ABSTRACT. There is an emergent and global trend that integrates bibliometrics and text-mining practices and tools within academic library new services. In this poster, we
present three recent local initiatives, targets and first results, which are order to support the scientific research activities at universities. The cases of three University Libraries in South America are presented, namely, Universidade de São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, and two in Colombia, Universidad Nacional in Medellín and Universidad Santo Tomás in Bucaramanga. According to the data collected through a survey, there is evidence of a growth, after libraries training programs, in the use of databases structured electronic information. This is
especially so in sources indexed in citation databases, such as Scopus and Web of Science and in the volume of records downloaded. There is also evidence of a mutually beneficial engagement of researchers and librarians in the development of technology state of the art and research trends reports. Finally is early to know the extension and impact of these new activities in redefining the role of libraries in the knowledge transfer processes of academic communities.

BIBLIOMETRICS IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES AS AN

BIBLIOMETRICS IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES AS AN
EMERGENT TREND: EXPERIENCES IN SOUTH AMERICA
INTRODUCTION. The large and ongoing increase in volume and in complexity of
knowledge points out challenges and opportunities requiring new attitudes and
organizational techniques. Certain authors remark how science librarians are evolving as
‘science informationists’, pushing them to a closer collaboration with researchers to
enhance their activities by helping them to assess its impact, and manage sources, records
and data (Pollock, 2012). At the same time, some sources are predicting that the traditional
roles of academic libraries will be the next services to be strongly disrupted by the Internet-
based new knowledge access paradigm models (Gibbons, 2013). Among the emergent
trends to evolve and adapt to the new situation are the evolution of the library services mix
(Corrall & Kennan, 2013). The literature (Åström & Hansson, 2013a, 2013b; Gumpenberger;
Wieland & Gorraiz, 2012; Gadd, 2011) and the experience of the authors’ show and confirm
a combination of initiatives oriented to value-added student and researcher support
services including reporting and training services. Also, a more active role has been noted in
the elaboration of bibliometric indicators for academic institutions.
METHODOLOGY USED AND SOME RESULTS
A search in citation indexes (Web of Science and Scopus) was performed using the following
commands: Search string 1 (Web of Science): (TS=(bibliometr* OR scientometr* OR
TechMining OR "Tech Mining")) AND Document type: (Article) AND (TS=(librar*)) AND
Document type: (Article) Indexes =SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, A&HCI, CPCI-S, CPCI-SSH, CCR-
EXPANDED, IC Years=All years; Search string 2 (Scopus): (TITLE-ABS-KEY(bibliometr*) AND
TITLE-ABS-KEY(librar*)) AND DOCTYPE(ar) and a set of records was imported, merged, the
duplicate records deleted and the 665 records were analyzed using VantagePoint software
(Search Technology, 2014).

Bibliometrics and Libraries: A Text Mining Exercise
By providing awareness and fostering abilities about the exploitation of scientific and
innovation information tools and services, university libraries become pivotal in the
development of scientific research at the university level. Actions undertaken by the
mentioned university libraries can be roughly classified as present in the next figure:

The emergence of new demands for the academic libraries point to new trends in
development of their services and products, specially regarding to bibliometric skills
required to support research and scientific activities at the universities. The first results
from the three universities presented here point out evidences of a growth in fostering and
use of scientific and innovation information tools and services oriented to the development
of scientific research at the university level. These three Academic Libraries are undertaking
a number of strategic activities involving bibliometrics and related skills with promising
results in these first years.
Also, there is evidence of a mutually beneficial engagement of researchers and librarians in
the development of technologies state of the art and research trends reports as a
consequence of this evolution of Bibliometrics and Tech Mining as Library Services.
