Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges There is indeed a large proportion of mismatch between training in schools and actual jobs. This is the major problem at the tertiary level and it is also the cause of the existence of a large group of educated unemployed or underemployed.

Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges (2) Deteriorating Quality of Higher Education; There has been a decline in the quality of higher education as the results of licensure examinations in various degree board programs were way below the target mean score.
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges Low Performance in licensure exams across all disciplines from 38.6 % in 2008 to 36.2 % in 2009
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges DepEd Data Achievement rate of fourth year high school students in Mathematics dropped from: 50.70% in SY 2005-2006 to 47.82% in SY 2006-2007
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges As stated by Van Vankelburg, “ Students entering college courses are poorly prepared in Mathematics”.
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges Educators Journal’s Report Students nowadays are getting poorer in Mathematics as shown in the low grades and passing rates of students even in premier schools….
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges EDUCATION is the key! Thus, it should be a top priority of every country.
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges It cannot be denied that the diminishing importance we give to education is all too obvious in the results of national and international assessment tests of our students, specifically on the 2003 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS).
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges Teachers bear the responsibility of educating our youth…. Recent data that we have gathered show that majority of the faculty credentials are inadequate… AY 2008-2009 Location Doctorate Degree Master’s Degree Baccalaureate Degree National Scope 10 % (12,532) 36 % (46,346) 54 % (70,446) Region IVA (alone) 25% (2,053) 54% (4,886) 21% (1,884)
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges Lack of accreditation of HEIs and programs Out of the 2,180 HEIs in the country, only about less than 500 HEIs have accreditation in AY 2008-2010.
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges Inadequacy of facilities and equipment Among the 1,792 HEIs (excluding SUC campuses), only 100 or 5.6 % HEIs can be assumed to have adequate facilities.
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges Increasing number of SUC satellite campuses and increasing programs beyond their original mandate . There are now 110 SUCs in the country while the SUC campuses are now totaling 388.
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges Quality of Education has also been a decline in our country’s global competitiveness. Based on Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings - Top 500 2010 3 Philippine Universities 2006 4 Philippine Universities
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges Science and Education Institute (SEI) on Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) in 2003 8 th grade (2 nd year high school) student 41 st out of 45 participating countries 4 th grade students 23 rd out of 25 participating countries
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges (3) Limited Access to Quality Higher Education. As evidenced by the low participation rate and low completion rate caused by increasing costs and limited student assistance programs. Out of 100 pupils who enrolled in Grade 1, only 14 will graduate in higher education.

Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges If we work together, we can create an educational environment capable of generating and nurturing development that will produce globally competent individuals who are well equipped with general knowledge and intellectual capacities needed by the industry….
Higher Education Institutions: Addressing Current Issues and Challenges CHED needs your help – we need the help of professional associations like AHEIR. Let us all together chart the direction of our higher education in the country.
