The document proposes an exhibit about orphan trains that transported orphaned children from eastern cities to western states between 1854 and 1930. The exhibit would use multimedia like video, audio, and interactive activities to: 1) explain the poor social conditions that led to the orphan train movement; 2) describe the process of placing out children through charitable organizations; and 3) allow visitors to learn about the experiences of children transported by sharing their stories. The goal is to educate visitors about this period of American history in an engaging way.

replica of real train
station
Visitors board a replica of a train much like the orphan trains sent west. Half of the train contains seating like the original trains. The other half of the train is an elevated stage. Passengers will be visited by actors depicting people who rode the trains during this time (agents, children ….) Q & A will be available before the train de-boards (When live performances are not available children can play in the puppet theater and tell stories from their perspective)
