What does it mean to be a
       mentor?

      By Simon Hone
What is mentoring?
• Mentoring is the encouragement and support
sometimes needed by an individual or a team
in order for them to achieve goals they have
set themselves, maximise their potential and
  improve their skills.
• Mentors can step you through a tough or
difficult situation or help you grasp a better
  understanding of a concept.
• Come in all different shapes and sizes.
History of Mentoring
• Mentoring has be around for
• a long time and will continue
to be present for a very long
  time.
• Important in a lot of areas including
  nursing, teaching and business
  management.
• Was around when caveman were foraging
and information was passed down through
generations about food and shelter- a
  constant mentoring process.
Why is mentoring important?
• Gives a different perspective about a situation
that has occurred. Gives the mentee
confidence that they can achieve a set goal.
• Gives stability to people, having someone who
you can talk to about things going on, not only
in your sport but your life is important.
What makes a good mentor?
• Be respectful and Assertive
• Calm and clear Communicator
• Truthful
• Working for goals of the mentee and not
  yourself
• Reliable
Role of the Mentee
• You are yourself.
• Don’t view having a mentor as a get out of jail
free card and blame everything on them.
• Set yourself goals- your mentor will have some
idea about possible goals but you are the best
  person to set them.
LeBron James
• LeBron James is arguably the best player playing today
  and best of all time.
• Some considered he had not made it until he won his
  first NBA championship last season.
• Turned to Hakeem Olajuwon
  to mentor him and improve
  aspects of
  his game.

• This movie shows how LeBron needed that mentoring
  to gain strength.
Dirk Nowitzki
• Dirk was very young when he acquired his
  mentor- Holger Geschwindner .
• He pushed Dirk to higher levels for 16 years
culminating in Dirk’s team, the Dallas Mavericks,
winning a championship in the 2010-2011
  season.

  A
• Another really good movie showcasing how dirk
made it to where he is today.
Would I like to be a mentor?
• Yes I think being a mentor would be a great
task, I'm not sure if people look at me like a
  mentor already.
• In conclusion mentoring is very important as
long as it is undertaken in a correct manor.
