Publishing Writing Ideas  For students Here are some ideas of different ways to publish your work, starting from the simplest to the more complex and time consuming (but fun)! Written by Jacqui Sharp Updated September 2009

Paper and Pens Use a large piece of paper and colour pens to publish your story. Use colours to distinguish between ,[object Object]

Whiteboard Photo Using a variety of pens and  your best handwriting  publish your story onto a  Whiteboard.  Illustrate it and take a photo. You might need to add lines to guide the children’s writing as they find it hard to write in a straight line. Take a photo and  Print out.
Blackboard Photo Using a variety of chalk and your best  handwriting publish your story onto  a Blackboard. Illustrate it and take a  photo. You might need to add lines to guide the children’s writing as they find it hard to write in a straight line. Take a photo and  Print out.
Publishing Paper Choose from the selection ofpublishing paper to hand writeyour final copy. Create your own publishing paper with writing lines, bordersand spaces for student created graphics or fancy headings. Print out WordArt headings or graphics and glue in spaces.
Publish in Kidspiration Click the Publish button and finishpublishing your story in Word. When you click on the Publish button, it will open up in Word. KidPix Insert a photo or draw a picture that has something to do with your story.  Choose a suitable font and type your story. Use the paint can to fill in the background. KidPix is an old favourite for publishing and there are many  ways to present stories using the tools available. Use the Paint  can for backgrounds, use the background button to set a  background picture. Insert Photos or the child can draw a picture.
Mimio OR IWB publish Publish your story using IWBsoftware.Use the coloured pen options and graphics to illustrate it. Students love using the Interactive Whiteboard. If it is not  being used let a student publish their work on it using the pens  to write their story.
Make a comic Take some photos and insertinto Comic Life.  Type your story into the speech bubbles. Choose a template, drag the photos across and drag on the  Speech bubbles and narrative boxes. Comic Life free trial for both Win and Mac  http://plasq.com/downloads/
Make a comic Draw pictures to insertinto Comic Life. Type your story into the speech bubblesand narrative boxes. Create Pictures in Paint or KidPix. Save them as jpegs in Paint and Export them in KidPix as jpegs.
Make a comic in Word Draw pictures or insert photosinto Shapes to insertinto Word. Type your story into the speech bubblesand narrative boxes. Insert a Shape into each separate slide, add pictures to them Office 2003: go to Fill Effects, Picture tab, select PictureOffice 2007: insert a Photo, click Format tab, click on shape in  Picture Shape. Insert speech bubble shapes from Autoshapes or Shapes. Add text.
Comic Slideshow Insert Photos or drawings into AutoShapes. Make them into a slideshow using PowerPointor Keynote. Add speech bubbles and narrative boxes to publish your story. Insert a Shape into each separate slide, add pictures to them Office 2003: go to Fill Effects, Picture tab, select PictureOffice 2007: insert a Photo, click Format tab, click on shape in Picture Shape.  Insert speech bubble shapes from Autoshapes or Shapes.  Add text.
PowerPoint Recount/Explanation/Procedural Take some photos, create your own graphics or use computer graphics. Type/Paste your story into PowerPoint. Be creative when adding your photos to your slideshow. Some of your photos could be displayed over the whole slide with the  text on top. Use maps to set the scene.
Photo Story Import your photos, Add text, Add a voice over, Add Music, Save as a Movie. Windows only: Create a movie with photos.
iPhoto book  Create an iPhoto book.  Choose a theme, Insert some photos into the theme. Type in your story. Mac only: Put all the photos you want to use into a folder and  then make an iPhoto book.
iMovie Import your photos, Add text, Add a voice over, Add Music, Save as a Movie. Mac only: Put all the photos you want to use into a folder and  then make an iMovie recording your voice and adding music.
MovieMaker Video a story that you have created with toys and the movie set. Import into MovieMaker. Add a voice-over retelling the story. Windows only: Put all the photos you want to use into a folder  and then make a Movie recording your voice and adding music.
Journal Story Import photos, resize so they fill the page. Type your story in textbox chunks and place on the page.  Be creative when adding your photos to your page. Use the Washout feature to fade the photos or Recolour in Word 2007. Fill the whole page with photos, it could be one photo covering the whole page and then 3 small photos layered on top. Or spread three to a page. Type/Paste your text into textboxes over the photos.
Podcast Record your voice telling the story. Add some music. Save it as a Podcast. Record yourself reading the story either into an iPod or use the  Microphone on the computer. Record in GarageBand (Mac) or  Audacity(Win). Add music, jingles and stingers, send as a  Podcast to iTunes. Download onto an iPod or listen to iTunes on the computer.
Class Writing Blog Add an entry to our class blog by  publishing yourStory. Add photos  or graphics to illustrate it. Students can type/paste their story directly into a blog page. If inserting photos, make sure they are named with a unique   name before uploading (particularly when uploading to wiki  pages).
Publish to your Wikipage Publish your story on your Wikipage.Remember to use a readable fontand heading. Students can type/paste their story directly into a blog page. If inserting photos, make sure they are named with a unique  name before uploading (particularly when uploading to wiki  pages).
Journal Writing Publish your story on Penzu http://www.penzu.com Add pictures, Print out or  take a screen capture and insertinto a blog or a wiki Create an account if you want to save these stories or just click onthe ‘Give it a try’ if you are going to take a screen capture.
Cartoonised Photos Insert photos into befunky.comand cartoonise them. Add them to PowerPoint. Cartoonise your photos in Befunky  http://www.befunky.com/index.php Or Fotoflexer http://fotoflexer.com/ Insert them into shapes and make a Cartoon slideshow  (see slide 14).
Publish Online in Zoho or Google Docs Type your story into Googleor Zoho.Illustrate itand sharewith others. Zoho and Google Docs can be accessed online so students can  work on the publishing at home. Also they can be shared with  others which allows for peer review. (Terms of Service advise  that there is a R13 rating for creating accounts).
Slideshare Save your story to  Slideshare and publish  in ourblog or on our Wiki  Page. Slideshare Save your story to  Slideshare.net and publish  in ourblog or on our Wiki Page. Once you have created your story in PowerPoint or Word, upload  To the class slideshare account, and then get the embed code  and embed into your blog or wiki. Mac users resave your ‘Pages or Keynote’ as a ‘Word or  PowerPoint’ or as a PDF and then upload to Slideshare.
Slideboom Create your story in PowerPoint and upload to slideboom.comand then publish in our blog or on our Wiki Page. If you have an animated PowerPoint upload to http://www.slideboom.com/ Once you have created your story in PowerPoint, upload to the class slideshare account, and then get the embed code and embed into your blog or wiki. Mac users resave your ‘Keynote’ as  a ‘PowerPoint’ or as a PDF and then upload to Slideboom.
Kerpoof story Publish your story in kerpoof.comand use the cartoon graphics and print out your story. Kerpoof is a wonderful cartoon site, select Make a Story, choose  a background and then drag graphics onto background. Add text to speech bubbles coming of characters and add text boxes for the narrative text. Print out in colour or as a colouring page. Screen capture to add to blogs and wikis.
Wordle Wordle your story. See if otherstudents can work out what  you weretalking about. http://wordle.net/create Wordle has many uses, great for proof reading, see how many  times you have overused a word, but it is also great for  publishing students work.
Animoto slideshow Save your PowerPoint slides as jpegsand put them into animoto.com As this slideshow moves quickly words should be simple, high  impact less than six words to a page. Great way to publish a commercial, slogan or an advertisement.
Masher slideshow Import your photos, add text captions with music. http://www.masher.com Import photos or your own jpegs created in KidPix or Paint into Masher, select music, skins, captions, and embed into wiki or  blog.
KidPix and Photoshow Export your KidPix pictures  as jpegs and insert intophotoshow.com add your text and music. Import photos or your own jpegs created in KidPix or Paint into PhotoShow, select music, styles, captions, speech bubbles and  embed into wiki or blog.
Toondoo Spaces ComicCreate a 1 to 3 page comic using your writing and cartoon graphics. http://www.toondoospaces.com This site is not free but is 100 percent safe for your students. Cost $8 US a month for 30 users.
Voicethread Publish your story in voicethread.com and invite people to comment on it. Import photos, Word or PowerPoint documents into Voicethread.  Record your voice or type in a text message. Others can  comment by voice or text.
Sketchcast Retell your story in sketchcast.com, drawing the pictures and record your voice telling the story. Record your voice telling the story and at the same time draw  the pictures. Press Stop when you want to take a break and then  start recording again. This show can then be embedded into  wikis or blogs.
Webcam publishing Read your story out aloud recording it on the webcam, show any pictures you may have drawn. Use the webcam on your computer or laptop, or an external  webcam. Students can record themselves reading their stories and  showing the pictures.
Mixbook publish Publish your story on mixbook.com Insert photos to illustrate your text. Import photos or jpegs to mixbook, choose from the huge  selection of templates, drag the photos in, type in the text  boxes. When finished it will present as a book with pages that  turn. Embed into wikis and blogs.
Publish in Issuu Publish your story  in Word or  PowerPoint.  Upload to issuu.com Once you have uploaded your Word or PowerPoint, it will present as a book. Zoom in and out to see pictures more clearly.  View in full screen. Embed into wikis or blogs.
UDL Bookbuilder Publish your story with your own photos or graphics in bookbuilder.cast.org Teachers, publish your younger student’s stories in Bookbuilder.  Click on Create and Edit books. Add photos and text. Save the  Books and then print out. Not able to be embedded into wikis  and blogs. But can be viewed on the website and text can be  read back to student.
Timeline your story Retell your story as a timeline in http://www.dipity.com Import pictures, add text, add Google map, insert Youtube  movies.Embed in blogs and wikis. Can be viewed as a timeline or Flip book.
Publish in Glogster Make an interactive poster of yourstory with text, links and  Photos in  http://edu.glogster.com/ Import pictures, add text, insert movies, hyperlink to othersites.Embed in blogs and wikis.
Mapwing  Insert photos into  mapwing.com and map where the  events happened. Create, draw,or import a map. Mark with pins. For every pin import graphics, or photos with captions. Mapwing is like a slideshow except the viewer can interact by choosing which part of the map they wish to see first.
Makebeliefscomix Publish your story on makebeliefscomix.com Break your story up into speech bubbles & narrative boxes. There are a limited number of characters but you can changetheir expressions and positions. Add the speech bubbles andthe narrative boxes. Print out or take screen captures for inserting into PowerPoint or wikis and blogs.
Publish Your Essay Map Fill out all of the parts of the essay map and thenprint out  http://www.readwritethink.org/materials/essaymap/ This application is useful for drafting stories but makes a nicepresentation tool when printed out.
Dialectise your Text Paste in your writing, chooseyourdialect and clickDialectize button. Copy thedialectised text and paste into a Word/Pages document. Paste in yerwritin', choose yerdialeck an' click Dialeckize button, as enny fool kin plainly see. Copy th' dialeckised text an' paste into a Wo'd/Pagesdocoomnt.  http://rinkworks.com/dialect/ Publish your work as a Redneck, Cockney, Elmer Fudd and  many more. Present both versions or publish the Dialectised  One only and have people translate it! Or just use the  dialectised speech in speech bubbles.
Newspaper your story Paste in your story, click on the Generate button and paste code into your blog or wiki http://www.fodey.com/generators/newspaper/snippet.asp Type in a name for the newspaper, type in the date and the Headline. This would be great for publishing reports and arguments.

  • 1. Publishing Writing Ideas For students Here are some ideas of different ways to publish your work, starting from the simplest to the more complex and time consuming (but fun)! Written by Jacqui Sharp Updated September 2009

  • 5. Whiteboard Photo Using a variety of pens and your best handwriting publish your story onto a Whiteboard. Illustrate it and take a photo. You might need to add lines to guide the children’s writing as they find it hard to write in a straight line. Take a photo and Print out.
  • 6. Blackboard Photo Using a variety of chalk and your best handwriting publish your story onto a Blackboard. Illustrate it and take a photo. You might need to add lines to guide the children’s writing as they find it hard to write in a straight line. Take a photo and Print out.
  • 7. Publishing Paper Choose from the selection ofpublishing paper to hand writeyour final copy. Create your own publishing paper with writing lines, bordersand spaces for student created graphics or fancy headings. Print out WordArt headings or graphics and glue in spaces.
  • 8. Publish in Kidspiration Click the Publish button and finishpublishing your story in Word. When you click on the Publish button, it will open up in Word.   • 10. KidPix Insert a photo or draw a picture that has something to do with your story. Choose a suitable font and type your story. Use the paint can to fill in the background. KidPix is an old favourite for publishing and there are many ways to present stories using the tools available. Use the Paint can for backgrounds, use the background button to set a background picture. Insert Photos or the child can draw a picture.
  • 11. Mimio OR IWB publish Publish your story using IWBsoftware.Use the coloured pen options and graphics to illustrate it. Students love using the Interactive Whiteboard. If it is not being used let a student publish their work on it using the pens to write their story.

  • 16. PowerPoint Recount/Explanation/Procedural Take some photos, create your own graphics or use computer graphics. Type/Paste your story into PowerPoint. Be creative when adding your photos to your slideshow. Some of your photos could be displayed over the whole slide with the text on top. Use maps to set the scene.
  • 17. Photo Story Import your photos, Add text, Add a voice over, Add Music, Save as a Movie. Windows only: Create a movie with photos.
  • 18. iPhoto book Create an iPhoto book. Choose a theme, Insert some photos into the theme. Type in your story. Mac only: Put all the photos you want to use into a folder and then make an iPhoto book.
  • 19. iMovie Import your photos, Add text, Add a voice over, Add Music, Save as a Movie. Mac only: Put all the photos you want to use into a folder and then make an iMovie recording your voice and adding music.
  • 20. MovieMaker Video a story that you have created with toys and the movie set. Import into MovieMaker. Add a voice-over retelling the story. Windows only: Put all the photos you want to use into a folder and then make a Movie recording your voice and adding music.
  • 21. Journal Story Import photos, resize so they fill the page. Type your story in textbox chunks and place on the page. Be creative when adding your photos to your page. Use the Washout feature to fade the photos or Recolour in Word 2007. Fill the whole page with photos, it could be one photo covering the whole page and then 3 small photos layered on top. Or spread three to a page. Type/Paste your text into textboxes over the photos.
  • 22. Podcast Record your voice telling the story. Add some music. Save it as a Podcast. Record yourself reading the story either into an iPod or use the Microphone on the computer. Record in GarageBand (Mac) or Audacity(Win). Add music, jingles and stingers, send as a Podcast to iTunes. Download onto an iPod or listen to iTunes on the computer.
  • 23. Class Writing Blog Add an entry to our class blog by publishing yourStory. Add photos or graphics to illustrate it. Students can type/paste their story directly into a blog page. If inserting photos, make sure they are named with a unique name before uploading (particularly when uploading to wiki pages).

  • 26. Cartoonised Photos Insert photos into befunky.comand cartoonise them. Add them to PowerPoint. Cartoonise your photos in Befunky http://www.befunky.com/index.php Or Fotoflexer http://fotoflexer.com/ Insert them into shapes and make a Cartoon slideshow (see slide 14).
  • 27. Publish Online in Zoho or Google Docs Type your story into Googleor Zoho.Illustrate itand sharewith others. Zoho and Google Docs can be accessed online so students can work on the publishing at home. Also they can be shared with others which allows for peer review. (Terms of Service advise that there is a R13 rating for creating accounts).
  • 28. Slideshare Save your story to Slideshare and publish in ourblog or on our Wiki Page. Slideshare Save your story to Slideshare.net and publish in ourblog or on our Wiki Page. Once you have created your story in PowerPoint or Word, upload To the class slideshare account, and then get the embed code and embed into your blog or wiki. Mac users resave your ‘Pages or Keynote’ as a ‘Word or PowerPoint’ or as a PDF and then upload to Slideshare.

If you have an animated PowerPoint upload to http://www.slideboom.com/ Once you have created your story in PowerPoint, upload to the class slideshare account, and then get the embed code and embed into your blog or wiki. Mac users resave your ‘Keynote’ as a ‘PowerPoint’ or as a PDF and then upload to Slideboom.
  • 30. Kerpoof story Publish your story in kerpoof.comand use the cartoon graphics and print out your story. Kerpoof is a wonderful cartoon site, select Make a Story, choose a background and then drag graphics onto background. Add text to speech bubbles coming of characters and add text boxes for the narrative text. Print out in colour or as a colouring page. Screen capture to add to blogs and wikis.
  • 31. Wordle Wordle your story. See if otherstudents can work out what you weretalking about. http://wordle.net/create Wordle has many uses, great for proof reading, see how many times you have overused a word, but it is also great for publishing students work.
  • 32. Animoto slideshow Save your PowerPoint slides as jpegsand put them into animoto.com As this slideshow moves quickly words should be simple, high impact less than six words to a page. Great way to publish a commercial, slogan or an advertisement.
  • 33. Masher slideshow Import your photos, add text captions with music. http://www.masher.com Import photos or your own jpegs created in KidPix or Paint into Masher, select music, skins, captions, and embed into wiki or blog.
  • 34. KidPix and Photoshow Export your KidPix pictures as jpegs and insert intophotoshow.com add your text and music. Import photos or your own jpegs created in KidPix or Paint into PhotoShow, select music, styles, captions, speech bubbles and embed into wiki or blog.
  • 35. Toondoo Spaces ComicCreate a 1 to 3 page comic using your writing and cartoon graphics. http://www.toondoospaces.com This site is not free but is 100 percent safe for your students. Cost $8 US a month for 30 users.
  • 36. Voicethread Publish your story in voicethread.com and invite people to comment on it. Import photos, Word or PowerPoint documents into Voicethread. Record your voice or type in a text message. Others can comment by voice or text.
  • 37. Sketchcast Retell your story in sketchcast.com, drawing the pictures and record your voice telling the story. Record your voice telling the story and at the same time draw the pictures. Press Stop when you want to take a break and then start recording again. This show can then be embedded into wikis or blogs.
  • 38. Webcam publishing Read your story out aloud recording it on the webcam, show any pictures you may have drawn. Use the webcam on your computer or laptop, or an external webcam. Students can record themselves reading their stories and showing the pictures.
  • 39. Mixbook publish Publish your story on mixbook.com Insert photos to illustrate your text. Import photos or jpegs to mixbook, choose from the huge selection of templates, drag the photos in, type in the text boxes. When finished it will present as a book with pages that turn. Embed into wikis and blogs.
  • 40. Publish in Issuu Publish your story in Word or PowerPoint. Upload to issuu.com Once you have uploaded your Word or PowerPoint, it will present as a book. Zoom in and out to see pictures more clearly. View in full screen. Embed into wikis or blogs.
  • 41. UDL Bookbuilder Publish your story with your own photos or graphics in bookbuilder.cast.org Teachers, publish your younger student’s stories in Bookbuilder. Click on Create and Edit books. Add photos and text. Save the Books and then print out. Not able to be embedded into wikis and blogs. But can be viewed on the website and text can be read back to student.
  • 42. Timeline your story Retell your story as a timeline in http://www.dipity.com Import pictures, add text, add Google map, insert Youtube movies.Embed in blogs and wikis. Can be viewed as a timeline or Flip book.
  • 43. Publish in Glogster Make an interactive poster of yourstory with text, links and Photos in http://edu.glogster.com/ Import pictures, add text, insert movies, hyperlink to othersites.Embed in blogs and wikis.
  • 44. Mapwing Insert photos into mapwing.com and map where the events happened. Create, draw,or import a map. Mark with pins. For every pin import graphics, or photos with captions. Mapwing is like a slideshow except the viewer can interact by choosing which part of the map they wish to see first.
  • 45. Makebeliefscomix Publish your story on makebeliefscomix.com Break your story up into speech bubbles & narrative boxes. There are a limited number of characters but you can changetheir expressions and positions. Add the speech bubbles andthe narrative boxes. Print out or take screen captures for inserting into PowerPoint or wikis and blogs.
  • 46. Publish Your Essay Map Fill out all of the parts of the essay map and thenprint out http://www.readwritethink.org/materials/essaymap/ This application is useful for drafting stories but makes a nicepresentation tool when printed out.

Present both versions or publish the Dialectised One only and have people translate it! Or just use the dialectised speech in speech bubbles.
  • 48. Newspaper your story Paste in your story, click on the Generate button and paste code into your blog or wiki http://www.fodey.com/generators/newspaper/snippet.asp Type in a name for the newspaper, type in the date and the Headline. This would be great for publishing reports and arguments.
