4. "Digitization makes the most traditional forms of humanistic
scholarship more necessary, not less. But the differences
mean that we need to reinvent, not reaffirm, the way that
historians do history."
5. Data Consisting of What?
‣
Basic types of content that we are used to deal with:
‣
‣
‣
‣
‣
Text
Numbers
Images
Video
Other, more “complex” stuff:
‣
‣
‣
‣
Relations, connections, links - a genealogy
Time and space coords - the path of migratory birds
Animations – a piece of courseware
3D models – the plan of your house
6. Case Study: TAPoR and Text
‣
Text Analysis Portal for Research (2004 - 2008)
7. TAPoR Mission Statement
‣
The Text Analysis Portal for Research is an internationally
recognized research infrastructure project designed to
support research using electronic media texts and computer
assisted text analysis tools. This includes supporting
research into text representation, text analysis tool
development, text analysis techniques and theory, and the
access and usability of electronic text environments. Text is
defined broadly to include linguistic texts, multimedia rich
texts, and computer languages.
8. TAPoR Vision
‣
That electronic texts, text analysis techniques, and usable tools
be widely available to researchers for the pursuit of
knowledge in a fashion that encourages reflection about
representation and technique.
9. TAPoR Infrastructure Goals
‣
The infrastructure goals of the TAPoR project for the first years
are to support the following:
‣ Local nodes with appropriately configured servers and labs
that can support projects at the participating institutions.
‣ A portal that makes text analysis tools available in a usable
fashion to scholars across Canada and beyond.
10. TAPoR Research Agenda
‣
‣
‣
‣
‣
‣
‣
‣
Communication means to share ideas around text analysis;
Usability and access in the context of large scale projects enabled
by the TAPoR infrastructure;
Effective ways of text index for efficient search and retrieval;
Development of innovative text tools and techniques.
Scholarly electronic text, electronic editorial to further our
understanding of electronic text representation.
Research projects that further our understanding of the
representation of multimedia rich texts.
Development of new researchers interested in the field;
Participation of Canadian researchers in international projects.
11. TAPoR Activities
‣
‣
‣
‣
‣
‣
TAPoR nodes @ Canadian universities to support projects specific
to their research community;
@McMaster partnership w/ Open Sky to develop a portal for
researchers across Canada and abroad;
Regular symposia and other gatherings on the subject of
computer assisted text analysis to allow students and
researchers to share ideas, techniques, and research;
Usable tools to make text analysis accessible to our colleagues;
Publishing peer reviewed works to further understanding of
techniques and applications of text analysis;
Training new researchers in this field.
25. Many Eyes Objective and Vision
‣
"Many Eyes is a public web site that allows users to
gather data, visualize it, and discuss their visualizations.
Within IBM Research, we used the site as an
experimental platform to test our research hypotheses
about the ability of visualizations to spur communication
and social interaction, and how that activity may yield
new insights into data. "
