The Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon
2012 Black History Month 3C’s Essay Contest
             (Character, Contribution, and Community)

The Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon is sponsoring a Black History Month Essay
Contest designed to encourage students to learn more about the contributions African
Americans have made to our country. The focus of the contest is to encourage students
to learn not just about African American History, but also about American History.

Students from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade (Middle School Level) and 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th
grade (High School Level) who attend public or private schools within CT, MA, VT, NH, or
RI can enter this contest.

Character determines success. Throughout American history, African Americans
have exhibited courage, self-esteem, ingenuity, discipline, and integrity to become
successful entrepreneurs, politicians, scientists, artists, educators, and athletes.
Their accomplishments have inspired many people and advanced the American
community. For African Americans who lived in the 19th - and early 20th - Century
during the height of the struggle for racial equality, they found that, despite their
successes, they were more often judged by the color of their skin and not the
content of their character.

The Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon invites you to investigate the past
and discover notable 19th- and early 20th-Century African Americans who paved
the way for all Americans. In 700 words or less, write about an African American
who influenced government, science, medicine, education, entertainment, sports,
literature, business, or the arts. Tell us about their contributions to our country,
the positive character traits they possessed, why character is important for
success in reaching personal and professional goals, and why it’s important to
judge others by the content of their character. Moreover, tell us about someone in
your family, school, or community who reminds you of the African American
featured in your essay. Please tell us why.

Please see attached documents for contest details and requirements.

  • 1. The Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon 2012 Black History Month 3C’s Essay Contest (Character, Contribution, and Community) The Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon is sponsoring a Black History Month Essay Contest designed to encourage students to learn more about the contributions African Americans have made to our country. The focus of the contest is to encourage students to learn not just about African American History, but also about American History. Students from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade (Middle School Level) and 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade (High School Level) who attend public or private schools within CT, MA, VT, NH, or RI can enter this contest. Character determines success. Throughout American history, African Americans have exhibited courage, self-esteem, ingenuity, discipline, and integrity to become successful entrepreneurs, politicians, scientists, artists, educators, and athletes. Their accomplishments have inspired many people and advanced the American community. For African Americans who lived in the 19th - and early 20th - Century during the height of the struggle for racial equality, they found that, despite their successes, they were more often judged by the color of their skin and not the content of their character. The Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon invites you to investigate the past and discover notable 19th- and early 20th-Century African Americans who paved the way for all Americans. In 700 words or less, write about an African American who influenced government, science, medicine, education, entertainment, sports, literature, business, or the arts. Tell us about their contributions to our country, the positive character traits they possessed, why character is important for success in reaching personal and professional goals, and why it’s important to judge others by the content of their character. Moreover, tell us about someone in your family, school, or community who reminds you of the African American featured in your essay. Please tell us why. Please see attached documents for contest details and requirements.
