medical science, communication etc. Every day new inventions are made. The entire Globe has
become interconnected but the mankind still remains divided on various issues such as wealth,
caste, religion, education, availability of resources etc. Of late, mankind is busy learning ‘The
Art of Living’. I don’t remember having heard this concept of ‘The Art of Living’ from my
parents. However now in spite of obtaining higher education, it is a pity that we have to learn
this Art. Now it’s time to learn & master ‘The Art of Giving’ for the betterment of mankind.
Seminars imparting training of Art of Living are conducted across the globe, thereby assisting
mankind to reduce stress. Other charitable and social activities are also carried out and attempt
is made to reduce the difference between masses & classes. I really salute these social workers
for carrying out this Herculean task. However I am not aware about any seminars imparting
the necessary skills to master ‘The Art of Giving.’
Friends, you will agree that every individual is unique. In fact, person himself has more chance
of reaching to its solution and hence I personally feel every one should learn this ‘Art of
Giving’ in his own style.
I am an ordinary person like you and can’t offer any rules of the game. However I am still
confident of assisting you because of my unique style of observing people, nature, attitudes,
stress situations, making its analysis and striking a practical solution and documenting the
entire episode.
I will make an attempt to place before you various real time situations, problems, attitudes,
stress situations etc. You should think seriously on every point, note down the thought process
and decide your ‘Art or Style of Giving’. Best wishes in advance.
Life is nothing but a Game of Give & Take. We have been learning the Art of receiving since
childhood. Think of our journey from childhood to adult. We have been receiving the necessary
facilities, amenities, education, love, affection etc. from our parents, family members, teachers
etc. Hence, you must understand the importance of ‘Giving’ once you are on your own.
2. Spandane - The Art of Giving2
Now, before I turn my focus to the subject proper, let me touch upon few points of ‘Giving.’
I would advice that it is better to abstain yourself from this part of ‘The Art of Giving’.
1) Let us take close look at our bad habits. e.g. smoking. The smoker exhales smoke in the
process and spoils the atmosphere. Passive smoking is equally bad for the near & dear ones. So
please control your smoking and gradually stop the habit. Similarly, bad habits such as
excessive drinking, chewing tobacco should be avoided to save the precious health & hard
earned money.
2) We depend on Nature. But are we taking due care of the Nature and giving even due respect
to Nature? Take necessary steps to conserve the Nature. Do not throw the garbage outside
whenever you go out for picnic. Keep the surrounding area of your building clean.
3) Avoid excessive/ over spending in functions of any kind & by whatever name called.
4) Do not store anything in excess. Friends, kindly note the word ‘anything’.
5) Do not indulge in outward corruption by whatever name called. e.g. admission donation for
the kids, friendship gift etc.
6) You should not pass on your Greed to others.
This list is only illustrative but you should constantly keep your eye on such wasteful
‘Giving’.
Now, let us focus the discussion on the subject proper namely mastering ‘The Art of Giving’.
I am aware that each one of you must be already carrying out the activity of ‘Giving’ as Life
is nothing but a Game of Give & Take, but you need to master ‘The Art of Giving.’
GIVING is a very simple way of experiencing it. As a friend & well wisher of you, I want you
to start doing something about GIVING in your life. It could be in form of money, time, love &
affection, skills and or any other form. Share some thing out of whatever you have. What you
share and how much has less importance. You can find out someone/something where your
GIVING can make a significant change in someone's life.
We should remember the ‘Contribution’ made by our parents, teachers, relatives, and society in
shaping our career and making us as an individual of active habits. We owe thanks to these

people. This debt can never be repaid. The only way to repay this debt partly is by doing
something for the society, carrying our job whole heartedly, sincerely with full synchronization
of mind and body. Their contribution in our Life can not be measured in pecuniary terms. Now
it is our turn to do perform the similar function by ‘Giving’.
Are you giving as much as you received / receiving? Just ask your Mind and give the answer.
☺ There is no threshold limit. One can Give as per individual capacity. What to give and how
much to give would vary from person to person. What is important is ‘Giving – Sharing.’
Now let me highlight few areas of ‘Giving’:
1) Knowledge Sharing: You can be a Teacher and Student at the same time. There is always
some scope to learn from others irrespective of age, education, sex, religion etc. We can share
our knowledge at one end and gather the knowledge –information from others. One can do this
exercise at home, school, college, office-workplace etc. There is nothing like remaining a humble
student all through Life.
2) Give Donations: We should cultivate the habit of giving donations. Parents should teach
this habit to their kids. We know that Income – Tax = Net Income. Saving and small donation
should be the first charge on your net income. Donate regularly to good Charitable Trusts. You
can bear the education expenses of needy student. May be your servant’s kid. Minimum Cash
Donations to Temple should be given and donation to temples in kind should be totally
avoided. Out of turn Donations should be given immediately at the time of Natural Calamity.
I do not mean that you should necessarily donate money. Donations can be given in kind as
well. Let me make some suggestions in this regard:
2.1) We can donate our old school books to a needy student.
2.2) Many times, we throw away the ball pen after refill gets over. We may insert new refill and
give it to poor kids of our servants etc. (Infact we can also afford to give them new ball pen.)
2.3) Similarly small pencils may be given.
2.4) We generally throw away used clothes – sell them cheaply. (T-shirts, Bush Shirts, Trousers,
Punjabi dress, Sarees etc.) We can donate these used clothes to needy persons.
2.5) We dispose off the old furniture, utensils, curtain, carpets etc. after renovation of our flat.
These items still have some useful life and can be used by needy person.
2.6) One can take tuitions for the benefit of poor students. Devote some time weekly for this.
4. Spandane - The Art of Giving4
3) Every person should make it a point to show gratitude, consideration, love & affection to
others irrespective of the location. (i.e. the exercise should ideally move from home to work
place to society.) Make investment in Relations.
4) Show Empathy for others such as your family members, staff –colleagues, friends, relatives,
neighbours, service providers etc. Always remember that there are more unfortunate persons
than you. There are always three dimensions to any person, problem. Please bear this in mind.
5) One can take part in social service. One need not become active worker-follower of any
political party for doing social service. Even sweeping the area in front of the flat (in case the
sweeper does not turn up) can be the social service. One can think and decide his own area.
Please remember that you are at the centre point of the society.
6) One can think of donating blood regularly on the occasion of birthday or wedding
anniversary. One can donate eyes after death. Even body can be donated to Medical college
after death. All of us know of Dr. Tatyasaheb Lahane’s (well known eye surgeon & dean of J J
Hospital) mother had donated a kidney to him. Hats off to the lady and doctor for his social
service in medical field. Friends, I have already donated my eyes after death. This declaration
was made / registered way back in 1984 after my marriage. I am happy to state that my wife
also joined me in this mission.
7) We pay the fare to Taxi – Rickshaw driver on reaching the destination. We can say ‘Thank
you’ to him. We can wish service providers, police on duty on the occasion of Diwali, New Year
etc. because when we are in picnic mood, they are performing their job –rendering service to us.
Infact this word ‘Thank You’ should be as widely used as possible.
8) Spend your free time with parents, kids. If you are very busy in your occupation, then make
it a point to spare atleast some time in a week for them. Give undivided attention to their talk.

9) We all work for Food, Clothing and Shelter. No doubt that we also work for self esteem.
However you will observe that each one may not work with his heart. ‘Bhagwat Geeta’ teach us
3 basic concepts namely Karma, Vikarma & Akarma. Karma is what we do. The same karma
becomes Vikarma when our mind joins the body to carry out the job. In other words, body and

mind should work together to accomplish a wonderful job. When you form this habit of
working with mind and body synchronization, you will not feel the efforts put in, which is
called Akarma. Not only that but you will enjoy the work. You can also enjoy the work when
you like / love the job and you also love the person for whom the job is done. Work sincerely
and with involvement. Give undivided attention to office responsibilities.
10) We depend on Nature. But are we taking due care of the Nature and giving even due
respect to Nature? Take necessary steps to conserve the Nature. We can plant the trees in our
society. Friends, you can log on for ways to Save Green and Live Green. Link:
http://www.spandane.com/misc/ways_to_save_Green_and_Live_Green. Avoid using plastic
bags.
11) We can offer diwali sweets and small gifts to service providers to our home such as society
watchman, sweeper, laundry man, courier boy, newspaper boy, milkman, postman, telephone
mechanic, garage mechanic etc. Please remember that our life is smooth because of all these
service providers. Just think of the situation when some of them decide to go on strike. Their
job is more demanding due to time constraints. We also feel that they are paid for the job. Same
argument hold good for us. We also get paid but still accept Diwali gifts. Why?
12) We can spend some time with Senior Citizens in the house, in the society or staying at
Senior Citizen Homes.
13) You can think of having lunch with your colleagues or even with your assistants. You can
share your Tiffin or may carry some special dish for them occasionally. This will improve the
staff morale and your respect in their mind.
14) You should cultivate the habit of sharing in your kids, right from very young age such as
sharing gift, chocolate, toys etc.
15) Doing your own day to day household chores & offering helping hand to your spouse in
discharging the family responsibilities would also fall in this category of ‘Giving’
Friends you will agree that this Topic is very vast but you will appreciate that I have made a
sincere attempt to introduce the concept of ‘The Art of Giving’ with few suggestions. I am
sure that this article will definitely induce /prompt you to think further on the subject.
