is because they don t embrace change and are led by system and procedures. These examples provide evidence that change in a business s culture may not be done quickly as the organization is accustomed to the previous culture. However, changing a company s culture can be easy if the new chief executive conducts the change in an appropriate manner. As culture change will have a direct impact on stakeholders, it is important for the new chief executive to inform all stakeholders of the changes and to also encourage feedback. The loss of the innovative leader of Apple, Steve Jobbs created much anxiety about the new CEO Tim Cook. Stakeholders feared Cook would change the company and reject all Jobbs practices especially as the two leaders have different personalities. • 8. The Sheep Revolution in John Updike´s A P At first glance, A P written by John Updike, looks like a funny, slangy, youthful story about a young, nineteen year old boy, Sammy, who has the normal problems that come along with his age group; abhorrence for his job, talking despondently about the older generation, and dreaming about girls he sees in the store. However, when people look at the history of the 1960 s, they find it shows a change in American social values and morals. Furthermore, the revolution of multiple groups of minorities through the civil rights movement, such as women, gays, and African Americans just to name a few who were at the forefront of issues during the 1960 s. One of the biggest social groups that had some of the major impacts during the 1960 s were the youths in America, consisting of late teens to the late twenties. However, others that fell into that age group had already cemented their future with earlier choices in their lives. For example, the checker that worked next to Sammy, his name was Stokesie, a young twenty two year old who was already married with two children. Stokesie also holds the belief that he will become store manager someday, which fit the mold of the start from the bottom and only with hard work can one move up style of the out dated ideologies of the past decade. Stokesie represents everything from the 1950 s suburbiaism that the youth revolution of the 1960 s was against. Many have argued that this story has a feminist undertone to the main idea. Conceding, that going into public is a bit bold, especially for the time period shows somewhat of a revolt by the girls. Although, someone can contend that if a girl or girls went into a grocery store in a bikini during today s time, it would result in the same sort of reaction. One can also argue that the story is condescending toward women and shows them in a negative light. Energy Self Sufficiency in Building through Photovoltaic Cells ABSTRACT Solar energy is a way to acquire self sufficiency of many residential buildings. The different forms of solar cells made from different materials and in different ways are able to increase the efficiency of the solar cells and allow solar energy to become more widespread. Due to the possibility of a shortage of fossil fuels in the near future, solar power can serve as an integral component in solving the energy crisis through developing energy self sufficient buildings. To cause a current to flow through the cells and create an electrical current, the semiconductor incorporates a p n junction, which is when p type silicon is placed next to n type silicon. These semiconductors are usually made out of silicon, which, when in different forms can have efficiency from 16% to 32%. The efficiency of a photovoltaic cell is measured by the ratio of the amount of solar energy it converts to electrical energy to the total amount of solar energy that hits the cell (Department of Energy 2004). First, the case went to a trial court in which the judge found that the application of the CDSA to Insite Violated their section 7 right under the charter, and granted Insite a constitutional exemption allowing it to continue to operate free from federal drug laws , but the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal and held that the doctrine of interjurisdictional immunity applied ( Canada (Attorney) , 2011, pg. 5). • 15. The Security Has Become A Hot Button Issue National security has become a hot button issue here in the United States. Rather than representing other nations, opposing forces represent different ideologies. Enemy personnel may appear as anyone or come from anywhere, even from the United States. These enemies have a potential to acquire dangerous weapons and cause detrimental amounts of damage to our nation. To save the country from these extreme life threatening circumstances, where there is clear and specific evidence, torture is ought to be reasonable so as to spare innocent lives. Most people in a civilized nation disagree with torture. However, in compelling and threatening circumstances it may be allowed. Here is the reason, Many terrorist organizations take advantage of the situation and make an entryway for an assault. Without the usage of torture, it would take extra time and open doors for another strike later on. Through the use of torture, the CIA gained useful data by interrogating two terrorist group leaders, Khalid Sheik Mohammed and Abu Zubaydah, both of them gave significant data, after agents used torture. (Gordon n.p.) Zubaydah showed the way to Khalid Mohammed, who was found to be the mastermind behind 9 11 attacks. (Gordon n.p.) The usage of torture helped gain useful information about terrorist organizations accountable for the assaults and it opened a way to stop possible assaults driven by Al Qaida later on. After developing and illustrating the typology, we suggest avenues for empirical investigation, specifying the particular cognitive processes that we expect to be differentially affected by different categories of visual rhetorical figures. Among the more important contributions of the typology is its demonstration of how concepts from art theory, semiotics and kindred disciplines can be linked to concepts drawn from social cognition in a manner susceptible to empirical study. A typology of visual rhetorical figures Defining visual rhetoric in ads We follow McQuarrie and Mick (1996) in defining a rhetorical figure as an artful deviation in form that adheres to an identifiable template. Thus, the headline Can t say no to pistachio is a rhetorical figure because it deviates in its arrangement of sounds from an ordinary sentence. However, readers do not consider this deviation to be an error because they have encountered this kind of repetition of syllables many times and have learned to treat it as a rhyme. Similarly, when readers encounter the verbal pun Why weight for success? in an ad for the Diet Center, they understand it as a play on a word with two meanings (i.e. weight and wait ). • 17. Deception And Trickery, Often Seen In Real Life, Is A Concept Deception and trickery, often seen in real life, is a concept well portrayed in William Shakespeare s Hamlet. In the play, as the conflict develops, Hamlet, King Claudius, and Ophelia, all use deception to achieve their goals. Hamlet, being the main character, has many instances of deceit. He starts out by feigning madness, then puts on a play to find out if the king killed his father, and finally switches out papers, sending Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to their deaths. Hamlet meets with his dead father s ghost and learns that Claudius killed the deceased king. Polonius wants Ophelia to find out what Hamlet is doing while he and the king eavesdrop. Because Ophelia is required to listen to Polonius, she blatantly lies to Hamlet in their ensuing conversation. • 20. The Importance Of Mass Media Bias In The Media 1. Introduction Having control over an entire country s population s opinion is a powerful thing to have. Possessing that control would allow you to direct how the population spends their money or even who they like and dislike in politics. The mainstream media news outlets have this control and are expected to give us information that is unbiased, fair, and not meant to sway our opinion. The topic I will be exploring is bias in the mainstream news media and how it affects their viewers. This is an important topic in the field of communication because it has such a great impact on any country that uses mass media to disseminate information. The information can be given to the viewers with a certain twist to intentionally shape their view of an event, or it can be unintentionally bias just by the tone and manner they are reporting on the event. I am going to research how mass media news outlets influence the viewers opinion, and what goes into picking the news stories covered. These are controversial topics to get into, but important to consider. They can have a very big impact on things like elections for a political office, support or dislike of a certain group, or can sway your opinion of who is the hero in a certain story. My sources will need to show specific examples of how the media is biased towards one opinion, what the effects are from this, and who makes the determination of the bias that is being displayed. 2. • 21. Alienation And Anomie Essay Both concepts of alienation and anomie signify how individualism has impacted the social structures through industrialization and the division of labour. Both Marx and Durkheim s theories emphasize the relationships between people in society and how this impacts on separateness and individualism within it; however, both theories are different. Where Marx is concerned he focuses on being alienated as a result of materialized matter through the bourgeoisie alienating oneself from culture, for Durkheim anomie is due to the lack of a collective conscience within society preventing both regulation and integration of culture; for Durkheim this negatively impacts on social solidarity and cohesion. Alienation occurred after the periods of slavery and serfdom arose a capitalist society, workers selling their labour skills in order to earn a living wage. In comparison to feudal societies where wealth was inherited, capitalist societies through the bourgeoisie was about owning the means of production enabling them to own private property and this being wealth. However, the cost price of the goods produced was significantly higher than the labourer s wages resulting in a profit for the bourgeoisie, this being the method of attaining wealth. The capitalist mode of production generates its wealth through exploitation of the proletariat. This field overlaps with electronics, computer science, artificial intelligence, mechatronics, nanotechnology, and bioengineering. Science fiction author Isaac Asimov is often given credit for being the first person to use the term robotics in a short story composed in the 1940s. In the story, Asimov suggested three principles to guide the behavior of robots and smart machines. Asimov s Three Laws of Robotics, as they are called, have survived to the present: 1. Robots must never harm human beings. 2. Robots must follow instructions from humans without violating rule 1. 3. Robots must protect themselves without violating the other rules. • 26. The Number Of Mobile Cellular Networks Operators Who Can... The work has been able to verify that the number of mobile cellular network operators who can effectively share infrastructure on a base station is limited by the following parameters: Sensitivity degradation threshold E field threshold or radiation limit Allowable BTS noise floor limit Require antenna isolation Interference level (from spurious emission, leakages, etc.) Tower wind loading From the result, it was observed that six (6) GSM operators can share infrastructure for a passive infrastructure sharing scheme without severe and unacceptable degradation of system performance. For number of BTS operators greater than six (6), the noise floor becomes larger than 110dB, which is not acceptable. However, as the number of users of a tower increase, the wind loading and tower bending moment increases. Therefore, when designing towers, wind loading analysis for collocation scenario should be carried out. Among the parameters, the level of sensitivity degradation should be monitored closely, since its value aid in determining system performance for a specific interference level and BTS noise floor, which depends on the number of collocating operators. When the sensitivity degradation is greater than 3dB it indicates that the interference threshold is larger than the noise floor limit, which is temperature and bandwidth dependent. It was also observed that the higher the antenna gain, the longer the antenna separating distance. The coverage radius is affected by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Labor Movement In The 1800s Labor Movement During the late 1800 s America became involved in a large labor movement that would shape history. As America was becoming more industrialized, the need for workers increased overnight. The workplace was changing as machines became common and the demand for unskilled workers brought new groups into the workforce including immigrants, women, and children (Aboukhadijeh). The desperation from both employees and employers brought awareness to working conditions. Employees desired better working conditions, increased wages, and decreased working hours. Communicating with employers proved to be futile and fueled union movements. Union members would go on strike to force companies to meet their demands. Sometimes it would work and when it didn t, companies would lock out employees and bring in new workers to do the job. These actions led to violent protests, riots, and arrests. The Pinkertons were hired as security by companies during these trying times. Toward the end of the 19th century, the agency became more involved in labor disputes, always on the side of management (Crawford). The Pinkertons were labeled as villains by workers as blood was shed during these conflicts. The Manhattan project was a project that brought the world into the nuclear age/era. In the year 1939, we learned that German physicians had learned the secret to splitting the uranium atom. This was extraordinary. When Albert Einstein fled to America, he brought information about the German s capability to create a bomb capable of mass destruction. Einstein was accompanied by Erico Fermi, who escaped fascist Italy. The two thought they should tell President Roosevelt. They wrote a letter to him urge him to establish an atomic research project.
