3. DEFINITION
SOIL POLLUTION IS
DEFINED AS THE CHANGE
IN PHYSICAL ,CHEMICAL
AND BIOLOGICAL CONDITIONS
OF THE SOIL THROUGH
MAN’S INTERVENTATION RESULTING
IN DEGRADATION IN QUALITY.
4. CAUSES OF SOIL POLLUTION
NATURAL CAUSES
1)LANDSLIDES
2)HURRICANES.
6. INDUSTRIAL WASTE:
Discharge of large quantities of
Toxic,flammable,non-biodegradable
On land result in soil pollution.
MINING:
Mining refers to process by which
Non-renewable substances and
Valuable minerals are extracted from
Earth.it leads to change in compo-
Sition of soil.
7. AGRICULTURAL WASTE:
Wastes like leaves,grass..and chemical
Fertilizers like pesticides,insecticides
For agriculture.
DOMESTIC WASTE:
It includes wastes such as food,
Paper,glass,plastic material….
Contribute to soil pollution.
9. EFFECTS OF SOIL POLLUTION:
1)Disposal of Industries waste on fertile lands degrades
the quality of soil.
2)Urban waste slowly poison the soil, damaging
its fertility.
3)Radiactive elements that present in polluted soil
enter food chain through plants.
10. CONTROL MEASURES:
1.Bio degradable waste used for biogas and nonbiodegradable
Waste may be recycled.
2.Planting of Trees must be encouraged.
3.Disposal of hazardous radioactive waste into soil should be
Prohibited.
4.Solid waste can also be used for electricity generation.
5.Use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides should be
Minimised.
