In May 2009 this all came to a sudden unscheduled stop. Unbeknownst to anyone, Ian was slowly dying in his own bed suffering a slow hemorraage into his brain. Many enterprise Agile adoptions begin with a CIO on a stage announcing a Call to Agility. Coaches are engaged, teams respond enthusiastically and the executives eagerly await the promised benefits. When reality hits and things aren’t changing fast enough, the finger pointing starts, and more often than not the frozen middle are caught in the crossfire. To add insult to injury, when an organisation introduces Scrum, middle management is often left wondering what their role is and how can they contribute? Many Agilists have suggested we should get rid of them. In my view, you need to embrace them as they do have a role to play, and an important one at that. In this session, we will explore techniques for harnessing the energy of managers at any level: frozen or otherwise! We will help them accelerate their journey towards becoming agile leaders. In this presentation we explain the rationale behind the FPGA. Discoveries associated with a more precise comprehension of the connections inside human brain are foreseen as disruptive in many fields: from improved neurological disorders treatment to strong artificial intelligence, as well as more precise and less invasive diagnostic tools and, finally, improved Big Data systems. For this purpose, Brain Networks (BNs) are used to quickly and accurately model and map neural interconnections inside human brain. A common statistical tool that helps analysis and definition of BNs is the Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC), which is able to identify the correlation between neurons or groups of neighboring neurons. However, the computational power that commonly available technologies provide allows scientists to analyze only few hundred neural nodes within reasonable time. Increasing the number of analyzed neurons and speeding up the computation are both fundamental steps to achieve more accurate results, and to allow the scientiﬁc and medical research to progress. This work presents an implementation of BNs on Xilinx VIRTEX-7 FPGA. Our goal is to tackle the problems previously described, in order to provide a fast hardware implementation able to support the computation of a remarkable number of neurons.

Presented at Open World Forum 2012. Abstract: As FOSS communities look to bring on new contributors, we're faced with a fundamental challenge - our new would-be users, contributors and advocates are largely operating in a world of non-free software. While the fact that most folks are using proprietary software - and that FOSS advocates would prefer they use FOSS - is nothing new, the rise of cloud computing puts a different spin on the problem. The ease of use promised by software as a service applications, the ubiquity and popularity of non-free social networks and the great increase in non-free real-time communications tools presents us with a more difficult use case: how do we convince folks of the value of FOSS when they expect things to "just work" and want to "hang out" where their friends are? In this talk, Leslie Hawthorn will explore the tensions between effectively engaging our audience of would-be converts to FOSS while maintaining the values of software freedom. Specifically, she will explore the activist roots of the free software movement and how these activist principles can be channelled to effectively amplify the value of FOSS amongst users of cloud services and other non-free tools. Last but not least, she will discuss some libre tools that can be used in our community outreach activities, allowing us to effectively engage with our audience's user experience expectations while preserving software freedom in our discourse.
