The internet – distraction or information goldmine? Both – but you have to be able to ignore the distractions to focus on the real business of science.
The Ivory Tower is a myth – you need to be connected to your peers, and that’s a worldwide network. Conferences don’t cut it for this communication any more.

Focus on title & DOI for searching – problem can be that news items about science often don’t reference the primary literature – can be worth using author names in conjunction with key words too (and even institutions)Check the articles themselves for added commentary
