2. Ghostface (Scream - 1996)
Name: Ghostface
Ghostface looks the same in every film, but
the identity behind the mask can change.
The motive of the killer also changes, but
is most notably revenge.
- I feel that this monster reflects the social
fears of murderers and plays on the use
of technology, mainly phones in our lives
today.
3. Zombies (28 Days Later – 2002)
Name: N/A
Zombies are monsters that have been affected by
some sort of virus or disease that makes
people into mindless beings that want to eat
unaffected humans or pass on the disease.
- These monsters are scary within society because
they represent the ever relevant fear of illness.
Zombies also represent a fight back in society
against the law. This is relevant in countries,
recently, when there have been rebellions
against the government.
4. Godzilla (Godzilla – 1954)
Name: N/A
Godzilla is a prehistoric monster that was
resurrected by nuclear testing in the ocean. It
seeks to destroy humans and anything in its way.
- I think Godzilla is scary within society because it
reignites fears of nuclear destruction and what
nuclear war can do. Too ad to this the monster
resembles a lizard and dinosaur, which many
people find to be scary.
5. Damien (The Omen – 1976)
Name: Damien
Damien is a boy who is thought to be the anti-
Christ. His presence causes cruel and evil things
to happen.
- This is scary within society for two reasons.
Firstly, Damien is a child, which is found to be
very scary within todays society. Secondly, the
idea of the anti-Christ plays on religious themes
which relates to a lot of people. The idea of a
relation to the devil is a scary idea.
6. Jigsaw (Saw – 2004)
Name: Jigsaw
Jigsaw is a man who is suffering from terminal cancer.
After a failed suicide attempt, he then found a meaning
for his life and captures bad people to put them through
‘games’ in which they have to self inflict pain to escape.
- I feel that this character remains scary within society
because of the reality of abductions in the world. The
games are not beyond what one man could do. I also
think that the iconography of Jigsaw makes him scary,
items such as his tricycle and mask which has a
disturbing design.
