It's great that we don't need to manage servers anymore and can just use a service. Let them worry about the availability. Endless capacity ftw.
Reality is that we are just entering another abstraction layer and the same problems need to be solved:
- what if the server goes down vs what if the service goes down
- how many servers do I need vs how many req/sec do I need ask Amazon to provision
- how do monitor my servers vs how do I monitor my service vs how do I monitor my functions
- how to control who gets access to my servers vs who can access my services
- how do I keep track of my server versions/dependencies vs how do I keep track of my functions versions/dependencies
A lot of the *-ilities revolve around trust. Trust in the system. And not just the technical side, also including the people side.
The promise of an API is not enough, it's the promise of a ecosystem of services.
It's only a small step from running a function on AWS Lambda vs using an external service.
Why run the function at all if someone is better at it? Because we have more 'control'?
In the presentation I will provide examples of real projects we did at Small Town Heroes (http://www.smalltownheroes.be) where we are leveraging the power of serverless. And how we try to expand our internal devops collaboration beyond the api boundaries to focus on the full stack service and not merely the components.

Distributed sagas a protocol for coordinating microservices

Back in 2016, I deployed an ASP.NET monolith app to IIS on Windows. It worked but it was clunky in every sense of the word. Over the years, the app was freed from Windows (thanks to .NET Core), containerized to run consistently in different environments (thanks to Docker) and decomposed into a set of loosely-coupled, event-driven, microservices (thanks to Cloud Run).

I shared my own experience on building hybrid applications based on PhoneGap also explained why I suddenly changed my own opinion about native apps and switched back to Xamarin.

Back in 2016, I deployed an ASP.NET monolith app to IIS on Windows. It worked but it was clunky in every sense of the word. Over the years, the app was freed from Windows (thanks to .NET Core), containerized to run consistently in different environments (thanks to Docker) and decomposed into a set of loosely-coupled, event-driven, microservices (thanks to Cloud Run).
The end result is a simpler and portable serverless architecture that's much cheaper to run and maintain. In this talk, we'll go through the modernization journey, explore the decision points and deep dive into the final architecture and code.

Next, by placing those findings into categories, prioritize the work to substitute with inclusive alternatives. Let’s examine some examples using both API and code assets. Next is a demonstration of how to automate analyzing your source code or documentation with a linter, looking for patterns based on rules that are fed into the tool. HCL Notes and Domino License Cost Reduction in the World of DLAU

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

CAKE: Sharing Slices of Confidential Data on Blockchain
Presented at the CAiSE 2024 Forum, Intelligent Information Systems, June 6th, Limassol, Cyprus.
Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

- The mobile apps depending on API v1, which was built in a rush, back in 2012, so that we could release the first version of the mobile app. The API allows the apps to have a structured way to access our data, and make bookings.
- And then there was our website, which also used rails controllers to access data. These two were different, to allow them to iterate rapidly and independently. API code didn’t share much in common with web, and features and changes for web, would have to be re-written for mobile. Unfortunately, it wasn’t just mobile and web. There was mobile web, other services, lantern our cx tool. As we grew, this became more of a problem.
- To address these problems, we started moving to a new system in early 2015
- 3 years in development API v2, also known as the ruby gem “Graphist”
- REST can be limiting. What is GraphQL? A Query language? It is NOT client or server side. It has things like introspection built in
