Standardization and localization of HRM practices * Controlling cross border operations of an MNE

Chapter 11: Performance Management
Multinational performance management
MNEs have specific expectations for each of its foreign subsidiaries, cooperative ventures and other
forms of operations modes, in terms of market performance and contribution to total profits and
competitiveness. It is important to recognise constraints that affect goal attainment when evaluating
subsidiary performance. These include: * Whole versus part a multinational is a single entity that faces
a global environment. Integration and control imperative often place the multinational in the positions
where it decides that the good of the whole is more important than the subsidiary s short term
profitability. * Volatility of the global environment because subsidiaries operate under such volatility

arise when subsidiary managers perceive that goals are set by distant HQs strategy team are unrealistic
and inflexible, due to a failure to take into account local conditions that change as a result of a volatile

Spanish Caste System Essay
Through the racial caste system of the Spanish Colonial Era, it is known that the people of mixed race
and dark skin of the time were viewed as inferior by the Spaniards. This inferiority complex was
mainly due to one group of people oppressing another. The irony behind this instance is that it was the
minority oppressing the majority. Another factor behind the success of the caste system was
internalized oppression, or, in other words, one group of people oppressing themselves. Through
accepting this perspective of thinking and contributing to the society that surrounded them, these
mixed race people ended up adding fuel to the fire of their oppression. According to Martha
Menchaca, author of Recovering History, Reconstructing Race, self oppression came because of the
vacancy of leadership positions in New Spain. At the core, this vacancy gave those who were not pure
Spaniards the opportunity to achieve a greater sense of social acceptance. In her book, Menchaca
states that while these people of color did, to an extent, succeed in improving their quality of life, the
tyrannical narrative was never really changed. Furthermore, it was this search for a better life that
created the foundation for what is now Mexico today.
People of color were oppressed from the very beginning of the colonial movement. The caste system
that the Spaniards created used race as the foundation for justifying subjugation. Through the caste
system, one could see that people with lighter skin and

Instructional Design Models Are Not Just Boxes And Arrows
In my opinion Instructional design models are not just boxes and arrows, they have practical value in
real life instructional design projects and to clarify that, I will first of all define what is instructional
design, define instructional analysis, define instructional design models, discuss component of models
and finally using one of the most widely known and used instructional design model to create a
practical real life instructional design project with topic titled ENGLISH LANGUAGE SENTENCES
AND PHRASES. Instructional design is defined as a system using learning theory that creates
specifications for the development and implementation of learning experiences, materials, and
environments (Whitmyer, 1999). According to Dick and Carey, An instructional analysis is a set of
procedures that, when applied to an instructional goal, results in the identification of the relevant steps
for performing a goal and the subordinate skills required for a student to achieve the goal Thus, the
instructional analysis breaks the skills described in your goal statement down into smaller steps, and
then identifies any other relevant skills that might be necessary. The instructional analysis is
developed from your goal statement, which highlights the importance of making sure your goal
statement is well written and worthwhile. Dick and Carey actually break the instructional analysis step
into two parts: Goal Analysis and Subordinate Skills Analysis. Instructional design models serve as

Train to Pakistan:
In India, the summer of 1947 was not just another summer. With this simple, almost vulgar phrase, the
novel by Khushwant Singh Train to Pakistan (Train to Pakistan, 1956). No, that was not just any
summer. A year earlier, in the midst of the monsoon, India had attained independence from Britain and
the country had been divided into Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan. The same Khushwant Singh was
born in 1915 in Hadali, a town that after the territorial split incorporated to Pakistan.

How To A Failure In College
Experiencing a Failure Once when I experienced failure I was a junior in high school and I made the
varsity team for volleyball. However I wasn t a starter and I consider that one of my biggest failures.
One of my biggest goals as a kid was to make the varsity team and play and it was an amazing feeling
knowing that I did make the team, however, I didn t play. I ve always wanted to be on that varsity
court, so knowing that I didn t start motivated me to do better next year. So for the past year I ve been
working extra hard in and outside of practices just to make the extra effort to make sure I will get to
play my final year of high school. It affected me because I ve always wanted to play and I started all

The Dormant Threat of Smallpox
Introduction/Background/History: Small Pox is an infectious disease that causes a fever and rash. The
term pox comes from the Latin word for spotted. It also refers to the raised bumps that appear on the
face and body of an infected person. Small Pox is cause by the Variola virus that appeared many years
ago. There are two rudimentary patterns of small pox: Variola minor and Variola major, which is the
worst and most common of the two. The earliest known death was Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses. Could it
be a coincidence that the disease also originated from Eygpt? Edward Jenner was the man in 1796. He
was experimenting and proved that small pox was closely related to cow pox. He would then make a
key breakthrough in his discovery by concluding that it would protect against smallpox.
Small Pox out breaks have been going on ever since the Egyptians; however, eradication of the
disease has become a worldwide look. The last case of the disease in the United States was in 1949.
Somalia was the last outbreak in 1977 before stoppage of the vaccine began. People felt like it was not
necessary to get the vaccine for prevention. The only place you can find the disease is in laboratories.
However, after September 11th 2001, there is intensified concern with the variola virus. The U.S.
government has fears that it might be used as an agent of bioterrorism. Any signs of Small Pox
outbreaks with have many apprehensions of a terrorist attack.

Women And Their Roles During The Second Industrial Revolution
Women and Their Roles in the Second Industrial Revolution When discussing history, it is often
assumed that the history of men is also the history of women. Historians often forget that women
constantly experience historical processes differently because of the roles that they play and their
biological differences. The second Industrial Revolution affected women uniquely, and their
involvement and contributions were distinctive as well. The second Industrial Revolution lead to
many advantages and disadvantages for women, it changed the types of work women performed,
changed their attitudes about working, men s attitudes towards them working, and their status and
function in the family structure was transformed as well. Along with the technical and economic
advancements during the Industrial Revolution was a social change that occurred for women, being
the impetus for more progressive movements, empowerment, and the fight for equality in a patriarchal
society. Throughout time, there have been many revolutions; the Puritan Revolution, the French
Revolution, Urban Revolution, Commercial Revolution, Scientific Revolution, and Computer
Revolution to name just a few. Of all these nonpolitical revolutions, the one with the longest and
widest currency is doubtless the Industrial Revolution (Stewart, pg. 1). It is important to understand
the historical background of the revolutions to make more sense of why women held the roles they did
and how things really changed for them.

Star Wars Game Analysis
Would you rather be in a dinosaur world or play a game where you are in a battle in Star Wars? These
two things are possible. First up is Ark Survival Evolved . This game is an open world with almost
endless possibilities. There really isn t an objective given to you, players just have to come up with
their own objective. Your own personal objective could be to tame a certain dinosaur or build your
base but first you need to get the supplies to do so. Although there is not an objective given to you,
most people have the goal and that is to stay alive!
Now for Star Wars Battlefront . The objective depends on what gamemode you play. For example, in
one of the gamemodes, you have to defend or attack objectives and those are usually labeled ... Show

Ark Survival Evolved and Star Wars Battlefront are different. Ark has dinosaurs but there isn t really a

Essay On New York Charity
In New York after 1815, there seemed to be a flood of individuals that stormed into the city walls. The
spread of a more urban area and a large numbers of immigrants that stormed into New York created a
dynamic of both benefits and downfalls for the government of New York. The force that was coming
for workers provided employers extremely cheap day workers, with the belief that the exponential
growth of pauperism represented an unnecessary and eradicable evil (pg. 577). Associations were
formed for problems across the board, to assist widows and orphans, immigrants and Negroes, debtors
and prisoners, aged females and young prostitute . In January of 1805, there was a report of 10,000
residents that were on some form of charity in New York ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, New York was against slavery and wanted to help free slaves. New York established an
Emancipation that would free slaves, but it would limit them the right to vote. The blacks would have
other restrictions such as not being able to hold public office, being able to testify in state court, or
even marry whites. The emancipation was denied and sent back to be revised. With the new revisions,
the slaves would not be able to vote and the Assembly agreed on the bill, but it was denied by the
Senate. In 1785, there was an organization called the New York Manumission Society that was created
to help abolition slavery. This organization began to instill fear into newspaper editors against
advertising slave sales. The organization threatened auction houses and ship owners. The organization
also provided legal services to slaves that wanted to pursue in suing their slave owners (Cash, 2008).
Apparently, the organization began to shed light in New York and slavery began to decrease. While
these changes were happening, whites began to take over some of the jobs that were given to slaves
for lower wages. Some of the whites were unemployed and need a job to provide for their

Criminal Behavior Analysis
The ways in which offenders think about their potential actions are all diverse. This varied nature can
stem from the characteristics of the criminal being inherently different. However, the actual crime
commission can play a role in how offenders think about crime. This same thought process is true for
how an offender makes the decision to engage in criminal activity. There are countless variables and
factors that are moving and connected at any given time, that can result in the engagement of criminal
behavior and/or activity. Therefore, it is imperative that we understand the complex thought processes
that offenders participate in, with this knowledge we learn how to better protect society, as well as
how to prevent further crime from occurring. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For those offenders that are found guilty, the statement above also seems even more bizarre. However,
as we have learned this half of the semester, an often used method by white collar criminals in their
decision making process, as well as their own personal thought process about their crime, often times
can center around varied thoughts of deniability. Benson (1985), states that normally with white collar
crimes there is not necessarily a lengthy search of who committed the crime, the primary focus is why.
However, a great deal of the offenders use some tactic of deniability to describe their decision making
process during the commission of their crimes. For example, some offenders deny that the person they
embezzled from had enough money as it is, therefore denial of a victim, which allowed the
continuance of criminal behavior, activity, and obviously thinking patterns. The deniability aspect can
branch further into allowing the offender to not feel shame for his or her actions, which is why they
felt secure in committing the crime in the first place. Also, they did not believe that there was actually
a victim, for example a top executive stealing millions from customers. The theme of deniability is
vast, and covers a tremendous amount of irrational thoughts and neutralizations, and from what I
gathered from the literature, allows the offender to build a positive

The Role Of Family In The Movie World War Z
Family
Introduction
Family is everything to some people. Most parents work hard to provide everything they can for their
children. Many times the man of the house, usually the father or husband, believes it s his duty to
protect his wife and kids. No matter what the circumstances are, his family is his first priority. He will
risk his life to protect his family from any harm. There are times when the father isn t there, and
during those times the mother steps up to the plate. Even a poor mother would do anything to provide
her children with food when she hasn t ate. The importance of family is known all around the world.
Anyone would do anything for their family to be safe. The movie World War Z is a great example of

Analysis Of The Poem Norwegian Wood
Music is what allows many to relax and clear their minds but Haruki Muarakami uses it in his writing
to add another layer of complexity. In a novel filled with complicated human emotions, ambiguous
endings, and constant symbolism Murakami also adds in a multitude of musical references most
prominently from the band The Beatles. While it s easy to overlook these references as unimportant
character traits it becomes apparent as the novel continues that music is purposely bound to this novel
for a distinctive purpose. In the novel Norwegian Wood by Haruki Marakami music is used to mirror
characters, foreshadow, and be used as dramatic irony.
Norwegian Wood is not only the title of Haruki Murakami s novel but it is also the first Beatles song
we hear in the book. The song immediately becomes a important and integral part of the story because
it what originally takes us into Toru s memories of Naoko. One of the first details Toru recalls when
thinking about his time in the meadow with Naoko after hearing the song is seeing, Two bright red
birds leap startled from the center of the meadow and dart into the woods (Murakami, 6). While this
may seem like an unnecessary detail it is important to note that the song Norwegian Wood s full title is
actually Norwegian Wood (This Bird has Flown) . Because this is the song that reminds Toru of
Naoko from the beginning it seems clear that Murakami wants the reader to piece together that Naoko
has flown away from Toru. Using a

Aphrodite Remedies
Now that we have looked at the symptoms, remedies, and agencies of Ἔρως, we ought to find a
decent definition of what Ἔρως is based on The Symposium. I think a helpful method of trying to find
the definition of Ἔρως is to look at the agencies, symptoms, and remedies. As shown earlier, we can
say that the agent of Ἔρως is Aphrodite. Aphrodite is the goddess of love. This being the case, we can
say that Ἔρως is either love, or a form of love. In order to see whether or not it is love or a form of
love, we must look at the symptoms. The symptoms as stated earlier of Ἔρως are courage, desire, and
being a pursuer. It seems that although these three symptoms are different, they all tend to be similar
to the idea of desire. This is shown because all people do things in order to achieve an apparent good
(which may or may not be good in reality.) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From this then, we can say that Ἔρως produces desire in people. Finally, we will analyze the remedies
of Ἔρως. It has been stated earlier that the remedy of Ἔρως is to fulfill one s desires. The fulfillment
of one s desires seems to be a plausible remedy for Ἔρως because a symptom of Ἔρως is desire. We
say we know a thing based off of it s function. For example, we say that an axe is an axe if it can cut
down a tree by swinging, or a chair is a thing we sit on. If we change the function of a thing, then we
also change what the thing is. (If I sit on a table, I would argue that the table becomes a chair, since it
is serving the purpose of a chair.) For the case of Ἔρως, it seems that the function of Ἔρως is desire.
This being the case, we can say that Ἔρως is some sort of desire, and thus giving us a definition of
Ἔρως in regards to the

nearly as many different beliefs in regards to the act of sex as there are for something as prominent
and controversial as religion. It is a topic that the majority of individuals do not want to discuss, yet it
is something that the majority of everyone is intrigued about. Throughout this research paper we will
take a closer look at sexual intercourse within the human species by attempting to define what sex is,
find out who partakes in this deed, determine when it is typically done, and finally reveal why it is
done.
What Is Sex? While the title begins with the pronoun who, not the pronoun what, it will be much

All of these communications assume that the speakers and listeners share a definition of sex that is
clear, consistent across situations, and unbiased by personal motives. In fact, there is limited research
evaluating individuals definitions of sex, and the research that does exist seems based on implicit
assumptions that may be problematic in some ways. (Peterson Muehlenhard, 2007, p. 256 268)
This statement is implying that they back the notion that the definition of sex is still unknown; one
hundred different individuals would give you one hundred different definitions of the enigmatic term
sex . Additionally, this confusion is established in an article by Judith Mackay (2011) when she states
that sex research, where it exists, is usually fertility related rather than sex oriented. Even definitions
vary. There is no agreed definition of sex counseling, obscenity, or even what people mean by the term
sex, all making comparable analysis difficult. But there is no way that we could go any further into
this research without establishing a set definition, so the misperception must end now. For the sake of
this research paper, sex will be defined as any vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse between two or more
individuals. These three different forms of sex are often involved in sexual intercourse, but these terms
can be ambiguous to many customary individuals. Each of these different forms of sex varies from
one another, all offering something

Chicken And Waffles Essay
Chicken and Waffles, an American classic combo. A dish where dinner meets breakfast and its
popularity grew from Harlem, New York. Chicken and Waffles is an American dish where
traditionally, fried chicken and a waffle are put together and is eaten with butter and syrup. There are
many different variations of this dish and you can either go sweet or spicy.
Chicken and Waffles was born in a time period called the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem
Renaissance was part of the early twentieth century were African American culture was at its golden

The Causes And Cons Of Chemistry In Chemistry
After completion of the transesterification reaction employed at the optimal conditions, the catalyst
was collected from the reactant mixture by filtration; the catalyst was washed with hexane several
times to remove the adhered oil particles, and then dried at 110°C for 2 hr. The catalyst was reused
several times without further treatment to obtain FAME from WCSO.
To evaluate catalyst stability, the optimum amount of CaO that was obtained by examining the
operating condition was stirred with 38ml methanol at the optimum conditions obtained. After the
catalyst was separated, methanol was mixed with 30 ml WCSO and the reaction was carried out under
the optimum conditions, 65°C, methanol: oil ratio 30:1, 3 hr. and 300 rpm.
3. Results and discussion
3.1 Catalyst characterization
The synthesized CaO catalyst was subjected to different temperatures and times of calcination. The
calcination time and temperature change the catalyst structure; consequently, this affects catalyst
activity and the concentration of FAMEs produced. The impact of different calcination temperatures,
700 °C, 750 °C, 800 °C, 850 °C, and 900 °C, and durations, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 hr, were tested for the
transesterification of WCSO to produce biodiesel. The eggshell powder showed an apparent color
different from the color before calcination as shown in Figure 1. Table 3 shows that exposing egg shell
powder to a longer time and higher temperature of calcination results in a lighter white color. Being

Roman Polanski s Memoirs Of A Pianist
Roman Polanski s heartfelt and honorable interpretation of the true horrors of the Holocaust, (based on
the memoir of famed Polish pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman,) appears at face value as just another
blockbuster period piece. Yet it offers so much more. Polanski expertly crafts filmmaking artistry with
true life, allowing the viewer to be completely immersed in a time previously known to them only
through history books. Upon the first viewing I was restless, overwhelmed and unsuspecting of the
sheer weight of what I had previously considered to be another film pandering to an audience of mock
sympathy. By watching it a second time, I was fully capable of appreciating the stunning and
emotionally demanding story of one man s (at times, reluctant) ... Show more content on

One scene in particular achieved this goal completely. During one of the final scenes of the film,
Szpilman is in hiding, and attempts to open a can of soup. He creeps out of his hiding spot in an old
abandoned house to find something to open the can with. As he attempts to pry the can open, he falls
directly in the sight of an SS Officer. Instead of shooting him, the officer asks Szpilman a few
questions, resulting in Szpilman playing piano for the Nazi. As tense and emotional as this scene is to
watch, the audience also receives a moment of joy. Polanski uses a high angle to give the audience the
impression that they too are looking down on Szpilman as he plays the piano, making him look even
weaker and trapped than he already was. However, the camera angle then alternates, showing the
audience the Nazi officer and Szpilman on the same level, allowing us a brief moment of tenderness in
an otherwise violent and depressing world. As Szpilman plays, direct sunlight illuminates him,
highlighting the pain and anguish written on his face. (2:01 2:07) This scene is certainly romanticized
from the original version as told to us by Szpilman. In his memoir, he declares, Do what you like to
me. I m not leaving from here. (Page 177) It is hard to distinguish truth from fiction in this account.
Did Szpilman really speak with such courage, with such

The Is A Hot Topic Across The World Essay
Equality is a hot topic across the world. Not only concerning gender, but in regard to social class, race,
disability, income, and ethnic group, among others. In Canada, we like to think of ourselves as a
country as progressive in that aspect. In actuality, however, this is not as necessarily true as we would
like to think. After the 2011 Election, female representation in the House was at 26%. While this
seems good at first, it is still below what the United Nations recommends as ideal for a shift in policy
and government (Anderssen, 2015). Moreover, some political scientists estimate that it will be another
century at least before Canada achieves gender parity (Anderssen, 2015).
Considering this, what exactly could be done to accelerate our nation s movement toward
egalitarianism for all? One such idea is that of reserving certain seats in the House of Commons for
members of specific groups (women, natives, etc). Almost invariably, however, a host of problems
follows along in its shadow. The mission of this essay is to analyse the positives and negatives of this
approach towards equality within the government, as well as to extrapolate whether or not it should be
enacted within the Canadian government using examples from overseas and across the border.
Reservation Policy 101
In a nutshell, policies meant to reserve positions within the government are put into action in order to

Improving Older Adults Memory Performance Using Prior...
The article that I will be reviewing for the third discussion day is titled, Improving Older Adults
Memory Performance Using Prior Task Success. This research was completed by Lisa Geraci and
Tyler M. Miller, two researchers from Texas A M University. In order to better understand their work,
it will be benefical to look at some of the background information on the topic. When it comes to
older adults, one of the aspects that can affect memory is stereotypes. In their work, the researchers
provided a thorough review of this phenomenon, which was labeled as stereotype threat effect. On a
whole, this is when knowledge of a stereotype influences behavior. For example, experimentally
activating negative stereotypes of aging can cause ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the task success condition, participants were given a package containing 30 sets of five scrambled
words. Next, they were instructed to arrange the word to rearrange the words to form a grammatically
correct four word sentence. Participants in this condition had an unlimited amount of time to complete
the task. In contrast, the task failure condition had 10 seconds to complete the task. This was half the
time that it took participants in the task success condition to arrange a sentence. Moreover, the control
group did not receive this task to complete. After this task, all participants completed a memory
experiment. For the experiment, the participants were given a list of 30 words. They had 2 minutes to
evaluate this list after which they had to write down as many words as they could remember. For the
results, the researchers found that there was a statistically significant difference between the groups.
Specifically, older adults in the task success group had better recall than the control and task failure
groups. Additionally, the older adults who experienced prior task failure did not have worse memory
recall than the control group. Although these results posed true for the older adults, they did not extend
to the younger adults. In regards to these results, the researchers theorized a couple potential reasons
why these relationships exist. First, they reasoned that

Defining Honesty Essay
Defining Honesty Winston Churchill once said, Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of

Honesty is classified as a noun in part of speech. Honesty has many similar meanings; such as
uprightness, morality, trustworthiness, goodness, scrupulousness, decency, rectitude, righteousness,
fairness, reliability and honor. These synonyms are all equal to truth. The meaning of honesty in this

never lies, respects others, and when she is tempted to cheat on her test, she overcomes with her power
of honesty. This fits the definition about truthfulness in everything.
There is also another different meaning of honesty, such as plants with flat papery seed pods: a hardy
European plant with purplish or white flowers and flat silvery seed pods that are often used for indoor
decoration. Its Latin name is Lunaria annua. It also called silver dollar, money plant, and satin flower.
This meaning is totally different than average people know about the honesty. Normally people won t
think honesty as a plant related thing. Many would be surprised by this definition. How many would
go and say honesty is a beautiful plant?

know.
Did horses evolve from a different animal?
About 55 million years ago the horse we know now was a small animal standing 2 feet tall. The
earliest horse had pointed teeth which shows that it might have eaten meat. As you know the horse
nowadays doesn t have toes. A long time ago horses had toes. The skull of the earliest horse looks like
a fox s skull with back teeth.
How were horses used in the past and used how are they used now?
For centuries horses have been used to clear forests, plow land, and herd cattle. A long time time ago

Poster Analysis Two Fisted Fight
As Americans, we learn about the past wars and the outcomes. As young Americans, we never
received the chance to actually know what it was like to live in that era. Learning about the past times
helps us understand what we did not go through ourselves. In order to receive the best chance at
learning about the times, one should look at actual representations of what life was like. For example,
if a person was interested in learning about World War II, that person should find it in his or her best
interest to look at World War II posters. The posters would provide the person interested with an item
built in that time period, for that time period, by the people in that time period. Considering that time

Likewise, the other hand grasps a gun. This gun is likely an old, bolt action rifle. The bolt action rifles

guns that can amount to twice the damage and more rounds per magazine. If a similar principle were

Identity In The Film Moonlight
Identity is transitional. Not one identity is held constant throughout one s life. Thus, the
intersectionality of one s identity conveys how complicated humans are. This complex nature of
humans is brought to life in the movie Moonlight. Directed by Barry Jenkins, this coming of age film
explores the many facets of identity in the main character, Chiron. Chiron is not the only fully thought
character; every named character parallels people of all walks of life. Through the intricacies of the
characters, stereotypes are presented and shattered. But, the film s central point is not to counter
stereotypes. Moonlight tells a story of reality where stereotypes are rooted in truth. Consequently,
Moonlight plays into a majority of stereotypes of class, race, gender, and sexual orientation. The first
set of stereotypes that all the characters back are those associated with class. Lower class people are
often affiliated with little to no savings, renting properties, and living in the inner city. In the first
chapter of the film, i. Little, Chiron runs into an abandoned apartment that is known as a crack hole.
This gives context into where Chiron lives: the inner city, and more closely related to the ghetto.
Chiron returns home to a barred window apartment complex. He is merely a child who has no control
over his home, so this situation speaks more upon his mother, Paula. After a few days of being
introduced, she sells the television set to use for drug money. To take a bath, Chiron heats the water on
the stove and uses dish soap. It is obvious that this family is a stereotypical low class family. In the
second chapter, ii. Chiron, Paula in a similar situation, but a smaller, more run down apartment
complex. She physically and emotionally abuses Chiron for money. This aspect ties into the
intersectionality of being a low class African American. The stereotype that correlates to this issue is
the crack victim. Paula s need for money stems from a need of crack. Her addiction has run her family
into the bleak stereotypes of low class. In chapter three, iii. Black, we are invited into the home of
Chiron s friend, Kevin. Kevin is similar to Paula in how he lives in a barred apartment complex, but
he has a steady

Comedic Violence in The Medea, The Oresteia, and Antigone...
Comedic Violence in The Medea, The Oresteia, and Antigone
Almost no Greek tragedy escapes the use of violence. The Medea, The Oresteia, Antigone, and other
classic works of Grecian tragoidia all involve huge components of violence in many prominent places,
and for all of these stories, violent action is an integral part of the play. Medea, especially, is a
character worthy of note in this regard; her tumultuous life can be plotted accurately along a path of
aggression and passionate fits, and her bloody history lends tension and ascendance to the cathartic
events of the gripping Medea. In contrast to this turbulent streak of brutality in Grecian tragedy stands
the world of Greek comedy. Violence in comedy is just as much a part ... Show more content on

In comparison to this is Lysistrata, a comedy in which violence is not shown to be an answer that
works. In this story, however, the overarching dilemma is the existence of the Peloponnesian War. For
Euripides, violence is a question and a centerpiece of intrigue, yet it is not the root of the plot.
Aristophanes, on the other hand, chooses to investigate gender relations and the concerns of daily life
by using a hollow context of violence that ostensibly motivates the actions of the characters while
avoiding center stage as an issue of any weight in the play itself.
At first glance this analysis seems wrong: it appears that Lysistrata is very much concerned with
violence. After all, Aristophanes intended to write an anti war piece. However, while this statement is
technically true, it is only a skin deep realization. In actuality, Lysistrata herself is not anti war in the
sense of being ideologically opposed to war; she is anti war only insofar as she detests the
Peloponnesian War. And yet, although the Mede is at our gates, / You ruin Greece with mad intestine
wars. / This is my first reproach to both of you, (Aristophanes 1132) says Lysistrata to the assembled
Spartan and Athenian ambassadors. In this passage, the fiery woman establishes her stance and
proclaims that she is mainly upset over the fact that the current war is more a civil war than a war
against actual enemies. Her core

Locating bass can sometimes prove to be a futile attempt leaving one to wonder, where did they all

Germ Theory Of Disease By Robert Koch And Louis Pasteur
Introduction
In the nineteenth century, two famous scientists Robert Koch and Louis Pasteur formally
demonstrated that microorganisms were the cause of many diseases. This proposition has become
known as Germ Theory of Disease . Not that this notion had never been touched before on the
contrary, there have been ancient mentions as old as 36 BC from a roman scholar, Marcus Terentius
Varro, that stated: certain minute creatures, which cannot be seen by the eyes, which float in the air
and enter the body through the mouth and nose, and there cause serious diseases . The concept of
Germ Theory of Disease suffered a major overturn in the twentieth century, when Metchnikoff showed
that microorganisms could also act as beneficial agents and health promoters. Was there then launched
the basis for what we now call probiotics. Thus, today we know we are, one way or the other, vastly
colonized by microorganisms. It is certainly clear that these microorganisms are present forming
heterogeneous and specific communities over large body surfaces. These colonization processes occur
primarily on skin, vagina and the gastrointestinal tract.
Even so, our body has a remarkable ability to protect itself against microbial invasions. Within the
human body resides a salient protection mechanism called immune system prepared to defend the
body against millions of bacteria, viruses, toxins and parasites. However, how does the immune
system enable the body to accept a vast amount of

Nell Gwyn Research Paper
Research Paper In 1660 there was a major restoration in the theatre community. One of the most
impactful results of the restoration was the allowance of women on stage. Before the restoration
women s roles were played by young boys ( Women In Restoration Theatre on WordPress.com. ). As
one can imagine the appearance of women on stage did not settle easily with the common population.
The first women to hit the European stage, Nell Gwyn, did not make it easy for the people to accept
the new change either. Here are some reasons why. Nell Gwyn was born in February 2, 1650. Her
father died in a debtor s prison when she was an infant causing her to be raise with her mother in the
bawdyhouse of Covent Garden. Nell s sister, Rose, influenced her to become a Orange Girl at Drury
Lane Theatre ( Nell Gwyn. ). It did not take long for her talents to be noticed. The same can also be
said about the scandal around her to come. Nell stood out in many ways, but she caught the eyes of
many suitors due to her fiery red hair and gorgeous hazel eyes. She did not have the typical look of the
other women with dark hair and eyes. Nell was not only beautiful; her fun and witty personality made
her even more desirable. Charles Hart, leading actor of the theatre, saw Nell s beauty and began his

The International Security Threat Report
The International Security Threat Report provides data on cybersecurity attacks and threats throughout
2012. The report shows that there was a 42% increase in targeted attacks (page 10). Although the
types of attacks have been evolving, the number of people affected and the amount of damage has
increased. Cyber attacks have evolved in such a way that allows them to be a large threat for citizens,
businesses, and governments. Cyber attacks have been putting the privacy and information of citizens
at risk through mobile malware. From 2011 to 2012 the amount of mobile malware increased by 58%
(page 12). The mobile malware was used to steal the the user s information 32% of the time (page 33).
This is especially dangerous considering people increasingly use their phones to store personal
information. Cell phones are tied to the owner s phone contract, which offers an additional way for the
hacker to cause financial damage to the phone s owner. Cell phone users can decrease the risk of
having their private information stolen and their device compromised by installing security software
on their cell phones, but that does not get rid of the risk altogether. Social media has also increased the
security threat for citizens. In the past cyber criminals and spammers have attempted to steal
information and scam users through spam emails, however, because of the increasing popularity of
social media networks, cyber criminals and spammers have been using emails less and

Spanish Caste System Essay Through the racial caste system of the Spanish Colonial Era, it is known that the people of mixed race and dark skin of the time were viewed as inferior by the Spaniards. This inferiority complex was mainly due to one group of people oppressing another. The irony behind this instance is that it was the minority oppressing the majority. • 4. Instructional Design Models Are Not Just Boxes And Arrows In my opinion Instructional design models are not just boxes and arrows, they have practical value in real life instructional design projects and to clarify that, I will first of all define what is instructional design, define instructional analysis, define instructional design models, discuss component of models and finally using one of the most widely known and used instructional design model to create a practical real life instructional design project with topic titled ENGLISH LANGUAGE SENTENCES AND PHRASES. Instructional design is defined as a system using learning theory that creates specifications for the development and implementation of learning experiences, materials, and environments (Whitmyer, 1999). According to Dick and Carey, An instructional analysis is a set of procedures that, when applied to an instructional goal, results in the identification of the relevant steps for performing a goal and the subordinate skills required for a student to achieve the goal Thus, the instructional analysis breaks the skills described in your goal statement down into smaller steps, and then identifies any other relevant skills that might be necessary. The instructional analysis is developed from your goal statement, which highlights the importance of making sure your goal statement is well written and worthwhile. Dick and Carey actually break the instructional analysis step into two parts: Goal Analysis and Subordinate Skills Analysis. Instructional design models serve as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Dormant Threat of Smallpox Introduction/Background/History: Small Pox is an infectious disease that causes a fever and rash. The term pox comes from the Latin word for spotted. It also refers to the raised bumps that appear on the face and body of an infected person. Small Pox is cause by the Variola virus that appeared many years ago. There are two rudimentary patterns of small pox: Variola minor and Variola major, which is the worst and most common of the two. The earliest known death was Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses. Could it be a coincidence that the disease also originated from Eygpt? Edward Jenner was the man in 1796. He was experimenting and proved that small pox was closely related to cow pox. He would then make a key breakthrough in his discovery by concluding that it would protect against smallpox. Small Pox out breaks have been going on ever since the Egyptians; however, eradication of the disease has become a worldwide look. The last case of the disease in the United States was in 1949. Women And Their Roles During The Second Industrial Revolution Women and Their Roles in the Second Industrial Revolution When discussing history, it is often assumed that the history of men is also the history of women. Historians often forget that women constantly experience historical processes differently because of the roles that they play and their biological differences. The second Industrial Revolution affected women uniquely, and their involvement and contributions were distinctive as well. The second Industrial Revolution lead to many advantages and disadvantages for women, it changed the types of work women performed, changed their attitudes about working, men s attitudes towards them working, and their status and function in the family structure was transformed as well. Along with the technical and economic advancements during the Industrial Revolution was a social change that occurred for women, being the impetus for more progressive movements, empowerment, and the fight for equality in a patriarchal society. Throughout time, there have been many revolutions; the Puritan Revolution, the French Revolution, Urban Revolution, Commercial Revolution, Scientific Revolution, and Computer Revolution to name just a few. Of all these nonpolitical revolutions, the one with the longest and widest currency is doubtless the Industrial Revolution (Stewart, pg. 1). This varied nature can stem from the characteristics of the criminal being inherently different. However, the actual crime commission can play a role in how offenders think about crime. This same thought process is true for how an offender makes the decision to engage in criminal activity. There are countless variables and factors that are moving and connected at any given time, that can result in the engagement of criminal behavior and/or activity. However, as we have learned this half of the semester, an often used method by white collar criminals in their decision making process, as well as their own personal thought process about their crime, often times can center around varied thoughts of deniability. Benson (1985), states that normally with white collar crimes there is not necessarily a lengthy search of who committed the crime, the primary focus is why. However, a great deal of the offenders use some tactic of deniability to describe their decision making process during the commission of their crimes. For example, some offenders deny that the person they embezzled from had enough money as it is, therefore denial of a victim, which allowed the continuance of criminal behavior, activity, and obviously thinking patterns. The deniability aspect can branch further into allowing the offender to not feel shame for his or her actions, which is why they felt secure in committing the crime in the first place. Also, they did not believe that there was actually a victim, for example a top executive stealing millions from customers. In a novel filled with complicated human emotions, ambiguous endings, and constant symbolism Murakami also adds in a multitude of musical references most prominently from the band The Beatles. While it s easy to overlook these references as unimportant character traits it becomes apparent as the novel continues that music is purposely bound to this novel for a distinctive purpose. In the novel Norwegian Wood by Haruki Marakami music is used to mirror characters, foreshadow, and be used as dramatic irony. Norwegian Wood is not only the title of Haruki Murakami s novel but it is also the first Beatles song we hear in the book. The song immediately becomes a important and integral part of the story because it what originally takes us into Toru s memories of Naoko. One of the first details Toru recalls when thinking about his time in the meadow with Naoko after hearing the song is seeing, Two bright red birds leap startled from the center of the meadow and dart into the woods (Murakami, 6). While this may seem like an unnecessary detail it is important to note that the song Norwegian Wood s full title is actually Norwegian Wood (This Bird has Flown) . I think a helpful method of trying to find the definition of Ἔρως is to look at the agencies, symptoms, and remedies. As shown earlier, we can say that the agent of Ἔρως is Aphrodite. Aphrodite is the goddess of love. This being the case, we can say that Ἔρως is either love, or a form of love. In order to see whether or not it is love or a form of love, we must look at the symptoms. The symptoms as stated earlier of Ἔρως are courage, desire, and being a pursuer. It seems that although these three symptoms are different, they all tend to be similar to the idea of desire. This is shown because all people do things in order to achieve an apparent good (which may or may not be good in reality.) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From this then, we can say that Ἔρως produces desire in people. Finally, we will analyze the remedies of Ἔρως. It has been stated earlier that the remedy of Ἔρως is to fulfill one s desires. For example, we say that an axe is an axe if it can cut down a tree by swinging, or a chair is a thing we sit on. If we change the function of a thing, then we also change what the thing is. One scene in particular achieved this goal completely. During one of the final scenes of the film, Szpilman is in hiding, and attempts to open a can of soup. He creeps out of his hiding spot in an old abandoned house to find something to open the can with. As he attempts to pry the can open, he falls directly in the sight of an SS Officer. Instead of shooting him, the officer asks Szpilman a few questions, resulting in Szpilman playing piano for the Nazi. As tense and emotional as this scene is to watch, the audience also receives a moment of joy. Polanski uses a high angle to give the audience the impression that they too are looking down on Szpilman as he plays the piano, making him look even weaker and trapped than he already was. However, the camera angle then alternates, showing the audience the Nazi officer and Szpilman on the same level, allowing us a brief moment of tenderness in an otherwise violent and depressing world. As Szpilman plays, direct sunlight illuminates him, highlighting the pain and anguish written on his face. (2:01 2:07) This scene is certainly romanticized from the original version as told to us by Szpilman. In his memoir, he declares, Do what you like to me. I m not leaving from here. • 25. The Is A Hot Topic Across The World Essay Equality is a hot topic across the world. Not only concerning gender, but in regard to social class, race, disability, income, and ethnic group, among others. In Canada, we like to think of ourselves as a country as progressive in that aspect. In actuality, however, this is not as necessarily true as we would like to think. After the 2011 Election, female representation in the House was at 26%. While this seems good at first, it is still below what the United Nations recommends as ideal for a shift in policy and government (Anderssen, 2015). Moreover, some political scientists estimate that it will be another century at least before Canada achieves gender parity (Anderssen, 2015). Considering this, what exactly could be done to accelerate our nation s movement toward egalitarianism for all? One such idea is that of reserving certain seats in the House of Commons for members of specific groups (women, natives, etc). Almost invariably, however, a host of problems follows along in its shadow. The mission of this essay is to analyse the positives and negatives of this approach towards equality within the government, as well as to extrapolate whether or not it should be enacted within the Canadian government using examples from overseas and across the border. Reservation Policy 101 In a nutshell, policies meant to reserve positions within the government are put into action in order to combat discrimination, ensure fairness between those of the majority as well ... The article that I will be reviewing for the third discussion day is titled, Improving Older Adults Memory Performance Using Prior Task Success. This research was completed by Lisa Geraci and Tyler M. Miller, two researchers from Texas A M University. In order to better understand their work, it will be benefical to look at some of the background information on the topic. When it comes to older adults, one of the aspects that can affect memory is stereotypes. In their work, the researchers provided a thorough review of this phenomenon, which was labeled as stereotype threat effect. On a whole, this is when knowledge of a stereotype influences behavior. For example, experimentally activating negative stereotypes of aging can cause ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For the task success condition, participants were given a package containing 30 sets of five scrambled words. Next, they were instructed to arrange the word to rearrange the words to form a grammatically correct four word sentence. Participants in this condition had an unlimited amount of time to complete the task. In contrast, the task failure condition had 10 seconds to complete the task. This was half the time that it took participants in the task success condition to arrange a sentence. Moreover, the control group did not receive this task to complete. After this task, all participants completed a memory experiment. For the experiment, the participants were given a list of 30 words. They had 2 minutes to evaluate this list after which they had to write down as many words as they could remember. For the results, the researchers found that there was a statistically significant difference between the groups. Specifically, older adults in the task success group had better recall than the control and task failure groups. Additionally, the older adults who experienced prior task failure did not have worse memory recall than the control group. Although these results posed true for the older adults, they did not extend to the younger adults. In regards to these results, the researchers theorized a couple potential reasons why these relationships exist. First, they reasoned that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As young Americans, we never received the chance to actually know what it was like to live in that era. Learning about the past times helps us understand what we did not go through ourselves. In order to receive the best chance at learning about the times, one should look at actual representations of what life was like. For example, if a person was interested in learning about World War II, that person should find it in his or her best interest to look at World War II posters. • 31. Identity In The Film Moonlight Identity is transitional. Not one identity is held constant throughout one s life. Thus, the intersectionality of one s identity conveys how complicated humans are. This complex nature of humans is brought to life in the movie Moonlight. Directed by Barry Jenkins, this coming of age film explores the many facets of identity in the main character, Chiron. Chiron is not the only fully thought character; every named character parallels people of all walks of life. Through the intricacies of the characters, stereotypes are presented and shattered. But, the film s central point is not to counter stereotypes. Moonlight tells a story of reality where stereotypes are rooted in truth. Consequently, Moonlight plays into a majority of stereotypes of class, race, gender, and sexual orientation. The first set of stereotypes that all the characters back are those associated with class. Lower class people are often affiliated with little to no savings, renting properties, and living in the inner city. In the first chapter of the film, i. Little, Chiron runs into an abandoned apartment that is known as a crack hole. This gives context into where Chiron lives: the inner city, and more closely related to the ghetto. Chiron returns home to a barred window apartment complex. He is merely a child who has no control over his home, so this situation speaks more upon his mother, Paula. After a few days of being introduced, she sells the television set to use for drug money. To take a bath, Chiron heats the water on the stove and uses dish soap. It is obvious that this family is a stereotypical low class family. In the second chapter, ii. Chiron, Paula in a similar situation, but a smaller, more run down apartment complex. She physically and emotionally abuses Chiron for money. This aspect ties into the intersectionality of being a low class African American. The stereotype that correlates to this issue is the crack victim. Paula s need for money stems from a need of crack. Her addiction has run her family into the bleak stereotypes of low class. In chapter three, iii. Black, we are invited into the home of Chiron s friend, Kevin. Kevin is similar to Paula in how he lives in a barred apartment complex, but he has a steady ... The Medea, The Oresteia, Antigone, and other classic works of Grecian tragoidia all involve huge components of violence in many prominent places, and for all of these stories, violent action is an integral part of the play. Medea, especially, is a character worthy of note in this regard; her tumultuous life can be plotted accurately along a path of aggression and passionate fits, and her bloody history lends tension and ascendance to the cathartic events of the gripping Medea. In contrast to this turbulent streak of brutality in Grecian tragedy stands the world of Greek comedy. Violence in comedy is just as much a part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In comparison to this is Lysistrata, a comedy in which violence is not shown to be an answer that works. In this story, however, the overarching dilemma is the existence of the Peloponnesian War. For Euripides, violence is a question and a centerpiece of intrigue, yet it is not the root of the plot. Aristophanes, on the other hand, chooses to investigate gender relations and the concerns of daily life by using a hollow context of violence that ostensibly motivates the actions of the characters while avoiding center stage as an issue of any weight in the play itself. At first glance this analysis seems wrong: it appears that Lysistrata is very much concerned with violence. After all, Aristophanes intended to write an anti war piece. However, while this statement is technically true, it is only a skin deep realization. In actuality, Lysistrata herself is not anti war in the sense of being ideologically opposed to war; she is anti war only insofar as she detests the Peloponnesian War. And yet, although the Mede is at our gates, / You ruin Greece with mad intestine wars. / This is my first reproach to both of you, (Aristophanes 1132) says Lysistrata to the assembled Spartan and Athenian ambassadors. • 34. Germ Theory Of Disease By Robert Koch And Louis Pasteur Introduction In the nineteenth century, two famous scientists Robert Koch and Louis Pasteur formally demonstrated that microorganisms were the cause of many diseases. This proposition has become known as Germ Theory of Disease . Not that this notion had never been touched before on the contrary, there have been ancient mentions as old as 36 BC from a roman scholar, Marcus Terentius Varro, that stated: certain minute creatures, which cannot be seen by the eyes, which float in the air and enter the body through the mouth and nose, and there cause serious diseases . The concept of Germ Theory of Disease suffered a major overturn in the twentieth century, when Metchnikoff showed that microorganisms could also act as beneficial agents and health promoters. Was there then launched the basis for what we now call probiotics. Thus, today we know we are, one way or the other, vastly colonized by microorganisms. It is certainly clear that these microorganisms are present forming heterogeneous and specific communities over large body surfaces. These colonization processes occur primarily on skin, vagina and the gastrointestinal tract. Even so, our body has a remarkable ability to protect itself against microbial invasions. Within the human body resides a salient protection mechanism called immune system prepared to defend the body against millions of bacteria, viruses, toxins and parasites. One of the most impactful results of the restoration was the allowance of women on stage. Before the restoration women s roles were played by young boys ( Women In Restoration Theatre on WordPress.com. ). As one can imagine the appearance of women on stage did not settle easily with the common population. The first women to hit the European stage, Nell Gwyn, did not make it easy for the people to accept the new change either. Here are some reasons why. Nell Gwyn was born in February 2, 1650. Her father died in a debtor s prison when she was an infant causing her to be raise with her mother in the bawdyhouse of Covent Garden. Nell s sister, Rose, influenced her to become a Orange Girl at Drury Lane Theatre ( Nell Gwyn. ). It did not take long for her talents to be noticed.
