3. ABOUT SUBJECT
Cleaning devices have been used for centuries to clean up, in, and around the home
and workplace.
CLEANLINESS? Absence of dirt, including dust, stains, bad smells and garbage
WHY CLEANING? Purposes of cleanliness include health, beauty, absence of offensive
odor, avoidance of shame, and to avoid the spreading of dirt and contaminants to
oneself and others. It also helps in better mental health since the environment around
person is clean and makes him think better
WHY THIS SUBJECT? There are many electrical and mechanical cleaning devices
available today in market. But the majority world (mass) in India still uses the
mechanical devices like broom, which are not changed radically for centuries in
matter of design and materials.
4. TYPES OF PRODUCTS
BROOMS: A broom is a cleaning tool consisting of stiff fibers attached to, and roughly
parallel to, a cylindrical handle, the broomstick
BRUSHES: Brush refers to devices with bristles, wire or other filaments, used for cleaning
WIPERS: A tool with a flat, smooth rubber blade, used to remove or control the flow of
liquid on a flat surface
MOPS: A mop is a textile mounted on a handle used in cleaning. It is generally used for
cleaning floors
12. HISTORY
Native grasses were dried and bundled together, often decoratively woven at the top
or tied tightly with yarn or fabric to keep the brooms together
In 1797 Levi Dickenson, a farmer from Hadley, Massachusetts, used a bundle of
tasseled sorghum grass (also called broomcom) to make a broom for his wife
United Society of Believers, called the Shakers, quickly moved into the broom-making
business about 1798 by growing broomcom and making brooms
By about 1810, wooden handles with holes drilled into them were used to lash the
broomcom to the handle using wooden pegs
Theodore Bates of Shakers determined that flat brooms would move dust and dirt more
efficiently; So the bundles were put into a vice, flattened, and sewn in place.
Shakers found that wire more effectively secured the broomcom to the wooden
handle rather than tying or weaving. They developed treadle machinery to wind
broomcorn around the handle while securing it tightly
For last nearly 150 years, the design of broom has not been changed radically
14. COMPONENTS, MATERIALS & MANUFACTURING
HANDLE : it holds individual bristles ,
handle grip, hook for hanging,
aesthetics, to hold whole device . its
3rd/4th recycled plastic ,form is made
by blow molding, which is cheaper
process
COCONUT LEAF BRISTLES: filler
material , to achieve required handle
diameter. Made by dried coconut leaf
available in south India majorly ,cost per
unit is 5-6 Rs
MAIN BRISTLES : swiping , collect the
dust. (thysarolaear maxima, hindi-kuchi ,
tiger grass) grows on hill slops , river
banks , in India its available in Orissa. 25
rs/kg
HANDLE: holds nylon bristle. Made up
of Poly Ethylene.
BRISTLES: Nylon hair for scrubbing ,
takes out the dirt which is stuck to the
surface
15. LONG HANDLE: to hold tool , access without
bending ,gives speed to task. Material: HDPE (High
Density Poly Ethylene)
SOCKET: it holds threads and handle together ,
spreads threads to bigger area , some models have
mechanism which squeezes threads to take out
water.
THREADS: absorbs the liquid dirt. Material: Cotton
breaded rugs (Synthetic)
LONG HANDLE: to hold tool , access without
bending ,gives speed to task , gives angle to floor
which gives close contact and easy gliding for wiping.
Material: HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene)
SOCKET: holds wiper and handle together
RIVET: holds wiper foam with socket.
Material: MS zinc plated
WIPER PAD: moves liquid dirt from one to
another place. Material: EVA (Ethyl Vinyl Acetate)
16. MANUFACTURING
Broom manufacturers grow tiger grass in farms
Crop is cut down and dried for 3-5 moths
Taken to different manufacturing units (small scale industries, NGOs)
Workers bunch the coconut bristles (filler) and tiger grass together using template and tied together using metal wire
The hard stems of tiger grass are beautifully weaved together which serves for keeping the broom together as well as for
aesthetics
17. OPPORTUNITY
Design of household broom is not changed for many years radically
New Nylon hair brooms are not easily accepted and adopted by people
they are not very efficient also
Comfort factor is not thought about for household brooms as they are for
professional brooms
Durability

31. DISPLAY AND AMBIENCE
Brooms are kept vertically bunched
together in waste containers of oil and
paint
Mostly kept outside the shop, in the corner, not very visible. Kept away from the
main display of the shop, so not to affect the visual appearance of the shop

the visual appearance of the shop
36. Preferences of consumer
âMonkey Broomsâ is the most sold brand. The price
difference is not much compared to other brands but the
appearance of the product is much better than others
because of packaging and graphic as well as the fresh
colours which are used. It is also longer than other brooms
which directly indicates that the product is offering more
than others in same price
Statistics of sell
On an average the range sell per month is 30-60 brooms.
On festive occasions like Dassera and Diwali which falls in
October, the sell increases up to 100-120 brooms because
of religious reasons.
Brand loyalty of consumers
People donât have brand preference. They choose the
broom from available stock which they think is best and
suggested by the retailer.
Price sensitivity of product
Broom is very price sensitive product. People usually donât
buy broom which are pricing more than 50 INR. People
are aware about the brand âGalaâ and the better quality
of it but people donât buy it because of high price i.e. 65-
80 INR
Retailerâs feedback
Retailers have to arrange something (waste containers,
unused bottle crates) to stock broom. Because of stuffing
brooms together the packaging gets damaged. Many
packages are opened to get the feel of product, once
the package is opened the sell becomes difficult.
Retailerâs way of explaining
Retailer tells the consumer to check the product
themselves. He suggests the product which he himself
thinks better and which gives him more profit.
After sell service
Users come back after some period to replace the
broom (usually plastic handle brooms) since the grass
sticks are not bind together properly and starts to come
off.

46. The household floor cleaning device which is used everyday twice by
housewives and/or maids is not very efficient since it doesnât give
complete cleaning in first go. The device is not very ergonomic since user
has to bend most of the time. It makes the user feels diminished
unconsciously in presence of other people due to the posture. The face
comes directly in contact with fine dust particles, inhaling of which may
lead to health issues.
The product is not aesthetically good so that it can be part of the
ambience of the place . Storage is also an issue since wrong practice will
lead in affecting product efficiency and lifespan. Overall quality of
product is not good.
The device/product has to be cleaned manually every time the problem
of dirt getting stuck occurs.
