Driving containerd operations with gRPC

Docker Compose is the last piece of the orchestration puzzle. After provisioning Docker daemons on any host in any location with Docker Machine and clustering them with Docker Swarm, users can employ Docker Compose to assemble multi-container distributed apps that run on top of these clusters. The first step to employing Docker Compose is to use a simple YAML file to declaratively define the desired state of the multi-container app: containers: web: build: . command: python app.py ports: - "5000:5000" volumes: - .:/code links: - redis environment: - PYTHONUNBUFFERED=1 redis: image: redis:latest command: redis-server --appendonly yes This example shows how Docker Compose takes advantage of existing containers. Specifically, in this simple two-container app declaration, the first container is a Python app built each time from the Dockerfile in the current directory. The second container is built from the redis Official Repo on the Docker Hub Registry. The links directive declares that the Python app container is dependent on the redis container. Not that it’s defined, starting your app is as easy as … % docker up With this single command, the Python container is automatically built from its Dockerfile and the redis container is pulled from the Docker Hub Registry. Then, thanks to the links directive expressing the dependency between the Python and redis containers, the redis container is started *first*, followed by the Python container. Docker Compose is still a work-in-progress and we want your help to design it. In particular, we want to know whether or not you think this should be a part of the Docker binary or a separate tool. Docker is awesome and there's been a lot of excitement over .NET Core running in Linux containers. But why do older apps have to miss out on the fun? With Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server containers, there's finally a way to dockerize .NET 4.6 apps using the same Docker tools and commands as we're used to on Linux. In this intermediate level talk, I'll give an overview of Docker and Windows Server containers. Then I'll demonstrate different ways to run existing ASP.NET Web API, MVC, and even WebForms applications inside Docker containers.

In particular, its build-once-run-anywhere model unlocks the world of cluster schedulers like Mesos and Kubernetes. These solve many of the problems of running high-scale websites, but introduce new challenges that need addressing. In this talk, Evan will describe PaaSTA, a PaaS built on top of open source tools including Docker, Mesos, Marathon, and Chronos. PaaSTA provides tooling for developers to quickly turn their microservice into a monitored, highly available application spanning multiple datacenters and cloud regions. Evan will give an overview of the open-source technologies that power PaaSTA, discuss how Yelp has glued these together to give developers control without burdening them with the complexities of the infrastructure, and show the workflow used by developers to update and maintain their services on PaaSTA.

Is DDD in itself difficult or is it just the way people used to present it which makes it hard to grasp and inaccessible? Through our various (more or less successful ;-) experiences, we will try to highlight what DDD is using a simple and more accessible approach. The opportunity for us is to show you how helpful it can be for your day-to-day projects. The goal of the microservices pattern language is to enable software developers to apply the microservice architecture effectively. It is a collection of patterns that solve architecture, design, development and operational problems. In this talk, I’ll provide an overview of the microservice architecture and describe the motivations for the pattern language. You will learn about the key patterns in the pattern language.

This is a presentation I gave at QCONSF 2017 The services in a microservice architecture must be loosely coupled and so cannot share database tables. What’s more, two phase commit (a.k.a. a distributed transaction) is not a viable option for modern applications. Consequently, a microservices application must use the Saga pattern, which maintains data consistency using a series of local transactions. In this presentation, you will learn how sagas work and how they differ from traditional transactions. We describe how to use sagas to develop business logic in a microservices application. You will learn effective techniques for orchestrating sagas and how to use messaging for reliability. We will describe the design of a saga framework for Java and show a sample application.

In this talk we share our experiences developing and deploying a microservices-based application. You will learn about the distributed data management challenges that arise in a microservices architecture. We will describe how we solved them using event sourcing to reliably publish events that drive eventually consistent workflows and pdate CQRS-based views. You will also learn how we build and deploy the application using a Jenkins-based deployment pipeline that creates Docker images that run on Amazon EC2. Let me handle that for you... Why you need a reverse proxy in your architecture. Containers are the runtime for distributed apps - that's old .NET monoliths being broken down into multiple components, as well as new .NET Core microservices projects. Your orchestrator can connect containers together without making any of them publicly accessible, so you can make your entire app private with just a single, secure entrypoint to your application. That's a reverse proxy, a piece of software which receives all external network traffic and fetches the response from a private container, before sending it back to the client. You can offload a lot of concerns to your reverse proxy and keep your application code clean - the proxy handles SSL, compression, load-balancing, routing and healthchecks. In this session you'll see the popular open-source reverse proxy Traefik in action. I'll use Traefik as the front-end to distributed .NET applications running in a Docker cluster, and show you to add the features of a reverse proxy without any changes to application code.

Imagine you could control that backbone independently of all the components, so your application code just makes simple calls to other services, and your communication backbone does all the complex non-functional work. Load balancing, traffic management, fault tolerance, end-to-end monitoring, dynamic routing and secure communication could all be applied and controlled centrally. That's a service mesh. In this session I'll cover the major features of a service mesh using Istio - which is the most popular technology in this space.
