Tablet devices are now in half of all
households and 7 in 10
Australians over the age of 16
already own a smartphone.
Mobiles are always on, always
with us and always connected.
Mobile screen time is leading the
way according to new data
released by IAB Australia and
Nielsen which shows that 52
percent of digital screen time is
spent on mobile devices.
There are now 17.5 million
Australians who spent $14.9
billion and more than 285 hours
of their time every year online. 77% of mobile searches are likely
to have a PC available but choose
the convenience of mobile.

SEPARATE URLS?
• On the desktop page, add the link rel=”alternate” tag pointing to the
corresponding mobile URL. This helps Googlebot discover the location of
your site’s mobile pages.
– This tag specifies an alternative URL to the desktop page.

• On the mobile page, add a rel=”canonical” tag pointing to the
corresponding desktop URL. This rel=”canonical” tag on the mobile URL
pointing to the desktop page is required as it signals the relationship
between the two URLs

*maintain a 1-to-1 ratio between the mobile page and the corresponding
desktop page

KEEP RESOURCES CRAWLABLE
• Don’t use robots.txt to block search engines from accessing
critical files on your site that help render the page. If Googlebot
doesn’t have access to a page’s resources, such as CSS, JavaScript, or
images, Google may not detect that it’s built to display and work
well on a mobile browser. In other words, they may not detect that
the page is “mobile-friendly,” and therefore not properly serve it in
mobile search.

UNPLAYABLE VIDEO CONTENT
“This video is not available on
mobile.”
• License-constrained media,
videos that require flash or
players that are not broadly
supported on mobile devices
should be avoided. Unplayable
content is useless to both your
website and your users.

Page Loading time will always be important. Users can
lose interest and become frustrated if they have to wait

  1. Why are mobile sites and this information important?
  2. 1. I did a presentation a while ago on the difference between a responsive website and a mobile site and came to the conclusion that Responsive was the better option, in saying that and I’ll go through a couple of reasons why, as some of you weren’t around when I presented it. 2. Responsive I believe is the easier and cost effective option, it retained current links built to the original website and requires less maintenance. As for mobile sites, yes it might be cheaper to just create a separate mobile site now, but the future costs in maintaining it will add up. In saying that however if you’re happy to monitor 2 website, Google doesn’t discriminate between the two options when it comes to mobile search.
  3. The next couple of tips are collectively for responsive and mobile sites.
  4. It seems like common sense but you would be surprised how many people do it
  5. And you’ll lose a lot of traffic/
  6. Google has provided a tool called page speed insights which allows you to look at all areas that you can fix to better optimise your mobile sites speed, and I have included a link to that in the very last slide.
