Re: GA DOE 2016 Library Media Program Evaluation
A recent evaluation was performed on the current school library media program at HMS. The
rubric used for this evaluation comes from GLMA & GLA 2015 Judy Serritella Exemplary
Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric. Six categories and twenty two target indicators
were assessed through this evaluation and scored as either basic, proficient, or exemplary. The
chart below displays the results of the evaluation based on the category assessed and number of
target indicators in each category.
An action plan has been developed and will be implemented immediately to move “basic” areas
to a “proficient” level. One “proficient” level indicator has been selected for improvement to an
“exemplary” level and will be included in the action plan as well.

2. Action Plan for Basic Level Indicators
Category 1 – Student Achievement and Instruction
Indicator 3. Professional library media staff are engaged in active teaching role/s.
Current Level – Basic: The Library Media Specialist makes recommendations to students for
class projects and pleasure reading. The Library Media Specialist provides basic orientation and
instruction on information location skills.
Target Level – Proficient: The Library Media Specialist and teachers plan and teach
collaboratively so that the library media program is an extension of classroom instruction.
Action Plan: The Media Specialist will attend teacher planning periods and encourage more
collaborative efforts with interested teachers. The Media Specialist will also suggest print and
non-print material to teachers on a regular basis to promote the media program and the
possibilities of extending the media center into the classroom.
Indicator 4. The library media center resources encourage and support reading, viewing, and
listening.
Current Level – Basic: Bulletin boards and displays of books and reading materials reflect
different aspects of the curriculum, holidays, and community interest to support recreational
reading.
Target Level – Proficient: The library media center offers events and activities that appeal to a
wide range of interests. Attendance statistics verify students’ use.
Action Plan: The media center will begin to offer a variety of events and/or activities that are of
interest to students. Many students have expressed interest in eating lunch in the media center so
that they can read in a silent area. Other students have expressed their interest in creating a book
club where students can come together and have discussions or book talks. These two
events/activities will be the first two things to encourage more participation in the media center
and promote reading, viewing, and listening.
Category 4 – Facilities, Access, and Resources
Indicator 11. School library media center square footage requirements based on FTE.
Current Level – Basic: Based on FTE, the library media center meets minimum square footage
requirements.
Target Level – Proficient: Based on FTE, the library media center exceeds minimum square
footage requirements and is large enough to accommodate large and small group individuals
working simultaneously. Shelving, storage areas, and electric wiring meet the needs of the
collection.
Action Plan: Due to the age of the building and the layout/structure of the media center,
increasing the square footage is not possible. A new school is scheduled to open in 2017. This
3. new building will greatly exceed the square footage of the media center and will accommodate
large and small groups of students.
Indicator 15. One of the national educational technology goals states: “Effective and engaging
software and on-line resources will be an integral part of every school’s curriculum.” The
GALILEO Virtual Library provides Georgia students and teachers access to exceptional on-line
resources at no cost to the local school district.
Current Level – Basic: Students will be given instruction in accessing GALILEO. The password
will be provided in a timely manner.
Target Level – Proficient: Instruction and promotion of GALILEO will be in an organized
manner and conducted on a frequent basis. Students, faculty, and staff will be given instruction
and professional development in the use of GALILEO.
Action Plan: Promotion of GALILEO will be implemented through collaborative plans with core
teachers. In addition to promoting the use of this research database, organized mini-lessons will
be conducted once a month in the media center for all grade levels. Staff development and
instruction for faculty members will be delivered through email and Web 2.0 tools.
Action Plan for SelectedProficient Level Indicator
Category 1 – Student Achievement and Instruction
Indicator 2. Collaborative planning includes both the Library Media Specialists and teachers to
ensure use of library media center resources that support on-going classroom instruction and
implementation of state curriculum and the GPS and CCGPS.
Current Level – Proficient: The Library Media Specialist encourages collaborative planning
among teachers who are teaching units of similar content. The Library Media Specialist is
familiar with the Georgia Standards.org website and the Common Core standards and
encourages teachers to use the resources available on GSO web page.
Target Level – Exemplary: The Library Media Specialist actively plans with and encourages
every teacher to participate in the design of instruction. Learning strategies and activities for all
students are designed with all teachers who are willing to plan collaboratively. All students with
diverse learning styles, abilities, and needs are included in collaborative plans.
Action Plan: Through improved collaboration efforts with classroom teachers, the Media
Specialist will optimize the use of the media center and its resources to improve student learning.
The media center is the ideal place for a variety of learners to complete activities as well as the
perfect situation for learning stations to take place.
