4. Part One - Data
People do not agree on the
metaverse.
Isn’t the metaverse just a
bunch of cartoon
characters?
Isn’t the metaverse just
another big company
scheme to make money
and steal our personal
information?
Is the metaverse really a
thing? Should we even take
it seriously?
Does it matter,
economically?
Does it matter, socially?
Does it matter,
academically?
Do I have a say in what the
metaverse is and what it is
for?
What is the government
doing about it and do we
even want to know?
Is OpenSimulator a
metaverse?
Is Zoom a metaverse?
Is a Door a metaverse?
What are the minimum
requirements to qualify as a
metaverse?

Example: “We Are Already Living in the Metaverse”
This slide shows two definitions of the metaverse:
The metaverse is reality in the digital age.
The metaverse is a persistent, online, digital environment, with 2-way, multi-user,
co-creative, instant access.
The first definition is a bit grandiose and the second a bit idealistic, although more
specific. Do these remind you of anything?
9. Operational Definitions Change
Concepts Into Measurements
"An operational definition is a
procedure agreed upon for
translation of a concept into
measurement of some kind."
There is no true value of any
characteristic, state, or condition
that is defined in terms of
measurement or observation.
Change of procedure for
measurement (change of
operational definition) or
observation produces a new
number."
W. Edwards Deming, The New
Economics for Industry,
Government, and Education, 1994

Measurement—ascertained by

Operational Definitions Change Concepts Into Measurements
The last slide said,
“The metaverse is a persistent, online, digital environment, with 2-way, multi-user,
co-creative, instant access.”
This is an example of an Operational Definition.
An Operational Definition Changes a Concept Into a Measurement
The business consultant and statistician, W Edwards Deming,
helped the Japanese automobile industry become world-class in the 1950’s.
Deming changed grandiose concepts of “quality” into specific measures.
Deming stated that no concept is usable, in practice, until it has been translated into a
measurement procedure that can be observed and reported.
This means that you can ask yes / no questions about the concept, supported by
numbers.
For example, regarding the definition of metaverse that it has “instant access”...
10. . Traditional Email would be OUT as a metaverse.
. Instant Messaging would be IN.
Deming emphasized that if you change the yes / no questions that are being asked,
then you are changing the operational definition.
In particular, there can be more than one valid definition.
11. Example: Chair Has More Than
One Valid Definition
“chair”
1. A seat for one person having
four legs and a backrest.
2. Something that supports like a
chair.
“Lady Chair” image courtesy R Alekseev
“Bean Bag Chair” image courtesy Wayfair
definition courtesy Dictionary.com
“I know a chair when I see it.”

01
Example: Chair Has More Than One Valid Definition
According to Dictionary.com, “A chair is a seat for one person with four legs and a
backrest.”
The picture on the left shows a “Lady Chair” with 4 legs but with the front two legs
crossed.
This meets the definition but does not look comfortable to sit on.
The picture on the right shows a “Bean Bag Chair” with no legs at all.
But you can sit on it and it looks more comfortable. It also looks harder to move.
Dictionary.com also says, “A chair is something that supports (like a chair).”
So there are multiple Operational Definitions for “Chair” distinguished by yes / no
questions such as:
. Four Legs? Yes / No
. Backrest? Yes / No
. Support? Yes / No
. Comfortable? Yes / No
. Easy to Move? Yes / No
12. I give Lady Chair 4 out of 5.
I give Bean Bag Chair 3 out of 5.
Both are different yet both are (operationally) “chairworthy.” *humor*
The operational definitions change based on the yes / no questions that are most
important to your use case.
Deming gives us good news and a warning:
It is NOT an issue if there is more than one operational definition.
It IS an issue if you and others you are meeting with are using different definitions and
do not know it.
13. Example: Metaverse Has More
Than One Valid Definition
“metaverse”
1. A shared, realistic, and
immersive computer
simulation.
2. A theoretical or emergent
networked online space.

14. Test Number One: An avatar is
something you can see outside
yourself that represents you.
Can you see your own avatar?
Test Number Two: A free
camera allows a movable
perspective of the virtual
environment in which your
avatar is immersed. Can you
see behind other avatars and all
around them?
Test Number Three: Can you
change your avatar,
environment, and content?
Test Number Four: Can you
visit whole other regions made
by others?
Example: “Seven Tests to
Distinguish Metaverse Apps”
Test Number Five: Does the
platform allow users to
exchange in-world currency
and real-world currencies
interchangeably? Can
developers make real-world
money by participating in a
virtual environment economy?
Test Number Six: Does the
platform combine digital and
physical environments
simultaneously?
Test Number Seven: Does your
use case require bolt-on
hardware and software to make
the platform work?

Is the platform...
Instantaneous (online),
synchronous (two-way), and
many-to-many (multi-user)
interactive?
Collaborative and
build-and-create capable?
Turn-the-crank ready (stable
and expandable to many more
users)?
Does the platform…
Allow users to communicate
flexibly, including private as well
as public, text as well as voice?
Play well with other
technologies and devices ?
Is the platform…
Accessible in terms of costs,
equipment, and bandwidth?
Secure in terms of your user
identity and your intellectual
property?

OpenSimulator is an Example of a Canonical Metaverse
OpenSimulator and Second Life is the Ur-Example of a Canonical Metaverse.
It is Canonical because there is a book about it, “Snow Crash”, written in 1992.
Think about your own experiences in OpenSimulator and in Real Life, as we read
what Neal Stephenson said back then…

19. Zoom is an Example of an
Extended Metaverse
“The definition of metaverse,
now, is sort of a future-forward
social hub, a space where
avatars can meet, an
ecosystem for connected
apps. A VR- and AR-ready
dream of bringing people into
some sort of virtual universe
that's as creation-friendly as a
Minecraft, as popular as a
Fortnite, and as useful as Zoom,
Slack and Google Docs.
The future of tech doesn't lie just
in VR or AR, but in a mix of many
devices accessing a shared
online world, which may be more
immersive and 3D than the
internet you're currently using to
read this story.”

Zoom is an Example of an Extended Metaverse
“What is the Metaverse” became a hot topic in public awareness and media because
of
A) The Pandemic in 2019 forcing people to communicate using “2-way” “instant
access” apps like Zoom, and
B) Facebook in 2021 renaming itself to “Meta”
In response to the new “buzz”, Scott Stein, a senior technical editor at CNET,
published a contemporary definition of metaverse in 2021.
Think about the apps and platforms you use or see used, every day, as we read his
definition.
*begin quote*
“The definition of metaverse, now, is sort of a future-forward social hub, a space
where avatars can meet, an ecosystem for connected apps.
20. “A VR- and AR-ready dream of bringing people into some sort of virtual universe that's
as creation-friendly as a Minecraft, as popular as a Fortnite, and as useful as Zoom,
Slack and Google Docs.
“The future of tech doesn't lie just in VR or AR, but in a mix of many devices
accessing a shared online world, which may be more immersive and 3D than the
internet you're currently using to read this story.”
*end quote*
Notice the operational elements:
. Connected Apps? Yes / No
. Space Where Avatars Can Meet? Yes / No
. VR and AR Ready? Yes / No
. Creation Friendly? Yes / No
. Popular? Yes / No
. Useful? Yes / No
. More Immersive and 3D? Yes / No
. I give OpenSimulator 5 out of 7.
. I give Zoom 5 out of 7 as well.
21. Theorists Try to Cover the Bases
Stylianos Mystakidis, MDPI,
2022
“The Metaverse is the post-reality
universe, a perpetual and persistent
multiuser environment merging
physical reality with digital virtuality. It
is based on the convergence of
technologies that enable multisensory
interactions with virtual environments,
digital objects and people such as
virtual reality (VR) and augmented
reality (AR). Hence, the Metaverse is
an interconnected web of social,
networked immersive environments in
persistent multiuser platforms. It
enables seamless embodied user
communication in real-time and
dynamic interactions with digital
artifacts. Its first iteration was a web
of virtual worlds where avatars were
able to teleport among them. The
contemporary iteration of the
Metaverse features social, immersive
VR platforms compatible with
massive multiplayer online video
games, open game worlds and AR
collaborative spaces.”

When Was the Metaverse Invented?
The metaverse arrived without us noticing it.
We don’t realize it now, until we look back:
“Snow Crash” came out in 1992, thirty years ago.
But that is also when The Internet became a thing.
Ten years later, Second Life came out in 2003.
But that is also when The Internet of Things became a thing.
Another ten years later, Zoom came out in 2012.
But that is also when The Oculus Headset became a thing.
And another ten years later, Facebook renamed itself as Meta.
Which brings us back to today.
25. Recap
As a concept, the metaverse
exists in minds and imaginations.
As practice, the metaverse exists
in the multiple,
physically-realized design
specifications with which we
create, communicate, and
collaborate.
These design specifications are
called Operational Definitions.
Sometimes our use cases
exclude particular metaverse
apps from being used in favor of
others.
And sometimes metaverse apps
become so attractive we find
new use case needs we never
had before.
An operational definition
translates concepts into
measurement procedures. There
can be be more than one.
The metaverse is an immersive,
digitally embodied, 3D,
computer-generated universe.
The metaverse is an evolving
ecosystem of digitally and
physically connected apps.
The metaverse is physical reality
in the digital age.
The metaverse is a persistent,
online, digital environment, with
2-way, multi-user, co-creative,
instant access.
The metaverse is a bizarre new
extension of physical mind into
physical body and space.
