Kai-Fu Lee at AI Frontiers : The Era of Artificial IntelligenceAI Frontiers
In this talk, I will talk about the four waves of Artificial Intelligence (AI) , and how AI will permeate every part of our lives in the next decade. I will also talk about how this will be different from previous technology revolutions -- it will be faster and be driven by not one superpower, but two (US and China). AI will add $16 trillion to our global GDP, but also cause many challenges that will be hard to solve. I will talk in particular about AI replacing routine jobs -- the consequences, the proposed solutions that don't work (such as UBI), and end with a blueprint of co-existence between humans and AI.

This paper contends that the real understanding of natural language and the fulfillment of cloud computing cannot be reached without dealing with the significant sentimental factor. This paper points out that the achievement and enjoyment of cloud computing is highly reliant on break throughs in advanced intelligence. In this paper, advanced intelligence refers to the high level of interaction between natural intelligence and artificial intelligence.
We introduce intelligent computing language in the software so that machines can take decisions autonomously and in real time. By applying artificial intelligence to the cloud, we are hoping to develop a system through which computers can manage themselves. For example, computer scientists are looking to develop software that follows computers’ power consumption and regulates their operation according to the specific needs at any given time, thus reducing energy expenditure.
Implanting artificial intelligence into codes that will run in the cloud to improve efficiency is one of the strong research lines. Its part of a drive to create applications, executed in the cloud that goes beyond basic automation to anticipate situations and take decisions in real time over the Internet. IBM's strategy is shaped by three strategic beliefs: new buyers and new markets including growth markets and city leaders, new ways of working focused on client experience and smarter enterprises, and what they sell including smarter solutions and cities. IBM continues to remix its portfolio to reflect these beliefs by exiting commoditized businesses and investing in acquisitions and capabilities in areas like business analytics and optimization. IBM's research division is the engine driving its strategy to build a smarter planet by provoking conversations with all constituents around instrumented, interconnected and intelligent systems.

End-to-end pipeline agility - Berlin Buzzwords 2024Lars Albertsson
We describe how we achieve high change agility in data engineering by eliminating the fear of breaking downstream data pipelines through end-to-end pipeline testing, and by using schema metaprogramming to safely eliminate boilerplate involved in changes that affect whole pipelines.
A quick poll on agility in changing pipelines from end to end indicated a huge span in capabilities. For the question "How long time does it take for all downstream pipelines to be adapted to an upstream change," the median response was 6 months, but some respondents could do it in less than a day. When quantitative data engineering differences between the best and worst are measured, the span is often 100x-1000x, sometimes even more.
A long time ago, we suffered at Spotify from fear of changing pipelines due to not knowing what the impact might be downstream. We made plans for a technical solution to test pipelines end-to-end to mitigate that fear, but the effort failed for cultural reasons. We eventually solved this challenge, but in a different context. In this presentation we will describe how we test full pipelines effectively by manipulating workflow orchestration, which enables us to make changes in pipelines without fear of breaking downstream.
Making schema changes that affect many jobs also involves a lot of toil and boilerplate. Using schema-on-read mitigates some of it, but has drawbacks since it makes it more difficult to detect errors early. We will describe how we have rejected this tradeoff by applying schema metaprogramming, eliminating boilerplate but keeping the protection of static typing, thereby further improving agility to quickly modify data pipelines without fear.

Open Source Contributions to Postgres: The Basics POSETTE 2024ElizabethGarrettChri
Postgres is the most advanced open-source database in the world and it's supported by a community, not a single company. So how does this work? How does code actually get into Postgres? I recently had a patch submitted and committed and I want to share what I learned in that process. I’ll give you an overview of Postgres versions and how the underlying project codebase functions. I’ll also show you the process for submitting a patch and getting that tested and committed.
