2. Math Standards Materials
• 1.1 Know the concepts of mean,
median, and mode; compute and • Beach ball Globe
compare simple examples to show
that they may differ. • White board with marker
• 1.2 Organize and display single-
• Color pencils
variable data in appropriate graphs
and representations (e.g.,
• Paper
histogram, circle graphs) and
explain which types of graphs are
• Tangrams
appropriate for various data sets.
• 1.3 Use fractions and • Maps
percentages to compare data sets
of different sizes
• 2.1 Use estimation to verify the
reasonableness of calculated
results.
• 1.1 Know the concepts of mean,

compare simple
3. The Activity
• Take your class outside
• All students stand in a circle one at a time catching the ball and
where ever your right pointer finger is touching teacher records
data.
• Land or Water? To make this lesson more advance you could ask
the students where their finger lands, then have each continent and
body of water have their own percentage instead of just water or
land.
• Depending on your time frame tossing the ball either 20 times or as
many as a 100 times
• Take the class back inside and share data
• Then decide which was landed on more water or land. Using
Fractions and percentages. (Fraction Bars)
• Using their tangrams ask the students to pick a continent recreate
the shape.
