2. REFERENCE
चरक सिद्धि स्थन ७ अध्याय ६४ श्लोका

3. • आपादतलमूिधस्थान ् दोषान ् पक्वाशये स्स्थतः|
वीयेण बस्स्तरादत्ते खस्थोऽको भूरिािनव ||६४||
(च.सि.७/६४)

4. • आ- as a suffix to verbs ,especially of motion; near, near
to, towards, as far as
• पाद-foot of men and animals
• तल- the part underneath, lower part, base bottom
• पादतल- sole (िु.िू.३५-१२; िु.शा.६-२४)
• मूिध -the head (मा.िन.४४-१०; िु.िू.१८-१८; िु.उ.२५-१७)
• स्थान्- position/posture of body; staying
• दोषान्- fault, defficency
• पक्वाशये-large intestine/ colon (ब्रुहदान्त्र) (िु.िू.२१/६;
िु.धच.३६-२८; च.शा.३-१२)
• स्स्थतः –situated, resting or abiding or remaining in

5. • वीयेण- strength, power, energy
• बस्स्त- मूराशय/ urinary bladder (िु.िू.१४-
२१;च.िू.११-३६)
• आदत्ते-mas. आत्त- to extend, streach-over,
penentrate,spread
• ख-cavity, hollow आकाश
• अस्थो- only
• अको- the sun,ray, flash of light
• भू- the earth
• रिािनव-the best/finest/prime part of anything

6. • Basti dravya due to its prabhava, spreads from
sole of the foot uptill murdha or head
• It not only removes the doshas present in
pakvashaya but throughout the body
• Quoted a simile like sun being stagnent, it
absorbs the moisture from whole of the earth
• Similarly basti being stagnent in pakvashaya
does sarva sharira stitha dosha nirharana/ it
expels the dosha from all over the body.

• बस्तिप्रभथवमथह- आपथदेत्यथदद| पक्वथशये स्तर्ि
इति पक्वथशयगि एव| आदत्ते वीयेणेति शक्त्यथ
तवभथवसम्बद्धयथ| एवम्भूिवीयं बतिथवेव; िेन
पथचनथददप्रयोगथणथां न बस्तिवत्तदहरेव
सकलदेहगिदोषववजेिृत्वां भवति| खतर् इति
आकथशगिः

8. • This sloka signifies about the prabhava of basti
dravya like its spread from pada tala upto murdha
• Pakvashaya sthitha can be taken as pakvashaya
sthita dosha(vata) and pakvashayasthita basti
dravya
• Svabhava sambhadya can be taken as virya of
basti dravya or its wide spread action which is its
inherent quality
• Pachanadi prayoga naam na can taken as basti’s
action exceeds the action of pachanadi dravya as
basti conquers sarva sharirika doshas
• kha astha refers to aakasha which accomodates
sun just like the pakvashaya which accomodates
basti dravya

• सुश्रुि उक्िां- “वीयेण बस्तिरथदत्ते
दोषथनथपथदमतिकथि्| पक्वथशयतर्ोऽम्बरगो
भूमेरको रसथतनव” इति
(सु.चच.अ.३५/२७)

10. • Basti due to its virya spreads from foot to
head (मस्तकम- िु.शा.५-४) / cranium
• seizes all the doshas like sun absorbs water
from earth

सकलथवयवगिदोषहरणां
बतिेरेकतर्थनस्तर्ितयोपमथनेन दशायन्नथह-
वीयेणेत्यथदद| अन्ये त्वत्रथमुां श्लोकां न पठस्न्ि||
२७-२८||

12. • Dalhanacharya mentions, his view about virya
of basti dravya
• Even though basti is residing in eka sthana i.e,
pakvashaya it expels out doshas from all the
body parts
• He also adds that such sloka is not mentioned
elsewhere.

13. • पक्वाशयाद्बस्स्तवीयं खैदेहमनुिपधित |
वृक्षमूले िनषषक्तानामपाां वीयधसमव ्ुमम ् ||२५||

14. • Pakavashaya sthita basti due to its virya spreads
through the strotas, here kha can be co-related
with strotas, visarpati to the quick spread in
various directions in side the body
• Acharya has compared it with simile water
poured to the root spreads to whole plant
• Here moola can be taken as pakvashaya, nishikta
is to irrigate, here we are irrigating pakvashaya
with basti dravya
• Due to the inherent virya of basti dravya it
spreads all over the body like water spreads
through druma/plant

15. डल्हण टिका
पक्वथशयथद्बस्तिवीयं खः स्रोिोभभरनुसपाति
कृ त्तनदेहे; वीयं, शस्क्िः, प्रभथव
इत्यनर्थान्िरम ्||२४-२५||

16. • Pakvashayasthita basti dravya spreads to the
entire body through strotas due to its virya.

17. Acc. to वाग्भिाचायध
यथा कु िुम्भाटदयुतात्तोया्ागां हरेत्पिः|
तथा ्वीकृ ताद्देहाद्बस्स्तिनधहधरते मलान्||८४||
(अ.ह्रू.िू.१९/८४)

18. • As vastra absorbs the colour present in water
which contains kusumbadi dravya in the same
manner dravibhuta mala in sharira is expelled
out of the body through basti karma

19. िवाधङ्गिुन्त्दर व्याख्या
• कु सुम्भकु ङ्कु मथददयुक्िथज्जलथद्यर्थ पटो-वथसो,
रथगां हरेि्-गृह्णीयथि्, न कु सुम्भथददकम ्| िर्व
द्रवीकृ िथि् कथयथद्दोषधथिूनथमेकलोलीभथवेऽवप
बस्तिदोषथस्न्नहारिे, न धथिून्|

20. • Pata/ vastra absorbs only the colour that is
present in kusumba kumkumadi yukta dravya
but not kusumbadi dravya
• In similar sense doshas and dhatus present in
kaya/ shareera become unsteady/agitated due
to the basti virya and only the doshas are
expelled out but not the dhatus

21. आयुवेदरिायन
• शुद्धथशुद्धसम्पके ऽप्यशुद्धमेव
बस्तितिाहारेददत्यथह-यर्थ कु सुम्भथददयुिथददति|
द्रवीकृ िथि्-तनेहथदद द्रथवविथदोषधथिुमलथि्|

22. • Shudda and ashuddha/ pure and impure
factors due to interaction causes the doshas to
become vikruta
• Simile says kusumbadi dravya makes
pure/clean water to become colourful
• Basti due to its virya and prabhava cleanses
out only the vikruta doshas and prakruta
doshas are unharmed
• Simile says pata/cloth absorbs only the colour
from the clean water

23. • Basti dravya comes in contact with shuddha
and ashuddha doshas and expells out only the
ashuddha doshas
• Simile says pata/cloth absorbs only the colour
from the clean water

24. • In diseased state doshas are in linavastha with
dhatus, due to snehana-swedana doshas
might become pakva, and basti due to its virya
will expell pakva doshas out of the body

25. िनगमन/CONCLUSION
• Acharyas have tried to explain the mode of
action of basti dravyas by quoting various
simile
• Vishesha sthana of vata dosha being
pakvashaya
• Basti not only does vata shamana but due to
its virya and prabhava reaches to all the body
parts through minute strotas and expels
vikruta doshas out of the body.
