Kick stress, do yoga!

Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. Good afternoon. Everyone please stand up and join me for this short exercise. Please mimic the pose that I am doing right now (Yoga pose 1). Great! Now, please mimic this second pose. (Yoga pose 2). Okay, now before you sit back down, how did you all feel when I asked you to do these poses? (Wait for answers). Most people feel awkward when they start doing yoga. However, yoga is not something that should make you feel uncomfortable, as I will talk to you about today. Thank you for your participation in the activity. You can sit back down now. You probably have heard some many myths about yoga. However, I am here this afternoon to speak with you about yoga, the truth behind some common misconceptions, and how yoga can benefit you. I understand that as college students, you are busy, and probably broke; but I encourage you all to listen to me today as I speak with you about the various options you have. Yoga can benefit you all; no matter your age, your body type, or your flexibility. People have been practicing yoga for over 5,000 years. I began practicing yoga to combine with my dance training. Within the first few months, I started seeing lasting improvements on both my mental and physical health. However, dancers aren’t the only people who do yoga. Did you know that LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, and the Philadelphia Eagles have reported that they practice yoga? As I said earlier, yoga is for you all; even you males out there.
  2. Stress occurs in all of our lives. It is important to know the methods to manage your stress. By practicing yoga on a daily basis, we’re able to manage the negative effects of stress: muscle strain, depressed mood, and digestion problems. Today I will speak with you about stress, the negative effects it has on our body, and cheap ways to practice yoga to manage your stress.
  3. As students, you all experience stress on a day to day basis. Yourlarge amount of stress as students is a problem. If you don’t figure out ways to manage stress now, it’s only going to get worse as yougo into the work force. It’s been reported in current research that as students, you encounter different problems and situations than your friends who aren’t students. The pressure to get good grades and graduate with your master’s degree, can take a toll on your bodies. To make matters even worse, we all know that class work doesn’t end on campus. You bring your work home with you. So, when you mix the stress from school, along with your stressors from your home and personal lives, the combination can harmfully affect your physical and mental health.
  4. The three effects of stress that I want to address today are muscle strain, depressed mood, and digestion problems. Practicing yoga can decrease the amount of all of these negative effects of stress. For example, was there ever a time when you had an important paper to finish? Did the stress of finishing the paper make you agitated or depressed? Was the paper all you could think about? Did you take time to just sit and relax and think about nothing? If you did, then you were already practicing yoga. You were using meditation- a yoga practice, to ease your stress. If you all want to live happier and healthier lives, it is important that you learn now how to manage our stress. As I’ve said previously, stress negatively effects every aspect of your body- from physically to mentally.
  5. Stress hinders our ability to work up to our fullest potential. When we are stressed out, our bodies are telling us that something is wrong. It’s very important to understand that although some of us think that we can get more things accomplished when we are stressed, we actually can’t. Dr. Oz, the surgeon, author, and TV host, recently reported that the best thing to do when you are stressed is to either get moving, or meditate. Do you know what you get when you combine exercise with meditation? You get yoga.
  6. We all have stress. The difference is how much you let stress affect your daily lives. One in five college students report that they feel stressed all or most of the time. That means that out of 100 students, 20 of them are stressed most of the time. Many of you are probably stressed right now. Being knowledgeable about options to lessen and manage that stress is key to a healthy lifestyle.
  7. Practicing yoga daily is the best thing that you can do for stress. Yoga lowers many of the negative effects of stress: muscle strain, depressed mood, and digestion problems. Although you may believe some of the misconceptions about yoga, I want to inform you of the truth behind some of the common myths, before I start talking more in depth about yoga. First, yoga is not a religion. It has no creed or external god. People who practice yoga don’t need to be religious in any way.
  8. Second, yoga is not just for flexiblepeople. Yoga can be practiced by all of us. Yoga classes are nonjudgmental, and offer simplified modifications for poses that you may not be able to do. Everyone can do yoga.
  9. Lastly, yoga is not just easy and gentle. Yes, meditation and some forms of yoga can be slow and gentle, but there is a great deal of strength needed for yoga. No matter what you believe about yoga, please remember that each of you can do it. There are always options for modifying poses to fit your athletic level. Don’t get discouraged if you can’t do certain poses!
  10. The three effects of stress that yoga can help decrease are muscle strain, depressed mood, and digestion problems. The first, muscle strain, can be very painful. Have any of you went for a run and forgot to stretch afterwards? You were probably very sore the next day. Yoga poses release lactic acid. Lactic acid is a substance that builds up in your muscles that cause them to be stiff. Yoga stretches not only your muscles, but also the soft tissues of your body; such as ligaments, and tendons. Yoga also helps with strength and better posture, which affects muscle strain. For example, many poses, such as the Downward Dog and Plank pose, build upper body strength

  12. Yoga can also help reduce depression. As students you might tend to stress out for various reasons. Yoga has been shown to increase mood, because it boosts oxygen to your brain.
  13. Lastly, yoga can positively affect digestive problems. I am sure that when you all get stressed, you might not tend to eat the healthiest way possible. I know that when I get stressed out I grab the quickest thing, which usually has a lot of sugar. What about you? What do you all grab to eat when you are stressed? Yoga can help regulate your digestion system, and increase your anti-oxidants to keep your body healthy.
  14. I understand that as college students we don’t necessarily have a lot of extra money. However, there are ways to implement yoga into your lives for a cheap price.YogaToday.com offers a free membership. With the free membership, you get to download onto your computer the free weekly yoga class. Also, we offer 1 hour classes to download for $4 each, and unlimited downloads for $10 a month. You don’t even have to leave your home. So, when you don’t have time to commute to your local gym, you can do yoga at home in between working on your homework. It eliminates excuses!
  15. Being a graduate student is extremely stressful. Your lives don’t just stop because you are in grad school. You continuously have to deal with the stressors from your personal and home lives as well. You can make the change today by trying yoga. The least you can do is give it a chance. Please visit YogaToday.com for more information about yoga, its benefits, and free online downloadable classes. I hope that you make a step on the path to the right direction by finally taking a hold of the stress that is ruining your physical and mental health.
