2. The Influence Of Age, Religion, And Intergroup Contact
The Influence of Age, Religion, and Intergroup Contact on Opinions of Same Sex Marriage
INTRODUCTION
The subject of same sex Marriage has made numerous headlines in the most recent years prior to and
following the legalization of the union and acknowledgement of it by the U.S. Government on June
26th 2015 (De Vogue and Diamond 2015). Within the past 5 to 10yrs there has been an increase in
support for what are commonly known as LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) family rights in
the United States, including but not limited to allowing same sex couples to marry and adopt children
legally (Jones, Cox, and Navarro Rivera 2014). Prior to and in light of the recent political and cultural
trends there were evaluations of the meaning of marriage within American society, and especially
marriage as it concerns couples of the same sex. This research is concerned with attitudes towards
homosexuality, particularly towards same sex marriage. In March 2013, a CBS News Poll showed that
53% of Americans supported same sex marriage, 39% of Americans opposed it, and 8% of Americas
remained undecided about the issue (CBS News 2013). The same CBS News Poll was conducted in a
similar fashion again this year 2016 in June. The 2016 CBS News Poll concluded that 58% of
Americans support the legalization of same sex marriage, while 33% are opposed. The 2016 Poll also
found that Americans in nearly every age group think same sex marriage should be legal, except for
those ages 65 and

3. The Most Meaningful Gifts In Chaim Potok s The Chosen
The Most Meaningful Gifts are Hidden in Plain Sight American singer and actress Ethel Waters once
said, We are all gifted. That is our inheritance. Whenever people think of someone as gifted they tend
to think of superpower type qualities. The Chosen, a book written by Chaim Potok, depicts several
different characters pertaining different talents. Characters such as Reuven, Danny, or even Mr. Malter
all possess abilities that help them in life. The types of gifts displayed in the book are not what people
usually think of as special gifts, but a special talent can seem as little as forgiving easily and genuinely
caring for others well being or as big as recalling information at a moments notice. In The Chosen,
characters such as Reuven, Danny, and Mr. Malter all demonstrate certain gifts that they maintain. To
begin with, Reuven Malter demonstrates many of his different types of gifts throughout the story. Two
of the key traits Reuven reveals are the gifts of compassion and the mind for logic. In the beginning of
the book Danny tries to kill Reuven by hitting him with a baseball, however, he later comes and
apologizes to him and Reuven forgives him (Potok, 70). Not everyone, when provided with a chance,
will forgive someone who wronged them. Instead pf clinging onto his resentments Reuven graciously
forgives Danny, an act that requires great compassion to fulfill. Another example of Reuven s gifts is
his ability to solve logic problems, Well, they try to

The Great Plague of London in 1665 was a horrific blow to Londoners. Before this plague would be at
its end, anywhere from 65,000 100,000 people would be dead, 15 percent of London s population. The
Great Plague was an outbreak of the Bubonic Plague, a bacterial infection caused by the Yersinia
pestis bacterium, spread by the oriental rat flea, in the spring and summer of 1665. Bubonic plague is
an infection of the tissues and organs in the human body that help carry away unwanted materials and
toxins, known as the lymphatic system. The flea preys on house and field rats, and once the rat dies,
will catch a ride on a human. The bacteria are harmless to the flea, but passes them to its new prey

5. A Campaign Advisor For An Emerging Political Party Essay
I am a campaign advisor for an emerging political party called the Egalitarian Party of the United
States. This party is still quite new on the political scene and lacks widespread credibility.
Nonetheless, we are hoping to have a definitive impact on the upcoming federal election in the hopes
of generating a strong base of support and priming ourselves for great prosperity in the near future.
For our party, the issue that is of most significant and pressing consequence in United States is that of
income inequality. As a western state, the US currently operates based on capitalist ideals that benefit
large corporations and the wealthiest portion of the population. Although this system looks good on
the surface, it has proven to have debilitating consequences on the vast majority of the population.
Most new wealth being generated goes directly into the pockets of the top 1%, which has caused the
middle class to shrink and has stunted economic development. In order to obtain success, our party
must frame the issue in a strategic and constructive lens that mobilizes voters and engages the
population as we fight for economic equality. Our party will have to be very cognizant of how it
conveys its message if it hopes to gain respect and recognition going forward, and there are a number
of strategies relating to political psychology that will be effective if implemented properly. One of the
most important orders of business in this campaign has to do with finding constructive ways

6. Patriotism In The Film Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
In the current political climate, anything said against the government is deemed unpatriotic by certain
areas of the culture. Patriotism is bandied about as a necessity by some, and derided completely by
others. But what is true patriotism, and how necessary is it? The film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,
made in 1939, was originally condemned for being unpatriotic as it showed the ugly side of American
democratic politics at a time where democracies were falling all over Europe. However, the film
presents a different view of patriotism that supports the most important part of democracy; the people.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington clearly demonstrates the failures and problems in American
democracy, but paints protagonist Jefferson Smith as extremely patriotic, illustrating that patriotism is
not a blind stubborn belief that a country is right all of the time, but a wholehearted passion for
making said country a better place. This view of patriotism may have seemed critical in 1939, but the
movie effectively shows how the citizens really are the most important part of a democracy, and how
they can rail against political corruption to truly create a better country. When protagonist Jefferson
Smith very suddenly becomes a US Senator, he is portrayed as the perfect example of nominal
patriotism. He has several speeches by Washington and Lincoln memorized, is the leader of a group of
what are basically Boy Scouts, and spends his first day in Washington DC in awe of the monuments.

7. Comparing Revelation On The Relationship Of Church And State
Paper 1: Comparing Revelation to Eusebius on the Relationship of Church and State
After reading chapters twelve through thirteen and seventeen through nineteen from the book of
Revelation, I have attained knowledge that allows me to see how the author of Revelation perceives
the Roman Empire. From the beginning of chapter twelve it is clearly portrayed that the woman who
is in the sky, about to give birth, is meant to symbolize Mary the mother of Jesus, or even Israel, the
birthplace of Jesus. The Dragon of course, represents Satan. When the Dragon is thrown down to
Earth due to its repulsive actions of trying to harm the woman s baby, it decides to make war against
the faithful Christians. As the story progresses in chapter thirteen, a ... Show more content on

Overall, the Roman Empire is perceived as an evil given its unruly authority and power from Satan
himself. Rome s relationship with Satan (the Dragon) is viewed as a partnership. Satan and the Roman
Empire both wanted to persecute Christians, and Satan provided Rome with the opportunity to do so
by giving them such power and authority over everything. Men worshipped the dragon because he had
given authority to the beast, and they all worshiped the beast (Revelation 13:4 New International
Version). Although Rome pretty much had this partnership with Satan, God/Jesus was and is still in
control and that s what chapter nineteen in the book of Revelation reassures for its readers. After this I
heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting (Revelation 19:1 New
International Version). This is a victory song and also assurance to the persecuted Christians of Asia
Minor that God is still in control and always will be and that everything will fall into place when the
time is right and when he plans for it to. God defeated the whore of Babylon and therefore defeated
the Roman Empire once and for all.
I believe that there were major social and historical factors that played a crucial role in influencing the
writing of the book of Revelation due to the fact that there was so much past heat between Christians
and the Roman Empire. There were several

to 5% of them. Large pension funds may not be willing to separate its asset into small pieces because
it will rise the cost of management. Equinox s marketing point The most attractive marketing point
should be the fee structure. Equinox s MER is much lower than other pension funds. Getting paid
based on the return of the fund instead of the size can effectively eliminate the agency problem since it
aligns the interest of clients and managers. Clients can see greater opportunities to get higher return by
investing in Equinox. 2 Equinox should provide lower MER or it can show no strength compared to
the existing big pension funds. Option 4 is too risky for Henne given current market environment. He
may not be able to cover the cost if the market has not come out of the downturn. 3 Equinox needs

10. Examples Of Andy In Shawshank Redemption
An individual s personality or persona is created through a combination of events a person would
receive from society, and how the individual absorbs these events gives the bases for that individual to
develop hishers persona. In the novella, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, Stephen King
uses the character Andrew Dufresne to demonstrate the influence society has on the development of a
person s persona or identity. When change of social environment occurs to an individual, it is natural
reaction for the individual to climb the social chain, so that they may find contentment. The first time
Andy talks with Red, and Andy is still new and is faced with the drastic change in environment and
the way of communication being less formal, thus making Andy look more of a snob to other inmates
at Shawshank, an Red s thoughts Andy had a reputation for being a [snob] and a [cold fish]. (King 20).
The words cold fish and snob are used to clearly describe how the character Andy is seen by others, is
used by King to present the readers a starting point for which the character Andy can build up from
and develop a new persona. Once an individual finds their place in the new environment, society
molds the individual into a working part of the social chain. The day Andy, Red, and a couple of
others were working on the top of a roof, and Andy overheard one of the guards talking about the
fortune he had made, but complaining about the income taxes. Andy agrees with the guard, that

11. Mythology Research of Egyptian God Amun-Re Essay
Amun Re is often referred to as the most important and powerful god of Ancient Egypt. Amun Re was
the god of the sun. Amun Re is the main name of the sun god, but also has three different names in
which describe the phases of life that Amun Re goes through each day. (Budge, Pg. 92) When
examining the ancient Egyptian god Amun Re, four main points must be understood, including: the
origin of Amun Re, the characteristics of Amun Re, how Amun Re was worshiped, and how Amun Re
impacted Egyptian life. First, is the discussion of the origin of Amun Re. Re, is an ancient Egyptian
solar deity (also spelled Ra ). Re s association with the sun meant that he was understood to be an

The last role of Amun Re was Re as the creator. Egyptians believed that Re would weep and when he
did so his tears would then turn to men. Re is also seen to be the creator of the seasons, months, plants,
and animals. This falls back to the fact that Re is the sun, and the sun signifies life and growth,
allowing all things to grow through life. Second, I will be discussing the characteristics of Amun Re.
Re is depicted as a man with a hawk head and a headdress with a large sun disk. The sun disk on his
headdress is to reference his continuous power and control of the sun. The Egyptians were not
senseless; they did not think that a man or chariot raced across the sky dragging the sun to its resting
point.
Egyptians needed a way to understand the phenomenon of the sun due to their lack of scientific
knowledge. They tended to use animals to describe certain characteristics of a god. This was
especially the case with the ones they cannot see. Thebes celebrated a different major god Amun, the
Hidden One with powers so great he could not be visualized, yet because he had to be represented in
some way in order to pay him homage, he was depicted as a man with a tall ostrich plume crown.
(Brier, Pg. 36). Third, I will be discussing how Amun Re was worshiped in ancient Egypt. Amun Re is
seen in five ways, first, as a man, this is when he is seen on the throne as a king, holding a scepter in
one hand and the symbol of life in the other. In

12. Why Is Swing Better Than Traditional Jazz
A few years later that jazz was born in 1930 another style was created and it is call swing. Also called
the big band era because they used more instruments than early jazz. Why swing was the most popular
style of jazz? The reason was because it gave people that swing feeling they wanted the one that made
people dance. Is swing better than traditional jazz? It may be popular but that does not mean that one
is better than the other it was just different in a way that attract to many people and it is hard to
describe what swing feeling really means. The instrumentation used in swing music consisted in five
saxophones, four trumpets and four trombones as the front line and the rhythm section with the guitar,
bass, piano and drums. This instrumentation gave a strong and hot style that people were crazy about.
Always keeping the essence of jazz improvising and keeping the swing feeling although in swing
there were not collective improvisations. Using more instruments allowed musicians to have an

bands in the swing era could not do collective improvisations bands started to use more arrangements

Silver nitrate and copper metal led to the formation of silver precipitate. We also observed a color
change towards the bottom where the copper was located. These results support that the type of
reaction was single replacement. The second experiment with hydrochloric acid was an example of
decomposition. We observed that the substance started to bubble and so a gas was produced. In the
third experiment Iron oxide was formed. We observed rust on the outside as a result of the oxygen
combing with the iron. This can best be described as synthesis. In the next experiment we discovered
that calcium chloride and magnesium Sulfate produce a substance that looks like milk after it foams.
As a result, we contemplated that this was an example of double replacement. In reaction 5 with Zinc

that this was single replacement. The final experiment was the easiest experiment in my opinion.

The use of computers and fingerprint scanners has been a source of spy thrillers for decades. Recently,
fingerprinting has become pretty fascinating technology in the real world. In the past few years,
however, finger print scanners have started popping up all over the place, such as in federal, state and
local police departments; high security buildings, the background and clearance process and even on
PC keyboards and mobile devices. And while two fingerprints may look similar at a glance, a
professional investigator or cutting edge software can pick out clear, defined differences in a

The actual fingerprint device is used in place of a human analyst that would be collecting a print

electronic devices to replicate a digital image of the fingerprint pattern called a live scan. The

While most theories in criminology focus on the reasons and factors why people commit deviance, the
social control theory focuses on the reasons why people conform to what is excecpted from society.
The social control theory tends to revolve around questions such as why isn t everyone motivated to
commit acts of deviance as well as why individuals conform. The basic premise of the social control
theory is that criminality results when an individual s bond to society is weakened or broken. There
are four social bonds in the social control theory, which are attachment, committment, belief and
involvement. Travis Hirschi agrued that humans are like animals, they can be controlled but can be

In view of the desmoplasia often surrounding these lesions, the distinction between in situ and

three subgroups which seem to correlate with the prognosis: IPC alone, IPC plus DCIS and IPC with

feeling can be experienced? Animal testing involves the use of nonhuman species to research a variety
of products for their positive and negative outcomes. This action is carried on for the benefit of
humanity without the consideration of the animals being involved. Such act features the use of
hazardous practices that harm innocent animals, leaving them psychologically and physically
traumatized. Still, the research is considered practical since it s the closest way scientists can get to
analyze a living body without harming humans. Historically, animals have been used within the
scientific community, and as a result began to press issues regarding what the society of today and its
future hold concerning what is ethical, how animal testing has a significant role on the environment,
and how domestic and foreign economics influence its continuation, modification or elimination in the
United States.
Historical and Political
Animal experimentation can be used to gain further understanding of the biology and anatomy of that
creature or even humans. The notion of animals being able to serve as a model for humans was
supported by Charles Darwin s evolutionary theory in 1859 (Hawkins). Even prior to this theory,
however, surgery on animals became popular in ancient

21. The Usage Of Proper English
1.) I think it is important to strive for both the usage of proper English and to present good ideas as a
criteria for academic papers or in an academic setting. The reason I am convinced that usage of proper
English creates clearer communication is because of my experience in the business world. Through
schooling I have learned how to speak and write better and use words that pertain to the business I
practiced. I have worked in the teaching profession and have experienced what happens when a parent
does not have a clear idea of the educational goals the teach and school has for their child, or the
overall goals that the particular school holds as valuable. I taught in a Montessori School and
Montessori has a particular educational model that each school follows to a certain degree. It is the
owner s prerogative to determine how closely they follow the Montessori Method. Therefore, as a
parent there are several things to be concerned with. 1.) What model did Maria Montessori use? 2.) To
what degree does the school follow the Montessori Method. 3.) Do I understand and agree with the
educational process 4.) What are the goals the Montessori teacher is setting for my child? Therefore,
clear communication is essential in business. .As stated in the article by Exforsys. Why Speaking
Proper English is Important for Your Career. June.6,2007 A number of studies have consistently
demonstrated that those who have an advanced knowledge of the English language are much more

23. The Development Of Emotional Self Regulation Skills
CUSS THE DEVELOPMENT OF EMOTIONAL SELF REGULATION SKILLS IN CHILDREN
DURING THEIR SCHOOL YEAR
Have you ever wondered why, when someone gets you upset you do not act out in public or just go
beating the person? Well, that is because of your emotional self regulation. On the other hand, when
an infant gets upset they tend to throw a temper tantrum the reason being their emotional regulation
skills are still developing and this where the help of the parents or care givers are needed to help these
infants and young children successfully develop their regulation skills (Kagan Snidman, 2004).
Emotion regulation is a very important variable in student functioning that practitioners in education
and psychologist have not fully understood or successfully addressed (Macklem 2008). Young
children need emotion regulation skills most in their peer interactions, fitting into peer groups is very
important for a young child s emotional adjustments as well being successful academically (Macklem
2008).
Researches in this field are yet to agree on a uniform definition for emotions self regulations, thought
they all seem to agree upon the fact that it involves the the control of an individual s emotion.
Emotional psychologist Macklem Gayle defines emotional regulation as how people are able to
control which emotions are experienced, how and when they feel the emotions, and the ways they
express these emotions both consciously and unconsciously. Emotional self regulation is the ability to

24. My Experience At Lakeland Community College
Looking back on every class, every book, every professor, every experience and every friend that has
brought me to where I am today; graduating with my Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies with
a concentration in applied communication from Kent State University, I feel overwhelmed with
gratitude. I am going to demonstrate my reflections on my learning experiences, the connections
between my coursework, internship experience, and growth as a communicator while focusing on the
power that education has in my life.
My journey began at Lakeland Community College (LCC) in Kirtland, Ohio in 2011. I started taking
general courses, not knowing which direction would be the best for me to go into. This would be my
greatest obstacle to overcome, but I knew with certainty that I would soon find out which direction to
set sail in. I spent two years at LCC and gained confidence in my abilities and suddenly realized my
great potential through all the doors that education started to open for me. I had an amazing
opportunity to enter a speaking competition at LCC and placed in first. I realized when my goal was to
give the audience an impactful message and was not focused on winning, that communication was one
of my strongest assets and greatest passion. Discovering this was a primary blessing and actually
winning the competition became a secondary delight.

27. The Struggle Between Protestantism And Pluralism
The struggle between Protestantism and pluralism in the 19th century
In the 19th century, America was experiencing a religious diversity expansion. Religion was an
essential part of the established American culture, gaining great influence on the spiritual lives of
many. For some, religion meant a special interest, as many saw in religion the power to dominate
while others selflessly embraced it as a form to live a harmonious life. Nonetheless, the superiority of
some established religions from the times of the colonies dominated over those seeking to fit in a
Protestant religious culture. Alexis de Tocqueville, was a French statesman, that while visiting
America made a strong observation about the power of religion, he concluded that, One cannot
therefore say that in the United States religion influences the laws or political opinions in detail, but it
does direct mores, and by regulating domestic life it helps to regulate the state. If religion helped
regulate the state, it can be said it contributed a strong element to the seeking of dominance of moral
matters according to the visions of some and exclusion of others. The desire for dominance over
cultural and religious principles, led the Puritan evangelical insiders and non Protestant outsiders into
a religious struggle for spiritual authority in 19th century America. Separation of church and state
guaranteed the right and freedom to practice the desire religion in America. Religions came to light

28. Homecoming Bruce Dawe Analysis
Bruce Dawe is an Australian poet who expressed his anti war standpoint and frustration with society
and individuals through his poetry. He had experience in a wide range of occupations and wrote his
poetry during the late 60 s and early 70 s in order to convey his thoughts on these issues to a broader
audience. This point of view is especially evident in his poem Homecoming which documents the
grief and frustration experienced post war and Weapons training that focusses on a satirical re telling
of the orders of a drill sergeant.
In the poem Homecoming Dawe laments the pointless waste of life as a result of the Vietnam War
while also sympathising in an omnipresent way. In conjunction to this he displays an almost

For example Weapons Training he combines the dehumanisation of soldiers and the harsh nature of
war with blatant racist comments in a way which seems devoid of meaning, however it discusses
deeper issues by disparaging the harsh treatment of these soldiers and the lack of empathy that is
shown to them. There are many examples littered throughout the poem Weapons Training which
expose these underlying themes and techniques which Dawe has used to explicate his point. An
example of one of the aforementioned techniques is the sexual innuendo of when you go down
there...the old crown jewels...because of your position your chances of turning the key in the ignition
considerably reduced? which also incorporates a rhetorical question as its climax. This quote
illustrates the idea that Dawe was employing sarcasm to expand upon his central point in that he
allows the reader to infer what is not explicitly stated and ridicule the way in which the drill sergeant
as the narrator explains how the soldiers must take care in battle, demonstrating the awful treatment of
the new recruits. Following on from this, the drill sergeant utilises a variety of military jargon words
coupled with demoralising comments when speaking to the soldiers. This adds to the harsh feeling of
the poem and highlights the negative attitude of the drill sergeant and his goal of

29. The Black Movement And Women s Liberation Movement
The Black Feminist Movement was formed in response to the rise and success of the Black Civil
Rights Movement and the Women s Liberation Movement. In an era of drastic social reform, many
black women believed that their needs were not being properly addressed. Black Feminism played a
significant role in American History by highlighting the flaws in the various liberation movements that
arose. In doing so, it gave rise to many Black Feminist Organizations which in turn fostered a sense of
accomplishment and effectiveness in the Black Female Community.
In 1973, the Black Feminist Movement was officially established with the founding of the National
Black Feminist Organization (NBFO) in New York. The aim, as stated by The 1973 Statement of
Purpose of the NBFO , was to address ourselves to the particular and specific needs of the larger, but
almost cast aside half of the black race in [America], the black woman. In essence, the NBFO was
founded to call attention to the oppression Black Women experienced and call for social, political, and
economic reform. The specific issues which the Black Feminist Movement focused on included
reproductive rights, sterilization abuse, equal access to abortion, health care, child care, the rights of
the disabled, violence against women, rape, battering, sexual harassment, welfare rights, police
brutality, labor organizing, anti imperialist struggles, anti racist organizing, nuclear disarmament, and

30. Descartes Doubt
Descartes ultimate goal in reaching his conclusions stem from the way he thought. As long as there
was no doubt to reach a conclusion, he was right; so, his process of radical doubt is fully employed in
his Meditations. Dismissing all knowledge that could be doubted however slight, Descartes sought out
to find knowledge that held absolute certainty through questioning. His ultimate question, however, do
we actually exist? How do we know? In his Meditations, one feels that Descartes is sitting around
pondering ideas, and becomes aware that he s being aware. He is interested in this state of awareness,
and notices he s thinking about something or another. He believes or hypothesizes that either God Is
(existing), and is Good, hence would not deceive him; a bad force or entity might be trying to trick
him; in either case he, Descartes, is thinking. He believes he has some control over what he thinks;
thus, God is not fooling him and an evil force is not controlling him. So Descartes asserts, if one
thinks, one has to be somebody to be thinking, so one exists. This conclusion is brought up through a
process known as radical questioning or radical doubting; Descartes is trying to find something that
cannot be found doubtful. He decides he is (exists), and that he is neither influenced totally by either
God or a malevolent force. But how does Descartes reach these conclusions? In Meditation I and
Meditation II, Descartes also argues that our conventional experiences of the

31. Figurative Language In The Poem Juggler By Richard Wilbur
The poem Juggler by Richard Wilbur uses poetic devices such as alliteration, imagery, descriptive
language, and figurative language. Through these devices, the speaker s great respect and admiration
for the juggler described is revealed. The first stanza contains examples of figurative language and
imagery which reveal the speaker s respect for the juggler. Wilbur uses figurative language and
compares a ball to the earth, saying Falling is what it loves, and the earth falls/ so in our hearts from
brilliance,/ Settles and is forgot. (Line 3 5). The author also uses colorful, bright imagery to describe
the juggler, saying It takes a sky blue juggler with five red balls/ To shake our gravity up. (Lines 6 7).
The combination of this figurative language, along with the colorful, bright, and positive imagery used
to describe the juggler, reveal the speaker s admiration of the juggler. According to the speaker, the
earth becomes forgotten and falls, like a ball, from our hearts and attention. The juggler is able to
shake our gravity up and reinvoke excitement in wonder in the audience s hearts and minds through
juggling. The bright, colorful imagery paints the juggler in a positive light, revealing the speaker s

stemmed to two different forms causing bloodshed along the way. In fact, it can be said one of the
largest religious disputes during that the era was the Catholics versus the Protestants which were both
fleshed out from Christianity. Even if Catholics and Protestants were stemmed from Christianity, both
differs in some ways. During the Elizabethan era, Catholics find worth in reading the Bible since Latin

However, when Queen Mary I claimed the throne she converted back to Catholicism. She even earned
the name Bloody Mary for killings done, creating blood between religions for years. Even if this is the
case, a number of protestants still supported Mary s rise to the throne since she was perceived as the
legitimate heir to throne in spite of others intent for Lady Jane Grey. For the same reason that the
Protestants approved of Mary s notwithstanding their religious differences, Elizabeth also held the
backing of most Catholics. However, the cases are different. Comparatively, the reign of Mary was
short enough to deal the same issues of loyalty among radical Protestants that Elizabeth had to deal
with from a minority of Catholics, more specifically Jesuits. At the dawn of English Reformation,
there were various ways in professing religious beliefs between Protestants and Catholics. It is notable
that Protestants broke away from the Church of England into different faction in directions that Henry
VIII barely predicted. This way, the reign of Elizabeth marks the rise of Puritanism along with the
return of Marian exiles . Although there were persistent flaws in terms of rituals, people began to see
the Church of England as an entity that can still be shaped and furnished into a godlier community of
Christians .

37. Nevada Legal Case Study
Gaming has been a large part of Nevada s history, and has become an even larger part of our economy.
In the early years of state hood Nevada struggled with the question of whether or not gaming should
be legal. We see the first government involvement in the industry in 1864, before Nevada was even a
state. The territorial legislature of the time outlawed any game of chance. In order to enforce the ban
penalties were to be levied on anyone caught playing any game of chance. It is not until 1869, 5 years
later, that we see certain forms of gaming become decriminalized. From 1869 to 1911 these games of
chances remained legal, and the government played a minimal role in the regulation or control of the
industry. Once again, in 1911 a progressive movement succeeded in criminalizing gaming in Nevada
once again. Gaming would remain legal in Nevada up until the aftermath of the great depression in
1931. (Gamig history website)

This passage from the denouement Henrik Ibsen s play, Hedda Gabler, before Hedda s suicide, is an
illustration of the vulnerability and defeat of the impetuous and manipulative titular character. Ibsen
develops Hedda s character by uncovering details about the conflicts between Hedda and the other
characters, Judge Brack, Mrs Elvsted, and George Tesman which highlight Hedda s transformation
from an individualistic to despairing individual, conveying the theme of freedom and repression in
society. Ibsen uses the relationship and conflict between Hedda and Brack to illustrate Hedda s
struggle to assert her free will and power in a male dominated society. The two characters are united

Through this stage direction, Ibsen highlights the objectification of women. In many aspects, George
Tesman too does not see Hedda s full value as a person, and from the beginning of the play, Ibsen
makes this clear. Tesman adores rather than love his wife, proudly viewing her as an object of
adornment that makes several of his friends jealous. A scholar who is more devoted to his work than
his wife, Tesman spends more time with his books than his wife, even during their honeymoon. In this
passage, Ibsen further illustrates this objectification of women. Tesman turns his head away from her
because he believes there is nothing in the world (32) that Hedda can help Tesman with; Hedda is
merely an ornament and not of real use to Tesman. Ibsen s use of stage direction that depicts Tesman
turning his head after talking to Hedda both indicate Tesman s rejection of Hedda as a valuable person
and his obliviousness to Hedda and her desperate situation. Tesman s imperceptiveness is further
highlighted by Ibsen when Hedda imitates Tesman s intonation (16). Also, Hedda s mimicking of
Tesman, which is used earlier in the play as a sign of her contempt, is also used here in this passage by
Ibsen to portray Hedda s desperation. That Hedda would turn to Tesman, a person she dislikes and
views as beneath her, as a means of escape, is a clear indication of her despondency and madness,
which foreshadow her ultimate act of despair suicide. Yet Tesman thoughtlessly
