Integrated management of neonatal & childhood illness
Introduction
 The concept was developed by WHO & UNICEF in mid 1990
 It works towards controlling of morbidity & mortality rates among children
 It is a curative, preventive & promotive strategy aimed at reducing the death
& frequency & severity of illness and disability.
 It also contributes to improve growth & development of under-five children.
Major components of IMNCI
 Improvement of family & community practices towards child health care.
 Provision of essential drugs & their supplies.(ors, anti-helminthic drugs, etc)
 Betterment of technical skills of health care providers.
 Community involvement in health care programmes of children
 Equitable distribution of health care facilities & maximum reach out to all
pediatric population.

 Vaccination services
 Vitamin-A & micro-nutrient supplementation
 Breast feeding

 Malaria control programmes
 Counseling on various health problems.
Principles of IMNCI
 Examination of Under-fives: All Children below 5 yrs of age should be
examined for the conditions which indicate referral or hospitalization.
 Routine assessment: Children must be routinely assessed for major
symptoms, nutritional & immunizational status, feeding problems & other
potential problems.
 Classification of Under-fives: Based on the presence of selected clinical
signs, the child is placed in classification.
 Colour coding: Classifications are colour coded & suggests - referral (pink),
Treatment in health care setting (yellow) and management at home (green).
 Involvement of Care takers: Care takers are actively involved in the
treatment of children.
 Counseling of care takers: about home care including feeding, fluid
management, & when to return to the health care setting, etc.
