The Importance Of College Level Writing
An area of confusion in the college world is what defines college–level writing. There are many
possible answers to this question. Students may be confused about this issue because they want to
know what is expected of them in their composition classes and the writing that they have to do in
their other classes. All of us want to succeed when we get to college and writing makes up a big part
of the college learning experience since we have to write in every class we have. Excelling in
writing, and especially in writing at the college level, will help students succeed in college because
of all of the writing involved in all of their classes. Before we write our papers however, we need to
learn how to write at the college level and before that what college–level writing is. College–level
writing is something that requires more attention to content and quality than high school level
writing, something that has varying expectations between colleges and professors, and something
that requires the writer to actively participate in their writing to become better.
Some students may believe that the work that they did in high school will be similar to the work
that they do in college, but, "there is no guarantee that students who do well in high school
composition will automatically do well in college composition" (Davies 31). A student that does
excel in their high school writing classes may think that they know how to write at the college level

Writing Process In College Level Writing
Every year, students are required to become more proficient in areas such as math, science, history,
and writing. High school English teachers push students to become better writers so they can be
ready when they get to college. College–level writing is being able to use advanced vocabulary,
developed grammar and rhetorical devices to express ideas accurately and precisely. College–level
writing expects the writer to be able to use higher level vocabulary to express their ideas
accurately and precisely. The first time I was asked to use higher level vocabulary was in sixth
grade, when I tried to use words such as better, bad, sad, etc. Using advanced words, such as
miserable and cruel in place of the common words sad and bad, enhanced my writing and turned
my essays from ordinary to exceptional. When the writer use advance vocabulary, the reader is
more engaged with the writing and can understand it better. For example, the sentence "The dog
walked happily to his owner", would sound stronger if the writer used the word joyfully instead. It
sounds stronger because happily is a commonly used word, so it has lost the appeal that would make
people interested. Using stronger words makes the reader intrigued and wanting to read the essay.
Enhanced vocabulary also improves a person's essays because it makes the writer feel more
confident about her/his writing.

Essay About My English Class
I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was
already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even
more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I
finally decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of
English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be

I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your
own opinion as long as you back it up. He showed me that I am an author when I did not think I
was. He also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this
technique before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I
was scared, because I felt like I had to get a good grade. I started thinking about what tools I could
use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went
there they would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I
used multiple choppy sentences and commas in spots there should not be. Sometimes I would even

The College Level Writing Course
At the beginning of the class this year, I didn't expect o to well right off the bat of the college
level writing course because I had always struggled with English in middle school through high
school. To my surprise though, I have learned many things this semester and have already used
some of these skills in other papers in other classes I had. Thanks to the help of Sue Oakes, I can
now say proudly that I can actually write a decent paper and feel rather confident about it. Starting
off the year in the English class, I had already messed up the first task. I had forgotten to the to
sample writing so that she could see how our witting skills were and would try to see what type of
work she will have to put into us to make us capable to write a college ready paper. So to start the
semester off I had already one late assignment and thought to myself "great she thinks I will be a
slacker because I already didn't turn in something". Going more I n depth into the first unit, we
had to write a story about ourselves but it had to be a family myth. At the time I was very perplexed
because I had never heard of a family myth before so I had no idea what to write about; so I ended
up writing about those dang cigars. The step by step process really helped me out in writing

conclusion. A conclusion is not considered a distinct paragraph, but is a summary of the main points
made in the article. The conclusion should recap the arguments of the author.
Effective writing requires that articles must be correctly formatted without typos and grammatical
errors. This means an effective writer must proof read the writing once it's done. Proofreading is
very important in writing. Although some people have resorted to using spell–checkers, the best

computer programs might assume to be correct when in fact they are not. Thus in order to

College–level Writing can be time– consuming, stressful and difficult, but it is worth the effort.
Many students "characterize writing as a utilitarian chore or school requirement" and don't see "the
implications of writing as a career skill" (Coyle 199). As a result, many employers have complaints
about the mediocre writing skills of new employees (Coyle 196, Bharathi 7). "Writing ability is
often vital for effective work performance" (Coyle 195) . Due to this, most careers require their

Student At Depaul University For Three Years Now
Reflective Essay I have been a student at DePaul University for three years now. Over the course
of my stay I have grown and learned how to write essays as Biology major. This class pointed out
to me the things that science majors tend to neglect when they write their essays and lab reports;
for example, punctuation, and citation. This is something I've gotten better at, but still
improving. Most importantly, I've learned how to analyze a text. The scientific essays I am used
to reading, rarely do I have to read between the lines. It was hard but quite interesting to go read an

Back in my high school years, writing was my worst nightmare. Even in Portuguese, my native
language, it was very stressful when I had a writing assignment. As I saw myself as a logical person

While registering for a college–level course, last year, I questioned how difficult the class would be.
I had taken a course the previous semester that had covered the basics in business and economy, yet
this would be the first course in English–a topic that I had been told, on many occasions, that I
excelled in. Because of this, I came into this year's English class confident and sure that I would

There were a few words that could have been written differently. This definitely didn't take away
the quality of your essay, in my opinion, but sometimes, something as simple as going over the
paper a few times to make sure our words have a space between them could improve the reader's
experience by a great amount. To give you a few examples: "Had helped", "actually speaking",
"thinking is", and "exactly informative" are all written together in the paper. Additionally, A few
word choices could be improved and some words reduced or replaced. Some suggestions on this
topic: Your second sentence where it says "communication" could be easily changed to

should be written. Various authors, even have their own aspect of what college–level writing is and
what a writer should include when writing so, it can be considered college–level. Scholars like

Before entering English 1301, I had my doubts about what this class was going to consist of.
Considering this is a college level English class, and a subject I struggled in, my worries were not at
ease. Throughout the year, my understanding and comprehension of the writing process, as well as

errors and shows improvement on these writing conventions. Improvement can be seen in the
sentence, " Euthanasia should not be legal because it is not morally correct, undermines medical

The College Level Writing Process
When it comes to college level writing and how many sentences should be in a paragraph, I
personally keep mine to about 5 to 7 sentences per paragraph. As a writer, the goal is to get the
point across as clearly as possible. What has been most beneficial to most writers is by cutting down
on extra or unneeded words; also another technique used is grammar techniques and correct
vocabulary usage.

This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the
semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up
to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually
demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college
has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a

I definitely learned a great deal from our discussions about this book. I really did not like it at all
until the class sat down and analyzed the many levels Conrad addressed in his story. I thought the
endless paradoxes in the book, once brought to light, were actually very interesting. My favorite
section, however, was the poetry unit. I really enjoyed the poem ?The Blues? by Billy Collins the
most because of my respect for music. I think Collins really makes a point in his poem about just
how important music is and how it allows people who are very different to connect on many
levels. I also loved ?Love Calls Us to the Things of This World? by Richard Wilbur. The imagery
in this poem was absolutely amazing, and I adored how he made the ordinary things seem mystical
with his words. I loved how the laundry became angels. If only we could look at the world from
that point of view more often, it would be a much happier place.
The criticisms in college have even been somewhat enjoyable and interesting to read. I think I
began to like the stories and poems we read in class more and more as we discussed them and
looked at different authorities? opinions. I found a lot of the information in the databases very
useful. For the Antigone research project, the JSTORS database gave me hundreds of articles
dealing with my topic. I could narrow down what I was looking for and find numerous

Students may be confused about this issue because they want to know what is expected of them in their composition classes and the writing that they have to do in their other classes. High school English teachers push students to become better writers so they can be ready when they get to college. I was already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even more nervous. The College Level Writing Course At the beginning of the class this year, I didn't expect o to well right off the bat of the college level writing course because I had always struggled with English in middle school through high school.   • 7. Student At Depaul University For Three Years Now Reflective Essay I have been a student at DePaul University for three years now. Over the course of my stay I have grown and learned how to write essays as Biology major. I had taken a course the previous semester that had covered the basics in business and economy, yet this would be the first course in English–a topic that I had been told, on many occasions, that I excelled in.
