INTRODUCTION
In the Second Quarter of this year we reached out to 26,013 patients (22,580 in Bihar and 3,433 in Jharkhand),
expanded our Mobile Clinic services in 2 new villages of Bihar, namely, Mahuyet (Wazirganj block) and Mahtab
Bigha (Parhainya block), and installed sanitary napkin vending and burning machines in three schools of Gaya
district. We organized our first Medical Camp in Jharkhand. This one-day free medical assistance saw a turn-out
of an impressive 125 patients.
We have purchased two new e-rickshaws, trained and employed a needy woman as an e-rickshaw driver. A
second woman is under training and will be ready to take to the streets by the beginning of the third quarter.
216 women have benefitted from our vocational workshop on Bindi-making1 . Our free computer training
courses is currently imparting education to 48 young and enthusiastic youths from disadvantaged
backgrounds.
A total of 5,312 households in Bihar and Jharkhand have benefitted from our Kitchen Garden program in this
quarter. 2,703 jute bags have been distributed in Bihar and Jharkhand. A new NFE centre has been opened at
Simariya with 24 students. 48 Solar lights have been installed across Kadal, Barsuddi and Chando.
This report provides the details of all the activities and events that were undertaken in the second quarter of
2015.

MOBILE CLINICS & MEDICAL CAMP
Mobile Clinics, Bihar
Mobile Clinics, Jharkhand
The second quarter of 2015 saw 13,386 patients at Mobile Clinics (11,757 in Bihar and 1,629 in Jharkhand) and
125 patients at a Medical Camp conducted in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.
In lieu of our intention to reduce medical dependence of our beneficiaries on us and in order to reach out to the
unreached we decided to phase out our mobile clinic services from the villages which have been receiving our
healthcare assistance for several years and intervene in new rural areas.
With this objective we have expanded our Mobile Clinic services in Bihar to two new villages, namely, Mahuyet
(Wazirganj block) and Mahtab Bigha (Parhainya block). In the coming months we plan to phase out from the
villages which have been receiving our medical assistance for several years and extend our programs to rural
areas that are in serious dearth of primary healthcare services.
In the month of May we organized our first Medical Camp in Jharkhand, at Bodhi Society, Jamshedpur. The one-
day camp saw an impressive turn-out of 125 patients.

HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM
We have been carrying out our HEP successfully educating the villagers, especially the rural women, about
health and nutrition, following up and vaccinating pregnant women and new-born and little children.
We have installed sanitary napkin vending and burning machines at two of the biggest schools in Gaya.
Our Menstrual Health Matters program has reached out to 9,378 needy females who otherwise cannot afford to
buy sanitary napkins and have to resort to unhygienic menstrual protection.

EDUCATION
BABUA SCHOOLS: INFORMAL EDUCATION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
Our informal education centres for young children, Babua schools, continue to run successfully with the
children attending regular classes. We have replaced the thatched roof of the school building at Dema with
durable corrugated roofing in an effort to protect the children from scorching heat during summers and
rainwater seepage into the class rooms during monsoons.
YOGA
About 350 rural children are benefitting from our regular Yoga and fitness classes.

NON-FORMAL EDUCATION (NFE)
Owing to the demand for the program we have launched a NFE centre in Simariya with 24 students. Apart from
the regular educational classes students from all the NFE centres got the opportunity to add yet another
vocation to their livelihood skills; Bindi making.

Snack Box at a shop in Bihar Drawing Competition
Jute bag distribution at Medical Camp in Jharkhand
Recognising our efforts to beautification and preservation of the environment the State government of Bihar
presented us with 500 tree saplings. We are constructing the bamboo fencing for the trees and making other
necessary preparations for planting the saplings during monsoons.
2,703 jute bags (2,205 in Bihar and 498 in Jharkhand) were distributed among our patients, school children,
and other interested beneficiaries.
We have conducted drawing and speech competitions in 14 urban and rural schools in Bihar with the aim of
raising environmental awareness among young children.
10 snack boxes were distributed among the vendors and shop owners with the aim of promoting food hygiene.
RAINWATER HARVESTING
We have installed rainwater harvesting tanks in 5 households at Karhara village, 1 household at Lohjhara. 1
tank was set up at our community toilet in Banahi. As the water tanks will come into use during the monsoons
we will be installing several more during the third quarter.
SOLAR ELECTRICITY
Solar sets being distributed among villagers
While we had installed 114 out of the 220 solar sets in the villages of Kadal, Barsuddi and Chando in the first
quarter, this time we reached out to 48 households. We expect to install the remaining solar sets in the third
quarter of the year.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
SMALL MONEY BIG CHANGE
Corrugated roofing at Dema Mobile Clinic (L) and Babua School (R) Well being dug at Dema
Community Toilets are now functional and being used by the villagers
The construction of community toilets at Kadal , Chando and Banahi is complete and the beneficiaries have
started using them. The toilet at Bhupnagar was competed at the end of this quarter and will be open for use
August onwards. The community members are fulfilling their responsibilities of cleaning and maintaining the
toilets regularly.
We, through regular community meetings, are encouraging and helping the beneficiaries to adapt to the new
practice of using toilets properly. Currently 25 people in Banahi, 20 in Chando and 15 in Kadal are using toilets
on a daily basis.
We are digging a well at Dema. This will not only act as a source of drinking water but will also be used for
irrigating more than 10 acres of the surrounding agricultural fields.
We have built corrugated roofs in Dema; one at the Babua school and another in the courtyard of the building
where our Mobile Clinic team serves patients. This roofing will give respite to the children and patients from
the scorching summer heat and heavy monsoons.
We have been undergoing preparatory work for a project that will begin in the third quarter; an irrigation
channel will be constructed at Lohjhara with the expectation of watering at least 50 acres of fertile cultivable
land.
KITCHEN GARDEN
Kitchen Garden at a village in Jharkhand Seed distribution at a village in Bihar
We have reached out to 5,312 households across Bihar and Jharkhand in this quarter. The program has moved
beyond our operational villages to reach out to those in the surrounding areas, as shown in the following tables.
The kitchen gardens in such villages are directly monitored and observed by our village motivators and
coordinators. Indirect surveillance is applied to the kitchen gardens grown by our OPD patients at their
households.

Our free computer training program is now teaching 48 needy and bright youths. Owing to the growing
demand for our course and the limited space for accommodating more students we are planning to rent a
separate room within Bodhgaya, near our OPD. By the next quarter we plan to make provision for a bigger
computer lab for catering to more students.

ANNEX: CASE STUDY
Lalti Devi
Lalti Devi, resident of village Banahi, is one of those who, along with her family, regularly use the newly built
community toilet in their village. Sharing her experience with us she says that previously, apart for the lack of
safety that she and her daughter would be exposed to when out at night to relieve themselves they also faced
the risk of being bitten by snakes, scorpions and other poisonous insects.
The community toilet built by Karuna-Shechen has given her family and other villagers respite from the various
dangers that they had to face on a daily basis while defecating in the open.
Lalti Devi along with 4-5 other women washes and maintains the community toilets for women. She finds the
toilet facilities very convenient and satisfying as an individual and mother of a young daughter.

  • 9. Page 9 of 22 The second quarter of 2015 saw 13,386 patients at Mobile Clinics (11,757 in Bihar and 1,629 in Jharkhand) and 125 patients at a Medical Camp conducted in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. In lieu of our intention to reduce medical dependence of our beneficiaries on us and in order to reach out to the unreached we decided to phase out our mobile clinic services from the villages which have been receiving our healthcare assistance for several years and intervene in new rural areas. With this objective we have expanded our Mobile Clinic services in Bihar to two new villages, namely, Mahuyet (Wazirganj block) and Mahtab Bigha (Parhainya block). In the coming months we plan to phase out from the villages which have been receiving our medical assistance for several years and extend our programs to rural areas that are in serious dearth of primary healthcare services. In the month of May we organized our first Medical Camp in Jharkhand, at Bodhi Society, Jamshedpur. The one- day camp saw an impressive turn-out of 125 patients. We have conducted drawing and speech competitions in 14 urban and rural schools in Bihar with the aim of raising environmental awareness among young children. 10 snack boxes were distributed among the vendors and shop owners with the aim of promoting food hygiene.
  • 14. Page 14 of 22 RAINWATER HARVESTING We have installed rainwater harvesting tanks in 5 households at Karhara village, 1 household at Lohjhara. 1 tank was set up at our community toilet in Banahi. As the water tanks will come into use during the monsoons we will be installing several more during the third quarter. SOLAR ELECTRICITY Solar sets being distributed among villagers While we had installed 114 out of the 220 solar sets in the villages of Kadal, Barsuddi and Chando in the first quarter, this time we reached out to 48 households. • 16. Page 16 of 22 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SMALL MONEY BIG CHANGE Corrugated roofing at Dema Mobile Clinic (L) and Babua School (R) Well being dug at Dema Community Toilets are now functional and being used by the villagers The construction of community toilets at Kadal , Chando and Banahi is complete and the beneficiaries have started using them. The toilet at Bhupnagar was competed at the end of this quarter and will be open for use August onwards. The community members are fulfilling their responsibilities of cleaning and maintaining the toilets regularly. We, through regular community meetings, are encouraging and helping the beneficiaries to adapt to the new practice of using toilets properly. Currently 25 people in Banahi, 20 in Chando and 15 in Kadal are using toilets on a daily basis.
  • 17. Page 17 of 22 We are digging a well at Dema. This will not only act as a source of drinking water but will also be used for irrigating more than 10 acres of the surrounding agricultural fields. We have built corrugated roofs in Dema; one at the Babua school and another in the courtyard of the building where our Mobile Clinic team serves patients. This roofing will give respite to the children and patients from the scorching summer heat and heavy monsoons. We have been undergoing preparatory work for a project that will begin in the third quarter; an irrigation channel will be constructed at Lohjhara with the expectation of watering at least 50 acres of fertile cultivable land. KITCHEN GARDEN Kitchen Garden at a village in Jharkhand Seed distribution at a village in Bihar We have reached out to 5,312 households across Bihar and Jharkhand in this quarter. The program has moved beyond our operational villages to reach out to those in the surrounding areas, as shown in the following tables. The kitchen gardens in such villages are directly monitored and observed by our village motivators and coordinators. Indirect surveillance is applied to the kitchen gardens grown by our OPD patients at their households.

  • 22. Page 22 of 22 ANNEX: CASE STUDY Lalti Devi Lalti Devi, resident of village Banahi, is one of those who, along with her family, regularly use the newly built community toilet in their village. Sharing her experience with us she says that previously, apart for the lack of safety that she and her daughter would be exposed to when out at night to relieve themselves they also faced the risk of being bitten by snakes, scorpions and other poisonous insects. The community toilet built by Karuna-Shechen has given her family and other villagers respite from the various dangers that they had to face on a daily basis while defecating in the open. Lalti Devi along with 4-5 other women washes and maintains the community toilets for women. She finds the toilet facilities very convenient and satisfying as an individual and mother of a young daughter.
