The document provides an overview of Islamic education presented by Shaya'a Othman. It defines Islamic education as the complete development of an individual in four areas: thinking (tafkir), nurturing ethical and spiritual values (tarbiyah), having excellent character and social behavior (ta'dib), and receiving, imparting and practicing knowledge (ta'lim) of Islamic law (shariah). It contrasts this holistic approach that integrates shariah into all subjects with secular education that divorces religion from learning. The document advocates for integrated Islamic schools that teach both religious and technical knowledge based on shariah to develop students according to Islamic principles.

4. Tarbiyah
•comes from the root word raba (to grow,
to increase, to rear, spiritual nurturing),
•implies a state of ethical and spiritual
nurturing in developing the individuals
potential and
• guidance of the child to the state of
complete maturity
5. Ta’dib
•derived from the root word aduba
(to be refined, disciplined, cultured, well
mannered),
•which suggests the social aspects of a
human being including
•the process of character development and
good social behavior.
6. Ta’lim
•the root word of ‘alima

9. The Last Messenger of God,

“An hour of thinking is

worshipping:”

10. “……..You do not teach engineering, mathematics,
economic as isolated entities, but you teach thinking
through such subjects. In other words, thinking is the
foreground, and subjects are background, a reverse
to the present scenario. With this approach students
think to learn rather than learn to think”
“…Curriculum experts must design, construct and
formulate the curriculum in such a manner to give
centrality to thinking in all subjects areas.”

Chairman Of Higher Education Leadership Academy [AKEPT]
Think to Learn rather than Learn to Think
