About Amphora
             • Started in ELNs in 1996
              • Globally deployed, fully electronic ELN
                       for Kodak
                 • Grew from there...
             • Now work with large & small companies
              • Biotechs, Pharma, Chemicals

What we do

             • Patent Evidence Creation & Preservation
              • Make lawyers happy
              • Which means you can make scientists
                       happy

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 6
What we do

             • Sometimes our stuff is used...
              • Standalone
              • In conjunction with other “ELN”
                       products
                 • With in house systems

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 7
Why me?

             • We do the Patent Evidence problem
             • You still need to make the scientists happy
              • So we get a ring-side seat on some of
                       these problems
                 • We cross all the different ELN industries

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 8
Audience Survey
             • Do you have a Med. Chem ELN project (in
                   progress or complete?)
             • Do you have other kinds of scientists?
             • Are you deploying into
              • A regulated environment
              • A discovery environment
http://www.amphora-research.com/ 9
The Typical ELN
                               journey
                            (In two Acts)

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 10
Act I
             • Chemists are the most vocal, and can
                   demonstrate some kind ROI
             • And you can buy one! From multiple
                   vendors!
             • Let’s do that then... I’m sure once we’ve done
that we can re-use it for our other scientists
                 • Because they all use notebooks, right?
http://www.amphora-research.com/ 11
Meanwhile...

Everyone else is getting on with business

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 12
Act II
             • Happy chemists
             • Generally, band-aided the Patent problem
             • Now, we’ve got an ELN
              • The rest of them want one too
              • So given we’ve already got one
              • Easy decision?
http://www.amphora-research.com/ 13
Typical Reactions

             • “We don’t work like that”
             • “I doesn’t work with our applications”
             • “Why should we bother”
             • “Very Expensive”
             • “You’ve made Excel harder to use”
http://www.amphora-research.com/ 14
What’s going on?

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 15
Why an ELN?

             • Because the existing solution sucks
              • Cut & Stick computer printouts
              • Can’t search (like Google)

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 16
Why an ELN?
             • “Easily use computer applications in the
                   course of our work”
             • “Search our work”
             • “See other people’s work”
             • “If our discipline does special stuff, deal
                   with that”

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 17
The “special stuff”
             • Organic Chemistry has a clear, widely-used
                   notation which rewards specific support
                 • There’s a Cheminformatics industry!
             • Other disciplines do too
              • But they’re much more specialised
              • Can often be represented as text of
                       graphics

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 18
What they didn’t say

             • “Replace the applications I use day-to-day”
              • In fact, they want an ELN to make using
                       those easier!
             • “Make my life more complex”
             • “Give me stuff I don’t need”

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 19
The result

             • Chemistry-centric ELNs don’t tend to be
                   well received outside of Chemistry
             • Frustrating for involved

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 20
Note

             • Science is very broad
             • I am generalising
             • Your mileage may vary
             • I’m just trying to help people think

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 21
Science is huge

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 22
Different Styles

             • Chemistry tends to be pretty structured
                   and routine
             • Other disciplines have much greater
                   variation in the work

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 23
Tools
             • Chemistry tends to focus on the
                   structures, reactions, properties, drawing &
                   animating them etc.
             • Other disciplines have a much wider set of
                   tools
                 • And use Excel as a “Swiss Army Knife”
             • Scientists are knowledge workers too
http://www.amphora-research.com/ 24
Less is more

From http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/2006/week30/index.html
Part of the problem is
                     the term
                      “ELN”

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 26
Questions
             • If the paper notebook didn’t exist would
we coin the term “Electronic” notebook?
             • If it wasn’t for the term “ELN” would we
                   look for one system?
             • Why are all the “ELN” vendors (outside of
                   chemistry) so different?
             • Where are the non-chemistry ELNs?
http://www.amphora-research.com/ 27
Where do they work?
• Excel • Blogging tools (e.g.
                              Wordpress)
• Word
                          • In-house experiment
• Filemaker planning tools

• InfoPath/SharePoint • Lotus Notes

• ISIS/Draw • OneNote

• Wikis • LIMS

                          • ERP
What are they doing?

             • Experiments - just like everyone else
             • Just because they aren’t working in a
product with “ELN” stamped on it, doesn’t
                   mean it isn’t proper science

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 29
As a rule, it is much
                   better if you pay
                   attention to each
                 discipline individually

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 30
The “One System”
                       death magnet

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 31
One System

             • “You all use the same Paper notebook don’t
                   you?”
             • “So surely you can all use the same
                   Electronic notebook?”

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 32
One solution?
       User quote:

         Anyone who claims one
         solution solves all problems...
                                          ...is a salesman

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 33
Do you need one solution?

             • Not unless you buy something crazily
                   proprietary
                 • In which case you probably don’t want it
                       anyway
             • Integration is a fact of life

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 34
Can you buy One Solution?
             • Yes, if you only do one kind of science
             • Yes, if you are prepared to do an awful lot
                   of customisation
             • Yes, if architecture is more important than
                   users
             • Yes if you will never change what you do
http://www.amphora-research.com/ 35
General Purpose ELNs
             • You can do it for small numbers of users
                   and certain styles of work
             • Where workflow is important
             • For large numbers of users
              • The diversity in process will kill you
              • You end up building an expensive version
                       of Word & Excel

Some Suggestions

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 38
Project Structure
             • Divide your problem into
              • Corporate aspects
              • Different disciples
             • Solve the corporate stuff centrally
             • Let the different user groups do what they
                   need to do
             • Encourage/enforce collaboration

   Pharmacology
                      (Records, IP protection, Sharing)
                                                          Corporate aspects

       Etc.
                                                                              A framework
Patent Evidence
             • Typically this is a broad, thin layer
             • Consistently applied across the whole
                   company
             • Keep it out of the scientific systems
              • Single, well defined place
              • Under the control of Custodian
http://www.amphora-research.com/ 41
Records Management

             • The Cinderella of ELN projects
             • Desperately important
             • Clearly something that’s dependent on your
                   own processes

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 42
The “Deep” systems
             • If they use structures, they’ll probably want
                   one of the Chemistry-centric ELNs
             • If they aren’t look at what they have already
              • You might be able to leave them alone
              • Just give them something to keep the
                       lawyers happy
                 • This will hopefully be low-impact
http://www.amphora-research.com/ 43
“Deep Systems”

             • More than one group might find the same
                   system acceptable - great!
             • You might want tools from Rescentris,
IDBS, Klee etc. to support specific aspects
                   of their work

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 44
“Deep Systems”
             • If you do a good job
              • Everyone gets their ideal work
                       environment
                 • You disrupt them as little as possible
                 • You’ve left the door open for future
                       improvements

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 45
Sources of solutions

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 46
Chemistry

             • Chemistry is pretty structured
             • Buy (or build) them a Chemistry-centric
ELN and let them get on with it
             • The selection process is detailed but at
                   least the work relatively consistently

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 47
Sources of Chemistry ELNs
             • If you’re a big pharma, you’re probably
                   already set
                 • With varying success - this isn’t easy
             • Solutions
              • Buy off the shelf
              • Build from what you have
              • Vendor capture
http://www.amphora-research.com/ 48
Sources of Chemistry
             • In Biotechs, you probably can’t afford to
                   build or do vendor capture
             • Unless Cheminformatics is a core strength
             • So you’re going to have do as much as you
                   can with off-the-shelf (customised as
                   needed)
             • Nice selection of vendors, have fun!
http://www.amphora-research.com/ 49
Biology

             • Massive diversity
             • Lots of Microsoft Office and other “non
                   ELN” applications
             • Best approach is to get out of their way

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 50
Example

             • Biology in Janssen (J&J) (IQPC Brussels
                   2007)
                 • Really good example of in-depth analysis
                       of process
                 • 98% approval rate on a project that size
                       is pretty stunning

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 51
Some questions you
                     might ask...

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 52
What about GxP

             • The needs of GxP & 21CFR11 mandate
record keeping at the activity level
             • You can’t do this Broad Vs Deep model
             • I’m not sure there’s such a thing as a
                   Generic ELN for regulated areas

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 53
What about Raw Data?
             • ELN isn’t the place for raw data
              • From a records aspect
              • From a practical aspect
             • ELN can provide metadata
             • But store it somewhere else (filesystems
                   are nice!)

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 54
Patent Reform

             • The US will never move away from a need
to prove invention (that pesky constitution)
             • Paradoxically, the current versions of Patent
Reform will lead other Patent jurisdictions
                   to require Notebooks too!

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 55
Isn’t this expensive?

            • Not if you’ve already got perfectly
                 acceptable solutions already
            • The ROI on software you don’t have to buy
                 is outstanding!

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 56
Are you on Drugs?

             • A large number of end-user companies
                   have similar approaches
             • Most of the case studies are “Deep”
                   systems
             • Ultimately, this is a much-simplified version
                   of the CENSA architecture

http://www.amphora-research.com/ 57
Benefits of taking a

2008 04 01 ELNs, Chemistry, Biology

  • 1. Chemistry Vs Biology Simon Coles CTO & Co-Founder, Amphora Research Systems
  • 2. Copies of these slides http://www.amphora-research.com/ 2
  • 3. About Amphora • Started in ELNs in 1996 • Globally deployed, fully electronic ELN for Kodak • Grew from there... • Now work with large & small companies • Biotechs, Pharma, Chemicals http://www.amphora-research.com/ 3
  • 4. Some of our Customers 4
  • 6. What we do • Patent Evidence Creation & Preservation • Make lawyers happy • Which means you can make scientists happy http://www.amphora-research.com/ 6
  • 7. What we do • Sometimes our stuff is used... • Standalone • In conjunction with other “ELN” products • With in house systems http://www.amphora-research.com/ 7
  • 8. Why me? • We do the Patent Evidence problem • You still need to make the scientists happy • So we get a ring-side seat on some of these problems • We cross all the different ELN industries http://www.amphora-research.com/ 8
  • 9. Audience Survey • Do you have a Med. Chem ELN project (in progress or complete?) • Do you have other kinds of scientists? • Are you deploying into • A regulated environment • A discovery environment http://www.amphora-research.com/ 9
  • 10. The Typical ELN journey (In two Acts) http://www.amphora-research.com/ 10
  • 11. Act I • Chemists are the most vocal, and can demonstrate some kind ROI • And you can buy one! From multiple vendors! • Let’s do that then... I’m sure once we’ve done that we can re-use it for our other scientists • Because they all use notebooks, right? http://www.amphora-research.com/ 11
  • 12. Meanwhile... Everyone else is getting on with business http://www.amphora-research.com/ 12
  • 13. Act II • Happy chemists • Generally, band-aided the Patent problem • Now, we’ve got an ELN • The rest of them want one too • So given we’ve already got one • Easy decision? http://www.amphora-research.com/ 13
  • 14. Typical Reactions • “We don’t work like that” • “I doesn’t work with our applications” • “Why should we bother” • “Very Expensive” • “You’ve made Excel harder to use” http://www.amphora-research.com/ 14
  • 16. Why an ELN? • Because the existing solution sucks • Cut & Stick computer printouts • Can’t search (like Google) http://www.amphora-research.com/ 16
  • 17. Why an ELN? • “Easily use computer applications in the course of our work” • “Search our work” • “See other people’s work” • “If our discipline does special stuff, deal with that” http://www.amphora-research.com/ 17
  • 18. The “special stuff” • Organic Chemistry has a clear, widely-used notation which rewards specific support • There’s a Cheminformatics industry! • Other disciplines do too • But they’re much more specialised • Can often be represented as text of graphics http://www.amphora-research.com/ 18
  • 19. What they didn’t say • “Replace the applications I use day-to-day” • In fact, they want an ELN to make using those easier! • “Make my life more complex” • “Give me stuff I don’t need” http://www.amphora-research.com/ 19
  • 20. The result • Chemistry-centric ELNs don’t tend to be well received outside of Chemistry • Frustrating for involved http://www.amphora-research.com/ 20
  • 21. Note • Science is very broad • I am generalising • Your mileage may vary • I’m just trying to help people think http://www.amphora-research.com/ 21
  • 23. Different Styles • Chemistry tends to be pretty structured and routine • Other disciplines have much greater variation in the work http://www.amphora-research.com/ 23
  • 24. Tools • Chemistry tends to focus on the structures, reactions, properties, drawing & animating them etc. • Other disciplines have a much wider set of tools • And use Excel as a “Swiss Army Knife” • Scientists are knowledge workers too http://www.amphora-research.com/ 24
  • 25. Less is more From http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/2006/week30/index.html
  • 26. Part of the problem is the term “ELN” http://www.amphora-research.com/ 26
  • 27. Questions • If the paper notebook didn’t exist would we coin the term “Electronic” notebook? • If it wasn’t for the term “ELN” would we look for one system? • Why are all the “ELN” vendors (outside of chemistry) so different? • Where are the non-chemistry ELNs? http://www.amphora-research.com/ 27
  • 28. Where do they work? • Excel • Blogging tools (e.g. Wordpress) • Word • In-house experiment • Filemaker planning tools • InfoPath/SharePoint • Lotus Notes • ISIS/Draw • OneNote • Wikis • LIMS • ERP
  • 29. What are they doing? • Experiments - just like everyone else • Just because they aren’t working in a product with “ELN” stamped on it, doesn’t mean it isn’t proper science http://www.amphora-research.com/ 29
  • 30. As a rule, it is much better if you pay attention to each discipline individually http://www.amphora-research.com/ 30
  • 31. The “One System” death magnet http://www.amphora-research.com/ 31
  • 32. One System • “You all use the same Paper notebook don’t you?” • “So surely you can all use the same Electronic notebook?” http://www.amphora-research.com/ 32
  • 33. One solution? User quote: Anyone who claims one solution solves all problems... ...is a salesman http://www.amphora-research.com/ 33
  • 34. Do you need one solution? • Not unless you buy something crazily proprietary • In which case you probably don’t want it anyway • Integration is a fact of life http://www.amphora-research.com/ 34
  • 35. Can you buy One Solution? • Yes, if you only do one kind of science • Yes, if you are prepared to do an awful lot of customisation • Yes, if architecture is more important than users • Yes if you will never change what you do http://www.amphora-research.com/ 35
  • 36. General Purpose ELNs • You can do it for small numbers of users and certain styles of work • Where workflow is important • For large numbers of users • The diversity in process will kill you • You end up building an expensive version of Word & Excel http://www.amphora-research.com/ 36
  • 37. General Purpose ELNs Functionality Possible Doomed to fail The organisation will frustrate you Possible Number of users http://www.amphora-research.com/ 37
  • 39. Project Structure • Divide your problem into • Corporate aspects • Different disciples • Solve the corporate stuff centrally • Let the different user groups do what they need to do • Encourage/enforce collaboration http://www.amphora-research.com/ 39
  • 40. Medicinal Chemistry Process Chemistry Molecular Biology Pharmacology (Records, IP protection, Sharing) Corporate aspects Etc. A framework
  • 41. Patent Evidence • Typically this is a broad, thin layer • Consistently applied across the whole company • Keep it out of the scientific systems • Single, well defined place • Under the control of Custodian http://www.amphora-research.com/ 41
  • 42. Records Management • The Cinderella of ELN projects • Desperately important • Clearly something that’s dependent on your own processes http://www.amphora-research.com/ 42
  • 43. The “Deep” systems • If they use structures, they’ll probably want one of the Chemistry-centric ELNs • If they aren’t look at what they have already • You might be able to leave them alone • Just give them something to keep the lawyers happy • This will hopefully be low-impact http://www.amphora-research.com/ 43
  • 44. “Deep Systems” • More than one group might find the same system acceptable - great! • You might want tools from Rescentris, IDBS, Klee etc. to support specific aspects of their work http://www.amphora-research.com/ 44
  • 45. “Deep Systems” • If you do a good job • Everyone gets their ideal work environment • You disrupt them as little as possible • You’ve left the door open for future improvements http://www.amphora-research.com/ 45
  • 47. Chemistry • Chemistry is pretty structured • Buy (or build) them a Chemistry-centric ELN and let them get on with it • The selection process is detailed but at least the work relatively consistently http://www.amphora-research.com/ 47
  • 48. Sources of Chemistry ELNs • If you’re a big pharma, you’re probably already set • With varying success - this isn’t easy • Solutions • Buy off the shelf • Build from what you have • Vendor capture http://www.amphora-research.com/ 48
  • 49. Sources of Chemistry • In Biotechs, you probably can’t afford to build or do vendor capture • Unless Cheminformatics is a core strength • So you’re going to have do as much as you can with off-the-shelf (customised as needed) • Nice selection of vendors, have fun! http://www.amphora-research.com/ 49
  • 50. Biology • Massive diversity • Lots of Microsoft Office and other “non ELN” applications • Best approach is to get out of their way http://www.amphora-research.com/ 50
  • 51. Example • Biology in Janssen (J&J) (IQPC Brussels 2007) • Really good example of in-depth analysis of process • 98% approval rate on a project that size is pretty stunning http://www.amphora-research.com/ 51
  • 52. Some questions you might ask... http://www.amphora-research.com/ 52
  • 53. What about GxP • The needs of GxP & 21CFR11 mandate record keeping at the activity level • You can’t do this Broad Vs Deep model • I’m not sure there’s such a thing as a Generic ELN for regulated areas http://www.amphora-research.com/ 53
  • 54. What about Raw Data? • ELN isn’t the place for raw data • From a records aspect • From a practical aspect • ELN can provide metadata • But store it somewhere else (filesystems are nice!) http://www.amphora-research.com/ 54
  • 55. Patent Reform • The US will never move away from a need to prove invention (that pesky constitution) • Paradoxically, the current versions of Patent Reform will lead other Patent jurisdictions to require Notebooks too! http://www.amphora-research.com/ 55
  • 56. Isn’t this expensive? • Not if you’ve already got perfectly acceptable solutions already • The ROI on software you don’t have to buy is outstanding! http://www.amphora-research.com/ 56
  • 57. Are you on Drugs? • A large number of end-user companies have similar approaches • Most of the case studies are “Deep” systems • Ultimately, this is a much-simplified version of the CENSA architecture http://www.amphora-research.com/ 57
  • 58. Benefits of taking a Broad & Deep approach http://www.amphora-research.com/ 58
  • 59. You get to be a hero/heroine http://www.amphora-research.com/ 59
  • 60. Finding the money is easier http://www.amphora-research.com/ 60
  • 61. Training is easier/non- existent http://www.amphora-research.com/ 61
  • 62. You have a balanced relationship with your vendors http://www.amphora-research.com/ 62
  • 63. You can roll out in phases http://www.amphora-research.com/ 63
  • 64. Your lawyers won’t dictate what you do http://www.amphora-research.com/ 64
  • 65. …Thank You… • Slides will be on our web site tonight • Any questions? http://www.amphora-research.com/ 65
