3
 The automotive industry is a wide range of
companies and organizations involved in the
design, development, manufacture, marketing, and
selling of motor vehicles.
 It is one of the world's most important economic
sectors by revenue.
4
HISTORY OF AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY.
 The automotive industry began in the 1890s with
hundreds of manufacturers that pioneered the
horseless carriage.
 For many decades, the United States led the world
in total automobile production.
 In 1929 before the Great Depression, the world had
32,028,500 automobiles in use, and the U.S.
automobile industry produced over 90% of them.
 After World War II, the U.S. produced about 75
percent of world's auto production.
 In 1980, the U.S. was overtaken by Japan and
became world's leader again in 1994.
5
 In 2006, Japan narrowly passed the U.S. in
production and held this rank until 2009, when
China took the top spot with 13.8 million units.
 With 19.3 million units manufactured in 2012, China
almost doubled the U.S. production, with 10.3
million units, while Japan was in third place with 9.9
million units.
 Germany, Italy, India and The United Kingdom are
also major automobile manufacturers in the world.

AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY IN INDIA
 The automotive industry in India is one of the largest
automotive markets in the world.
 It had previously been one of the fastest growing
markets globally, but is currently experiencing flat or
negative growth rates.
 India's passenger car and commercial vehicle
manufacturing industry is the sixth largest in the world,
with an annual production of more than 3.9 million units
in 2013.

of passenger cars, behind Japan, South Korea, and
Thailand. In 2010, India beat Thailand to become Asia's
third largest exporter of passenger cars.
10
 The majority of India's car manufacturing industry is
based around three clusters in the south, west and
north.
 The southern cluster consisting of Chennai is the
biggest with 35% of the revenue share. The
western hub near Mumbai and Pune contributes to
33% of the market and the northern cluster around
the National Capital Region contributes 32%.
 In 2011, there were 3,695 factories producing
automotive parts in all of India. The average firm
made US$6 million in annual revenue with profits
close to US$400 thousand.
11
 Chennai, houses the India operations of Ford,
Hyundai, Renault, Mitsubishi, Nissan, BMW,
Hindustan Motors, Daimler, Caparo, Mini, and
Datsun.
 Gurgaon and Manesar in Haryana form the
northern cluster where the country's largest car

 The Chakan corridor near Pune, Maharashtra is the
western cluster with companies like General
Motors, Volkswagen, Skoda, Mahindra and
Mahindra, Tata Motors, Mercedes Benz, Land

forms part of the western cluster.
 Another emerging cluster is in the state of Gujarat
with manufacturing facility of General Motors in
Halol and Tata Nano at their plant in Sanand. Ford,
Maruti Suzuki and Peugeot-Citroen plants are also
set to come up in Gujarat.
 Kolkata with Hindustan Motors.
 Noida with Honda and Bangalore with Toyota are

HISTORY OF TOYOTA MOTORS
 Toyota was started in 1933 as a division of Toyoda
Automatic Loom Works devoted to the production of
automobiles under the direction of the founder's son,
Kiichiro Toyoda.
 Its first vehicles were the A1 passenger car and the G1
in 1935.
 The Toyota Motor Co. was established as an
independent company.
 Vehicles were originally sold under the name "Toyoda"
,from the family name of the company's founder, Kiichiro
Toyoda. In April 1936, Toyoda's first passenger car, the
Model AA, was completed. The sales price was 3,350
yen, 400 yen cheaper than Ford or GM cars.
19
 From September 1947, Toyota's small-sized vehicles
were sold under the name "Toyopet“. The first vehicle
sold under this name was the Toyopet SA, but it also
included vehicles such as the Toyopet SB light truck,
Toyopet Stout light truck, Toyopet Crown, Toyopet
Master, and the Toyopet Corona.
 Toyota, Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. began
building plants in the US by the early 1980s.
 Toyota received its first Japanese Quality Control Award
at the start of the 1980s and began participating in a
wide variety of motorsports.
 In 1982, the Toyota Motor Company and Toyota Motor
Sales merged into one company, the Toyota Motor
Corporation. 20
 In 1984 Toyota entered into a joint venture with General
Motors called the New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc,
NUMMI, operating an automobile-manufacturing plant in
Fremont, California.
 Toyota started to establish new brands at the end of the
1980s, with the launch of their luxury division Lexus in 1989.
 In the 1990s, Toyota began to branch out from producing
mostly compact cars by adding many larger and more
luxurious vehicles to its lineup, including a full-sized pickup,
the T100, several lines of SUVs; a sport version of the Camry,
known as the Camry Solara and the Scion brand, a group of
several affordable, yet sporty, automobiles targeted
specifically to young adults.
 Toyota also began production of the world's best-selling hybrid
car, the Prius, in 1997.
