The Global City
Why Globalization is Spatial?
 occurs in physical spaces
 you can see it when foreign investments and capital
move through a city, and when companies build
skyscrapers
 people who are working in theses businesses start
to purchase or rent high-rise condominium units and
better homes
 more people are driven out of city centers to make
way for the new developments.
4
Why Globalization is Spatial?
 it is based in places
 Los Angeles, the home of Hollywood
where movies are made for global
consumption
 Tokyo, the main headquarters of Sony
where this company coordinates the sale
of its various electronics goods to
branches across the world
 In 1950, only 30 percent of the world lived
in urban cities?
 By 2014, the number increased to 54
percent?
 And by 2050, it is expected to reach 66
percent?
5
Defining the Global City
 the term, “global city” was popularized by
Sociologist Saskia Sassen
 what constitutes a global city is primarily based on
economic (economy)
 New York City, London, and Tokyo were initially
identified as three global cities
 hubs for global finance and capitalism
 homes for the world’s top stock exchanges were
investors sell shares in major corporations
 New York (New York Stock Exchange)
 London (Financial Times Stock Exchange)
 Tokyo (Nikkei)
6
 Los Angeles, can now rival the Big Apple’s cultural
influence
 San Francisco, home of the most powerful internet
companies – Facebook, Twitter, and Google
 Growth of the Chinese economy has turned cities
like Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou into centers
of trade and
 others consider some cities as “global” because
they are great places to live in
 Sydney, commands the greatest proportion of
capital in Australia
 Melbourne, many magazines and lists have referred
this city as “most livable city” in Australia” – a place
with good public transportation, a thriving cultural
scene, and a relatively easy pace of life.
7
Indicators for Globality
 economic power
 largely determines which cities are global
 New York City may have the largest stock market in
the world but Tokyo houses the most number (613
company / corporate) of headquarters
 Shanghai may have a smaller stock market
compared to New York and Tokyo, but plays a
critical role in the global economic supply chain ever
since China has become the manufacturing center
of the world
 has the world’s busiest container port, moving 33
million container units in 2013.
8
Indicators for Globality
 economic opportunity
 make it attractive to talents (skilled) from across the
world
 many of the top IT programmers and engineers
from Asia have moved to San Francisco Bay Area
to become key figures in Silicon Valley’s technology
boom London remains a preferred destination for
many Filipinos with nursing degrees
9
Indicators for Globality
 economic competitiveness
 pertains to market size, purchasing power of
citizens, size of the middle class, and potential for
growth (The Economic Intelligence Unit)
 Singapore City, considered as Asia’s most
competitive city because of its strong market,
efficient and incorruptible government and livability
 houses the regional offices of many major global
corporations
10
Indicators of Globality
 centers of authority
 Washington D.C. may not as wealthy as New York,
but it is the seat of American state power
 major landmarks: White House, the Capitol Building
(Congress), the Supreme Court, the Lincoln
Memorial, and the Washington Monument
 Canberra, a sleepy town and not attractive to
tourists but it is the seat of Australia’s political
capital, home of country’s top politicians,
bureaucrats, and policy advisors
11
Indicators of Globality
 centers of political influence
 houses major international organizations
 New York, headquarters of United Nations (UN)
 Brussels, headquarters of the European Union (EU)
 Jakarta, headquarters of Association of Southeast
Asian Nations (ASEAN)
 Frankfurt, based the European Central Bank (ECB)
12
Indicators of Globality
 centers of higher learning and culture
 city’s intellectual influence is seen through the
influence of publishing industry
 many of the books that people read are published in
New York, London, or Paris
 New York Times (New York City)
 Boston, houses the Harvard University, world’s top
university
 Australia, houses the leading English language
universities
 cultural power
 one can try cuisines from different parts of the world
13
Challenges of Global Cities
 sites of great inequality and poverty as well
as tremendous violence
 can be sustainable because of their density
 “Ecologists have found that by concentrating
their populations in smaller areas, cities, and
metros decrease human encroachment on
natural habitats” – Richard Florida
 some cities like Los Angeles are urban
sprawls, with massive freeways that force
residents to spend money on cars and gas
 Manila, Bangkok, and Mumba’s lack of public
transportation and their governments’
inability to regulate their car industries have
made them extremely polluted
 targeted by terror attacks
Global Demography:
Trends and Patterns
14
Population
 refers to the distinct group of individuals,
whether that group comprises a nation or a
group of people with a common characteristic.
 In 1950, the global population stood over 2
billion?
 In 2005, the global population stood to 6.5
billion?
 And by 2050, it is expected the global
population to reach 9.1 billion?
 95 percent of population growth occurs in
developing countries (see Figure 1).
 By contrast, the population of developed
countries is expected to remain steady at
around 1.2 billion, with population declines in
some rich countries.
