SELF-KNOWLEDGE I

KNOW MY VALUES
To clarify what you value means to distinguish between what matters most to you and you appreciate, and what
you care less and less appreciate. Knowing what kind of things, activities and facts you give more importance, and
know why you value it is what will most influence your choice.

Please, note on this scale the importance you give to certain values. It almost always happens that if one thing is highly valued,
logically, the opposite is little valued.

                                 (3 = very important, 2 = quite important, 1 = little important).

WHICH IS MY PERSONALITY?
It is quite useful to deepen in this topic in order for you to know in depth and be able to decide, as clearly and
coherently as possible, your professional-academic option.

For this reason, we are going to use the Professional-PersonalTypology defined by professor and psychologist

Most people do not belong to a single type. They are usually a combination of several types.
WHAT ARE MY SKILLS?
When we speak of a person’s aptitudes, we are referring to their qualities and skills. They can inherit them from
their parents and family or acquire them by learning and striving.

Being able to drive, to swim, having an ear for music, being quick in mental calculation, having facility for reading
and writing, being good with hands, ……..are all skills.
Each person has the skills or abilities that characterize and differentiate him/her from others. And, logically, a
painter,a secretary,a teacher.....do not need the same skills.

It is very important to know the skills you have and the skills you lack, before choosing a degree to study or a
profession.

  • 3. SELF-KNOWLEDGE II WHICH IS MY PERSONALITY? It is quite useful to deepen in this topic in order for you to know in depth and be able to decide, as clearly and coherently as possible, your professional-academic option. For this reason, we are going to use the Professional-PersonalTypology defined by professor and psychologist Holland, which divides the personalities into 6 different subtypes. Read through it carefully and think which one you fit in best. 1. REALISTIC TYPE /OCCUPATIONscene Personality Traits: Stable, sincere, frank, robust, practical, confident, materialistic. These are people whoshowinterest inpractical, mechanical, often demanding physical activities, oractivitiesthat involvecontact with nature(preparing crops, takingcare of animals, etc.). They prefer to workwithtools andobjectsinstead of workingwithwords andpeople. They want tobuild thingsand seepractical results oftheir work. Normally, they donot seeksocial contactand avoidbeing noticed.Typical occupationsin this categoryinclude:agriculture, carpentry, mechanics, driving, etc. 2. INTELLECTUAL TYPE /SCIENTIFICscene Personality Traits: Independent, analytical, intellectual, precise, curious, reflective, critical, studious, etc. They like to observe and experience to understand the phenomena that surround them. They enjoy solving problems using ideas and language. They highly value mathematics and scientific work. They often like working alone and enjoy solving difficult and abstract problems. They feel attracted by chemistry, architecture, biology, medicine, and research degrees in general. 3. ARTISTIC TYPE /ART scene Personality Traits: Imaginative, idealistic, intuitive, expressive, artistic, bohemian, in a way willing to withdraw from others or to do things individually. They connect very well to the physical and social environment using their feelings, intuition and imagination, showing interest in creative activities; they love innovation. They often prefer an unconventional lifestyle and value independence. Theyactively seek opportunities for self-expression and tend to be introspective. They do not like the rules or structured patterns. They enjoy contactingpeople. Among the occupations of these people are the writer, designer, musician, actor, etc. 4. SOCIALTYPE / SOCIAL scene Personality Traits: Understanding, cooperation, willingness to help, sociable, diplomatic, tactful and delicate, with a strong sense of ethics and morality. They are people who care about the welfare of others and show willingness to help; generally relating well to all kinds of people, they have good interpersonal communication skills. They are caring, generous and sensitive to the problems of others. Not at all do they like working with tools, objects, machinery, etc. They look for opportunities to express their interest through social welfare occupations, nursing, education, etc.
  • 4. 5. ENTREPRENEURIAL TYPE / BUSINESS MANAGEMENTscene Personality traits: Persuasive, energetic, dominant, ambitious, fashion followers, etc. They face the world showing a bold, dominant, energetic and “aggressive” attitude. They are dynamic, organizing, and confident. They feel attracted by activities that provide them opportunities to lead, persuade and influence their thinking or convince others to buy their products. They like leading, controlling, and supervising people, always in order to get a benefit (economic or for progress) from their job. They value the money, power, and status. They do not like intellectual jobs or those requiring much concentration. Occupations of these people may be: executive managers, public officers, entrepreneurs, vendors, etc. 6. CONVENTIONALTYPE / OFFICE WORK scene Personality Traits: Neat, thorough, perfectionist, effective, systematic, persistent, conformist, very rigid with themselves, or people who strictly fulfill their activities and schedules. They adopt patterns of conduct and standardssanctioned by society. They prefer occupations with clearly defined duties: routines and verbal or numerical activities typical of office jobs. They dislike everything that is not tidy and systematized. Occupational fields most suitable for this type of personality are: accounting, files, etc.. Youhavetochoosewhatkind of personalityyoubelongto. You can choosethreetypes:first of all, theone youthinkthat defines youbest, and thentheothertwothatalsofittoyou, butnot as muchas thefirst: 1. 2. 3. Most people do not belong to a single type. They are usually a combination of several types.
  • 5. WHAT ARE MY SKILLS? When we speak of a person’s aptitudes, we are referring to their qualities and skills. They can inherit them from their parents and family or acquire them by learning and striving. Being able to drive, to swim, having an ear for music, being quick in mental calculation, having facility for reading and writing, being good with hands, ……..are all skills. Each person has the skills or abilities that characterize and differentiate him/her from others. And, logically, a painter,a secretary,a teacher.....do not need the same skills. It is very important to know the skills you have and the skills you lack, before choosing a degree to study or a profession. SOME SKILLS APTITUDES DESCRIPTION Ability to handle, combine and represent colors, drawings, materials, designs. In the field of ARTISTIC music, they have certain ability to play instruments, compose, dance… SCIENTIFIC Ability to observe, experiment and reach conclusions beyond what we understand at a glance. CREATIVITY Ability to invent, do new things, be original. Ability to represent and understand drawings in 2 or 3 dimensions, orient oneself in the space SPATIAL (city,…). Ability to have influence in others’ thoughts and actions, whether speaking or serving as LEADERSHIP example. Ability to perform all kinds of work in which using theirfingers and hands, and requiring MANUAL precisionmovements. MECHANICAL Ability to use tools, understand and repair mechanic items. MEMORY Ability to remember and repeat facts, images, sounds, and data in general. NUMERIC Ability to work with numbers, do numerical mental operations or using other materials. Ability to attend, help others to solve social and personal problems, caring for others, be SOCIAL related… VERBAL Ability to express oneself orally and in writing, understand texts, documents… REASON Ability to understand y discover the logic of facts, problematic situations… One could go on naming skills, but we have chosen these usual ones; however, bear in mind that there are more. There are different ways to reflect on our own abilities: an appropriate way of doing it could be donethrough our school subjects. Marks tend to reflect our preferences, dedication and abilities. (Nevertheless, you know that many other aspects have influence in our marks (interest, effort ...) and not only our ability).
