Estrepsiades is kept awake at night worrying about his son's debts and expenses from his passion for horses. His son Phidippides dreams of horses and chariot races while sleeping soundly. Estrepsiades complains about how his simple life was ruined by marrying his wife from a wealthy family and having a son with expensive tastes.
