My talk from DevOpsCon Berlin 2016. Ansible is a radically simple and lightweight provisioning framework which makes your servers and applications easier to provision and deploy. By orchestrating your application deployments you gain benefits such as documentation as code, testability, continuous integration, version control, refactoring, automation and autonomy of your deployment routines, server and application configuration. Ansible uses a language that approaches plain English, uses SSH and has no agents to install on remote systems. It is the simplest way to automate and orchestrate application deployment, configuration management and continuous delivery. In this tutorial you will be given an introduction to Ansible and learn how to provision Linux servers with a web-proxy, a database and some other packages. Furthermore we will automate zero downtime deployment of a Java application to a load balanced environment.

In a cloud based environment, where automation is a primary concern, guest operating systems need to be provisioned at boot time. There are a lot of actions that need to be performed at this stage, ranging from assigning the admin user’s credentials to creating WinRM listeners, storage configurations, RDP settings, guest agent installation, custom data execution and much more. The de-facto standard guest provisioning tools are cloud-init on Linux and cloudbase-init on Windows. I will present how cloudbase-init runs on all the Microsoft supported Windows editions (there are quite a few) and how it supports a plethora of metadata service implementations (EC2, OpenStack, the recently added Azure). Cloudbase-init is being run thousands of times daily all over the world’s public clouds and data centers and it has reached more than 5 million known runs to date. We will also take an in-depth look at the Argus integration testing framework, which automates the integration testing of cloudbase-init on real world platforms, to make sure it meets a very strict set of performance, compatibility and security requirements. At the end I will show you a live demo with a cloudbase-init bootstrapped Windows instance on Azure, and how you can benefit from the provisioning process.

This talk will cover the basics involved in getting your own cluster running using Python, demonstrate how to run some large parallel computations using Python MPI wrappers, and show some initial results on cluster performance.

Common wisdom has it that the test effort should be related to the risk of a change. However, the reality is different: Developers build elaborate automated test chains to test every single commit of their application. Admins regularly “test” changes on the live platform in production. But which change carries a higher risk of taking the live platform down? What about the software that runs at the “lower levels” of your platform, e.g. systems automation, provisioning, proxy configuration, mail server configuration, database systems etc. An outage of any of those systems can have a financial impact that is as severe as a bug in the “main” software! One of the biggest learnings that any Ops person can learn from a Dev person is Test Driven Development. Easy to say - difficult to apply is my personal experience with the TDD challenge. This talk throws some light on recent developments at ImmobilienScout24 that help us to develop the core of our infrastructure services with a test driven approach: * How to do unit tests, integration tests and systems tests for infrastructure services? * How to automatically verify Proxy, DNS, Postfix configurations before deploying them on live servers? * How to test “dangerous” services like our PXE boot environment or the automated SAN mounting scripts? * How to add a little bit of test coverage to everything we do. * Test Driven: First write a failing test and then the code that fixes it.

While better scheduling can mitigate prefill’s impact, it would be fundamentally better to avoid (most of) prefill. This talk introduces our preliminary effort towards drastically minimizing prefill delay for LLM inputs that naturally reuse text chunks, such as in retrieval-augmented generation. While keeping the KV cache of all text chunks in memory is difficult, we show that it is possible to store them on cheaper yet slower storage. By improving the loading process of the reused KV caches, we can still significantly speed up prefill delay while maintaining the same generation quality.

Also, loading large model files for deployment to production can be slow because of slow network or storage read operations. These challenges are prevalent when using popular frameworks like PyTorch, Ray, or HuggingFace, paired with cloud object storage solutions like S3 or GCS, or downloading models from the HuggingFace model hub. In his book, The Nature of the Physical World, Sir Arthur Eddington commented that “We have to appeal to the one outstanding law — the second law of thermodynamics — to put some sense into the world.” This sense-making goes beyond the physical world, too. Entropy is also essential in the fields of information and communication theory. During this lecture for the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, lecturer Andrea Goulet discussed the application of entropy-related concepts in two communication systems: software and collaborative teams. She examined how concepts that help us understand systemic statistical disorder, such as ergodic systems, Lyapunov exponents, Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, and Shannon-entropy can help us optimize for both software quality and innovation. She also provided several domain-specific models: Lehman’s Laws and Conway’s Law for software, as well as new models from her own research that relate to entropy and innovation. Entropy helps us understand the world and achieve great things. There is an underlying beauty in its principles that we can use to advance scientific discovery. When we understand the subtleties related to balancing surprise and structure, we increase our chances for effective collaboration and finding novel solutions to complex problems.
