Great strides have been made within the open source communities towards running big data workloads in containers, but much is left to be done. Apache Hadoop YARN is the modern distributed operating system for big data applications. It has morphed the Hadoop compute layer into a common resource-management platform that can host a wide variety of applications. At its core, YARN has a very powerful scheduler which enforces global cluster level invariants and helps sites manage user and operator expectations of elastic sharing, resource usage limits, SLAs, and more. YARN recently increased its support for Docker containerization and added a YARN service framework supporting long-running services. In this session we will explore the emerging patterns and challenges related to containers and big data workloads, including running applications such as Apache Spark, Apache HBase, and Kubernetes in containers on YARN. "We can all agree that streaming is super cool. And for a while now, the adoption conversation has been largely led with an all-in mentality. But that’s silly. The only concerns end users have are: -The freshness of their data -Latency they require to meet their SLAs from source to consumption -All while maintaining data quality and governance. Luckily, the industry has realized this and we have seen a shift of streaming capabilities surfacing as an in-database technology, via objects as trivial to analytics engineers as views - materialized that is. With this convergence of streaming capabilities and batch level accessibility, this is when ELT tools like dbt can join in and expand out the adoption story. dbt is the T in ELT, Extract Load and Transform. In dbt, analytics engineers design models - SQL (and occasional python) statements that encapsulate business logic. At runtime, dbt will wrap that logic in a DDL statement and send it over to the data platform to execute. In this session, we’ll discuss how we see streaming at dbt Labs. We will dive into how we are extending dbt to support low-latency scenarios and the recent additions we have made to make batch and streaming allies in a DAG rather than archenemies."

The problem is that even the rapidly declining price of flash storage can’t keep pace with the rapidly declining price of hard disk. As a result data that does not need to be on flash storage has to be stored on something less expensive. But does that less expensive storage need to be another hard disk array or could it be stored in the cloud? Data Scientists have many tools at their disposal such as notebooks like Juypter and Apache Zeppelin & IDEs such as RStudio with languages like R, Python, Scala and frameworks like Apache Spark. Given all the choices how do you best collaborate to build your model and then work through the development lifecycle to deploy it from test into production? Why Data Science on Big Data? In this meetup you will cover the attributes of a modern data science platform that empowers data scientists to build models using all the data in their data lake and foster continuous learning and collaboration. We will show a demo of Apache Zeppelin, Apache Spark, Apache Livy and Apache Hadoop with the focus on integration, security and model deployment and management. Data Science at Scale DEMO The demo will cover the Data Science life cycle: develop model in team environment, train the model with all the data on a Hadoop cluster, deploy model into production. The model will be a Spark ML model Practical ML with Apache Spark To deliver machine learning solutions data scientists not only need to fit models but also do familiar tasks data collection & wrangling, labelling, feature extraction and transformation, model tuning and evaluation, etc. Apache Spark provide provides a unified solution for all this under the same framework. For example, one can use Spark SQL to generate training data from different sources and then pass it directly to MLlib for feature engineering and model tuning, instead of using Hive/Pig for the first half and then downloading the data to a single machine to train models in R. The latter is actually very common in practice but painful to maintain. Spark MLlib makes life easier for data scientists and machine learning engineers so that they can focus on building better ML models and applications. We will discuss the underlying principles required to develop practical machine learning and data science pipelines and show some hands-on experience using Apache Spark to solve typical machine learning and data science problem. We will also have a short discussion about how Spark MLlib faces challenges from other machine learning libraries such as TensorFlow and XGBoost.

This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus.
