I gave this talk at MinneBar 2014: http://sessions.minnestar.org/sessions/162 When I joined a SaaS startup already in progress as their first ops hire, what monitoring existed was a twisty maze of half-measures. The devteam dreaded oncall, and our Mean Time To Lost Sleep was way too low. Improving visibility into our infrastructure and application performance required trying new tools and changing how we thought about what we were measuring. Join me for a tragicomic journey from the vale of blissful ignorance through the straits of Nagios and into the mountains of Graphite. We'll talk tools and pitfalls, missteps and dead ends, and everything we haven't yet done but should. Tools covered will include Nagios, StatsD, Graphite, and Sentry, with some digressions into others such as NewRelic and MMS.

My talk from Dockercon EU in Amsterdam, Dec 2014. Original abstract: The ModCloth Platform team has been building a Docker-based continuous delivery pipeline. This presentation discusses that project and how we build containers at ModCloth. The topics include what goes into our containers; how to optimize builds to use the Docker build cache effectively; useful development workflows (including using fig); and the key decision to treat containers as processes instead of mini-vms. This presentation will also discuss (and demo!) the workflow we’ve adopted for building containers and how we’ve integrated container builds with our CI.

Whether it be images or text, the latest methods have now reached a level of quality making it hard to discriminate between human- and AI-generated content. We will review recent examples of such generative models, and put their significance in a broader context, in light of such powerful tools’ potential for dual use. Bio: Pierre is currently researching his PhD in deep reinforcement learning at the Data Science Institute of Imperial College. He also teaches Deep Learning at the Graduate School, and helps to run the Deep Learning Network and organises thematic reading groups. But, compared to other areas such as image recognition, success in Tensorflow for recommender systems has lagged behind. Yaz will provide an overview of the latest research in the field, how it compares to traditional approaches, and discuss the implications for future developments. Bio: Despite working in cloud and machine learning, Yaz believes creativity or power is still not measured in terms of numbers of GPUs or scalable servers. While appreciating what they can do, he remains a steadfast fan of human learning. In fact, he organises the largest number of TensorFlow events in the world. Usually, in a hack format, participants not only share what they have learned, they also draw inspiration from each other, build projects together, and experiment with the process of coding collaboratively itself in order to nurture that sometimes elusive developer flow.

You can expect to hear about novel image labelling techniques, why people are so valuable, and the future of computer vision. Bio: Daniel has just completed his PhD in Computer Science and Biometric Identification from the University of Southampton and is now the co-founder and CEO of Aura Vision Labs, a video AI platform specialising in measuring and improving retail shopping experiences. His research involves robust estimation of pedestrian demographics from CCTV imagery using the latest techniques in computer vision and psychological crowdsourcing. Daniel’s research is published in the leading applied machine learning journal, IEEE TPAMI and Aura Vision was featured on BBC Click in May 2018.

Abstract: Recent developments in understanding technology diffusion and business strategy lend themselves towards analysis as directed graphs. Alastair will briefly introduce a Wardley Map, a directed dependency graph situated in a metric space. I will highlight aspects of this representation that lend themselves to analysis using dynamic graphical models. I will discuss some preliminary thinking about modelling aspects of a business, specifically those that are dependent on machine learning systems. Bio: Alastair is a UCL Computer Science PhD (Computer Vision) with broad experience of applied Machine Learning and Statistical Analysis in a variety of settings. His background includes stints with corporate research, internet startups and universities. He was on the founding team on spin-out Satalia.com (Data Science) and venture backed WeArePopUp.com (Real Estate contracting) and helped setup the IDEALondon innovation centre with UCL and Cisco Systems. His primary objective at Mishcon de Reya is to ensure the firm consistently uses data and machine learning techniques to support and improve its business process, and helps advise its clients on innovation and technology. Alastair continues to maintain an active teaching role in the UCL School of Management (Predictive systems) the Cambridge Judge Business School (Entrepreneurship) and Peking University, Beijing (Technology innovation). Speaker: Yi Wei Title: Write debuggable Tensorflow code and find bugs in the herd Abstract: Tensorflow is powerful but difficult to use. What usually happens is after you wired up the Tensorflow graph, it is difficult to verify its correctness, and when a problem happens, it is difficult to debug. While working on various deep reinforcement learning algorithms at Prowler, I developed a set of techniques to mitigate the pain of writing, understanding and testing Tensorflow code. These techniques enable us to produce machine learning modules in a much faster speed, find bugs with minimal effort and most importantly, deliver learners whose correctness are validated against their definitions, mainly from corresponding research papers. Bio: Yi Wei is a senior machine learning engineer at Prowler. He focuses on deep reinforcement learning algorithms for automated trading. Prior to Prowler, he was a co-founder of the CTX Fintech company which provides algo-trading infrastructure. He also worked at Microsoft Research Cambridge for three years; developed the CodeSnippets technology that synthesizes code from users’ natural language queries and from publicly available code repositories. The Bing search engine productized this technology in the tech search section and reported to have one of its core metrics, session success rate, improved by 4%, a hard to achieve improvement in the world of commercial search engines. He won the Microsoft Research Technology Transfer Award for the CodeSnippets project. Yi Wei got his PhD from ETH Zurich in 2012 on the topic of automated testing and bug fixing.

Speaker: Zbigniew Wojna, Deep Learning Researcher and founder of TensorFlight.Inc Title: Architectures for big scale 2D imagery Abstract: Zbigniew will present research he conducted during his Ph.D. at University College London and in collaboration with Google. His primary interest lays in the development of neural architectures for 2D imagery problems in big scale. He will present the recently published analysis of different upsampling methods in the decoder part of visual architectures, together with last week ongoing extension for GANs. Will discuss attention mechanism for text recognition and review for what kind of application it can be useful (automatically updating Google Maps based on Google Street View imagery). He will explain the idea behind inception and change in Inception-v3 to have it the best single model on ImageNet 2015 and how does it compare to Resnet architecture which was published 2 weeks after. Together with inception, will present his winning submission to MS COCO 2016 detection challenge and the extensive analysis of different models and backbone architectures inside. At the end will shortly review UCL effort working with 4096x4096 images at The Digital Mammography DREAM Challenge for breast cancer recognition, where they achieved 9th among 1375 teams worldwide and 2nd place in the community phase. Bio: Zbigniew Wojna is deep learning researcher and founder of TensorFlight Inc. company providing instant remote commercial property inspection (for risk factors for reinsurance enterprises) based on satellite and street view type imagery. Zbigniew is currently in the final stage of his Ph.D. (already with more than 1000 citations) at the University College London under the supervision of Professor Iasonas Kokkinos and professor John Shawe-Taylor. His primary interest lies in finding and solving research problems around 2D machine vision applications usually in big scale. Zbigniew in his Ph.D. career spent most of the time working across different groups in DeepMind, Google Research, and Facebook Research. It includes DeepMind Health Team, Deep Learning Team for Google Maps in collaboration with Google Brain, Machine Perception with Kevin Murphy, Weak Localization Team with Vittorio Ferrari and Facebook AI Research Lab in Paris. Many different algorithm and models exist to tackle the problem of finding the best product in a huge library of items for every user. In this talk, Oliver explains how some of these models can be implemented in TensorFlow, starting from a collaborative filtering approach and extending that to deep recommender systems.
