Planning and Researching – Moving Image Work
This presentation will discuss the reflection process of the research
and planning work which is involved within my moving image project.
2. 1. What research did you carry out into
similar products?
• Before deciding on how I would approach the research task, I decided upon
the theme of ‘carnival’ and whether I would be producing a music video or
short film.
• Given that initially I decided to make a music video featuring Soca Artist
Kerwin Du Bois’ ‘Soca Child’; I looked at existing music videos which
promoted Soca Music and then researched into the history and culture of
carnival within various West Indian islands.
• I found this process extremely useful as I was able to get a clear
understanding of how, I imagined my own music video to look.
3. Case Studies
• During this task I was able to
make a clear link between the
genre of music and the theme
which was being presented.
How useful were your case
studies?
My case studies were very useful in
terms of getting me to think more
about the narrative and story
behind the song being presented.
• As well as preparing various case
studies which would aid my
progression in producing I also
research in-depth into the theme
for my music video which I found
to be a dominant factor in the
music videos I looked at for my
case studies.
4. 2. How have your skills in researching real media
products improved since the AS course
5. 3. What research have you carried out into
your target audience?
• Due to the audience which I am targeting for my moving image project,
being a minority to other mainstream audiences I found that the best way
to research my audience would be to talk to individuals in the carnival
industry.
• For example: I spoke with a carnival band leader who was able to share
with me how he targets his audience to get them interested in carnival and
the culture of the West Indies etc. I also spoke with a former CEO of
Notting Hill carnival who was able to share his experiences with me and
how he got the public interested in the Carnival scene which also touched
briefly on how to get the public interested in the Soca scene as well.
6. Pitching Ideas and Audience Feedback
• After pitching my Ideas to my peers I felt that they didn’t understand the
wider meaning behind what I was trying to portray/ achieve with my music
video. This could be due to the fact that because Soca music and carnival
are not widely appreciated as an art form or as apart of a culture, the
deeper meanings which I was trying to portray where lost in translation.
However, regardless of this I gained very positive feedback on how much I
knew and understood my chosen genre of music and theme.
7. Change of Idea
• After pitching my Ideas to my peers I decided to re-think my chosen
medium of film from music video to short film and present the ‘story of
Atlantis’ via Carnival and the use of animation. By presenting the story of
Atlantis I feel that I’d be able to connect with a much wider audience as
presenting a story such as this, can be understood by a much wider
audience.
8. 4. How does this initial audience feedback research,
compare to the research you carried out for your music
magazine last year?
9. 5. How well did you organise your actors,
location, costumes and props?
• This part of pre-production
and planning went very well
for me as, given that I was
filming at a public event the
only organisation I had to do in
terms of getting actors
together was to approach a
carnival and get their
permission to allow me to use
their band members and
costumes etc. in my short film.
10. 6. How does this compare to the logistics
planning you did for our music magazine?
• Compared to the logistics
planning I did for my music
magazine, I feel that this year
I have improved dramatically
as I’ve produced documents
which are industry standard
which address all areas of preproduction.
11. 7. How does this planning compare to the sketches, plans
and mock ups you produced for your music magazine?
• Compared to the sketches I
produced for my music magazine
I believe that my skills have
improved as this year the
planning tasks which I had to do
looked, in depth at the material I
would produce for my moving
image project. As last year the
sketches I produced only looked
briefly at the material or content
which would be present within
my Magazine.
12. 8. How does this compare to time
management of the music magazine project?
• Equally I think that my time
management for both projects
are equally the same.
13. 9. How well have you presented your
research and planning?
• I think that compared to last
year the way in which I
present my research and
planning has improved as
compared to last year I have
used a wider range of
technology to present my
findings, case studies etc.
